I really don't know if the AA food helps to fight cancer, but in case it does, I am trying to eat as many AA food as I can. Some members with a history of cancer feel very confident with this food and many others have seen improvements in their health, me included. I am blessed because I never had cancer and I want to keep it at bay.
SUNFLOWERGAMMY, I hope that everything goes well with your biopsy.

In January 2009 I had an electrical event in my head which caused permanent issues with my eyes and mobility. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis by the end of that year. My disability has grown increasingly worse and I know that being morbidly obese is not helping my physical condition. Inflammation in the body seems to be something that comes up alot when researching disease. What ultimately led me to this team is the fact that I am 51 years old and my gynecologist had told me I was in menopause after stopping menses in October 2011 with no issues until Thanksgiving day this year when I started bleeding! Got to doctor asap and she ordered a couple of different ultrasounds and said I have a uterine polyp that has developed rapidly and my uterus has thickened instead of thinned (I had ultrasound in May of this year with no sign of the polyp at that time and uterus was thinner and that was just 6 months ago) Of course the C word automatically crosses the mind and researching online just increases the concern. I am scheduled for biopsy's later this month as I refused a D&C which the doctor suggested as I wanted to go the least invasive route first and radically changing my diet can't hurt as a matter of fact I believe it will help heal!
Well that is my story about why I joined the team.

Hi everyone! I'm Marilyn (from Georgia) - I'm 65 and retired. I joined after reading some of the posts and listened to Dr. Li's uTube speech. Cancer runs in my family - I've lost two brothers to lung cancer (yes, they both smoked although the second one had stopped eight years before he got cancer) and a sister and an aunt to breast cancer. So when I see articles or information about eating to prevent cancer I am quite interested.

I've also read 'Eat to Live' and am doing my best to live by that program but am not quite there yet. But I'm working on it!!

Welcome Patricia,
Sue I love your welcome letter and explanations of how you make this work! Thanks again for your good leadership of this team.

Update 10/15/13 I have victory in eating plan for the first time in my life...By always thinking of the AA foods and having them in good supply, I have succeeded in loosing weight without regaining ...slowly but steadily since February. Now down 25# and goal of 10 more by Christmas ...adding good-for-me spices has been a great help plus using portion control with these positive foods has been wonderful!

Hi, Patricia,
You are doing the right things, being proactive for your health leading up to your surgery. I am currently cancer free, stopped chemo after surgeries, radiation and 4 years of chemotherapy in Nov. 2011. Then I discovered anti-angiogenic foods and started increasing them to try to keep it from coming back a third time. And I think that list coupled with Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live have worked to improve my health tremendously.

How do I do that? I plan my meals for the food categories for eat to Live by plugging in foods from the anti-angiogenic list first.

Example

Daily, I'm to eat:
Minimum of 4 fruits: orange apple cherries /pineapple, banana Things in front of / are anti angiogenic, after it aren't.

1 pound of raw vegetables: a chopped tomato (anti-angiogenic says to cook tomatoes and mushrooms), onion, garlic, spinach, / romaine

1 pound of cooked vegetables: eggplant casserole with cooked tomatoes, garlic, onion, mushrooms, peppers, kale/ I might add a serving of green beans or carrots

1 ounce seeds nuts: I choose from almonds, walnuts, cashews or their butters, and flax seed. All are "AA" and give me the needed natural fats and fiber.

I can have 2 servings starches (includes whole grains, potatoes, winter squashes, carrots and parsnips) Sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots are the only thing on the AA list. (maybe parsnips?) So I usually eat one of those at one meal and then have a whole grain like brown rice or oat groats or a homemade bread for the other serving.

I'm not a complete vegetarian and sometimes eat animal products. I try to select from the AA list and that for me means gouda or jarlsberg cheese on a salad or wrap, or dark meat roasted chicken, or Greek Yogurt. I was relying heavily on these things last fall/winter but have moved away from them spring/summer. It wasn't a conscious decision. Just happened gradually. Now I might eat cheese or meat or fish once a week, where I used to choose something animal daily.

