I will answer my question here, and hope to create awareness as well. Initially I like so many took sleep for granted. It was one thing we pretty much didn't have to worry about, just go to bed and go to sleep,

I have obstructive sleep apnea and suffered greatly of the inability to sleep. Once diagnosed I grew to value the benefits of sleep and still do. Make sure you get an adequate amount of sleep each night. If you or someone you know suffers from sleep apnea have them see a doctor this is serious and can lead to death if not treated properly. Do not take or give sleeping pills to one that can not sleep they could have an obstruction of the airway and die. Ignoring the situation and symptoms can lead to heart and lung problems as well. The treatment is simple, use of a C-Pap or Bi-Pap machine nightly helps one with sleep apnea rest soundly getting the best quality sleep and the pressures of air determined by your neurologist will keep your airway open as you sleep and you can rest comfortably and with peace of mind.

Question? Are you happy with your weight loss at this time? What should you or could you do differently?

To answer your question Deb no I have not subscribed to any fitness magazine. Years ago they had a walking magazine and I loved it and its stories, but they stopped making it apparently and after that I never subscribed to another. So do you have one you would recommend?

Question? Do you value sleep and make sure you get at least 8 hrs sleep a night?

I use the Spark Peoples Fit, Firm and Fired Up DVD with Coach Nicole. I love it because it breaks down exercise into 10 minute, doable segments per day. Each day targets a new body area, so that by the end of the week you have done an overall total body workout. I am thinking of getting the Body Sculpting DVD from the Spark People, but I have to wait for available funds to open up later on in the month. I love the DVD's because they are easily doable and effective.

Do you subscribe to any fitness or health magazines and do you find them a great help?

Good question again Deb. I have 1 # weights and I have used them from time to time when walking, or for upper body work-out. Was a big help to me doing arm curls and such when I was recovering from my shoulder surgery and it did help to increase my flexibility. I need to get back to using them more to tone as I lose.

My question? If you use DVD exercise tapes, what one do you like best and why?

This is a really good question. I have had that happen to me and I think that everyone does. No I don't think it is a bad thing or something that is not fixable. When I go over my caloric intake for the day, I make small changes throughout the week to compensate for the overage. This doesn't take much effort. It means eating more towards the lower end of your calorie range for a few days, not some giant change that is going to deprive you of food. It is not fatal, nor does it have to be a big deal. When you compensate for changes in this manner, you are still keeping to your program without destroying your food plan.

What are some of your favorite strength training exercises? Do you use props or just body weight?

Great question. Actually years ago I remember doing an exercise for cardio that was from a tape tat Cher made and it involved resistance bands. I made the mistake of lending it to someone and never got it back. I have searched even on ebay with hopes of finding one, and can only hope at some point it will evolve again.

I do have Jane Fonda Walk-out that is on cassette and goes in a walkman, and it is my all time favorite. Basically I think any form of exercise that gets your heart rate up is a great cardio workout.

Have you ever had on your journey a day when you exceed all your calories and nutrients for the day, (not saying pig out, making good choices, but found you were incredibly hungry and ate more)? How did you handle it, and do you think its a bad thing?

Yes, I watch my sodium intake. It's important for your body's fluid maintenance. It is also a primary cause of high blood pressure if you consume too much salt. I happen to have high blood pressure, so I watch my salt intake.

What is your choice of cardio workout? Have you ever tried any other cardio activities?

I personally make most everything from scratch, I find its cheaper and more wholesome and I better know what is going into the dish or meal as it would be. Leftovers are rare, I have learned through the years to cook the right amount for our size of family, but if there is leftovers they are placed in microwave containers and divided into single servings for quick and easy accountability. Great Question!!

Do you watch your sodium intake daily? Do you think it is important, if not why?

I usually thrive on fruit, as many kinds as I can eat. I eat grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, musk melons, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and apples to name a few. I keep a few in season fruits on hand every week. I like to go to the Farmer's Markets and pick up on local produce. It's a fun excursion and good food.

