Hi, Kim, and welcome. There are so many positive steps you can take to effectively manage Type 2 diabetes and avoid complications. This site and team have tons of information. I also recommend dLife on the internet. They have a weekly "show" you can view online, and their newsletters are chock full of info and support. The American Diabetes Association site is also great.
If your health insurance plan allows it, see if you can get some sessions with a dietician to help you understand food, like you have never looked at it before.
People have different perspectives on this, but I recommend working with an endocrinologist rather than a regular primary care physician for your diabetes. The endocrinologist is a specialist and should be very well versed in all things diabetes. Mine is an absolutely wonderful doctor and person - she has made all the difference in managing this disease.
Good luck on your journey. We're all here for you!
