Yin yang symbol holds a lot of meaning for me personally so thank you emoticon I'm glad that you're here with us! Seems like an excellent time to recommit to some changes -- what a great undertaking of going back to school. Something I am personally working toward myself. It will be interesting going back to school when my oldest starts, too! Anytime you need anything, don't hesitate to let us know!!

Hi,
I love the Yin/Yang symbol and was drawn to the team due to that. I joined Spark People 5 years ago and lost 30 pounds then drifted away and regained 20 pounds. I am recommitted to living a healthier lifestyle which I want to do with balance and moderation. I would like to lose 110 pounds but even more important I want to be healthy and have energy. I am 57 and just quit my job to go back to school. It is a great time to recommit to learning both at school and in learning how to be a healthy, vibrant and energetic person.

I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Kate, a recently retired school psychologist. I've had lifetime struggles with weight and body image and have tried countless programs/diets. I started SP in 2009. I have lost very little weight (8 pounds) in that time having made a decision to focus on fitness. SP has been a great support in that area. My goal has been to be able to be as lively as I feel on the inside and to be able to carry out the physical tasks of my daily life without problems. I know that all of that would be easier if I weighed about 50 pounds less, so I want to start working on that again, but not in a crazy way. I'm looking forward to being a part of this team.

HI EVERYONE. MY NAME IS ERIN AND SO FAR ON THIS EVER SO LONG JOURNEY, I HAVE LOST ABOUT 90 POUNDS HERE. I LOST MORE ON MY OWN BEFORE I JOINED SPARK BUT IT WASN'T IN THE HEALTHIEST WAY. I WRITE IS ALL CAPS DUE TO A VISION PROBLEM. I HAVE MULTIPLE HEALTH ISSUES SO I'LL ONLY BORE YOU ONCE AND NOT MENTION IT AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN DIABETIC SINCE AGE 3 (NOW 67) HAD POLIO WHEN 9, AND DEVELOPED JUVENILE ARTHRITIS (RHEUMATOID) AT 11. AS AN ADULT I HAVE HAD 7 HEART ATTACKS AND HAD A TRIPLE BYPASS AND MY WORST AFFLICTION IS SOMETHING CALLED ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS WHICH IS A CRUMBLING BONE ISSUE. BUT I DO WELL AT DOING MOST THINGS FOR MYSELF. THAT IS UNTIL A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO WHEN I GOT RUN OVER BY A CAR IN A SUPER MARKET PARKING LOT. (I WAS ON FOOT) SHE KNEW SHE HAD HIT SOMETHING SO PULLED FORWARD AGAIN SO BASICALLY, SHE RAN OVER ME TWICE. SO THE BROKEN NECK, AND HEALING FROM THE OTHER INJURIES (INCLUDING BEING SCALPED BY HER MUFFLER) HAVE REALLY SLOWED ME DOWN. THERE'S A LOT I CAN'T DO BUT THERE'S STILL MUCH THAT I CAN. BUT I AM NOW SO SLOW IN GETTING THINGS DONE THAT I DON'T GET AS MUCH TIME TO BE HERE AS I REALLY NEED. I ONLY TAKE 3 PAIN PILLS AWEEK - 1 ON CLEANING DAY, 1 ON LAUNDRY DAY, AND 1 ON GROCERY SHOPPING DAY. NOT BAD FOR AN OLD BAG WITH HUGE ISSUES! SO I'M GLAD TO BE HERE. I AM MARRIED AND HAVE A DAUGHTER IN ANOTHER STATE THAT I RARELY GET TO SEE (BOO HOO). SO I WILL ADOPT ALL OF YOU!

Oh yeah, I can totally relate to that. I've often operated either at "full speed ahead" or "stopped dead in my tracks" mode and have had to work hard to move to a place that's more in the middle. I still tilt more towards one or the other from time to time, just not as drastically or as often as I had in the past.

This is a great team with some interesting discussions. Hope you find you can get a lot out of it!

Hello. My name is Sarah and I have, like most of you, been struggling with balance for many years. With a type A personality, I tend to go all or nothing. I have worked very hard over the last year to change that, particularly in regards to my battle with weight loss and exercize. I am happy to have found a team with a like-minded approach. Thanks.

