Good morning everyone. Hi Kathy, it looks like we are the newones. My Name is Deanna and I had surgery on Jan 18th 2012. Those first 4 weeks was so hard for me. I had a great supportive husband and son that helped me through. I also have a daughter but she is to young and has special needs to understand what was going on. The ladies in my church was such a big help with meals for the family and helping with our daughter.
I am looking forward to making this journey together with you and the others.

Congratulations Kathy! You will find that when you lose a bunch of weight, it will give you the courage to get yourself moving more and get your leg working better. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations Deanna! That is very stressful to have someone you love in dialysis. Make sure you find ways to comfort yourself (without food). And be good to yourself. You are on your way!

Hello my name is Deanna. I had surgery on Jan 18th 2012. I started eating some food(stage4) about 2 weeks ago. I have lost 57lbs but have a long road ahead of me. Before surgery I was 282lbs and was in good health. What made me decide to go through the surgery was the day a dr told me I could not donate one of my kidneys to save my husbands life cause I was to fat. My husband is in end stage kidney failure and does dialysis at home for 10hrs a day everyday and i just wanted to make life normal for him again. It sure was hard hearing those words "you are to fat to help". So I made a change to my weight and I am still working on it. I am hoping to see that same dr again about being a donor this summer and becoming a donor for either my husband or someone else. I have a new life and I want to share it with someone else.
I am looking for others who have gone through this process and understand all the cravings.

Hoping to make friends,
Deanna

How great is it that you and your husband had the surgery together! You will be great support for each other, eating the same things. It is also great that you are both doing the water aerobics at the Y. I am in the water aerobics for those with arthritis at my Y. It has helped me a lot. I am so sorry about your leg...that has to be tough. I also have neuropathy and nerve damage but I am walking really well since I lost 70+ pounds. I started at 185 and am in the 211-214 range right now and fighting to get to 210 then on down to 200.

You will find lots of support on this team. Go back and read some of the older threads...they have tons of info. Welcome to the team!

Hi Everyone! My name is Kathy and I just had gastric bypass 03/12.2012 and have lost 7 lbs so far. I had a drain and it was removed yesterday. Boy was the drain uncomfortable! I'm glad that thing is gone. I'm at 315 now and my goal is 155 per the doctor. I'm not sure how easy it will be for me because I am limited as to what exercises I can do. I had my left knee replaced in Feb 2008 without any complications and had the right knee replaced in December 2008. The surgeon cut the main artery and end story I lost 60 % of the nerve and muscle tissue in my leg and foot. I have foot drop and neuropathy as a result. My remaining nerves in the leg are permanently damaged and the muscle has atrophied. I have to use a walker as I'm unable to take more than about 15 steps on my own. I also have to wear a brace to hold my foot up. My balance is poor because of this. My neurologist encouraged me to have the surgery and hopes that less weight will help my balance. I was doing water aerobics at the local YMCA for awhile last year with my husband. I had to hold onto him until I got a couple of feet in the water to where I could hold onto the side of the pool. Once I reach waist deep the water will balance me. I'm hoping to return to this after I'm cleared to exercise. I'm also hoping that weight loss will get me off of high blood pressure and cholesterol medications. My husband did gastric bypass on 03/07/2012 to help with his diabetes. His sugar is already down significantly and has lost 20 lbs. My blood pressure was down this past Monday to 124/76 which is the best it has been in a long time. Anyway now that i have wriiten a book i hope to learn what works and what doesn't work from other group members.
