This is very sad. You can't make someone do what they don't want to. Short of going with him to the doctor and or calling the doctor and expressing your concens, there is nothing more. If you have spoken to him, given him information, now its on him. Good luck.

I'm beside myself because I have a brother who is very heavy, I'd guess around 500 lbs. He has just been diagnosed with Diabetes & he's on 4 pills /day. I think he's depressed. He check's his blood sugar when he remembers to. He thinks as long as it's below 200 or so he's OK. He's now having issues with falling down, cannot sleep, seems to fall asleep at inopportune times. He's not interested in getting help. I think his Dr. is worthless but I also think he's not telling the Dr. anything. His girlfriend & I don't want to see anything happen to him & he doesn't want to hear about any of this from us. I think he's in denial & he's depressed. Both his girlfriend & I are at our wits end because he doesn't seem interested in helping himself. He claims he is & we don't walk in his shoes so we couldn't understand. My mother was a diabetic & died from complications of her second stroke. You'd think this would wake him up but it doesn't seem to. Can anyone offer any advise how we can deal with him & try to get him to see some light? I'm very afraid for him.

First, I love the logo. You should talk with your doc. Do you have a diabetic coach or nutrionitionish you can talk with? I don't take insulin so far and hope I don't have to. I am scared to death of that.

Diabetes scares me to death! I am a type 2 and have known people who had such serious affects that it is scary. My ex son-in-laws mother didn't take care of hers, diddn't lose weight follow the diet nothing. She died at 66 only after having amputations, severe heart problems etc. I don't want to end up like that and am afraid to become insulin dependant. Cinnamon is great for helping keep blood sugar in check and their are lots of reciepes that are tastey.

Hi everyone. My story is similar to Vicki's and Tom's. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes several years ago. My first doctor tried to help me control it with pills and dieting. I was in denial, being very stubborn and not caring. Needless to say, my diabetes has been out of control all these years. Now, my current doctor has put me on 10 units of insulin. She said that my body isn't responding to just the medicine alone. She's very adamant about me getting my diabetes in control. She's told me stories of other people and how they have fared because of not taking care of their diabetes. I am now scared stiff. I am looking at this as a new journey for myself. I am finally going to take control of what should have been controlled years ago.

My diabetes educator recently told me not to stress over making all of the changes that I need to make overnight. My poor eating habits along with my lack of exercise have caused me to gain weight and for my sugar to skyrocket. Up until last year the medication has kept the BS tolerable. After stopping the Avandia (which is being taken off of the market) I was put on Onglyza along with Glimiperide. The side effects of the Onglyza were too much for me to stand (upper respiratory infections) so I changed doctors and medications. My new dr. put me on Metformin 500mg. 2x per day, then 30 days later added another 500mg in the evening but my fasting BS remained around 200. He's added .6 of the injectable Victoza and my BS is coming down to much better numbers. I attended a Diabetes Education Class at a local hospital and also had a consultation with the Diabetes Educator and am now counting carbs and trying to get started on an exercise program. I've lost 28 pounds total (12 since starting the Victoza) and am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps this lifestyle change will stick - so far so good - oh, and counting the carbs and journaling isn't as bad as I'd thought it'd be. It's actually becoming habit! Go figure!

Hi Cacher,
My story is very similar to yours. I was diagnosed in March, 2011 with an 8.5 A1C.
I also enrolled in Diabetes Education Classes at a local hospital a few miles north of Philadelphia. It was the BEST thing I have ever done for myself.
My Dr. also gave me Metformin and basically said the same thing although he did highly recommend these classes. Tomorrow evening will be the last of my 5 classes and wish they would continue on a regular basis.
The other BEST thing I ever did was joined Sparkpeople.com. This is so helpful to me. My sugar is pretty much regulated thanks soley to sticking to the diet plan along with regular exercise.
My hopefully helpful suggestion to you is to try to stick to the "Diabetes Nutrition Diet" on your Spark page and walk, walk, walk, and walk!!!! The Fitness page only calls for 3 Xs a week but I try to walk 6 - 7 days. It really is very helpful. Try to lose only 10% of your weight and you will see a significant difference in your numbers. Check your sugar as much as you can to see where your pattern begins.
I wish you all the best ! My goal is to get off the meds and control my diabetes thru a healthy way of living. This woke my butt up!

