You have come to the right place! We are an encouraging, caring bunch of members. I hope you find yourself at home here. emoticon The best place to meet some motivated group is on the ROLL CALL thread. That has become our support group. Also we just started a new thread called December restart. It's not to late to join. Choose one or more goals for this month and come back daily to give your update on how your doing. It's helps to be accountable. Remember slow and steady wins the race emoticon emoticon . Setting yourself with small winnable goals over short periods should help. However don't make those goals to difficult. We need those successes to keep us going. I hope you are following your food tracker. I believe this to be the single most important item in your weight loss arsenal. emoticon I'm so glad you have joined us and I look forward to reading your posts often.

You have a great attitude and your goal is fantastic. A long healthy life is one of the best reasons for getting healthy that I can think of. I love your quote. My favorite is "a little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men". It's from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Have a healthy day!!! Pam emoticon emoticon emoticon

I've been fairly active on this team for a couple of weeks and haven't introduced myself.

My name is Theresa - the username is a reminder to myself. I'm 60 and retired in July after 22 years as an admin in a city planning department. My primary goal for retirement is to improve my health so that I can stick around longer for my wonderful husband, three children, six grandchildren, and great granddaughter - and enjoy them.

We live in what is considered rural Washington (but were born in Kentucky where it is really is rural). Only one of our sons and his twin daughters are nearby. Our other son is in New York and our daughter in Florida. We keep up with video chats and Facebook.

I love to walk and dance. I do weight-training but primarily walk and dance to reach my personal daily goals of 10,000 steps and 20 flights.

My health problems (besides my weight) are generally not life-threatening. I have a number of allergies and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives with no known cause). I also have bone spurs on the back of both knees and a bum ankle. But, I bounce instead of breaking when I fall or get injured, so it's not all bad.

My favorite quote probably sums me up best: "If you can't poke fun at yourself, you leave the job to someone else - and they may not be so kind!" (Mark Twain).

emoticon

LOREN,
emoticon Now that I have some information about you I can welcome you a bit more personally. I react to praise myself. It's hard for me to stay motivated when no one is recognizing it. My DH doesn't seem to understand that. Then again he is skinny as a rail and lives off of skittles and soda. And he's healthy as a horse. Some people. I have family in the suburbs of Indiannapolis. It's been a bit since I've been able to visit them. I hope you are enjoying the team. I look forward to seeing you often.

My turn, before I forget!
Username: Lorenver
NAME: Kim, but online I go by Loren, Loren Ver, LV etc.
Where are you from? (state or country): I am currently in Indianapolis IN.
How long have you been with SparkPeople: since 2007, december. So uh 7 years. Thought I had some down time then and again.

Marital Status: Married to a wonderful weirdo
Children and/or pets: No kids, no pets at this time. Lots of plush dogs though
What motivates you:
- knowing that I am doing the right thing
-doing what I said I will do
yah, my sense of responsibility is pretty strong :).
-helping people
I'm into intrinsic motivation. Rewards don't really work for me, but knowing people are proud of me, or can rily on me is what makes me tick.
Okay that was too long for so little reward hehe.
Anything goes: What else would you like to share about you?
Hmm. Let's see.
Spark related things

I do like working out, but I do most of it in the AM before work, so I get up really early. I want to work out more in the morning but getting up earlier just doesn't work. When I get close to the 430 am mark I just can't get going, so 445 is the current time.
On some days I workout multiple times. Right now my work gym is getting a much needed renovation so I don't get my lunchtime workout. :(, Once it is open again January, I'll be back at it with my at work work out buddies.

Over the years I lost over 100 pounds. It took me about 4 years. Then it came back with a vengeance. Now I work towards getting healthy. If the weight goes down, great. If not, i just want to make sure I am the best I can be.

I occasionally do races, not because I am competitive, it just seems like something I should do on occasion. Nice to have a goal :).

Indianapolis IN - Eastern Time Zone.

Did my first Sprint Triathlon September 14th 2014.