This really is a wonderful group of people we've got here, all coming from different places, but all with similar goals in mind--of achieving true balance and moderation on our own terms. This team has really filled a void in my efforts to live a healthy and balanced life and I just love the questions and discussions we have here. Welcome to the team, feel free to jump right in and let us know if there's anything we can do to help you.

(I am formerly MAMA2FOURKIDDOS, btw)

As the leader of this team, I created it with very selfish reasons in mind -- to help keep myself grounded in the mindset of balance and moderation but this team has taken on a very special life of its own! Amazing people here and a great collaboration of things. Feel free to jump in and join in the conversations, daily questions and the current ongoing challenge!! Hello! First of all, I'd like to thank MAMA2FOURKIDDOS for starting this group! I think it's exactly what I need. emoticon

My name is Tracey, and I so NEED balance and moderation in my life! Honestly, I understand the concept, but have never been able to sustain either for any length of time. I think that deep down inside I don't quite get it. emoticon Moderation is such a foreign concept to me, yet I know it's something I need to succeed. My husband, my family AND my doctor have been telling me for ages to slow down and take it easy, so I've come to the conclusion that hmm... maybe I do push myself too hard, and PERHAPS they're onto something there! emoticon Also, I was really forced to look at myself and my behavior where this is concerned when I broke both feet last year due to over-exercising. One would think that I'd have learned my lesson the previous year when I came down with shedloads of overtraining symptoms. Eventually I'll get it, and that's why I'm here. I need help with this!

Hi, I'm new to this group. I'm Kathy (aka Kate) and live in Joppa, Maryland. I'm 65 and retired. Like Sue, I find it easier to approach losing weight once past work stress and elder care. Currently I'm exploring nutritional benefits of different foods. I usually compare my treats to some other food that might fill a nutritional shortfall in my eating plan, and that usually results in choosing the more nutritious food. So far that has worked out well for me. I haven't found "room" for alcohol or most sweets. It turns out I would trade a glass of wine for guacamole, but I will work in 2 bites of cheesecake or 6 oz. of ribeye if the craving strikes.

I have accepted that I cannot sustain even the lower part of "Overweight" without significant exercise, but I look forward to my cardio now. I have recently begun strength training in earnest. (Once the blubber falls off, I want some tone to show!)

Aloha team, I'm Renee'. I saw the ying yang on Mickey's page and when I clicked on the team, I recognized the leader's profile pic as a member of one of my own teams... plus, I love the idea of, and putting into action ... balance and moderation. I also like the one rule because I have been on so many different diets just this year and they all have worked! Sometimes I just need a change. Right now I'm doing a juicing fast (reboot with Joe) and I'm on day 5 and it's going great. It's really kicked me back into weight loss mode as I had fallen off all diets and was actually gaining. I had to nip that in the bud quickly and not follow past mistakes...

My highest weight ever was 252 back in November of 2012... this morning I'm 196. :)

I really believe in balance and moderation. I don't think any foods are off limits forever. I can't imagine never having birthday cake, or ice cream, or a fast food burger, or indulging, within reason, in the wonderful foods of Thanksgiving and Christmas, ever again... Balance and moderation is the key that unlocks that possibility to have those things now and then. :) I want to get to that point. Healthy eating, activity, treats, fun. :)

Hi Deb, you are not alone. Don't beT yourself up for the gain weight. 20 in the three month is not that bad. In my past I've gained 16 pounds in just a month. Thank goodness that I've worked out and lost the pounds. I'm glad you are here. This is a great warming team that you can get encouragements and supports. Welcome to the team!!

Mmmm, joined not that long ago. I'm so done with dieting that this team sounds reasonable. My issue is binge eating at the moment, going up 20-lbs in 3 months and the clothes are not fitting I need help. Right now checking out diets don't work makes sense but struggling to apply....but I won't give up :)

I hope to be more active again on Spark, at lease once a day visit my teams.

Hi Christina and Helen and welcome! Like you, Christina, my issues with food and exercise were only made worse when I tried to be more rigid. Being more flexible, reasonable and forgiving has helped a lot. And like Helen said, it isn't always easy, but it's a great thing to strive for.

My name's Tina. I lost more than 90 pounds between March 2010 and March 2012 and have been keeping if off ever since.

I just got Christina's reply to this thread, so I rejoined the team. I believe Balance and Moderation will get you to your goal, but it isn't as easy as it sounds.

