Hi there..I actually slept well last night after signing up here and completing 2 out of 30 days of a juice fast. Deep sleep is rare for me as I'm also dealing with mental health issues.
Peace and well wishes to all emoticon

Hi, Patricia, I'm Ali,welcome to the group, it's been helpful to to make commitments to the group regarding my tablet addiction emoticon , late at night, and simply not getting enough sleep. emoticon

Do you also have sleep apnea, I do, newly diagnosed, I need to get a CPAP MACHINE but I've been dragging my heels to meet with the people to get set up for one, I' emoticon m kind of nervous and scared. There is also a group for Sleep Apnea if that affects you.

Take care, let me know if I can help you in anyway, and if you'd like to be a SparkFriend with me that's OK too. Check out my Spark Page for further info about me!

I also use my cpap every night. Nose pillows work for me. I just need to close my eyes and get to sleep but I find it very difficult to do. Tapping on this tablet sure does not help.

Hi, Wilsonwr, I have sleep apnea too and use CPAP therapy. I could not get used to a full face mask. Have you thought about using a TAP mask? If you are not a mouth breather, a TAP may be an alternative to shaving the beard. I like mine. It uses a mouth piece, sort of like a sports moith guard you boil and fit to your upper teeth. You hold the mask to your face by holding the mouth piece with your teeth. The air is delivered through nasal pillows that fit inside the openings of your nostrils. No head gear needed, nothing covering your chin cheeks or nose, no pressure sores. I hope this suggestion is a possible fix to your issue. You and your Wife deserve a solution to at least one of your challenges.

emoticon My name is Emmy. When I've had stressful projects at school I've always stayed up around the clock to get them done. My latest and worst bout with insomnia has come when I stayed up for 5 days straight to write 40 poems for a chapbook contest that only happens every two years and I can't get back on track, sleeping a couple of hours in the day, a couple at night. Overexerting myself with exercise between 9:30pm and 11:30pm, the only time I'm awake enough to get my 2 hours in for the Fall 5% Challenge hasn't helped. I've also recently had a decrease in medication and have been taking 2-3mg of clonazepam to try to sleep, waking up after a few hours. I've tried many, many of the hypnosis resources on Youtube. emoticon emoticon I'm totally burnt out like so many of you in this group. I look forward to meeting you and making new friends. Let's hope for good luck with our challenges. Best, Emmy :))

Hi, everyone!

I just joined the group after lying wide awake in bed until 8 a.m. this morning. (Good times.)

I have on and off again bouts of insomnia. I'm 38 and struggle with it less and less (I've had them since childhood). I'm hoping that with some space from the holidays and continued workouts, I'll be sleeping more regularly.

Peace to each one of you.

best,
Janet

Now that's what I can a full day of dark news. Please let me know how things are going. You've got your plate more than full. That's for sure. Sometimes writing down in your journal that you have an appt the next day and what your concerns are, it will help take the worry asway and let you sleep a little bit.

God bless you both with your medical issues. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Glad your beard was saved :D

Hugs,

I've had the beard about 14 years now. I did make an adjustment on the mask yesterday that really seemed to help stop the leaks - maybe the beard is saved for a little while... I read your suggestions below. I already read about a half hour each evening before I turn off the light. I also don't watch TV or use the computer in the bedroom. The sleep journal is a great idea - I'll start doing that. I can fall asleep just fine - I just can't stay asleep. I let little things bother me and if I get up to go to the bathroom, I simply can't go back to sleep. Last night I slept very little, primarily because I see the doctor today about the esophogus obstruction they found - he will go over the biopsy results. Needless to say, this has me nervous. We also see my wife's oncologist about the progression of her disease. Not a fun day.

Take care and thanks for all the suggestions!

But it's now causing your problems with your Cpap. Why don't you ask her if she'd rather you keep it or be able to get your breathing without leaks on your Cpap?

It's just a suggestion. I know my son is very attached to his beard, but he doesn't have a wife now, sooooo ... What do you say?

How long have you had your beard?

I'm just being curious and wondering how much your beard might be part of your Cpap problems.

Also check out the entry just before your first one and see what I suggested for her. I know you can't do anything about the noise or light, but there may be other things that could help like keeping a Sleep Diary where you can handwrite down the things that are bothering you and that you have to do the next day, etc. OK?

Renie

My wife is on dialysis 10 hours every night, so that makes it difficult to arrange a sleep schedule (unless I sleep in the guest room). I can't use a full CPAP mask because of my beard, but the nose pillows typicaly work unless I have a restless night (tossing and turning) - then it leaks until I adjust them. The light from the dialysis machine will be a problem. It's hard to cover it up since it gives the status of the dialysis and shows alarms if problems develop during the night (a frequent occurrence). I don't know, as much as I hate to do it, I may need to try sleeping in the other room.

