Welcome Regina. I had gestational diabetes with my third child in 1986. My doctor told me that once I had the bady it would go away, and I would not have to worry about it any more. Now they know better. In 2004, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Doctors now will tell you that it puts you at increased risk for type 2 later in life, and that the child is more likely to have weight problems and be more prone to developing diabetes.

Glad to have you on the team. After many years of having my md treat my diabetes I went to an endocrinologist. She is doing extensive testing on my thyroid in connection with my diabetes. She is also checking to be sure I was diagnosed correctly with type 2.
Pat gave you good advice. Be armed with your questions when you see your doctor. If you have not been to diabetes education recently I would suggest you might want to take the classes. I had a refresher recently and it was great. There is always so much to learn about this disease. Good luck to you. Carol

Well, like DOCHAS79 and yourself, I too started that way. My baby in '84 weighed 11lbs. 2 oz. LOL! My Dr. then said Gestational Diabetes was just that. Gone once you delivered. Much different treatment today, as they know more than they did then.
But Welcome to SPARK People, great site full of caring, friendly, knowledgeable people. And my favorite feature is the Nutrition Tracker..be sure and sign in as a Diabetic.

Read about the issues so you will be able to ask many questions.
There are many articles on Spark and they are always easy to read and understand. Take care. I am 68 years young and with eating right with Spark io am off medication for Type 2. The right food and EXERCISE are the things that got me off the medications. and I am so happy and grateful to Spark friends for the information and support. Pat in Maine.

Glad to have you with us. Great place for help. I started out same way you did. Had it with all three of my kids. But back then they didnt take care of you or explain things to you. So now i'm older I have type 2 and that wasnt found till it had been out of control for years. But again good luck at the Drs. and welcome.

Hello everyone I am new to the group. I have been a diabetic for the past 25 years starting with gestational. Actually probably longer than that b/c my mother didn't know any better. I have been having a lot of problems lately with it. I think b/c I have gained to much weight or b/c I now have a thyroid problem. Hopefully when I go to dr. this month I will get put on the right meds so I can control both problems.
