She is a real sweetheart. She called last night to tell me that her doctor thinks she may have gall bladder trouble. I hope not, but if so I hope they take it out. They took over six years to diagnose me and then it exploded before they could take it out. They had a lot of cleaning to do when they finally operated on me. That was nearly forty=five years ago. The procedure is much simpler now.

See you all later,

I talked with a granddaughter last evening. She has lived with a person who didn't take appropriate care with her diabetes. My granddaughter is also appalled that the fact that my doctor didn't set me up with testing equipment. She wasn't a bit mollified when I told her I had an appointment with the diabetes expert at my clinic. I am beginning to understand your concern after she did some explaining. Anyway, She gave me a lot more information. I now have enough information to be able to ask questions.

Hi LInda,

The nurse-practioner has the authority to order a blood draw. The actual draw is done in the lab downstairs. I don't know if she will order a draw because I am not due for one until October. She may order one because I haven't had one recently. My last one was done in May.

I set up this appointment because so many of you were surprised that my primary care doctor didn't set me up to test every day. I know this woman is an expert and she will tell me what I need to do. If she does order a draw I think I will do alright because I have dropped almost twenty pounds since the last draw. I have also been very careful with what I have eaten. I am confident that what ever she finds she will keep me on the right track.

Does your nurse draw the blood for your lab work where you live? Here (in Canada) we have to go to the actual lab and a tech there draws the blood based on the requisition the doctor gives us.

I went to TOPS this morning and weighed four pounds lighter and broke the magic number. ie: I am now in the two hundreds. I am dancing on air. It was no surprise that I had diabetes, but it was a shock to realize that if I didn't do something about my weight I'd have to go on insulin shots. I am doing something about my weight. I am eating more wisely and exercising more. It is all coming together.

For those who were concerned because my doctor did not immediately start me testing my blood every day, I've made an appointment with the nurse-practioner in that office who handles diabetes patients. I am sure she will tell me what to do next. I will go in to see her fasting so that she can have blood drawn if she feels it necessary.

I am taking steps to get this under control.

Hi Patricia,

I hope you can get to a diabetes nutrition class sooner. In the mean time, the diabetes nutrition tracker is a wonderful tool/guide. And exercise is a huge help. Best wishes to you on this journey.

Most starchy foods are high in carbs, unfortunately.

Sun chokes (also called Jerusalem Artichokes) mimic potatoes nicely, as do celery root and daikon radishes. I like cauliflower mashed too.

Jicama is a nice snack with a little lime juice, and has that starchy consistency and crunch.

I'm guessing you're asking because you're craving carbs? When you first begin to limit your intake, the cravings can be tough, but they'll diminish after a few days.

Hang in there!

I am not hungry, if anything I am too full. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to get within the range of carbs the nutritionist recommended. 30 grams is a lot of carbs. 45 is way too much. I admit that I would love to have a piece of fruit right now, but there is none in the house.

I live 50+ miles from the nearest supermarket so running to the store to pick something up is not going to happen. I am just going to have to muddle through. I do have some canned fruit in the house, but most of it came from our food bank and the fruit is canned in heavy syrup. I have been eating a lot of applesauce since I started this. Applesauce isn't very satisfying for me.

I must say I should do okay at TOPS this week. Things are moving right along. I am sure you've experienced that too.

Are there any starchy foods that are low in carbs?

Love, Judy emoticon

Way to go, Judy!

Small steps so you can build the habits. You can do this!

Make sure you're drinking enough fluids. Try sipping a little boullion between meals if you're hungry. Hot tea is comforting and helps to fill you up too.

I'm trying!!! I just walked from upstairs to the bathroom and then to the kitchen and back up the stairs. That is the second stair trip today. I haven't moved this much for a very long time.

I have been staying between 30 and 45 grams of carbohydrates. That is the amount the nutritionist recommended. Right now though my stomach isn't liking this at all. I hope this will go away soon.

Someone said there was no turning back. I am told there is a way. First we have to lose weight and then concentrate on getting enough exercise and eating right. I have talked with others who've beaten diabetes by doing these things. So I am working on it. I don't want to take insulin shots every day.

I can't wait until payday gets here so that I can get some appropriate groceries in the house. What I currently have just isn't cutting it.

Definitely get that referral! It will help. Don't forget aobut the part that exercise plays too in controlling blood sugar. MOVE, each and every day. That, combined with nutrition and meds -- if you need them -- will get things under control.

Patricia, can you not phone your doctor and request the referral. October is still a couple of months away and if there is a delay in getting an appointment, it could be December or even next year before you get in. Just tell your doctor you need the referral so it can get in the works.

Failing that, check on line for places in your area that might offer free classes. Some are offered though the local hospitals, or even local Health Units. Good luck.

and I would suggest not ELIMINATING any food group from your diet, and as Valerie suggested, the diabetes educator is a TREMENDOUS tool...utilize it...i would think you could call your doctor and she/he could offer the prescription before October...

Hi, Valerie I have seen a nutritionist, but my doctor has not referred me to a Diabetes educator, Diabetes education classes, I know they help tremendously. I will tell my doctor about it. Unfortunately I need to be referred by my Doctor to attend, and don't see her until Late October. Yes I have been reading about the carbs and i'm with you on this belief.

Patricia, first of all, don't beat yourself up over your diagnosis. If weight were the only cause of type 2 diabetes than more than 2/3s of the population would have it. There are more overweight people who DON'T have diabetes than those who do...

So, now that you've let go of any guilt, proceed with your good attitude and ask for help where you need it. Have you seen a diabetes educator or dietician yet? Both will help you understand how your body uses the fuel you put into it.

Me, I'm a strong believer in the fact that diabetes is a carbohydrate intolerance disease, so I don't eat them. I realize it's a pretty drastic approach but I'm choosing to put my health first.

Let us know how we can help!
Valerie

Hi, my name is Patricia i'm 31 yrs old. I was recently diagnosed with Type 2. I was so mortified when my doctor told me, but I know it was my fault for gaining all this weight I should have listened when she told me I was borderline, I should have done everything to prevent it, but I didn't and know there is no going back. I will not let it defeat me! I will do everything in my power to control it, i'm ready to do this, and know with nutrition, exercise, meds, and this group I will succeed. My Doctor told me if I lose weight I will not need to take the Meds. emoticon
