Hi, My name really is Ivy. :)

I came here by invitation of ALP1976 after reading through her blogs and finding that her methodology, thinking, goals, lessons learned, and balance/moderation are exactly what I relate to and need.

I tend to give a lot of detail when I write. So I will opt for directing you to my blog to find out a little more about me and my journey.

Briefly, I am on a journey of eating less refined/processed foods with more butter, cheese, cream, meats, veges, and fruit in my eating. I have limited my added sugar intake and am taking advantage of fruit's sweetness. I have found refined sugar and bread (same thing in my mind) to cause chemical problems and high/lows I want to leave behind. So I follow a no wheat regime to break these cravings and to make it easier to eat healthier. However, I do so with a knowledge of choice not as wheat being a forbidden food. These changes and habits along with "being ready", I have now started enjoying exercising everyday with variety and new craving.

I look forward to getting to know the other people on this team as we discuss our journeys and support each other. Thank you for being here.

Hello Everyone. My name is Stephi and suffice it to say, I have been eating compulsively since I was a small child. As a adult, I have weighed 115 up to 347 pounds and I joined Spark last year after regaining 100 pounds of the 160 I lost in Overeater's Anonymous in 2002/2003. Returning to OA was not an option, but I have found such tremendous support and camaraderie here on Spark. It really has served as my 'recovery program'.

Of late I have endeavored to make peace with 'Trixie', the voice in my head that screams at me to overeat when it's the last thing in the world I want to do. Instead of going toe to toe with her in bloody battles to the death...ones I usually wound up loosing...I have simply decided to peaceably and lovingly rebuff her suggestions. This to me is a form of balance which I have never had before, and although I have only spent a short amount of time using this approach with Trixie...it has relieved me of the psychological stress which always surrounded the fight and given me success in not eating compulsively...for today.

Thanks, TinaJane, for the invite to this team. I see myself fitting in perfectly here :-) I look forward to walking this road with all of you! Cheers, All!

Hi everyone! I'm Tiffany, a 44-year-old wife and mom who's finally getting fit and healthy again. We currently live in balmy Phoenix, AZ (Arizona time zone!--No DST!)
I've lost almost 70 pounds to date, with another 30 or 40 to go. Of course everyone wants to know how I did it, but it's really tough to explain that it has all just been a result of balance and moderation. I have been a member of this team, but inactive until recently, after I joined the "Inside Out Weight Loss (IOWL) team. They cover the free podcasts on www.insideoutweightloss.com/podcasts. These podcasts have been woven into a book by Renee Stephens, "Full-Filled" , which is a six week self education plan that enables you to change from a mind having subconscious thought patterns that cause you to crave food to a subconscious mind that helps you eat in moderation (i.e. to eat only when hungry and only enough to be satisfied).
I've come back to the balance and moderation team as it is a swell complement and has better challenge, interest and motivational topics. But I will continue to view the podcasts. One of the most helpful pieces of advice in the podcasts and book was to change negative thinking such as "I won't (eat or over eat this)" to "I will eat all foods in moderation and I enjoy eating foods that best allow me to lose weight" because the subconscious mind focuses on the "I - eat or over eat this" and ignores negative words such as don't, can't, not, etc. Another piece of advice is to eat less of the foods that make you crave eating more than necessary to be satisfied or which provide only very short term hunger relief or comfort so you later have to eat more, which Renee discusses, although no food is forbidden if eaten in moderation. My name is Gwen and I am addicted to "diets/dieting" I have every diet book, have tried every new diet that comes along, have asked other Spark members "What worked for them?"; etc When I saw the title of this team, it peeked my interest; then I read the summary of why this team was started. It really hit home because I don't won't to spend the rest of my life being addicted to "diets/dieting" I need "balance and moderation" in my life. My goal is to do the best that I can each day to make smart/healthy choices.

I have been a spark member since 2010, lost 10 pounds and gained it back + more... lost 7 pounds when eating no processed foods, then gained that back. I have been a Spark member for a few years now, but only recently became active. I am recovering from BED (Binge Eating Disorder) and fatty liver disease caused by years of yo-yo dieting and my BED. I am taking it one day at a time and am focusing on health promoting behaviours rather than numbers. I have lost over 60lbs since I was at my heaviest but still have a long way to go until I am at a normal weight. Bingeing has destroyed my health and I am trying to reclaim it through balance and moderation. I am glad I found this team.

Hi, everyone!

So, I just started typing up a summary of the things I've struggled with since I found Sparkpeople, about 8 years ago...and it was this long list of complicated and/or tragic events, too many that would rival a Lifetime movie character's list of tragedies.

And, if you want to know, you can ask. I might feel like sharing. Honestly, most of the stuff isn't that uncommon, but most people don't talk about it with people they're not close to - or outside of therapy. (Not that I'd get detailed with that stuff. Too personal. Private.)

But I've seen a lot of sadness and lived through a lot of chaos, particularly for someone who's only 27.

Which is the main reason why I've put on weight, kept it on, and couldn't stick with Sparkpeople when I tried it the first time. I was very early on in learning and re-learning the concepts of Balance and Moderation, and how to apply them to my life.

