The usual type of iron did not work. I am waiting for the other type to arrive from Swanson Vitamins. I will be checked again in 6 weeks and if my iron is not back up then I will be put on iron injections. Most of the foods that agree with me are foods that block the absorption of iron so I am not too hopeful that this new supplement will work.
but the good thing is that it took 18 months for my iron to get down to the low end of normal and we have been working on getting it back up for 6 months.

Yep, my iron has been known to be a bit low since surgery too. But I have found that if I take 1 Easy Iron capsule per day from Puritan's Pride, it does the trick. I highly recommend it!

Cindy-K - I know so many people who have had low iron. It's good that you are addressing it now, because if it gets worse, it takes awhile to get the levels back up (and taking a lot of iron can "stop you up"). I was also on the low end of normal and I take ferrous fumarate 18 mg once every other day (that's what the dr ordered). And now I am at mid normal range.

I saw my naturopath today and he says my iron levels have not come up so, I had to have a iron injection in my hip. Ouch is that sore! He is also changing the iron supplement to one that is more easily absorbed form of iron. So no more expensive bariatric advantage chewable iron. He will recheck in 6 weeks and if the levels have not come up then I will have to start coming in to get iron injections every month. I am also supposed to call him if I start feeling like I have no energy and he will decide if I need to start iron injections before the 6 weeks are up. I am not anemic but my iron levels are at the low end of normal and have been gradually going down.
I really do have a good medical team and they communicate with each other even though they are different medical groups.
I also found out today that I have an ear infection and a sinus infection so I am now on liquid antibiotics and liquid nasal decongestant. I had to get a prescription for the decongestant as the state only allows one bottle a month and it would only last about 1 1/2 days at an adult dosage.

My surgeon is pleased (saw him yesterday for my 18 month checkin) and says he is glad that I am aware of what the surgery can and cannot do and he thinks that the hypnotherapy will help me. He also agrees that after that I probably should see a counselor to deal with the emotional food issues and stress at work.

I do not see him for a year. He actually scheduled the appointment for March 18, 2013! He plans to contact my naturopath (I see him on Wed) to discuss some things that he wants him to monitor related to my malabsorption and supplements. I am glad my doctors are working so well together.

I do not want to go back to being obese and so I will do what I need to do to address and move beyond my food issues!

Thank you all, for the nice welcome.
Sunny - I know many people who have done the 5-day pouch test and love it. So, I think I will try that soon. I also am a carb junkie. It's so hard to deny yourself but they are very addicting. So I have been slowly decreasing the amount of carbs around.
Cindy-K - They tell us that this surgery is a tool, not meant to take care of all our problems. And it's not brain surgery, so I think we all need some kind of therapy to address our food issues. That's why I like the SP website. It has been very helpful.
Colee82 - Wow, you practically started over again. Isn't that a b***h. I guess it will never be easy and we have to do all the hard work anyway (exercising and eating right). I would like to encourage you to get off as much weight as possible now. Once you start getting older, it's much harder and it can be very discouraging (I just turned 50). And I too am thrilled to meet you all in this team and discuss problems that are unique to us.
Thanks again. Cindy.

Hi Cindy ~
I recently joined the team and I too am in the same position as you. I had my surgery in 2003, so I am 9 years out. I started at 319 and got down to 195 within about 6 mos. I turned 21 a few weeks after my surgery and as the weight melted off, I felt great and began to party, living the good life as the new me. So the weight started coming back on and over the years I eventually made my way back up to I think about 309. From there, I yo-yo'd as I always have, and stopped at 293 for a bit. Last year, with the help of SP, I took off 50 lbs for my wedding, but since last June, have put back on 32 lbs. :( Never thought that I would have to go through all this for the rest of my life. I had hoped that after the surgery, these ups and downs would be over. I have an appt scheduled with my surgeon to discuss a revision procedure on Tuesday but I'm not sure about it. I think at least I would like to discuss my situation with him though, just to see what he thinks. I've been hearing about this pouch test, so I think I'll Google it, and see what it's all about.
Welcome to the team, glad you are here! Thrilled to have people who understand where I'm coming from!

Welcome Cindy! Glad you have joined us. I look forward to the wisdom that you will be able to share with us. I am out 18 months and have just made an appointment with a hypnotherapist and EFT (I think that is Emotional Freedom from Thought) practitioner who works with people with food issues. I am hoping she will be able to help me with the food that is out at work all over the office, candy, chips, crackers, cake, all kinds of unhealthy food! I also am searching for a counselor who deals with food issues.

Cindy

Cindy ... just 10 days ago I did the 5 day pouch test for the first time. I am 3 1/2 yrs out and this past year I had slowly put on 8 lbs. This was an amazing realization for me that 8 lbs could so quickly turn into 18 into 28 and so on. I was so surprised what the 5 day test did for me. Not only did I lose 6ish lbs in 10 days, I've found the restrictions again that the pouch gave me when I first had surgery. I think the first 2 days was a revalation with me ... I didn't realize what a carb junkie I had quickly become.

This has given me renewed enthusiasm and excitement that I had 3 yrs ago.

You've come a long way to take some of that weight back off and you deserve kuddos for taking that step to stop the cycle. CONGRATS!
Blessings :-)
Sunny

I just found this team and am very interested in what others who have had WLS are doing to keep the weight off. I had RNY in April 2002. So I am almost ten years out. I originally went from 275 to 160 the first two years and then I gradually gained weight to 210. For the past 3 years or so I have been able to lose weight again, now 172. SP has helped alot with that. I look forward to seeing how this group can help me and if I can help any one in this group.
Thank you.
Cindy.