I started out trying to create 1 meal a day with 5 AA foods like Dr. Li talks about in his video.
Now I try to do that for every meal and usually succeed if I eat at home. It is harder if I go out to eat. Tonight we went to Wendy's. I had a side salad (shredded carrot and a couple of grape tomatoes) with honey mustard dressing, yogurt with a quartered strawberry, chocolate chunk cookie (chocolate) : D So I lucked out with the 7 AA ingredients. (carrot, tomato, honey, yogurt, strawberry, chocolate, tea)

Yesterday we ate at Wendys and I had an Asiago chicken flatbread sandwich. The only redeemable ingredient was tomato.

Note about the cookie today: Everything I've read since cancer talks about how cancer cells thrive on sugar. I know carbs, like in all those healthy veggies eventually breaks down to sugar. But in my mind I see the chocolate chunk cookie flooding my system with a Niagara Falls of a sugary syrup allowing the cancer monsters to gain control again. That visual usually helps me stay away from the treats that rely on sugar, white flour, and/or manufactured fats.

Have you had time to watch Dr. Li's video? I think it is very interesting that the same mechanism that fights cancer, also fights diabetes and arthritis and macular degeneration, and obesity and more. No wonder I'm feeling better that I have since 1985!

Please keep us posted on how you're doing, and feel free to ask us for help.

Hi KIN59VARA. Welcome to the team. I hope that eating more AA foods helps you to decrease the tumor.

You can start checking the foods that you already eat that are anti-angiogenic, and from there, start including more like turmeric, ginger, cocoa, etc.

Take care, emoticon emoticon KIN59VARA

I have a tumor on my parotid gland and I would like to eat healthy to see if I can decrease the tumor. I am scheduled for surgery December 20.

I would love to continue to have suggestions on how best to eat healthy.

Hi everyone! I just stumbled on this sight and found it very interesting. Using food instead of medicine beats everything hands down. Both my mother and father have had colon cancer, and father has had prostate cancer too. My sister has had bad paps for years(she is younger than me) and I have had bad paps for at least 4-5 years. All biopsies and other tests come back clean. I also had dysplasia about 22 years ago.. Right now doctor wants to do hysterectomy. Told them to wait and do another pap in 6 months. I am hoping this site can help.

Hi! So glad this team exists! I'm battling arthritis and obesity. I was also battling high blood pressure, but Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live diet has dramatically lowered that. I've been rigidly following the Eat to Live plan for three weeks and the results have been amazing. Now, it's time to crank it up a notch and incorporate as many AA foods as I can into the eating plan. The two seem very compatible and I am looking forward to better health and a less painful future.

Thank you so much for starting this team!

You're doing great! If you're planning to put the spices in the tea bag wrappers you're defeating the purpose... you are supposed to consume the spices. What you could do instead of the tea, is mix the spice and then put it into a gelatin capsule and swallow that (I'm doing this with tumeric and gelatin). Most people find that to be more of a bother than it's worth with the tea. The capsules allow for volume in a tidy bundle.

I don't suppose you've noticed any changes yet? Do you have any blood pressure issues? The change here is dramatic and expedient.

Now, I'm off again... don't know when I'll be back... it is BUSY week for me.

Nice to see you back!! I managed 2 glasses today. First with 1/8 t. and the next with 1/2 t. and I didn't need to dilute either one. I did drink them faster. My glasses are 8 ounce, The other thing I did last time was to whirl the water and spices in the nutribullet. I probably won't ever do that again!!.

Good way to make a kicker of a hot sauce!!

I'm going to get tea bag wrappers tomorrow!!

Either me or my eyes are shrinking. ; ) Very interesting experiment I'm involved in. Thanks.

Uh oh! I guess I chose the wrong time to be super busy and not checking in on SparkPeople!

Wow, BRAVELUTE, you are one 'brave' woman... if that had been my experience, I'd likely have stopped right there, lol.