Ran my first Marathon, Indianapolis Indiana October 16th 2010.

Also Diet coke is a killer. I used to drink a two liter bottle a day! When I quit the soda and started drinking water I dropped almost 20 pounds in about two months. It does something in your brain that mimics sugar and your body reacts like it is sugar and retains the weight anyway. I didn't like water but forced myself. Now I love water. It's just a matter of training your taste buds.

Have a healthy day!!! Pam emoticon emoticon emoticon

My niece's name is also Christina. I have 4 grandchildren that range from 21-4 and I'm 56 years old. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! emoticon I also love balloons.

I'm so glad you decided to join this awesome team. We are an encouraging, caring bunch of members. I hope you find yourself at home here. emoticon You are a long term SPARKPEOPLE member and chose our team and that makes me really happy.

Setting yourself up with small winnable goals over short periods should help. We need those successes to keep us going, but I'm sure you already know that. I hope you are following your food tracker. I believe this to be the single most important item in your weight loss arsenal. If you eat to many or to few calories it will stall your weight loss efforts. My personal challenge to you is to set yourself up with a reasonable goal for this week and meet that goal. Let me know on the ROLL CALL thread what that goal is so we can all help you get there. Do you accept this

How long have you been with SparkPeople: Since 2012

Marital Status: Married
Children and/or pets: 3 kids - a boy and 2 girls, 2 grandchildren, and 2 dogs

As I am from Australia I was using CalorieKing, but stumbled across Spark People whilst surfing the web. Even though I have to add most of my food to the SP database, I like the support, articles and the fact that I can blog to like minded people and get encouragement and support.

I am 53 years old (54 tomorrow), my children are all grown up, I have one child living at home, my youngest daughter. My oldest daughter is married with twins, boy and a girl (grandkids) and lives a 2 min walk up the road, my son just got married and also lives away from home. I have just completed a Diploma in Management and am commencing a Diploma in Business Administration I am also in my first year of Nutritional Medicine. I am currently out of work, and this depresses me, that is why I turned to study to keep me busy and my mind on other things. I am actively looking for work, but enjoy studying.

I also love animals, like to read and go for long walks, I love the ocean and coastal areas but unfortunately don't live near a coast to satisfy me, but my kids take me for trips to the coastal areas every now and then to keep me satisfied. I love technology, and like to learn how things work and why they do certain things, I am a very curious person when it comes to technology.

What motivates you: I think feeling my clothes fit better. When I feel they're not tight, not only is it more comfortable, but encouraging. My daughter is extremely athletic too and she motivates me to want to be in my best shape as well. I'm also a list maker, so being able to check things off, like achieved goals and whatnot, is fun.

Anything goes: What else would you like to share about you? I love writing, drawing, reading, and photography. And coke - I love it a little too much and that's one thing I'm trying to cut back on. :) I started working part time last spring and since then, have just not found as much time to exercise. Or I have it, but then I'm just tired at the day's end. So I'm hoping by being in a group like this, I can keep up with what I want to accomplish better than I have been on my own!

I took my mom to Victoria, BC last year for Mother's Day. I have to say that your country is beautiful and the people are extremely nice and polite. It was a pleasant surprise as here in the SF Bay Area such is not the case.

You have joined the best team in all of Sparkdom. Maybe I'm a bit biased. We are an encouraging, caring bunch of members. How long have you been with SparkPeople: Since January of 2013... I didn't really get serious about it until July of this year though

Marital Status: Engaged
Children and/or pets: I have one dog named Roy, he's a boxer.
What motivates you: Many things motivate me, but the main thing is that I really enjoy life and I would love to keep on living it for a good long while without feeling like I'm dying with every step that I take.

Anything goes: I'm a bookworm. I love to read books of all kinds, but I guess mainly it's fantasy such as Lord of the Rings and all that good stuff. I love to play games. Right now I'm playing the Sims 4. I'm doing what is called a 100 baby challenge on there currently, lol. I love to craft things. I'm just a geeky crafter :D Also, recently I've discovered that I really do enjoy exercising.

