Dear IOEINC,
Don't deprive yourself of jelly if you still want a pbj sandwich. Smuckers makes a wonderful sugar-free jelly that is only (I'm pretty sure this is right) 10 calories a tablespoon. I haven't tried one of them yet I didn't like, especially the cherry and strawberry ones!

emoticon You've gotten lots of good advice as always from the members of this great team!! I have to agree with the advice from IM Magic about the protein with the carbs. I was not a big peanut butter fan (unless it was a PB&J) but now I find it goes well paired with almost anything (not the jelly now of course). You will find what you like and what works well for you. I pretty much eat the same nighttime snack about 1 1/2 to 2 hours before bed and my FBS is usually in the 80s. If I have something different it is higher so figure that one out.
As for exercising I used to exercise a lot before I had kids...after, not at all unless I was playing with them and that took a lot out of me, being overweight and not fit. Now with the weight loss and getting active, I can't believe how much better I feel, to be able to climb stairs without being out of breath and just being able to move more easily in general feels wonderful. I wish I had started long ago, but like they say hindsight is always 20/20. I now walk 3 miles or more per day and have come to really enjoy it. I started slow, walking laps in my house increasing it timewise each day for about two weeks, then outside on nice days and got a treadmill for not so nice days. Find what you like to do, start out slow and increase it incrementally. There are dance and walking DVDs. Some cable companies offer a free exercise channel. Some people have said that exercising with the Wii is fun. Mix and match so you don't get bored. After a while it becomes a habit. emoticon

But again welcome and let us know how you are doing. emoticon

I get high readings in the morning if I DON'T have an after dinner snack... so about three hours after, I snack.

But just a tip--as a diabetic, you should NEVER eat any carbs without PROTEIN. It may sound counter intuitive when you're craving starches, but something about the addition of proteins and fats slows down the digestive process so you don't get the sudden spike in blood sugar--and helps sustain the 'satisfaction' for a longer period... GOOD when that happens! LOL

Try half a cup of cottage cheese, with or without a few crackers. Or peanut butter and celery. Or an 'open-face' tuna sandwich--maybe toasted. You can come up with some wonderful healthy ideas to sub for that cereal--and stick with it, because those starch and sweet cravings WILL go away, if you get some better nutrition going, and don't keep feeding them.

Voice of experience... LOL

Welcome!

Love The Spice I was diagnosed with prediabetes in my twenties. Like you I was not overweight, had a strong history of diabetes in the family and hated any form or thought of exercise - even walking. Dr. told me to run 5 miles a day in addition to eating carbs that were not processed, no processed foods (like american cheese) and to eat foods low on the glycemic index. I couldn't have walked 5 miles on a bet.
However, I did start to eat properly and walk. It took over 20 years before I had to begin my first oral meds. You can do it too!!

emoticon LOVETHESPICE...I believe we question the answer of our Loved Ones bc we do not want to get the answer we don't want to hear. You are not alone in that.
Diet does not work alone, the answer is diet, exercise and the water. By drinking the water Diabetics assist the kidneys in flushing out the toxins in the body. Thus assisting many Diabetics in keeping Kidney Disease at Bay.

Controlling diabetes or slowing the onset is not an over night accomplishment, as I am sure with your family history you are aware. Diabetics can and do live life as they wish and want. It does take time. So to help you, post often so we know how you are doing and when you need help, encouragement, motivation and support. All of that is with the Team. Don't be a stranger and good luck on your journey.

Welcome Love The Spice! You have taken a giant step by joining Spark. This team is extremely supportive and informative. There have been some good suggestions for how to get your exercise without being bored. Another suggestion for exercise is to take walks with your camera. You can combine something you love with exercise.

I get starch or sweet cravings too. One way to try to beat them is to eat complex carbohydrates - (a food low on the glycemic scale) and eat a protein with the carbohydrate. Deli meats also cause the same cravings for me. Perhaps the cravings are related to what you are eating for dinner.

Best wishes for much success! Post often to let us know how you are doing.

Hi! Unlike you, I didn't listen to my doctor's warnings. About the cereal... I have the same cravings at night. Just try to find a cereal without too many carbs and with a lot of fiber. If the fiber count is 5 grams or over, you can subtract that amount from the amount of carbs. (This from a diabetes dietician.)

Just try to find some kind of exercise that's not too much like exercise. I'm not crazy about exercise either, but I love to dance, so I have some "Just Dance" DVD's I dance to. Wii boxing and bowling are fun, too. Also just plain walking or bike riding. I have a recumbent exercise bike in my bedroom that I ride and watch TV at the same time. It makes the time go much faster and it's not as hard on my knees and back.

Just a few tips from a diabetic who would like to prevent you from becoming one, too! Welcome to the site. It's a great place to become accountable for what you eat and your exercise. Anyone of us will be happy to help you with anything that comes up.

Hi All, This is my first time EVER joining anything online - SparkPeople folks seem very kind, knowlegable and supportive - so here goes! I'm 58 and have never been overweight but was recently diagnosed with prediabetes. This scared me a lot because I have a family history on both sides of Type II diabetes. I made an appointment with an R.D. and have implemented most of her recommendations... but I run into trouble because I HATE to exercise and I crave starchy foods (like dry cereal) after dinner. With your help I hope to come to love exercise or find something I can't get enough of, and limit the nighttime indiscretions to just occasional ones. And to not get discouraged when I behave like a human (fall off the wagon) instead of being Patty Perfect. : ) Since I plan to live to 100 (barring any surprises), I've got to reverse the prediabetes and beome strong and fit to have a full life as long as possible. I love photography, mixed media art, nature, and laughing a lot. And - I have a wonderful husband who supports me - but how come we often don't listen to the ones we love???