Do you cook in bulk and freeze, or make meals daily from scratch, or both?Which is most convenient?

Good question deb, and I really had to think about this one a bit.

For me and my family we use fresh berries or apples in pies. Watermelon in fresh fruit salad, and I love making a fresh strawberry pie, or strawberry shortcake (with angel food cake and lite cool whip).

The family snacks on fresh fruit and fruit dips, or caramel dip, and hubby loves bananas with his favorite ice cream or will make banana splits.

Question: What do you choice for a healthy snack when others are eating junk food?

I use Olive and Cannola oils depending on what I am frying or using it for. Olive oil is best at lower temperatures. I like Cannola for baking cakes, brownies, etc. Of course Olive is great for salad dressings, mayonnaise and emulsions.

How do you use in season fruits? In jams, jellies, compotes?

I always prefer fresh and I do think cooking from fresh produce has got to be healthier. I think frozen over time loses its wholesome goodness and if it is freezer burnt the taste can't compare to fresh veggies.

Question: If you have to use oil for frying something, which do you prefer and feel is healthiest?

Music can definitely affect my mood. If it's upbeat I am happy if its melancholy then I can be sad. I prefer to surround myself with upbeat tunes, since it does have such a pleasant effect on me.

Do you prefer to cook fresh vegetables or frozen? Which do you feel is healthier?

I am a morning person. I am up every day by 4:00 am, so that I can take care of the baby while my daughter gets ready to leave for school. I make the coffee while she's in the shower. She leaves the house by 6:00 am to get to school by 8:00 am. Right now my car is broken, so I can't take her to school and drop her off as I usually do. So, she has to take the bus. I prefer to be up with the birds and watch the sunrise every day. On clear days we have some of the most beautiful sunrises ever. I love to see the colors and listen to the birds sing. I find it very peaceful and relaxing.

Do you prefer the beach or the mountains?

Most definitely walking. Even when you are ailing it seems that walking is do-able. I love to walk our city bike/walking path not far from my home. It overlooks a lake and it is nice to see all the activity, ducks, kids playing, and there is something to be said about connecting with nature, and taking in the sights and sounds of whatever the season when walking in such a place for exercise and rejuvenation.

Question: Are you a morning person, or a night owl?

Meditation, aromatherapy and relaxation exercises are what I use most to really relax. I find that deep breathing and meditation are good ways to really give my mind and body a good rest. It recharges my batteries and helps me think more clearly. I feel centered and less sketchy.

Question? What types of exercise do you like to do? Swimming, hiking, biking, walking?

I have never worked out in a gym but I am very modest and in places like that I would imagine I would be self-conscious, so I would have to say I prefer in the home. However, if I was in better shape I think I would enjoy the gym and having available all those different machines to work out on, or if I had a friend to go to the gym with and workout I think that would be fun.

Question? Do you take time to relax and if so what is your preference? Aromatherapy, Massage, Yoga, Meditation or some other means?

I think that you need a balance of carbs, proteins and fats. Eating too few carbohydrates can lead to inadequate fiber intake, which is essential for your digestive health. It can lead to a vitamin and mineral deficiency and can cause ketosis, so you'll want to make sure that you balance your carbohydrates along with your proteins and fats. As a diabetic, carbs are extremely important to you. They create the glucose our bodies use for energy and are essential for good health. Since they are a blood sugar thing, you must pay close attention to your carbohydrates and what type that you ingest. Of course, I'm sure that you know this and do so when managing your diabetes.
Question: Does drinking ice water as opposed to room temperature water have any affect on the metabolism?

Okay so here is my question, I use to be one that would just about sacrifice every food group to have a bunch of Carbohydrates. Since being here at SP and even when I was here before I have noticed a big decline in my carb intake, is too few carbs a bad thing? What do you think?

* I might add too that I am type 2 diabetic and insulin dependent so I strive to keep a better balance*