How long have you been with SparkPeople: I'm back after a hiatus. All together, I have been on this site about 5 years I think.

Marital Status: Engaged
Children and/or pets: 2 chihuahuas
What motivates you: I will eventually get married and I would like to look great in my dress. I would also like to be around a long time to come so I can be there for my man and my girls.

Anything goes: What else would you like to share about you?
I love to participate in challenges on this website. I enjoy the weekly challenge teams but my favorite team is The Biggest Loser Mailing List. They have a repeating 12-week challenge. It's challenging, a whole lot of fun and usually commands results!

How long have you been with SparkPeople: I have been a member since 2010, but not really a serious member until last year in June. I had a wake up call when my heart went into AFIB, not life threatening, but a wake up call none the less.

Marital Status: Married for 32 years
Children and/or pets: 2 grown children, 3 grandchildren
What motivates you: trying to always remember my parents died from cancer, and I don't want to follow in their footsteps. I need to change the lifestyle choices that contribute to being overweight.

Hi - My name is Sue. I live in Dunellen, a small town in Central NJ. I remarried 2 years ago after being widowed for 35 years. I have 3 wonderful children & 6 amazing grandchildren. I enjoy knitting, crocheting & reading. I'm semi retired, working 2 days a week. Believe it or not, I don't drive but my little town allows me access to almost everything I need - except a department store. Needless to say, I do a lot of walking & online shopping!!!!!!

On Aug 20th I'll celebrate my first Sparkversary. Although I'm very pleased to have reached this milestone, I'm also disappointed with my weight loss results. I'm hoping that weekly & monthly goals will suit me better & I'll see some results.

From reading your introduction I'm a little concerned. It seems that you find your happiness in others. We all have disappointments in our lives. I lost my father who I was very close to and two years later lost both my siblings within six months of each other. Yes it effected me greatly and I was sad but it did not effect my ability to enjoy life. Portraying happiness to others is not the same thing as being happy. We need to find our happiness from inside ourselves. I'm going to set up a challenge just for you. It's called Mirror Mirror on the wall. I want you to post to the ROLL CALL thread each day and be honest with yourself. Really look in the mirror and tell us how your feeling about you. We are a very encouraging, loving group. I want you to make up 5 positive statements. Two about what you are today and three about what you want to be tomorrow. Each morning I want you to look in the mirror and repeat these statements to yourself. Post them anywhere in your home and at work that you feel comfortable posting them. It's important to feel good about ourselves in order to be successful in our health journey. Let me know what your 5 statements are. Do you accept this challenge? If I'm way off base please let me know. I care!!

What motivates you: and here lies the problem; other than the obvious ones, good health and looking better, I struggle with this. Becoming healthier is my reason for wanting to lose weight but it doesn't always hold me there. I am 50 now and have to take steps to improve my health; lower my blood pressure and move freely without pain.

Anything goes: What else would you like to share about you? I've been struggling with lose in my life for the past 5 years. I lost my dad to cancer 5 years ago and with this alot of my spirit. He was my rock! Then my son left home to find work on the other side of the country and I experienced a different kind of lose but a lose all the same. Then something terrific happened. My brother met the best woman ever who quickly became my best friend, my princess, my carebear! I was so happy again. But this quickly changed too. She was diagnosed with cancer and passed away this past spring. My happiness is gone again. And this explains my lack of motivation. I need help and maybe I've found it here. I've read through alot of posts and you sound like such a terrific bunch I'm looking forward to meeting you all! emoticon

And by the way I am not a downer - I strive to be up. This was only meant to explain some of my struggles. I promise to always be happy (or appear to be anyway) emoticon emoticon

Well we can just modify the challenge I gave you on the ROLL CALL thread. For the next 7 days you must strength train one day and alternate the next day with cardio and we are going to up it to 15 minutes a day. You asked for it you got it. I'm going to work the challenge with you starting with strength training today for at least 15 minutes. Let's go girlfriend.

