Same story here. When I was 40, and right after my 4th pregnancy the doctor told me that if I didn't watch my diet and exercise I could move into diabetes by the time I was in my 50's. I had been diabetic during my 2nd and 4th (but not 1st and 3rd) prenancies. I didn't listen. When I hit 50 and wasn't diabetic, I figured he was wrong and I was invincible. I wasn't. It just took a little longer. Take care of it now like you are and you may never have a problem.

Thanks for all the great welcomes and advice. I do test my sugars twice a day for now to get a "trend" for my doctor. I really want to get this weight loss thing right this time - my life depends on it. I'm looking forward to being a part of this group. What a nice welcoming feeling. I am in my early 40's and I do realize that if I don't take care of me now, I will be diabetic in a few years, if not sooner! So now's the time, right! Thanks again and I'm sure we'll all "talk" again soon! Everyone have a great weekend!

Hi JeanMarie emoticon You've joined a great team!

You didn't mention your age, but just wanted to let you know that can be a factor. When I was younger (in my 40s) and pre-diabetic, my doctor told me that I possibly could ward off becoming diabetic if I lost weight and exercised. I didn't listen. As soon as I passed menopause, bingo, I was diabetic. So, start taking care of yourself, learn to eat right, limit carbs, avoid high glycemic carbs, exercise and drink lots of water.

You can do this - we'll help and give all the support we can.

Hi Star50 emoticon

Don't know where you live, but here in Georgia, occasionally local pharmacies have coupons in the paper giving meters away when you purchase a box of test strips. Also, check with your health insurance carrier--often they have one that they recommend and may furnish it free. Ask your pharmacist, they can also lead you in the right direction--ours was the one that told me about our carrier offering free meters!

I have used Accu-chek Active and am now using OneTouch Ultra, which our insurance carrier furnished free. Both meters are really good, but I'm sure there are lots of other good meters, depending on what features you want.

Companies like to give away the meters - they make their money on the test strips and lancets!

Good luck in getting a free one!

Hi JeanMarie,
I know it is scarey, but you don't have to be scared. Watch your carbs, monitor your blood sugars and increase your activity level and you may not ever reach the diabetic stage. We are all here to support you and to help you reach your goals. Welcome to the group!

Hi Webcow, It's really a new way of life, when you become diabetic, as you can see by your sister. Make sure that you test your blood sugars. There's a few new things to add on to your daily plan, but it becomes a habbit after awhile. No need to be alarmed, just keep a watch on the carbs that you eat. Stay away from sugars and white breads. Make sure that you add exercises & lots of water to your busy schedule. You want to stay healthy for yourself and your beautiful children. Good luck! ~Polly~

Hello to everyone - I have been with Spark for a while now and recently was diagnosed as pre-diabetic......My older sister (by a year and a half) is now full-blown diabetic. I'm scared but after reading all the posts, realize I'm not alone. I need to watch what I eat, and get a move on. I've also recently separated from my husband so my mission as "single parent" to two of the best kids ever becomes even more important to me and my overall health. Will keep reading and praying for each and every one of you!!! Peace!

Hi Star50, I use the Accu-check, compact plus. 1-800-858-8072 The meter is free, it's the strips that are costly. Call and they will send you one. There are alot of different meters out now. Good luck! ~Polly~ You will also need lancets to get your blood with a finger jab.

I would like to say how wonderful it is to see the encouragement you all give each other. I've been struggling lately to get myself to keep up. I've been trying to walk everyday for at least 20 min, and am working up to 30-40 min. That part seems to be becoming easier, though i haven't walked in about 3 days ( death in the family), but whats been hard for me- the food! I have begun to eat a few things that are better for me, but then i catch myself really wanting some ice cream or something like that. I can't feel bad for wanting that, i just feel that i need to be stronger in my control, and thats the hard part! Thanks for the encouragement i've read in other posts! And i know that it is up to me and keeping up with the strength i know that is needed.