It IS a spicey drink, and it goes down easiest as a shooter... don't taste it or think too much about it because it is a bit daunting (the more water, the harder it is to get down).... though I quite like it... and it does get easier.

The cayenne website is the best resource to fully understand the impact on the body... and I think we underestimate what our skin can tell us - good skin usually means everything else is working optimally. The fact that cysts I have had all of my life (I'm 52) disappeared within two weeks speaks volumes to me... and if moles have stopped forming, and my liver/metabolic function has improved, I worry less about cancer. As I stated below:

As for the tea, most of the changes are blood pressure, skin and liver function related. The most notable:

before the tea, my moles seems to be multiplying overnight... after the tea they started disappearing, and I have not developed any more.
my roseacea 'healed'
I had several life-long sebaceous cysts on my face that disappeared over a two-week time period and have not returned
my digestion and elimination improved greatly
my blood presure normalized within days

My personal belief is that the spices stimulated my liver function, and then my liver took care of the rest.

I started using cayenne pepper to address my blood pressure issues (based on another Spark's experience). As I was working my way up to a tsp. of cayenne pepper a day, I continued to read and decided to add other spices as indicated (all these spices - cumin, cinnamon, tumeric, cayene pepper, ginger - all work in concert with each other). I found the cayenne pepper, over time at higher doses, became too much for me so I now stick with my maintenace dose. I just stir them into two ounces of 'tap hot' water and gulp it down like a shooter.

Here is the website I started with, and the next one is one of my favourite sites where I glean the bulk of my information:

CRAFTSFAN1: Thanks for reading...that saying is my FAVOURITE... it's kept me sane, and has kept me at this even though eliminating fat doesn't happen quickly for me. It's goverened everything from my food choices, to how/when I move, and no matter how long there is between drops on the scale, I don't gain. I think that saying is the key to maintenance... whether you're trying to maintain or not, LOL!

Probably. I probably started with too much in the first cup for a newbie. I had mixed the whole bottles of the 5 spices together well, then put a teaspoon of the mix in my water. I thought I was going to die with the first sip. And I didn't want to waste it, so I got a new cup of water and added from the original. I

I have actually finished my original cup ; )

i think I'll put 1/4 teaspoon in the next time. You all need to realize that when I make chili, there is no chili powder or cumin in it. I used to buy MILD salsa when I was eating processed food.

So with this tea, I picture my digestive system running for the hills.

I agree, Robert Marilyn. That's some spicy drink. I finally found the last of the spices I needed and made my first glass. I had to water it down 4 times, and wound up drinking about half last night, watered the leftovers down some more, and I still have some left. Not sure if it's going down the hatch tonight or tomorrow.

Other than waiting for my skin to improve, what can I expect in the short term? I assume it will get easier to drink???

Hi RAMONA, welcome to our team. We are working toward improving our eating habits by including more natural healing food. I think that this team offers a lot of information that is very adaptable to many other healthy programs.
By the way, I like your blogs very much. I took the following from one of them:

Hi _Ramona! We're not a Fuhrman team, though some of us follow it program to varying degrees. I started the team to get the word out about anti-angiogenic foods, what they are and what they can do for our health. All that is mainly based on a video I saw by Dr. William Li, and links to his video and the food list can be found in Awesome Resources further down the page.

Your spice tea sounds like it is full of anti-angiogenic ingredients!! And I've not tried it. So what were your interesting results when you drink it twice a day?

As for the heat you took for a couple of blogs, we're open to listening, thinking, and making up our own minds. I don't think anyone here would try something without making up their own mind about it first.

Join us in eating for health. Looking forward to your contributions.

Hi, everybody!

I've joined this team because I've LONG believed that disease can be addressed by how we eat... my own lifetime of chronic dis-ease is the perfect example... 'medicine' has let me down every time, but nutrition never has. I belive it's the cornerstone of all well-being, and can facilitate miracles.