I used to diet, restrict, or binge, most of the time. I forgot how to tell the difference between hunger and emotional eating. I forgot how to rely on myself and my own opinions, how to trust myself to know what was good for me, because I couldn't tell just what was good for me.

I still struggle, but I know how to find my bearings now. I know how to check for hunger, and how to see if I'm being driven to eat or exercise, or over-exert myself because of emotion. And I know how to tune out other people, no matter who they are, to do what's best for me and my body. I don't always do it. Sometimes I can't. But I know how, and I keep making progress towards more good choices and less bad ones. More self-reliance, less letting other people make my decisions for me. More health, moderation, and balance, less illness, extremism, and chaos. Less depression, regret, anger, and anxiety, more happiness and peace.

I don't know how much I'll be around - my mental health makes my consistency pretty unpredictable - but I hope we can help each other. I wish you all bright futures with many blessings.

Hi, I'm Kris and new to this team. I'm 45 and nearly 46---married to a wonderful guy. We've chosen not to have kids (we met kinda late in life) and to live our lives our way. I've been in the hideous word coming 'diet' mode for years. A couple of years ago, I banned that word. Now I refer to this as my ongoing lifestyle change. I don't always know how to have balance or moderation, with food, life, whatever it is...I struggle.

Hello, everybody! My name is Leanna and I joined this team not only for the awesome Yin-Yang logo, team concept, and One Team Rule (to all of which I say a hearty, "Yes! Yes! Yes!") but because I've also been perusing the message boards here and find the positive energy and thoughtful conversations engaging and exceptionally welcoming and friendly.

Lately I've become very jaded with the push-pull opinions of both health experts and amateurs alike, all proclaiming that their way is the right way - and all with the "science" to back it up. Like many of you, rigid rules of "eat this, not that" do not work for me. For me, consistency is key, but so also is variety, self-compassion, fulfillment of the spirit as well as the body, balance, moderation, and awareness. This team, therefore, seemed right up my alley.

I currently live in a converted barn in North Idaho. I live with a man whose eating habits don't really match mine (think Doritos, meat, and chewy granola bars on a daily basis - him, not me!!), his son half-time, and my favorite boy, ever - Moose the dog.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and participating in the team activities and conversations. In the meantime, I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend!

Seems like an excellent time to recommit to some changes -- what a great undertaking of going back to school. Something I am personally working toward myself. Hi,
I love the Yin/Yang symbol and was drawn to the team due to that. I joined Spark People 5 years ago and lost 30 pounds then drifted away and regained 20 pounds. I am recommitted to living a healthier lifestyle which I want to do with balance and moderation. I would like to lose 110 pounds but even more important I want to be healthy and have energy. I am 57 and just quit my job to go back to school. It is a great time to recommit to learning both at school and in learning how to be a healthy, vibrant and energetic person.

I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Kate, a recently retired school psychologist. I've had lifetime struggles with weight and body image and have tried countless programs/diets. I started SP in 2009. I have lost very little weight (8 pounds) in that time having made a decision to focus on fitness. SP has been a great support in that area. My goal has been to be able to be as lively as I feel on the inside and to be able to carry out the physical tasks of my daily life without problems. I know that all of that would be easier if I weighed about 50 pounds less, so I want to start working on that again, but not in a crazy way. I'm looking forward to being a part of this team.

HI EVERYONE. MY NAME IS ERIN AND SO FAR ON THIS EVER SO LONG JOURNEY, I HAVE LOST ABOUT 90 POUNDS HERE. I LOST MORE ON MY OWN BEFORE I JOINED SPARK BUT IT WASN'T IN THE HEALTHIEST WAY. I WRITE IS ALL CAPS DUE TO A VISION PROBLEM. I HAVE MULTIPLE HEALTH ISSUES SO I'LL ONLY BORE YOU ONCE AND NOT MENTION IT AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN DIABETIC SINCE AGE 3 (NOW 67) HAD POLIO WHEN 9, AND DEVELOPED JUVENILE ARTHRITIS (RHEUMATOID) AT 11. AS AN ADULT I HAVE HAD 7 HEART ATTACKS AND HAD A TRIPLE BYPASS AND MY WORST AFFLICTION IS SOMETHING CALLED ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS WHICH IS A CRUMBLING BONE ISSUE. BUT I DO WELL AT DOING MOST THINGS FOR MYSELF. THAT IS UNTIL A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO WHEN I GOT RUN OVER BY A CAR IN A SUPER MARKET PARKING LOT. (I WAS ON FOOT) SHE KNEW SHE HAD HIT SOMETHING SO PULLED FORWARD AGAIN SO BASICALLY, SHE RAN OVER ME TWICE. SO THE BROKEN NECK, AND HEALING FROM THE OTHER INJURIES (INCLUDING BEING SCALPED BY HER MUFFLER) HAVE REALLY SLOWED ME DOWN. THERE'S A LOT I CAN'T DO BUT THERE'S STILL MUCH THAT I CAN. BUT I AM NOW SO SLOW IN GETTING THINGS DONE THAT I DON'T GET AS MUCH TIME TO BE HERE AS I REALLY NEED. I ONLY TAKE 3 PAIN PILLS AWEEK - 1 ON CLEANING DAY, 1 ON LAUNDRY DAY, AND 1 ON GROCERY SHOPPING DAY. NOT BAD FOR AN OLD BAG WITH HUGE ISSUES! SO I'M GLAD TO BE HERE. I AM MARRIED AND HAVE A DAUGHTER IN ANOTHER STATE THAT I RARELY GET TO SEE (BOO HOO). SO I WILL ADOPT ALL OF YOU!