Welcome, Christina!

Hi. I'm Christina, I'm 49 years old, I am Dutch, living in the Netherlands. Could be that my English is not always perfect but I do my best! :)
I joined this team because I am very fond of the concept of balance. I recently started a team called 'Eat when Hungry, Stop at Enough: be a Normal Eater', hoping to support others like myself who struggle with emotional overeaing and binge eating. I know that for me rigid rules and strict managing of my food makes my issues worse, not better. So I am a strong believer in things like consistency, changing habits, taking small steps. And balance! emoticon

Hello fellow Sparkles. I've been a member of SP since 2008. I lost 80 pounds and began to struggled when I got to ONEderland for the first time in 30 years. I lost my way and regained 60 pounds before restarting my journey this year. I am now that in the lower 200's again.
In the beginning of my journey, the rewards were so great that the journey was actually easy. Feeling physically better is a fabulous reward. I clearly remember the milestones of those early days. I realized my feet didn't swell and hurt at the end of the day, my knees stopped hurting, I could walk a short distance and not get out of breath and I could finally climb a flight of stairs. Losing weight consistently and loose clothing are rich rewards. Accomplishing those things was so motivating. I wanted more of that!
The journey rewards have gotten fewer and smaller once again. I'm still trying to follow the journey, eating in my calorie range, continuing my fitness efforts, measuring portions and tracking. Staying on course is harder, much harder without those rich rewards. I feel I deserve to BE rewarded for all that hard work. This time I am working harder on my inner journey. I don't settle for good enough. I hold myself accountable. I know what to do and I expect I will do it. If I'm not following the journey on a normal day there is something I need to work on in my inner journey and I am fully accountable to do that work. No guilt.
If I face special challenges like family celebrations, or the unexpected, I hold myself accountable to make the best choice I can. Plan ahead if possible, eat as healthy as I can, order a healthy meal where possible, exercise as consistently as possible. Then I need to be accountable to assess my choices and evaluate my actions. Was I making the best choice possible or using the situation as an excuse? I use that information to learn from the experience but again, No guilt.
Already this month, we have celebrated my birthday, DS's birthday, Mother's Day and our anniversary. I didn't gain weight despite those celebrations.
If the situation is beyond my control, like an illness or injury, I hold myself accountable to avoid making choices that make the situation worse like a self pity binge. Again, Assess and learn but No guilt.
I am working hard to see inner journey insights as rich rewards. I post daily and you will find that I try to see the positive side of the journey and will be supportive when I offer help. The journey is so much better with friends and I hear the view up ahead is terrific.i look forward to getting to know you.

Hi there!! Gee saw this team on one of my spark friends pages and thought "I better check this one out". I struggle with MODERATION! I am one of those all in, usually over my head - or completely out watching from the sidelines. I eat too much, I work out until I hurt myself, I can get caught up on my job, in my garden, watching tv, you name it - it is usually a binge marathon. I even take healthy things to unhealthy extremes!

I have been trying to modify my behavior for years. I have not been successful! So here I am, open ears, open mind, willing to try something new, ready to calm the frenzied beast! Hope to get to know all of you better! Glad you are here with me!!! It is so much better knowing I am not alone!

Hi - I've just joined the team (saw it on Sheryl's page) and it is right up my alley. I've gone through all the frustrations with other's opinions, diet books, you name it and felt I had to keep explaining myself - but I wasn't really getting very far myself. Stuck in a box. So now I let others be themselves for whatever reasons. I just don't go there anymore. I hate giving advice but like they say, when you are ready the teacher will appear and it sure did in my case.

I know I'll enjoy it here.

Hello all, my name is Rita and I live in Cheyenne, Wy. I am 55 and have been retired for about 5 years. I have 2 daughters that live here in Cheyenne and 5 grandchildren. Both of my daughters are single moms now without a lot of input/support from their exes. So I get to spend a lot of time with my grands. 4 of them are staying with me this week for spring break. Living alone my biggest problem is skipping meals. Over the last month I have gotten a lot better about healthy choices, eating on a schedule, incorporating snacks so I dont get too hungry then overeat, and adding in exercise primarily in the form of walking my dog. An exercise partner would be a definite plus. But I did get a Jawbone Up which monitors my sleep quality and quanity and steps walked. It helps keep me motivated. Love this team.