I've had a recent antibiotic 'debacle'... they were necessary, but I'm paying a price for it (I'm the poster child for 'hyper sensitivity to environmental impact'). I am a natural health/remedy information junkie, and anything I can learn to encourage well-being naturally is a passion of mine (though, overall, I'm not a Dr. Joel Fuhrman fan).

My newly discovered (20 months) baseline approach for true wellness is an 'Ancestral/Paleo' nutritional plan, into which I draw information from other sources which further support my plan. I've also had some really interesting results with my spice tea (cumin, cinnamon, tumeric, cayene pepper, and ginger - 1/4 tsp each - in a small glass of hot water, twice a day).

I took some heat for two of my more recent blog entries, and I decided to go off and find some more like-minded people, so here I am!

I've decided to not think "never" and instead say "not now" or "not yet" when it comes to foods that give me trouble. That way I'm not setting myself up to fail with the "never" attitude. I would like to someday incorporate healthy chocolate in my menu since it is good for you.

Ok, I just may say never to things that still have their eyes. emoticon

I'm with you on eyes and slime.

But chocolate is on the AA list. ; ) I do well with unsweetened cocoa and cacao nibs. They don't send me over the edge. Just something to think about.

Good luck with the new SP program.

Oh, that's good to know. Maybe I'll be eating seaweed too then. emoticon I'm going to focus on adding the good things to my meal plan slowly. I'm starting the Spark Solution book Jumpstart on Monday, with others who just got the book. But I'm modifying recipes some since I don't want to add sugars, syrups, chocolate and ice cream cones. Hey, I can make entire binge excuse out of buying those things!

Instead I'll be using the list of good things to supplement the Spark menus. I'll take my time so I don't get overwhelmed but I'm excited to try some of these new things. Although when it comes to the seafood I don't want anything that still has eyes or is super slimey. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hey, I HAVE been eating Lundberg rice cakes, whose label says Tahini with Seaweed.
The ingredients say Nori is the seaweed. You can see dark green flakes on the rice cake. All that actually makes a very tasty rice cake, that DOESN'T taste like I'm eating cardboard!

SP has a recipe for Nori Chips, and I think that is what I had put on my list.

You know what a hard week this has been with the injury to my pet emu. That's why I will take this very slowly. I'm just going to try to get back to a normal eating schedule now that things have settled down. In a way, I think this is a great opportunity to slowing get back to eating right and better than before.

I am getting the Spark Solution book in the mail Tuesday and look forward to reading it. But I think, after hearing about the menus and food lists, that I already know that'd I'd rather incorporate this food plan rather than the Spark Solution food plan. I don't keep trigger foods in the house and I don't dabble in foods that I have trouble with, in regards to portion control. I know me and I know what is not good for me when it comes to avoiding the urge to binge.

I'll be watching the video today. Uh, at the moment, the idea of eating seaweed sound vomit inducing. emoticon I'll go slowly on introducing new things. And I don't even know what a Jackbean is but if you won't eat it, it must be interesting. This sounds like fun...ha ha

Thanks for the kind words. You have a good plan. Take it easy. See what you are already eating. Try to do more of that. Eventually, you'll find that you want to branch out and try some new things you hardly ever eat, or have never eaten.

Personally, I still haven't gotten up the courage to eat the seaweed or Jackbean. Luckily, I don't NEED to do that. Though seaweed is on my bucket list of things to try. ; )

I think the fruits and veg., herbs, nuts, and legumes on the list have a LOT of potential to prevent or to help remedy many ailments we are facing in the world today, especially if you eat them as close to the "whole" state as possible, and do all the processing yourself.

I'll be watching for your comments and sharing what you are learning and accomplishing on your journey to health.

Bravelute has been one of my cherished Spark friends and I've read her great advice in the past. I clicked on her link to this team after I read her advice to someone on another team. I'm going to take things slowly so as not to overwhelm myself all at once but I want to give this way of eating the best of chances. If it can help people who've had cancer and/or other health problems then I believe I can benefit from it even if I don't have those problems. I can get a step ahead of the game by eating healthy NOW!