Hi to all. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes on April 26, 2011 with an A1C of 11.5. My Dr put me on Metformin 500 mg 2x a day told me to watch what I ate and check my blood 2x a day. Not nearly enough information for me. Have spent the last few months searching for info. Luckily I found a very helpful Diabetes Education Class that is sponsored by Albertson's pharmacy. I now know how important it is to exercise, monitor my sugars, my weight and my carbs. This is really hard. I have also found out that stress really makes my numbers go up and then I get more stressed because my number are up. It seems to be a vicious circle. I know that I have to make alot of life changes so I am committed to post, post, post. Any words of wisdom, suggestions or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi. I have lived with the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes since 1995. Unfortunatley I have not been very successful with controlling my glucose levels, weight, etc. long term. I did very well for a few years and then have not been able to develop a real determination to live a healthy life. And now I am having health difficulties due to this. Briefly, I am single, just turned 60 years, no longer able to drive, and also deal with bi-polar disorder, type 2. Anyway, this is me today. I am actually posting this time around with SparkPeople, in hopes that your encouragement and my acknowledgment that, yes, I do have diabetes, and yes, I AM going to begin TODAY living a healthier life, day by day, minute by minute.

Hey Tom! I have lived in the state of denial too! I've taken pills for my sugar for about 8 years, have been told to lose weight and exercise - and piddled here and there with it. I've had ups and downs but have finally decided to take control of my problem. I've gotten a new doctor, new meds, a new lifestyle and a brand new attitude!

Making changes in how I eat, react to stressful situations and exercise is one of the hardest things I've ever tried. It's going to be worth it though!

Hello everyone. My name is Tom. I was diagnosed with type 2 about 10 years ago. I denied it, didn't believe them. I didn't think that just because my A1C level was high for two readings in a row that it meant I had diabetes. I controlled my blood sugar, up until three months ago, with exersize. I couldn't lay off the food though. Even though I do most of the grocery shopping now my wife still brings home the goodies and I have no will power to refuse her cooking. Anyway, I've been giving myself shots of insulin for three months now. It works great, but I'm still sruggling to lose weight. Why would anyone eat a candy bar or a DQ blizzard when they know it's poison and it will kill them? I don't have the answer to that. I still can't refuse. Help.

Hi Everyone. My name is Pat. I am newly diagnosed with Type 2 (on June 7) I am really motivated by this new diet and to lose weight. I found out about my Type 2 the hard way. I had a 100% blockage of my LAD, had a cardiac cath and a stent placed. Blood pressure and all other blood work normal. I had a sedentary lifestyle-went to work and sat all day, came home and sat all evening. I am increasing my activity now slowly as per my cardiologist and until I see him again in early July to see what types of exercises I can do to help lose weight. I hadn't seen my primary doctor for years ( I am an RN and tended to medicate myself when ill.) I will be getting reacquainted with him as well as seeing an endocinologist and eye doctor. I found Spark People by googling diets and am loving it. Everyone has been so supportive. Now I just have to figure out how to create a SparkPage. I can't wait to get to know all of you.

Good Evening All,

I am a pastor in southern Indiana (happen to be Lutheran). I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes in 2002 and with Type 2 in 2006. I admit I'm not good at taking my meds or with checking my glucose numbers as I should be, I tend to let everything else take precedence in my life. I'm good at taking time for myself, just need to work on keeping myself healthy and go from there.

