Yes WOWEETOO!! Being in control really and truly feels good! I won't sit here and lie and say it is easy to track all my food and eat according to a timer, but the results are more than worth it.

My husband tucked into some take-out Chinese food last night and I didn't even consider asking for a "tiny bite." My son abandoned half a slice of pizza on his plate and I promptly wrapped it up and popped it into the fridge. I don't sneak a sip of my son's juice before handing it to him or steal a bite of his apple. Mindless tastes and bites of food here and there are finally gone from my list of bad habits. It took some time (and tears!!!) but I think I'm going to be okay living this way from here on out.

The diabetic counselor was completely impressed with my sparkpeople food tracker printouts!!!! She said she had never seen someone come in already so prepared for their first meeting. Because I had been tracking my food AND testing my glucose, she was able to immediately pin point what changes needed to be made with 100% certainty. With her quick changes to my plan, my numbers are consistently coming in under 90 for fasting and pre-meals and under 120 two hours after meals. :D

Looks like I might be able to stay off medication for now!!!

Valerie,

She was just following what her doctor and diabetic counselor told her to do. Her other babies were both 10 pound babies too.

Welcome to the group. It's a great place for questions, support and a sense of community. You are not alone. I delivered a 10pounder and my doc thought I might had gestational, then was officially diagnosed with the third baby. Both my boys are growing like weeds and are healthy. I was diagnosed with type 2 when the baby was a year old.

I have been chugging my water like a good little fish since I have always been told that is important for everyone. What makes it especially important for diabetics?

"She had the baby in November and both are doing just fine. Her baby was 10 pounds 9 ounces. This could have been the reason for the addtional carbs. "

Likely, her baby was so large due to the extra carbs.

Both of my boys were under 7 pounds, 11 ounces despite me being gestational for one and type 1 for one. The goal is for normal weight babies, as heavier ones have more blood sugar related issues.

Test, track, and log everything so that you will have things to show your diabetes counselor. My good friend had gestational diabetes. Even eating what she thought was supposed to be what she should have been eating turned out to be not enough. Her daily testing was good but she still had really high keytones in the morning. She was put on byetta and basically had to eat 45 - 60 grams of carbs every 3 hours.

She had the baby in November and both are doing just fine. Her baby was 10 pounds 9 ounces. This could have been the reason for the addtional carbs.

Remember the trick is to test and track. Log everything.

Congrats on the baby and good luck with the diabetes!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I've only had Type II, but my sister had gestational diabetes. She was told by her doctor and nutritionist to eat complex carbohydrates. She ate a lot of carrots and beans (lol)!. It was easy for her because her concern was for the baby.

You have taken a positive step joining this group. Education is the key. Try some of the internet hospital sites for articles and information about diabetes, as well as articles found through Spark. When reading the articles take care to note who wrote the articles and the person's credentials as well as the source from where the information was derived.

Best wishes to you and your baby!!! Carol

I had gestational diabetes with my first son, who'll be 21 in September. I have to say, pregnancy was the EASIEST time for me to deal with diabetes! You're super-aware that every bite you eat must count towards nurturing your baby, and part of that is by eating foods that keep your blood sugar in the normal range.

Diabetes is a carbohydrate intolerance disease. Like others have already said, cut those carbs but make sure you're getting the proper nutrition you need through lots of veggies and enough protein.

As to testing, you can use an alternative site tester and get your blood samples from your forearm if you prefer. If you're using your fingers (which are more accurate if your blood sugar is low), make sure to only prick the SIDES of your fingers, not the tips where all the nerves are.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Valerie

I asked about a waitlist and they said I would just have to call back daily to ask about cancellations. But asking for some brochures is a great idea!

I got my meter today and figure out how to test. That combined with the meal tracker here, I am definitely feeling a lot more confident! It helps having a guide as to how much I should be eating at each meal, especially since I tend to under-eat and eat the wrong ratios at meals. No more of that!!

I'll go check out some of the articles on here while I wait to do my post-dinner test. Definitely weirded out that I will be pricking my finger so many times a day from here on out...

The are a number of articles here on spark and the diabetes website is another one to use too. I wish you well with your pregnancy and watch your monitor. That is your best friend in checking how your body is handling this.

I suggest you call your diabetic counselor on Monday and ask if they have any hand outs at their office. If she thinks you are anxious, which of course you must be, you might even get a cancellation, ask if they have a wait list and you might get answers earlier it is worth a try. Best wishes to you and your pregnancy Pat in Maine. emoticonemoticonemoticonemoticon

Hi, I had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies, but it cleared up after birth for both. Then 5 years after the youngest child I was diagnosed with type II. Definitely watch your carbs, a friend of mine who is currently gestational with this particular pregnancy was told by her nutritionist to limit carbs to 40g per meal & no more than 20g per snack (2 daily snacks).

Hope this helps, definitely check out some of the SP nutrition articles, there's lots of help there.

I just got the bad news yesterday that I have gestational diabetes. I'm 30 weeks pregnant with my second child and 30 years old. My first appointment with the diabetic counselor is in two weeks, so this morning I logged back into SparkPeople (I had been over at BabyFit) to change my program to diabetes. I started tracking and weighing my food and I am picking up a glucose monitor today from the pharmacy.

Looking at the advice in other posts around here, I figured this will give the dietician a solid printout to use as a guide in creating my plan. Time is not on my side since I won't see the counselor until I am 32 weeks pregnant!!!

If anyone has any advice, suggestions, or wants to point me towards any posts, I am ready and wiling to accept them! I want to do this 100% right for my baby and so that even if I do end up with Type 2 later, I will know that I did my best to prevent it.