Heck it fits in so well with what I'm trying to do anyway. Be a healthy weight, eat well, exercise, and take care of myself in all ways. Plus, I admire Bravelute and what she's been through and how she goes about her daily life. Glad to be here to learn and share!

I need to get back to eating my veggies and green drinks. By joining the team and posting this will be listed in "my recent posts" and will encourage me to eat more of the healthy foods. I have been very 'bahd' for a couple of months now. Hope I can get back into eating better.

Thanks for having this team . I hope I can say a little to support others.

Hi! My name is Sharon. I joined this SparkTeam because I want to learn more about how food impacts my health beyond weight. My DH's first wife died in her early 30's of colon cancer and I had a dear friend, Michele, who also was taken by progression of cancer from just a tiny spot of melanoma. I will never forget that Michele looked so healthy, so well the last time I saw her. I suppose I should have expected this, for she had called unexpectedly for a visit. We had a wonderful visit, laughed, hugged, and then the next day she was gone. It still brings me to tears as I realize that she looked well and content because she had made peace with her journey home. If I can only gain some bit of knowledge to help someone else prevent or beat cancer, it would give me great joy to do it in honor of Michele's memory.

I am selfishly joining this team to learn...I will read it all and then probably quietly slip away...I must limit my interactions or I end up sparking all day instead of living but have desire to learn learn learn so have come to read your info and thank you in advance....God bless you for your work to educate and be healthy.

Update 5/4/13 I have come to love and appreciate you and will stay and be very active on this team. Learning so much good stuff and wanting so much to be healthy. Eating anti-inflammatory was good intro to this and now will fine tune a blend of the two and my gluten free for celiac lifestyle and there is hope! Thanks for being here.

Update 10/15/13 I have victory in eating plan for the first time in my life...By always thinking of the AA foods foods and having them in good supply, I have succeeded in loosing weight without regaining ...slowly but steadily since February. Now down 25# and goal of 10 more by Christmas ...adding good-for-me spices has been a great help plus using portion control with these positive foods has been wonderful!

Actually, though time is relative, I'm expecting to improve my health for the next 40 years at least!! You're all invited to my 105th birthday party!! We'll have my famous grilled deconstructed caesar salad, and grilled salmon, and layered fruit salad cake. See you in 39 years, 5 months, 26 days . . .if the world is still in one piece.

Hi, I have been on this team about a week! This is day 7of: Eat to Defeat Fat & Cancer Cells for me. My name is Charlie and I'm 66 years old. I live and work on our small cattle ranch in TX. I have pictures of our Belted Galloway beef cattle on my page if you would like to see what the heck a Beltie looks like. We just had a new calf born this morning and pictures are up.

Hugs,
Charlie

I look forward to do it BRAVELUT. Right now, the only improvement is that I'm having every single day, no matter what, a green smoothie, 3:4 fruits:leafy greens. I only feel a little bit more energetic. But I only have been having them for 2 weeks. I hope that eventually I'll feel a lot better.

I started getting into whole food nutrition after watching some videos of naturopath Jeff Primack at Youtube. I bought two of his books. Although I don't agree with all his claims, I recognize that naturopathy helped me to start thinking of food as medicine.

Welcome Cindy. I know everyone cooks differently. If you check out the AA list it has alot to choose from, and at least for me, really most are things we already ate. I have begun exploring the ones I was unfamiliar with and adding them in. I love to cook and play around with recipes. The things I've tried so far have new "taste sensations" for us, very different, but we are really liking them. I would suggest you start out with what is most familiar to you already, add in more of that to your daily routine, read and learn as much as you can, and then start exploring. I haven't been here long, and am finding this to be a helpful team. Bravelute is very good about helping you explore if you have any questions. Check out the recipes to see what might work for you. You have so many issues, you may want to make sure of what you should and should not be eating/doing before you change too much. I assume the Dr's have given you lists or you could search online to learn all you can about your issues and illnesses. Be very careful. Let us know how you are doing and what you are learning.
Again, welcome.

