More important is the comparison from the number 6 months ago and 3 months ago
and the new A1-c number.

carbs are okay just not the simple carbs
like white food like sugar, flour and white rice, chips, crackers & bread .
Now i eat triscuits or wheat thins or whole grain bread
I make my own yogurt, granola and soups [taco soup my fave]
because it is easier to make my own than to memorize this list
I watch every label with the knowledge that sugar has so many names
•barley malt
•beet sugar
•brown sugar
•buttered syrup
•cane-juice crystals
•cane sugar
•caramel
•carob syrup
•corn syrup
•corn syrup solids

That's just a small taste of it. There are many, many more so read more

•date sugar
•dextran
•dextrose
•diatase
•diastatic malt
•ethyl maltol
•fructose
•fruit juice
•fruit juice concentrate
•glucose
•glucose solids
•golden sugar
•golden syrup
•grape sugar
•high-fructose corn syrup
•honey
•invert sugar
•lactose
•malt syrup
•maltodextrin
•maltose
•mannitol
•molasses
•raw sugar
•refiner's syrup
•sorbitol
•sorghum syrup
•sucrose
•sugar
•turbinado sugar
•yellow sugar

Doc gave me 3 months to right my A1-c number
In October it must be better than 3 months ago 7.1.
I'll stay on diet and exercise until i must take medicines for diabetes.
My liver dumps glucose into my blood stream when i am sick.
It thinks i need the energy i guess

There IS a difference between complex carbs and simple carbs (sugars) (such as wite sugar, white flour, white rice, white potatoes, etc)

The complex carbs take longer to break down into sugars and therefor do not cause the fast spike in BS that simple carbs do....

Beans are a complex carb and contain fibre which is very healthy -- most people do not get enough fibre.... Whole wheat is a complex carb, But even complex carbs should be eaten in moderation. Check your meal plan and watch your numbers. Diferent foods affect different people in different ways.

I would suggest you get a book that gives the carb, fat, protein and fibre content of foods so you can make informed decisions when planning your meals.....

beans are really great food for sure..if you read on the nutrition labels they are not just high in carbs but they are a good source of protein also..that protein helps keep your carbs that are there under control and your sugars from spiking..it's a most excellent choice for sure
congratulations on the results of all your tests but you can still come here as eating a healthy diet is a good way to avoid diabetes altogether and most diabetics can eat like anyone else when they are being healthy..you gotta weigh and measure everything and watch your portion sizes..so again welcome to the time learn all you can about it because it's good stuff to know for sure

Well my doctor said I was fine! Not DIABETIC or BORDER-LINE!!! My A1C = 5.5 , whatever this means! I guess that's a good number if my Doc says so!!! emoticon
I still want to cut my carb intake down some... I don't eat alot of sweets or junk food but I do eat lots of fruit and I love cold beans of any kind on my salads! So my carb intake can climb very fast in a day! It's sooo frustrating. My doctor said it's ok as long as it's complex carbs and not simple carbs. Yet don't both turn into SUGARS??? I need to read and find out more on this subject! Any input or wisdom from anyone appreciated!!! emoticon

A lot of people do not realize how serious diabetes is because most diabetics don't look sick.

Yes, indeed it is very serious, so you don't want to assume or guess @ anything. Good luck!

Thanks for your concern and input! I will keep your advice in mind! I feel great... lost some weight and now I may not be so sure that I have diabetes! I was in the hospital when I received the news my 'blood sugar was elevated and they gave me an insulin dose! I was there for a week... on a restricted diet, much like the one I am following now and My glucose readings were steadily dropping back to normal. In fact when I left, It WAS NORMAL AGAIN! But I was advised to speak with my Primary Care Physician about the possibility of being border-line or 'pre-diabetic. So I am going to make sure I do! I have been reading up on this disease and it terrifies me... I HAD NO IDEA HOW SERIOUS IT COULD BE! Now I am informed! Thanks again!!! emoticon

The thing you have to remember is many disease states appear before the actual diagnosis of diabetes.

The labs help BUT if you're having symptome (i.e. health issues) then just going by the blood sugar level may be a false sense of security.

The point is regardless of whether you're given the diagnosis (and I hope you're not BUT . . . be prepared!) you have the power to make your health better by making changes in your nutrition, exercise and lifestyle. SO go for it! Learn all you can. If it was me, I'd be testing my sugar so you have an idea of how the foods you eat are affecting you so you can make the changes you need to make.

IF you get the diagnosis, just bear this in mind. All of us on this board have been there. I can only speak for myself when I say, I am 100% (maybe more!) better healthwise than I every was before.

welcome to the team ann
this is the place to get it done keep it done and learn all the little things the doctor never tell you
DRINK THE WATER.... big thing there
weigh and measure your portions and control the carbs read diabetes for dummies..it's a wonderful book
i have been diabetic for years and years i eat and cook for everyone you can also it is good healthy food but it needs to be weighed and measured..you will find if you can get a diabetic nutritionist they will help you decide the calories and carb amounts for the day
MOVE ...HOWEVER YOU CAN DO IT MOVEMENT is the deal i started out in a chair and they even have chair exercises here at sparkpeople me 378 to 105 (yep read that 273 pounds lost) and maintaining now for four years..even if you are not diabetic following the above will hold it off and that all by itself is worth the trial
again welcome

Hello! My name is ANN. I was recently hospitalized for something other than DIABETES. Yet during some lab work, they told me my blood sugar was fairly high! I saw my regular doctor 4 months prior to my being in the hospital and my glucose was fine.