Thanks for the advice!

Wow, Wilson, have you ever got your hands and mind full of worries and problems. I'm so sorry about your poor wife. That must be very difficult to deal with for both of you.

Is it possible for the two of you to get on a schedule? or does her dialysis make that impossible? Do you work out of the home? I would normally advise you to keep a Sleep Diary and eat a small snack of dairy and grain about an hour before bed. Do you have any idea why your Cpap leaks? Do you have a full-face mask? Do you have your mask tightened up enough to keep it from leaking?

The bright light is going to be a major problem. Is there anything you can do about that? Cover it up or anything? The noise could act as white noise and actually help, but the light is a different story. No TV, no computer, no lighted clocks, etc. Do some rearranging and see if that helps.

Please let us know how any of these suggestions help out.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hugs,
Renie

I just made a post to the "support" topic, but it looks like I should have made my initial posting here....

This is my first time joining ths team. I have multiple problems affecting my sleep: (1) I've always had insomnia (waking up and not being able to go back to sleep for quite a while), (2) I've got sleep apnea - I do use my CPAP machine, but occasional mask leaks can wake you up, and (3) my wife has a terminal illness and uses a home dialysis machine (fairly noisy and emits a fairly bright light), and (4) depression from my wife's illness tends to keep me awake often. Needless to say, I'm not getting much sleep at all and I'm tired all the time. I have done fairly well losing weight with recent exercise and diet changes, but I need to do something about the sleep to help improve my overall health. I'm eager to see and hear all the suggestions!

Hi, there Georgia. It sounds like you're doing a lot of good things to help you sleep. The only thing I'd recommend is trying using a Sleep Diary. Write in it with an actual pen or pencil about turning off the TV and computer about an hour before bedtime. If your computer is in your bedroom, find a way to move it out. Write down what time you brush your teeth, take your meds, put on your jammies, and get into bed. I read too. So, the last entry is that I will read for an hour and then in an hour, I turn off my reading lamp and go to sleep. I now have a Cpap to go along with my oxygen tank to struggle with and it makes it a little harder to read, but I manage.

Best of luck, Sweetie, let me know if it works.

Hi. I'm Georgia. I have insomnia. I go at least 2-3 nights a week with no sleep. I do have bipolar so I need my sleep. But I do know when I don't sleep, a lot of the time it is because I am manic. I have a sleeping aid but I don't like to take it. It makes me sleep too much. I try taking my night meds early (about 8) and try to be in bed by 11. I will read in bed to relax me.

Being consistent is so important. Something that really helps with that is using a Sleep Diary. Turn off your TV and Computer about an hour before bedtime. Those are powerful messages to your brain that it is time for bed and sleep.

I have some great links on my Blog about Sleep Hygiene if you need further info.

Best of luck emoticon And God bless you on your journey.

Patricia and everyone else new. I've been here 90 days and feel somewhat like a veteran. If anyone is having difficulty still with the basic function and navigation of the site and its major features, please let me know. I am all to happy to help. No such thing as a stupid question either!

And as for sleep: one Simply Sleep before bed works like a charm. Otherwise, its somewhat of a Russian Roulette experience for me. Falling asleep is never much of a problem. Staying asleep is a different issue, made worse by all the Sparky water I am renting. Once I'm up for a potty run, not uncommonly my brain is warping out of orbit tackling the challenges of the forthcoming day...

In this group, I assume I am not alone in this.. .

emoticon to SparkPeople Patricia!

Did you get your Nutrition Tracker working yet? It is a great tool to keep me on track to make sure that I am not only keeping track of my calories but that I also get the right amount of protein and not too many carbs and fat. As a vegetarian, getting enough protein without too many carbs is hard to do some days.

I hope you get your Sparkpage up and running so so we can "visit" you.

Hi, DancingGram. Long time no see. It's good to see you're still perky as ever. Keep up that dancing.

Patricia: Welcome. It might help to set up a SparkPage, so we can see the teams you have joined. It's been so long ago since I started my nutrition tracker, I can't remember what I did. However, I do know mine is set up for a diabetes diet. And it knows I have heartburn. I believe it must be picking up these things from the teams I join.

Click on Home under My Trackers. Then click on the square about setting up a SparkPage. Then open Home again, and click on the square about Teams. Okay?

Let us know how it goes.

Hope this helps, sweetie. emoticon