Hi,

Cindy, I have a friend that is 43 with all of the issues you have plus she has IBS. I would like to here how this way of life is helping you as you try it. I feel strongly that we can change the out come of our health by what we eat and by moving our bodies.

I had stage 4 breast cancer over 20 years ago and have never been part of a support group for cancer. I was living in another state away from family and friends at the time. I did do what my Oncologist wanted me to do (chemo and radiation) but, I also ate as healthy as I knew how too. I have always been open to learning MORE!!!

Hugs,
Charlie

Hi I am here cos bravelute was gracious enough to see a reply on another page and suggest I check this out. I have severe arthritis in my spine, knees, ankles and I am thinking my thumbs. I also have herniation, degeneration of all my L section of my lower back and my L5-S1 is narrowing. So that seems to include sciatica which have had a few times but the past 2 summers have been extreme. Your title caught my eye and sounds like a very interesting topic.

Both parents died of Cancer, and my sister had pancreatic cancer. I haven't had time to
read all your information, but it looks so very informative.

Wow, I wish I had fruit. I do well to keep square foot gardening going for vegetables!!
Glad you joined. I also follow Dr. Fuhrman and put the anti-angiogenic foods in my favorites in the nutrition tracker. Then to plan the day, I start plugging in ETL items in that favorite list into each meal. Planning is done in no time, and I pretty much have the AA list memorized now.

We have threads where you can share your favorite combinations of AA foods.

Sometimes it's as simple as keeping some things like parsley or cinnamon, and just remembering to add them in to different dishes. I'm amazed at how many things I enjoy cinnamon in--even chili.

Hello, I just read Bravelute's recent blog which had the link to this team. I follow a plant-based diet (Dr Fuhrman, Eat to Live) and love the sound of the recipes in the blog.I live in New Zealand and at the moment am enjoying our own tomatoes, plums, apples etc.

Hi! I'm Liz, a 3rd generation foodie. I'm here to learn all I can to stay healthy because I haven't always done everything I could to maintain my health, but I'm on board now. My mom, 79 and a very healthy little ox, is my motivation. I need to stay strong for a very long time to come because she's gonna be here into the 100's, I'm certain of it.

She's the 2nd gen. foodie, of course. Wish I'd listened to my momma sooner.

I see so much pain in people my age (50's plus) and it is so obvious that food has gotten them into some of these bad predicaments -- apnea, obesity, diabetes, heart problems. It's so easy to give in and just eat all that tasty processed crap on the grocery store shelves.

We need to stay strong for each other....

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it!

OK, thanks. Your chicken suggestion sounds yummy. I make a lot of soups, etc. DH is happy (me too) especially in winter, they warm us up, and it's not so obvious that it has a small amount of meat, lots of veggies and beans, etc. He knows and doesn't mind. But if I set a plate with meat in front of him it will end up being LOTS of meat. I know I am bad that way too. So I've learned to cook accordingly. But I can adapt/adjust to meet my cooking style, that won't be a problem for me. I just need to gain the knowledge.

Sammie's Mom, yes, what you see is what you get. I have written them and asked if they have tested all foods like Dr. Li shows in the video, meaning that if it isn't on the list, then it is NOT anti-angiogenic. No reply. I think the list means that is all they know about at the present time, with the information available to us now.

But if you watch the food evidence page on the Eattodefeat.org website, that body if information is growing by leaps. I feel certain they will be adding more.

They are NOT saying to quit eating everything that isn't on their list. They would love it if everyone tried for an AA meal once a day.

What about dark meat chicken, roasted carrots,1/2 cup sweet potato with cinamon, roasted apple, and steamed broccoli? Sprinkle some pepper and lemon zest on the chicken and drink a cup of tea or coffee, and you score an 8.