Goodmorning..I am new to this group. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on July 9 2007 and I have been put on Metformin 500mg twice a day to start with. Thanks to another Team Group Leader in a group called "Living with Diabetes" I was able to get a good start on what to do and not to do. But we can never have enough info so I would like to take part in this team as well..
My name is Hilda, I am 57 years, and i live in WA. I have lost 13 pounds since the 9th of July and I am walking a minimum of 2 miles a day. I am setting monthly goals for weight loss in smaller increments in hopes to be able to fulfill them with out disapointment. emoticon

Hi Honey112,welcome back.
I haven't been around all that long but I did notice something that I was told by the SP people that I believe in.
I was looking at your goals and, Woa Nelly!,You gave yourself a mile to go when it would be wiser and healthier to set smaller obtainable goals.A little bit at a time is what is recomended and it makes since.Hit the first 10 to 20 lbs. hurdle and go from there.
Baby steps on the diet.Make small changes.Maybe 1 less unhealthy thing a week. And add a healthy replacement.
I would start again with the articles at the beggining.Information is a big key to success.I hadn't a clue till I started to read the SP articles and I re-read them even if I can't get SP points again.I need to learn to be able to get this program.
I get half my food from a church food bank and am on a limited budget. My brother helps with expenses which is why I am even able to have a computer.
There are ways and groups to help with daily living.
I have found this one, Thank God.
I did join a gym because they have a heated pool which is the only way I can exercise till I have surgery which is comming soon and I get some weight off.
I know SP will help you if you start from the beggining. I wish you the best in your journey..Cookie

Never give up.Never give in.

I thank God for every morning that He creates for me.

It's hard to stay focused when there are many distractions--especially when there are problems at home and with money but I think to manage your diabetes and be successful with your goals you have to start to put you first. It's not easy to do that--I know, but you have to do it. You have to care about yourself as much as you do about everything else. I don't really know what your food plan calls for but you could try to look at what you eat and track everything. Make a plan for what you are going to eat and then stick to it for the day. I have arthritis, fibromyalgia and a few other nasty things and I know that it is difficult to move your body through the pain but it is not impossible. Just go slow--tell yourself you are only going to do as much as you can tolerate. I do not belong to a gym nor do I plan to do so. I prefer activities that are home based and less structured. I use an exercise program that I pop into my TV and do it there. I know I can stop and rest whenever I feel it is too much. You'll want to build up to more exercise and your body will tell you when to do that. You can do this, but you really have to be good to you and put your needs first--at least as far as your health is concerned.

It really isn't too bad, if I just follow through and eat what I planned on eating. I have found some new veggie things, I add fajita chicken to them and they are great and low carbs. Thank you for the info-ginny

I take my lunches and snacks with me and try to vere from ordering out, when everyone does BUT my fav thing to order is onion rings. I can't find out how many cals are in them but they can't be too bad, can they, as they are mostly a veggie? I am stuck at 180 for 6 days, haven't changed anything, with the exception of onion rings--lol.

When I was first diagnosed, I bought "diabetes for dummies" and a book by the American Diabetes Association. It will give you the basics. Mostly I learned how to eat and what I could eat by testing, testing, testing my blood. Generally, diabetics need to be careful about eating foods that raise the blood glucose levels too much. I count carb grams per meal while not worrying too much about other foods (proteins, etc). It works for me. Other people have found other methods that work. I put a lot of info on my sparkpage about my deating/exercise etc.

How about sugar free jello or sugar free pudding or a o diabetic friendly flavored water to fill you up at night? If it's a more emotional issue then you need to address that minor detail. Good luck to you, keep up the hard work!

I also have been looking for the right diet information, I have not met with a dietician yet but wanted to get started on the right track, any suggestions on books or websites out there?

Hi everyone! New to this group. I just found out I have Type 2, last Monday.
To be honest, I have no idea what to eat, when to eat... and well I'm a little frustrated!

I'm sure you are going to do this too. it isn't easy but what we want in life seems to be that way, at least for me. takes alot of time and willingness on our part to suceed, i really believe you will do this. Good luck,. many times over, Have a Blessed day. Hopeing emoticon

Dear Hopeing,
Yes, meds and medical treatments can play a big part in hair loss, age can also. Something as simple as the hair products you are using can also affect hair loss, get a gentle clarifying shampoo and a thickening shampoo to help combat or retain, professional products would be recommended here as the chemicals are far less than in most off the shelf brands or try certified organic. Check with the doc or pharmacist about the meds, even online you can look up RX info. Are you taking any vitamin supps? Vitamins and minerals that are lacking could also be a contributor.