Eh that won't work either...I drink about 80oz a day. I love water! The best challenge for me would probably involve strength training because I get lax about it really easily.

Actually I only had about fifty to lose to begin with so I've been thinking about it in 10 lb increments. At only 155 lbs if I lost fifty from here I'd be way too thin for my frame!

I've been using the nutrition tracker every day possible since June. It's shown me things I didn't like mind you....

MAGGIE & IRENE,
The best place to get support and accountability in the ROLL CALL thread. Many of us go there to keep each other going in a positive direction and offer encouragement and support. When I first joined the team I found this to be invaluable.

MISSY,
To get and stay healthy it is important to have a good exercise routine. Good eating is not enough in most cases. Personally I hated exercise. I was given a personal challenge to get me started. My personal challenge to you is to exercise as soon as you get up each morning for two minutes. Post to the ROLL CALL thread and let me know if you accept my challenge.

SARAH,
I have some suspected reasons for your weight trouble. You seem to be working out a lot and being very restrictive on you diet. These are assumptions after reading your page. I'm wondering if you are ingesting enough calories. If the ratio of calories ingested is to much lower than the calories burned, your body will stop losing. It is surprisingly easy for us to put our bodies into starvation mode. Once there our bodies cling onto every calorie it can get and stores it as fat because it doesn't know when it will get more. Meantime your body burns muscle instead of fat to keep you going. Also how much water are you drinking? Do you drink diet soda? I used to drink a lot of it. When I gave it up I immediately lost about 20 pounds. Let me know on the ROLL CALL thread if you agree with any of this. I'm not a doctor but since I been through all of this I would love to hear from you.

I hope to hear from all of you soon.

Anything goes: I didn't start gaining weight until after college and getting married. That's when I started working at jobs where I sat all day. I was much less active and my eating got worse. The weight came on really quickly. I struggled for several years and finally last year, I had WLS. I still have about 45 lbs to lose and still struggle with making wise choices with food.

Hi ! New to the team. I'm here to offer and ask for support and accountability. I lost 30 pounds with SparkPeople last year and somehow have just stayed at that spot. I have 30 more to go. The scary thing is, I seem to be gaining back some of what I lost. What a horrible thought.
I'm a world-class procrastinator and it helps me to have people to check in with.
Living in Seattle, two grown (completely wonderful) daughters who I miss, three cats, one big dog. I forget the other items lol ~

PS -My weight ticker only shows that I've lost two pounds but that's b/c I stayed the same for so long that I made a new ticker...

HEATHER. I'm a bit concerned about your goal to lose 40 pounds in 3 months. That is awfully fast and not healthy. A good practical goal is 1-2 pounds per week. I'm afraid you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. I have lost over 100 pounds but it took me 18 months to do it. Please consider revising your goal. I'm looking forward to a long friendship and seeing you often on your journey to a new you.

DANY. I challenge you to exercise for 10 minutes a day for the next 4 days. I know you can do it. Let me know on the ROLL CALL thread if you accept my challenge. I look forward to seeing you often on our challenges.

The ROLL CALL thread is our own little support group. You can always find someone there to listen and encourage you.

Hi there friends, I'm new to this group and have been searching for an active group that I could participate in, it looks like this one has been around for a while and is pretty motivating/active!

Username: danygirl40
NAME: Danielle/Dany
Where are you from? (state or country): Originally a Philly girl but live in South Jersey
How long have you been with SparkPeople: I've been with Spark for about 6 years but started taking it serious about 3/4 years ago, fell off the wagon about a year ago and now I'm back!!!

Marital Status: Married for 12 years
Children and/or pets: I have 2 daughters (23 and 19), they are my world. A stepson (21) and stepdaughter (18)...I also have a pitbull that I call my son as well! ;)
What motivates you: I felt healthy and good for a long time, I want to get that feeling again. I want to motivate people around me.

