My endocrinologist has us on a low carb and ancestral ("real food") diet by prescription. It's worked extremely well for us, for different reasons. I've lost about 160 pounds on it, with no exercise (I'm stuck in a powerchair), and I'm much healthier. My lab results are awesome.
This is not a "fad". LC has been around as a health and weight-loss tool since the 1800s. Atkins is the most recent one we hear of, but he's not alone in it. Weight loss is a corollary benefit, by the way. Improved health is primary. If you want to educate yourself on the science of the lifestyle, pick up the book. The older one is better - but the new one explains it well, too. There is an organized plan, food do's and don'ts, and meal plans. It's an easy lifestyle to adopt, once you can teach yourself away from all the high-carb products we're still having pressed upon us. And the adaptation only takes about 2 weeks. After that, it's pretty clear sailing. Check the several low carb forums here. Lots of good experience there to draw from.
Any diet is a unique journey, and has to be adapted to your own individual metabolism. But this lifestyle is a healthy one for pretty much anybody. Just don't try to "wing it" - learn the whys and the foundation and decide if it's right for you. Otherwise, it's going to fail, just as any diet will fail if you don't stay with it.

to one of my many home, here is SparkPeople Land! Your goal of 100 lbs., is very attainable, but I suggest you start out by saying you want to lose 10 lbs. so you won't have this looming number, which you may thing is impossible to get to, hanging in front of you, which could ultimately derail you!
I've been where you are, as I've lost over 200 lbs. I know all to well the difficulties and the triumphs you'll have. If you Work the SparkPeople Plan, the Plan will Work for you, and I can say that with confidence! After I lost all that weight, my Acid Reflux and GERD, went away. It did rear its ugly head one time, as I over ate and then I was miserable! I vowed never again, to over eat, and by God's Grace I haven't.
