I read that if you don't fast for longer than 36h your metabolism slow down alarm doesn't go off. I do feel a lot more energetic, my skin is amazing and I have not lost any muscle mass in 2 months, but gained 2kg of muscle even though I don't eat meat every up day. I do dedicate my fast days to something close to my heart, like the safety of all the Father's children in Africa, or my aunt's cancer. One of our new members whos name I can't remember wants to lose 13kg before Ramadan. On a different tangent- anybody know why our Celest has been quiet lately? Do you think she is up to something fun and adventurous?
I fast for 24 hours, once a week. This means I don't take in calories - so I still drink plenty of water in that time. Short fasts are actually good for you, it increases insulin resistance and is good for high blood pressure and cholesterol. Since so many religions include dietary restrictions a LOT of scientific research has been done on the effects of various types of fasting, and 24-36 hour fasts does nothing negative to your body (If you are a healthy, active individual, of course) I find Fasting decreases my appetite, and "resets" my body. I feel more energetic and much healthier when I do regular fasts like this.
I have, the longest time I have gone without food is 21 days. And right here, I have to add that I would never do that again. It shot my metabolism to bits. I apparently did not start eating again slowly enough. I had a terrible miscarriage, and I did it to heal. It was a time I needed to get close to my Father- He is always at the same place, but we get futher away, and don't hear. Fasting helped me to really listen and ignore the distractions. It was also a time to detox 31something years of toxins. Afterwards I felt like I had shaved 4 years off my age. So it was never foreign or strange to me. At the moment I am following the alternate day diet, where you eat about 2000cal one day and the next a 'fast' of about 500cal. I don't eat at all, it is easier to just not eat on down days. So I fast every other day. And it works for me.