I would think the same kind of thing could happen with venison. Not sure about the lemon zest there, but what about parsley?

I keep wanting them to discover some kind of grain that has anti-angiogenic qualities, but so far, the closest we get is the flax seed.

I do a lot with nuts and nut butters. Love plain almond or cashew butter. Don't care for walnut butter as yet, but I don't need to. Probably better for me just to eat plain walnuts. (hard to find nut butters without oil or sugar added, even at the health food store.)

Dakota, after you have a chance to look at the AA list and incorporate, or just assess your program, could you share here how the AA list fits in with Engine 2 or McDougall?

I don't know what is involved with those 2 and I keep writing that the AA list could be valuable to any food plan.

Keep me honest. ; )

Question about the full list... I only see a couple of bean types there (ie:lima, lentil, tofu). Are not navy, kidney, pinto, etc. included? Also, similarly are only the mushrooms on the list included?
We eat very little seafood. Too expensive, and I don't care much for fish, altho I love shrimp, crab, etc. My DH hunts so we eat mainly venison, as well as chicken (yay, I LOVE dark meat.) Those are our main stays. But it is minimal in our meals, we've cut back alot on meat.

For the anti-angiogenic aspect, the list includes foods from not only fruits and veggies, but also fish, shellfish, meat, sweets, and more.

Some of the members here are vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores with all kinds of combinations. I'm following Dr. Fuhrman's ETL and just started adding back in foods. I haven't missed the meat too much, but I have missed grains a LOT. So I usually add meat (I've been wanting chicken. So I usually pick a roasted chicken thigh) once a week now, and a grain the rest of the week. I think next week salmon is going to win. I'll need to take mom out to lunch, and I know a place with killer salmon!!

Not sure what I'll do with the vegan/vegetarian, lifestyle aspect once I've lost the rest of the weight I need to lose. Because weight isn't the only issue for me.

Also, most of us start out by printing the full food list after watching the video.
Some post it in a kitchen cabinet. Others print it on the back of their grocery /menu planning list. For me, I highlight the items on the list that I buy at the store, and then use those in planning.

I really think the AA list is broad enough for anyone to include several choices into their menus and still follow the lifestyle or diet plan they want. The resources on their websites certainly give us a lot of information I never knew.

Thanks Bravelute, I can remember some things! LOL. But continuing recipe posts from anyone/everyone will be viewed with interest by me. emoticon
Making us spaghetti tonight, using the squash rather than pasta. I added some veggies I wouldn't usually do and also mushrooms. We are having a nice BIG salad with raw mushrooms, peppers, carrots, toms and fresh strawberries for dessert. I don't want to go vegan or vegetarian, and my DH would rebel, but just making changes should still be very good for us. Hoping that is ok that I'm not quite as "dedicated" as you guys, just wanting to learn and be able to make healthy changes that are good in more ways than just weight loss.

Dakota, Welcome to the team. Let me know if I can help. Eat to Live (Dr. Fuhrman, also a SP team) is very helpful for diabetes control. And since you have already made the vegan decision, it would possibly help you do that, too.

You would esentially follow his 6 week plan. (no dairy, no meat, no grains (I think), no sweeteners. You eat a minimum of pound of raw veggies, a pound of cooked veggies, and 4 fruits; and a cup of legumes, an ounce of nuts, and a T ground flaxseed.

Then after the 6 weeks, he allows you to add in things that aren't on the original 6 week plan, up to 10% of your daily calories. I'm doing this now and usually add in a serving of grain.

But I put in anti-angiogenic choices for the rest as my first choices as I plan my menus. I still eat other fruits and veggies that aren't on the list like pineapple, banana, asparagus, and probably some more, but those appear regularly in my meals.

Sammies Mom, we're not real formal around here. It's okay if a recipe winds up here, except as you say, finding it later.

I can copy by grain ideas and put them in recipes if you want.