The Kings have definitely done amazing things for the community and for the University of Maine. They do a lot to support kids, which is awesome. The sports complex where the senior league world series is played each year was primarily funded by the Kings, as was the renovation of Eastern Maine Medical Center's children's wing.

I don't do horror stories or movies either. I finished The Gunslinger, but couldn't get into The Drawing of the Three. I'll probably get back to it at some point, but at the moment things are dreary and depressing enough, I want my reading to be an escape from that, not more of the same!

Sue, from what I understand, King has been amazing for the community. I love it when these celebrities can do some good with the cash they make. I have huge amounts of respect for that. King does write a lot of interesting things, not all horror, but he defintiely has some underlying disturbing elements in pretty much all of his books. I remember being small seeing my mom read his books so I guess it is only natural I would read his, too emoticon I hate to say this, but I compare every other author to his work and no one stacks up! He is so amazing with description, character development (I am HUGE with this) and weaving a story. I just finished The Waste Lands last night and I am blown away! Such an amazing writer!

Jes, your commute sounds similar to the one I had. But at least I didn't have to deal with tons of tourist traffic.

I haven't read Stephen King because I can't really read horror stories or watch scary movies. They get to me too much! I really like what I know about him as a person; he and his wife are very generous and have done a lot for Maine. But I'll probably never read his books. I wish I could tolerate scary stuff, because I miss a lot!

We just had a brief snow squall. One minute nothing, then a total whiteout, now the sun is out... all within about half an hour! I drive about 45 minutes each way, I'm still debating which is worse on my commute; summer time tourists or winter time snowy weather! Although the potholes and frost heaves might win right now!

I'm a bad Mainer, I've never read anything by Stephen King until a few months ago. I read the first book in the Dark Tower series but really couldn't get into it. My fiance wanted us to read them together, so I am going to try to push myself to read the rest.

There's a 50 percent chance of snow here. I heard this morning it was going to be worse from about mid-coast up. I guess the only good thing about a March snowstorm is that you know it'll melt fast! Jes, I have relatives in the Bangor area, so I know the city fairly well. It's a nice city! Is your commute to Ellsworth very long? I worked at Bates College in Lewiston for 21 years, and commuted 35 miles each way between Portland and Lewiston. I'm certainly glad to get rid of that commute!

I've passed Stephen King's house when visiting my relatives, but that was a long time ago and he may not be living in the same place anymore. One time, years ago, my mother and I were driving somewhere outside Bangor, and we saw an enormous house that looked like a stereotypical haunted house. It looked very exaggerated, but otherwise looked like a real house. Later my aunt told us that it was the movie set for "Pet Sematary" and it was just a facade over a small ranch-type house!

I live in Bangor (home of Stephen King), but I work in Ellsworth. I love living in a state with such distinct seasons, but winter really could stand to be significantly shorter! We're due for a blizzard tomorrow!

Amber- My best friend lives in Wyoming now! Someday I'll make it out there!

Thank you, Amber! Maine is beautiful! I live a few houses away from the ocean, and would never move away from the water. Maine does have its down sides -- winter, for instance! I'd love to see your part of the country!

Alright people from Maine on this team?!! I am simply FASCINATED with Maine as I am an AVID Stephen King fan (I've been reading him since I was 12) and since a good majority of this novels take place in Maine, naturally I am very curious about that country. It is my goal to go there someday. I am land-locked in Wyoming so it is awesome to see others from around our country here!

By the way, emoticon to you Sue! It is great to have you here!

Hi, everyone! I just joined, and am really looking forward to being part of this team. "Balance and moderation" are goals I'm aiming always toward, because by nature I'm not a moderate person! I'm making progress, and the group support will be wonderful.

I'm Sue; I'm an avid gardener and live in Maine. I just retired a couple of months ago after working for the past 45 years. I'm enjoying retirement SO much! It's actually easier to move toward balance and moderation now that I'm not juggling work, family stuff (aging parents), and everything else.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Evening Everyone, I'm Alexa, 41, and I live in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta Canada. I've been with Sparkpeople about 7yrs of varying consistency.
The team introduction made me laugh. I learned the word diet (because of farming) as a noun. There have been so many confusing conversations when I talk about my Diet (the foods I consume) and end up with a response of " I've never heard of that one, how does it work..."
I love the motivation for this team and look forward to chatting with all of you.