My husband usually talks a good talk about helping me to be healthy, but has a hard time himself, so I'm trying to get better at posting online and checking in with others. We'll see how this goes...... emoticon

Hi, I have been on the 8 week diabetes weight loss challenge for almost 6 weeks, but I hadn't seen this group. This site (Sparkpeople) also asked me the questions when I signed up as a diabetic to place me on the diabetic diet. On that diet, I have lost 4 lbs. and my sugars are under much better control. It is the first diet that I have found that works this well for me. I have been a diabetic for about 30 years and have always struggled with keeping my sugar under control. Anyway, hello all! emoticon

Hello all I am Tammy I have been diabetic since November 2010. Still learning a great deal and struggling with the numbers so weeks are better than others. I have changed my eating and still changing it. More about portion control because of the exercise routine I try to keep up major word is trying that gets difficult too. I have asthma with this so working around the heat and humidity, rain and season changes I am not use to yet up here in MO. I lived in FL for 10 years and Louisiana 16 years so most of my 39 year have been in the south. Culture shock really I felt like mayberry had been brought out of the television when I moved up here last year. Now I love it the out doors, freedom of neighbors on top of you and the excitement the kids get when they can play outside without having to worry about all the traffic. They get explore real nature my daughter says. lol So far I have lost from 218 to 179 in the 8 weeks since I have joined sparkpeople. My sugars have dropped from topping 280 to 160 I am hoping to get those down more.

Hello All,

My name is Danielle and I have had type 2 diabetes for about 10 years for I was diagnosed as a teenager. I have taken control of my life at the age of 23 and has lost 12.5 months since being on sparkpeople. My weight loss has improved my sugar control greatly but I still suffer from highs and lows from time to time.

Hello,
I am so lost I don't even know where to start. This is not new to me I have gestational diabetes with my son. I just mostly had some questions. I am seeing the doctors right now, I go in tomorrow for my glucose tolorence test. But my triglycerides are elvevated along with my liver levels and been taking my blood sugars and they are over 200 to 3oo. I have a 13 month old now and I just don't know where to start because he takes so much of my time, how do you figure this all out and deal with it all while life is coming at you? I have looked up what that all means and it all has to do wtih diabetes. What do you think I would like opinions

Thanks,
Tracy

Hi, I'm Elaine and I was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My mom was a lifelong Type 1 diabetic, so I do know some about it, but alot has changed over the years (Thank God!) so I've got alot to learn.

Hi! Today is my first day with Sparks. My 10 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 on March 26. Four days before his 10th birthday. I'm curious if you've always had trouble managing you db or is it something recently? He's doing pretty good but am really trying to get him to eat MEALS instead of grazing. Was it hard for you in your teen years. I'm really worried about that.

Hello. I have type 2 diabetes since 2002. I am 43 year old lady. Just last Sept my A1c was 9.2! So after avoiding it for 8 years the doctor finally decided to put me on Levemir insulin. So after being on the insulin since Oct 20 2010 my A1c in Dec was 8.2! So it went down 10 points! Yeah! I just got my A1c results March 2011 and it went down to 7.9! I thought great. I know it needs to be under 7 but it is on its way down. I would like to lose 50lbs as well. If I can do that then maybe my diabetes will go away or at least get alot better. I am having trouble losing the weight though. I too have problems with portion control and late night snacking especially because I get hungry at night! I am trying though. I walk and ride my bike every night for 1 hour. My blood sugar is doing better but I am not losing any weight! Please help! My first goal is to lose 10lbs before my next A1c test in June! That is 3 months away! Thank you everyone for your support and advice. Good luck to all!

Hi, I am new to SP. diabetes I am not. I have type 1 now for 24 yrs. I just turned 32. My diabetes is not under control at all my last A1c was 12. I just have a lot of weakness I guess. I have a daughter, so meal time is what ever she will eat. She knows a lot about mommy's health, she will ask if I checked my bs or done my insulin. She has even seen my in the hospital with an IV and tubes down my nose. It has not changed the way I take care of my self. I am trying to change everything I just don't know how long I can keep my bs normal or close to normal.

I've been around SP for a few months and was diagnosed with Type 2 in December. I'm meeting with a diabetes educator and she is very helpful. My sugar is being controlled with my diet, exercise, and meds. Hope to be off meds in 6 months if I can lose 10% of my current body weight. Woot!

