Good morning friends. I joined the challenge at the beginning of this very busy week. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to introduce myself. My name is Sonja. I'm a disabled RN. I have been overweight most of my life. But, after I went out on disability in November of 2011, the pounds really started piling up. When I hit 300 pounds in December of 2012, I knew that it was time to really get serious about losing some weight. Since I'm not able to work anymore, cost was a major deterrent to most weight loss programs. I found Sparkspeople on the web January 3rd of this year. I could not believe that such an amazing resource was available for free. Once I started tracking everything I put in my mouth, I learned alot about the bad habits I had formed over the years. I realized that I was drinking more calories in a 24 hour period than I was allowed for the entire day. WOW!!! The amount of calories, sugar, and sodium in my "staples" (coffee, tea, & mountain dew) was unbelievable. I've done pretty well at cutting those things out of my diet. But, I also realized that I was not getting enough fruits and vegetables. Adding 2 fruits a day was pretty easy but, I was still struggling with getting enough of the right kinds of vegetables. All my life, most of my "vegetables" consisted of pinto beans, potatoes, and corn. I realized that those items were mostly starch and I needed to incorporate some real vegetables into my diet. That's why I decided to join this challenge. It's exactly what I need. I'm learning how to prepare and eat alot more vegetables. The recipe database has been a a big help to me. I've learned that in order to insure that I eat the right kinds of food, I have to plan ahead and prepare it early. That way I have something healthy to eat ready when I get hungry. Otherwise, I'm tempted to grab something quick and easy which, in my case, usually means not so healthy. This morning, I have prepared a huge crock pot full off stew with 3 boneless skinless chicken breast and tons of fresh vegetables. I should not have any problem getting all my vegetables in today.