Oh yeah, I can totally relate to that. I've often operated either at "full speed ahead" or "stopped dead in my tracks" mode and have had to work hard to move to a place that's more in the middle. I still tilt more towards one or the other from time to time, just not as drastically or as often as I had in the past.

This is a great team with some interesting discussions. Hope you find you can get a lot out of it!

Hello! First of all, I'd like to thank MAMA2FOURKIDDOS for starting this group! I think it's exactly what I need. emoticon

My name is Tracey, and I so NEED balance and moderation in my life! Honestly, I understand the concept, but have never been able to sustain either for any length of time. I think that deep down inside I don't quite get it. emoticon Moderation is such a foreign concept to me, yet I know it's something I need to succeed. My husband, my family AND my doctor have been telling me for ages to slow down and take it easy, so I've come to the conclusion that hmm... maybe I do push myself too hard, and PERHAPS they're onto something there! emoticon Also, I was really forced to look at myself and my behavior where this is concerned when I broke both feet last year due to over-exercising. One would think that I'd have learned my lesson the previous year when I came down with shedloads of overtraining symptoms. Eventually I'll get it, and that's why I'm here. I need help with this!

Hi, I'm new to this group. I'm Kathy (aka Kate) and live in Joppa, Maryland. I'm 65 and retired. Like Sue, I find it easier to approach losing weight once past work stress and elder care. Currently I'm exploring nutritional benefits of different foods. I usually compare my treats to some other food that might fill a nutritional shortfall in my eating plan, and that usually results in choosing the more nutritious food. So far that has worked out well for me. I haven't found "room" for alcohol or most sweets. It turns out I would trade a glass of wine for guacamole, but I will work in 2 bites of cheesecake or 6 oz. of ribeye if the craving strikes.

I have accepted that I cannot sustain even the lower part of "Overweight" without significant exercise, but I look forward to my cardio now. I have recently begun strength training in earnest. (Once the blubber falls off, I want some tone to show!)

Aloha team, I'm Renee'. I saw the ying yang on Mickey's page and when I clicked on the team, I recognized the leader's profile pic as a member of one of my own teams... plus, I love the idea of, and putting into action ... balance and moderation. I also like the one rule because I have been on so many different diets just this year and they all have worked! Sometimes I just need a change. Right now I'm doing a juicing fast (reboot with Joe) and I'm on day 5 and it's going great. It's really kicked me back into weight loss mode as I had fallen off all diets and was actually gaining. I had to nip that in the bud quickly and not follow past mistakes...

My highest weight ever was 252 back in November of 2012... this morning I'm 196. :)

I really believe in balance and moderation. I don't think any foods are off limits forever. I can't imagine never having birthday cake, or ice cream, or a fast food burger, or indulging, within reason, in the wonderful foods of Thanksgiving and Christmas, ever again... Balance and moderation is the key that unlocks that possibility to have those things now and then. :) I want to get to that point. Healthy eating, activity, treats, fun. :)

Hi Deb, you are not alone. Don't beT yourself up for the gain weight. 20 in the three month is not that bad. In my past I've gained 16 pounds in just a month. Thank goodness that I've worked out and lost the pounds. I'm glad you are here. This is a great warming team that you can get encouragements and supports. Welcome to the team!!

Mmmm, joined not that long ago. I'm so done with dieting that this team sounds reasonable. My issue is binge eating at the moment, going up 20-lbs in 3 months and the clothes are not fitting I need help. Right now checking out diets don't work makes sense but struggling to apply....but I won't give up :)

I hope to be more active again on Spark, at lease once a day visit my teams.

Hi Christina and Helen and welcome! Like you, Christina, my issues with food and exercise were only made worse when I tried to be more rigid. Being more flexible, reasonable and forgiving has helped a lot. And like Helen said, it isn't always easy, but it's a great thing to strive for.

My name's Tina. I lost more than 90 pounds between March 2010 and March 2012 and have been keeping if off ever since.

I just got Christina's reply to this thread, so I rejoined the team. I believe Balance and Moderation will get you to your goal, but it isn't as easy as it sounds.

Hi. I'm Christina, I'm 49 years old, I am Dutch, living in the Netherlands. Could be that my English is not always perfect but I do my best! :)
I joined this team because I am very fond of the concept of balance. I recently started a team called 'Eat when Hungry, Stop at Enough: be a Normal Eater', hoping to support others like myself who struggle with emotional overeaing and binge eating. I know that for me rigid rules and strict managing of my food makes my issues worse, not better. So I am a strong believer in things like consistency, changing habits, taking small steps. And balance! emoticon