Anything goes: I need discipline, I'm not able to do this without counting my calories and/or working out. I got really healthy when I was turning 40 and for some reason turning 43 in April has been messing with my mind. I want to feel good about my body and not worry what the scale says. It was very easy to fall into a rut and it hasn't been easy getting out of it but I'm getting there!!! I have to keep reminding myself that baby steps are better than no steps at all! Good luck friends, this is definitely a journey!! ;)

How long have you been with SparkPeople: Well .. a LONG time .. but only on and off. I pray this time I am sparked for good!

Marital Status: HAPPILY .. to the most amazing eon the planet
Children and/or pets: 2 kids, one gone (age 18), one at home (age 14). 2 pets, one cat (age 14), one dog (age 13). The house is pretty old (100+), so there are a few uninvited guests, too .. but we won't talk about that.
What motivates you: Thinking about all the things I cannot do because of my obesity; wanting to qualify for life insurance; wanting to live a long time for my husband and kids.

Anything goes: I began to struggle with my weight around age 8 and have been obese all of my adult life. At 43-years-old, I have never exhibited any of the common health challenges of most obese folks. However, when I went to the doctor in December 2013, I weighed in at my heaviest ever (407) and my blood sugar was slightly elevated, making my doctor concerned I was pre-diabetic. My numbers are back in normal range and my current goal is to reach 366 lbs by my birthday (October 7th), which will represent a loss of 10% of my high weight.

Hi Everyone,
I am Joy and I am 51. I live in Iowa, am married and have one son, one step son, and one step daughter. All grown and out on their own. My husband and I both work and like to travel when we have time for vacation. I am working on losing about 60 pounds and trying to get healthy. I am so tired of feeling tired and sick all the time. I just want to be able to enjoy doing the things I have always enjoyed in the past - hiking, and exploring caves, etc. when we travel.

I have been on Sparkpeople for a long time, but have been inactive for the last year or so. I was injured at work a couple of months ago and trying to recover has given me some extra motivation to get back to work on my health. Unfortunately it also means right now I am limited on what I can do for physical challenges. Hopefully not to much longer. :)

Looking forward to getting to know you all better!

I also love dancing. I use my Wii and do Just Dance. I love it and I get a great cardio workout. I often lose track of time when I'm doing that.

We always have 3 challenges going on at all times. I look forward to finding you there. Also come by the ROLL CALL thread. It's become our own support page. Many of us reply to everyone's post but it is not necessary. Some just pop in and out to let us know how their progressing. We would love to meet you. I hope you drop by.

Have a great weekend!!!

Hi all! just joined the team and wanted to say helloooo. :-D

I'm Nicole, look fwd to getting to know you and participate in this awesome lookin team ya got here! ;-)

Where are you from? (state or country): Tampa, FL
How long have you been with SparkPeople: ohhh gosh, off and on for prolly 8 years

Marital Status: Single
Children and/or pets: Nope neither
What motivates you: to be fit and active and get better at the activities like (races and snowboarding) i like to do

Anything else... I enjoy running... well its walk/jogging right now! But i like to get outside and enjoy the air that way... participating in 5k's mostly (done one 10k and another coming up dec).. i also love things like Zumba and fun dance/group workout types of things. Became totally addicted to Orangetheory but moved quite a distance from my nearest one and am still trying to work the 30 min drive to that location back into my schedule somehow. Besides that I just occasionally hit the elliptical and do a lot of body weight strength training with some heavy weight leg presses/arm/upper body lifting!

HI Dorothy, welcome! I'm about 3 weeks away from being 49, and I also live in California :)

I've been here on Sparkpeople for about 3 weeks now, and it's great! The fitness and nutrition trackers are a huge help to me with seeing what I'm actually eating in calories, and the fitness tracker is good for helping me see how much I'm exercising.

There are a lot of neat features here, so be sure to check them out!

(Just an FYI, I prefer Kimberly to Kim...thanks! :) )

Winning the battle one choice at a time...if I can do it, you can too!

Giving up on a goal because of a setback is like slashing your other 3 tires because you got a flat. NEVER GIVE UP!
