I do what Lisrey with audiobooks. I am totally addicted to J.D. Robb and will only allow myself continue while I am walking outside or doing strength training. Otherwise I try to do my reading at home upstairs in the bedroom - away from the kitchen and food.
Thank you! I've been wondering whether to buy an elliptical v. a treadmill and you've made up my mind. I was surprised to learn from the wellness center person from the local hospital who gave a talk at my library that treadmills are better for your body than exercise bikes, but nobody asked about ellipticals. Does anyone have any good brands/models to recommend?
If you read as much as I do, you can only do so much reading while exercising, but it is a good incentive to get that exercise in. Indeed, reading while sitting still feels like the perfect time to munch. Have plenty of sugar free gum and flavored water or soda pop at hand. Tiny mints like tic tacs might be useful. Of course, the goal is to only eat when you eat and only read when you read. How many of us multi-task all the time? These "onlys" are hard to do! It takes a strong desire to change and practice makes it easier. Stick with it, you can do it!!! Who am I to talk? I find myself chewing my nails when I read! Lily
I have an elliptical trainer at home and I try to do all of my reading on it: newspapers, magazines, and books, few of which are large-print. I think it's a little easier to read on an elliptical trainer (which is also easier on your knees) than on a treadmill. I've read on these machines in gyms although it can be kind of hard to tune out the televisions others are watching! I work out on my trainer at least 30 minutes nearly every day.
At work I only use the elevator if I have a cart of books. I'm in charge of the lower level of my academic library and spend most of my time at the reference desk down there. However, there is no restroom on that level, and I drink LOTS of water, so I have to climb the stairs (and I usually go up two levels to our top floor) every time I have to go to the restroom!
I also try to get outside and walk for 15-30 minutes in the middle of the afternoon at work. It's a great stress reducer and pick-me-up. I am not as good about this as I should be particularly when the weather is not nice or I'm super-busy or short-handed.
My problem is also unconscious snacking, but it's while I'm on the computer at home. One thing that does help that you might try is chewing sugar-free gum when you have the urge to grab a snack. Also drink lots of water; it really does help fill you up!
If you want to incorporate exercise into your plan and have something to do when reading besides snacking, you might try walking. When I first started walking, I got myself some audiobooks. I told myself I could only listen to more of the story if/when I walked. It worked -- I got out there and walked because I wanted to hear more of the book. You could also do this with large print books on a treadmill at a gym.
Now I love walking and I don't need to portion my reading this way, but it definitely got me off to a good start. Good luck!
HI All - Well, I've always been fat. But I've never dieted - really! My self esteem has always been based on intelligence rather than personal appearance. But now I'm over 50 and health issues have cropped up. I'm so stiff! I waddle when I get up! I have to take blood pressure pills now! My goals this year are to incorporate exercise into daily life and to eat fewer sweets and salty things. My addiction is eating junk food while reading. And I read ALOT! Do other librarians have the same issue? How do you change the behavior and not eat while reading? All advice is welcome. Oops, I was supposed to say what I do & where I do it. I'm a Director of a small public library in Minnesota and have had a variety of other library positions over the past 14 years. We can get on the subject of burnout sometime if you haven't already!
