On ECD vs. contra -- I don't have the luxury of giving up one or the other if I want to dance regularly but I would still do both anyway. Obviously, contra is a blast and allows more for expressing individual creativity with spins and twirls. English is more about timing and the satisfaction of having the whole set do the same thing at the same time. Also, if it's too sedate, it's the fault of the caller for calling similar dances. Dublin Bay, Jack's Maggot, Corelli's Maggot, Mary K and many more are all vigorous dances. Even easier and slower dances work your legs and butt in different ways because of the setting (the up and down movement that you don't get in contra). In other words, I'm winded and sweating when I leave a contra dance, but I have a hard time walking the next day when I've been to an English dance!

I hope you'll try English again. It does have a much steeper learning curve than contra but, once you get past the first couple of weeks, you'll probably get the hang of it. I met my husband at an ECD ball, we had an ECD ball the night before our wedding, and I plan to give an even bigger one once the divorce is final! LOL

We're in South Florida which has several small dances. I just started dancing again in May, having moved down here in 2010 from DC, where it is possible to dance contra twice a week and English once a week, and there is a dance within an hour's drive (Frederick, Baltimore, Annapolis, Shepherdstown) every Saturday. I drive up to Central or Northern Florida to dance when I can get away.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area, and I don't ever visit anymore, the driving and parking is so frustrating. So I totally hear you.

And I agree that Sacramento has a really nice vibe in general, although I've never danced there.

My cousin is in the folk music scene in Davis (mostly fiddle).

Never, ever, EVER give up!

Hi All,

I used to contradance more in the San Francisco Bay area, but the driving necessary, since I already drive a very long commute, has stopped me from going much anymore. Lots of good opportunities though in the Bay Area here, BACDS is the big organization, and there are others also in the area. Great musicians and callers.

When I do contradance these days, the most tempting dances to me are the ones out in Sacramento, even though it is an hour and a half drive--the people are the nicest out that way I think.

Edith

Hugs -- Edith Started at 220, made goal 160 now I have to get there again :-)

Keep Dancing. Joy is the best exercise.

hello :)
We used to square dance - our club became so small.
We LOVE to contra dance - but often find it too late (I start work at 5 am, so at 10 and 11 pm - I wish to be sleeping). We have gone to a club in Baltimore, one in Annapolis and I know Glen Echo has many dances available. Very fun exercise!

Ted Crane and Bob Nichols are the ones who usually come down here. I knew I would know the names, once reminded...
We branch out to Lewisburg, Lewistown, Harrisburg, and points south. I think some of our callers even come up from Baltimore. But I haven't gotten into driving to dances...my schedule hasn't allowed it, nor my budget...
We are on vacs right now but will start again in August.

Hmm. Callers I know from Ithaca are Ted Crane and Pamela Goddard.

Others in the area include Katy Heine, Casey Carr, Sharon Perry, and Bob Nichols, Sara VanNorstrand, just off the top of my head.

Rochester isn't exactly Finger Lakes and neither is Syracuse, and neither is Binghamton, but they are all close enough to get to if there is a special dance, and in the case of Rochester I even sometimes dance there on weeknights.

I haven't tried international folk yet, although there are plenty of opportunities for that. Heck, the past 5 days looked something like this:

Wednesday - contra in Ithaca
Thursday - contra in Rochester
Friday - contra in Morrisville (Syracuse)
Saturday - contra in Ithaca
Sunday - ECD in Rochester

(And then I wondered on Monday why my feet seemed kind of tender and my knees were stiff? LOL)

State College, PA. And we get some callers down from Ithaca! I can't keep their names straight though. Mention a few & I may know!
I didn't realize that Rochester area was considered Finger Lakes. You are so lucky to be in that area! One of the best for contra.
Occasionally there is an ECD or a square dance figure (4 couple squares) at our dances but I tend to prefer contra also. We have a tiny international folk group which does a real variety of dances, lots of East European - that is also great fun and mostly done in circles. Not as energetic as contra though...

Ok so I tried the ECD last night and here are my impressions:

1) overall very similar to contra in the figures, progression, and general structure.
2) a lot slower. And done to a variety of beats (2/3, 3/4, as well as 4/4). I had more trouble figuring out when each figure was supposed to begin. We weren't always in unison which implies to me that I wasn't the only one with this problem.
3) a few 'new' figures I don't often see in contra (full figure eights, single turns, etc)
4) emphasis on grace and floatiness. Which was kind of nice, actually.
5) reasonable calorie burn (400+ in 3 hrs). Which is about half o
f what I burn during the same amount of time doing contra
6) much less physical contact with the other dancers. Mostly limited to hands. Which isn't bad just different.
7) music was pleasant and live but more sedate

So overall would I do it instead of contra?

To be honest, probably not. One of the things I like about contra is the energy and intensity. I would consider supplementing contra with ECD but definitely not replacing it.

I contra regularly in Columbus Ohio. The summer opportunities are less than during the school year since the most frequent group does not meet (building has no air). www.bigscioty.com/

I've never tried Scottish but if it's anything like the social forms of Irish and English dancing, it will be fun for sure.

Sometimes they throw in an English Country Dance during a contra dance and I like them. In fact I liked the two I did on Friday so much that I'm going to go investigate the ECD in Rochester tonight.

There are lots of people who do both contra and ECD. The difference as far as I've been told is that contra is more vigorous and stays at a more simplified, beginner-friendly level. ECD is more floaty and has more complicated figures and dances, from what I've heard.

For example, in Rochester they do beginner-friendly ECD the first, third, and fourth Sunday, and on the second Sunday it's for advanced dancers only. I almost never hear of an "advanced dancers only" contra dance. And they have an annual Jane Austen Ball where they require people who want to attend to wear period costume and if they want to dance they have to already know how to do it.

I'll be able to tell you more later after I come back from my adventure later today. LOL

I live in Conway, central Arkansas. There is contra dancing in North Little Rock, about 40 minutes south. I haven't gone yet, but I had one recent experience doing contra dance at a community event. I enjoyed it, and would like to explore it further. The only problem is that the meeting times of the NLR conflict with another service activity I've been involved with for several years. So I'm in the process of sorting all this out.

http://www.arkansascountrydance.org/

I notice that Scottish Dance and English Country Dance are on nights which which I have no conflict...?

I'm in the Upstate NY area and dance mostly in Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca. We're lucky - Ithaca alone has THREE contra dance organizations!

Plus there's English Country Dancing all over the place too.

In the fall I'm going to investigate the modern western square dancing in Auburn. I've heard there are some differences, and maybe I won't like it, but maybe I will, and I won't know until I try!