Hello, I received my Type 2 diagnosis today. I am a foodie but now looking at my pantry I feel like I am in the middle of armed warfare :) I know this feeling will pass but it is overwhelming right now. Portion control and late night snacks have always been my problem, sugar has never been that big a deal for me. My eight year old daughter is getting tested next week and I am praying that it is negative for her.

Hi SRRSMOM

This first thing you need to do is buy a book on diabetes and read it. Learn about how many carbs you can eat. There is a book called How to control diabetes it is in paperback that is where I learned the basics when I learned my husband had it and now me. Don't worry the two things you need to know is watch what you eat, drink lots of water, and excise. That is the only way you get this thing under control.

sadyra, I am also new to sparkpeople. I have had diabetes2 for years now. Never had it under control. Im having problems with my feet this week, so I am trying to do everything I can to keep it under control. I have proved that I can before. I tried the Raw food approach for about a week several months ago and I could really tell a difference. No willpower. I'm taking it a day at a time and this morn my bs is 93. Im thankful for that. So hang in there. You can do it.

Hi, my name is Jim. I've had diabetes for 10 yrs now and so far I've been lucky to keep it under control with diet and watching my intake. I was given meds when I first was diagnosed but because of the side effects I stopped taking them. My plan is to keep it under control permanently so I figured this site will help monitor my intake and let me know where to cut back if necessary.

Hello, I am new to diabetes. I just found out last week. I Have been trying to find info online on how to eat. my scheduled time with the dietition is not for 3 more weeks. Raw food diet, Vegetarian, No Gluten... all are supposed to help. Any ideas on what really works? I cut out pop the day of my diagnosis. I am not on meds yet, but I want to stick around for my kids and work on this.

Hey everyone!!! My name is Anna and I am a newbie to diabetes. I was just diagnosed last Friday. I am still in a bit of denial and shock! My fasting glucose was 135 with an A1C of 7.3. I am very scared. I am 36 and have three beautiful daughters that I need to be around for. The Dr. told me that if I could just lose at least 40 pounds, I could probably kick this! Help!!!

I'm 24 year's old diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes In Sept 2010. My first A1C was 7.2 with a average BS of 170. I joined weight watchers and lost 20 lbs. When I went back Dec 11 2010 my A1C was 6.6 with an average BS of 140. I want to keep seeing it come down. I did leave weight watchers after they switched to their new points plus program. I was gaining weight and when I spoke to the leader she said I must be going over my points. I insisted that I was not but that I had WAY to many points now. I made the decision after putting on 7 lbs in 3 weeks I was going to go it my own between spark and the old WW plan I have lost the 7 lbs again and am now back on track. I have quite a bit of weight to lose but to get my diabetes to a even better place is my goal.

Ohhhhhhkaaaay...... Sound the horns!!! HI EVERYONE!
(Yeah, that was waaay too cheery sounding, wasn't it?) I'm a Type 2 Diabetic who LOVES food but was recently convinced by her husband that she should love her limbs more before they fall off from diabetic complicaitons when we are older. What makes me fall off the wagon and now has me back up in weight?? (Not that I've been under 200+ in three years...) I "closet eat". I "stress eat". What do I REALLY need? SUPPORT!
Thanks in advance! ;)

Sounds like we are nearly at the same starting weight and have the same issues. Hey, chin up. I'll try if you do! :) Take baby steps and don't beat yourself up.

Hi my name is shelly I am 50 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year around September I am taking glyburide and insulin shot in evenings the hardest part for me is finding things I can eat that are safe and taste good I found some 100 calorie packs that are good for that chocolate temptation and I found a book with some good recipes in it I just need some motivation to make them I eat a lot of salad I call it my safe food but that gets boring after a while every time I think about reaching for that piece of cake or candy I have to remind myself that my life is worth more then those treats then I get my mind off of it or eat something safe its a mindset I need to work on harder my life depends on it emoticon