This time I won't quit, because I can't quit my life and this journey is my life. It will take me everywhere I want to go.

You may not choose your life experiences, but you choose how you experience life.

We all have it within us to change, if we CHOOSE to do so.

Hi I'm Kelly, 50 and struggling with typical menopausal issues. I have known Amber for a few years now having been on the Natural Healing team when she was leader.

I've battled with weight...either too much or too little of it...since high school, having achieved "just right" 12 years ago. I managed to keep it that way for a decade but the last 2 years have put 8 lbs on me of pure fat so I'm working to get it off.

I'm doing so by eating whole foods, lots of greens and freggies, eating heart healthy fats and avoiding the rest, cutting back on sugar and generally eating healthier. I'm avoiding processed foods as much as possible and trying to go gluten free. I have a sick gut.

I exercise, for the most part, regularly though not as much as I used to so I'm working on that too.

I'm just your run of the mill semi boring person trying to get and stay healthy and fit. I like to sing, garden, make herbal medicines and beauty products, read and spend time with my hubby and dog.

So nice to meet all of you!

Kelly

Hi I'm Sharon, and saw the link to this team on your most recent blog. In reading it i realized that we share a similar mindset about this weight loss journey, and so I have decided to join.

I have quite a bit of weight to lose, and have been trying for the past four years - only to lose it, gain some back, lose it, gain more back . . .you get the picture.
I am currently not working, and am married to a great guy. He is retired Navy, and we have one son who is active duty Air Force, and he will deploy again soon, and we have one precious little granddaughter.

I am looking forward to getting to know you all, and finding the balance in all of this to get to the point of maintenance.

Hi everyone! My name's Tina and I also learned about this new team on the SP Team for Team Leaders forum. As one of the leaders on the At Goal & Maintaining + Transition to Maintenance team, I've seen that people can successfully lose and maintain their losses using a variety of different approaches. My personal journey has been one that's been filled with lots of ups and downs and very big struggles to get my wildly divergent habits under control, which is why I'm such a proponent of learning to come to a place of balance and moderation and why I decided to join this team.

I've struggled with my weight my whole life at weighed in at about 260 at my highest point. It's only been in the past few years that I've been able to stabilize after years of wild ups and downs. A big part of that has been constantly working towards greater moderation and away from my old binge/restrict cycle. I don't sugar coat my journey--it has been very hard at times--but I think it's worth the effort to finally get to a place of greater happiness, comfort and acceptance. And even though I just passed my two-year maintenance anniversary, I'm still constantly learning new things from other people here and about myself that continue to guide my ongoing journey.

I look forward to learning even more from all of you and hope that I can make a positive contribution here.

My name's Tina. I lost more than 90 pounds between March 2010 and March 2012 and have been keeping if off ever since.

Hi folks!
I'm Jes, I'm 32, live in Maine (where we're about to get another foot of snow dumped on us), and I'm working on getting in shape and losing the weight that I put on after meeting my fiance and getting spoiled by the fact that he likes to cook really delicious comfort food. I gained about 40 pounds over the last 2 years and it certainly isn't muscle! I want to lose the fat, get into better shape, and be lean, toned, and strong when my fiance returns home from his deployment in Afghanistan this summer.

I go by Dee.
I saw you started this team in the SP Team for Team Leaders forum.
I'm also part of the At Goal & Maintaining + Transitioning into Mainenance Team.
I'm 5'2", 30-something emoticon and live with a man who can eat like there's no tomorrow and still weighs what he did in high school! I've learned not to eat like he does (the hard way).
I'm sure I'll open up as I get acquainted with everyone.

Dee, from sunny Southern California [Pacific Time Zone]

I am glad that you're here. Stress takes such a big role in our lives and can come in many forms. I understand completely what you're saying. You seem to have an idea of your goals and they seem very reasonable and realistic! I am gladd that you're here!

I'm a 57 year old woman that has a total of 60 lbs to lose to reach a decent weight where I can possibly get off of blood pressure pills and also not hurt so much from RA of the spine. I've been told by my doctor that the less extra weight I'm carrying the less stress there will be on my joints. I don't expect to lose it fast. It took me 8 years to put on all the weight.
I'm trying different things to see what will work best for me in the long run.