Thank you Bravelute. I make alot of soups as my DH is on the road alot and we can freeze them and send them. I make nearly all the food he takes, rather than him eating out, he is a healthy looking truck driver. LOL. I will now be sending him more veggies, etc. I did send, just will send more now. He seems amenable to all my "changes", which as I said will really just be building on what I've been doing. So it won't really be a big deal for him/us.
I am afraid I am a bit limited as to purchasing, but I think what I can find at the local stores will do us fine, at least at this point. Long story, but I have to take DH with me shopping, and he hates to shop so we won't be going to specialty type places! LOL. Altho I may go to a co-op now and then that I know of, which is south of the cities.
At any rate, I am looking forward to learning more. I've always been interested in this sort of thing, used to send my daughters bag lunches to school as I didn't find them all that "nutritious" and did alot of studying on my own to learn about complete proteins, etc. So they didn't get p-nut butter sandwiches, they got them with powdered milk added, tho they didn't know that at the time, etc. But they were told eventually, and now they also are very aware of their children's nutrition. emoticon

Perhaps we could have a special posting area for recipes? I will lose them if they get too far down. Won't remember where they are.

Quinoa is a cool little seed that pops open like a spiral spring when you cook in water or broth, etc. It is rather new to me, but like most grains has a kind of neutral taste.

For rices, try a health food store. I love Lundberg Christmas rice, red weihani, golden rose brown, and black japonica. Black japonica has less carb and more protein than most rices, and also less calories. I think it's taste takes some getting used to.

I also like to fix barley and oat groats (oats not smashed, etc. just the whole seed)

For just me, I pick 1 grain and bake 1 cup at a time in a flat baking dish. 1 cup of grain, 2 cups water. Cover the baking pan. Bake at 350 1 hour. Then it is easy to divide into 4 equal servings, and store in plastic containers, ready for whatever I want to fix.

I love rice/grape/celery/yogurt salad with walnuts on top. For each serving: 1 serving rice, grapes cut in half, 1/4 c. diced celery, 1/2 c. nonfat greek yogurt, cinnamon and nutmeg, and sweetener of your choice.

I also like to bake any grain with dried craisins or cherries, unsweetened coconut, and almonds. Delicious! Especially with that Lundberg golden rose brown rice. I put into individual casseroles and serve with seamed and roasted veggies. It was my Thanksgiving substitute for stuffing, and I didn't feel deprived at all.

i have little tasting parties with new grains. I eat it plain and think about what I might like to have with it--savory or cinnamony, vegetables or fruit, tomato sauce or nutty sauce, with onions or garlic, or a combination. Then I try one of my thoughts the next time.

Anything you have done with rice or cereal can be done with any of the grains. They can be cooked in any thin liquid: water, milk, vegetable or fruit juice. Bake in pineapple or orange juice if you are going to make a tropical salad. Bake in tomato or vegetable juice if you are going to make a casserole or soup.

OK, I was visiting my daughter so just got home. I am not really sure WHAT I want to do! LOL. I just have alot to learn. I guess I am looking for "how" to incorporate more with how I cook now, "what" has true whole grains (I've heard some breads that say "whole grains" really aren't what you think they are), etc. I also need to learn "what" some of these "new fangled" grains are and how to cook them, I can look them up, but any recipes you guys have found that are good would be much appreciated.
I and DH went grocery shopping and I got some brown rice to add to my white rice, and some pearl barley, which I hadn't seen in the dried bean aisle previously- think it new to them, it was always in a small box (I love to add it to my soups), now it's in a bag like dried beans and cheaper. YAY! I also bought some quinoa. I have NO idea what it is or how to use it but it sounds great so I am determined to learn. emoticon My daughters are also interested, so maybe 3 of us will be learning thru "me" this way, and their families and my DH will also be getting the benefits of it so it will be worthwhile for me to learn more. I want to not only lose weight but be doing it in a healthy way. Hope that answers your question!

My sister gave me the equivalent of a huge basket from Trader Joe's. Mainly nuts and grains. I chose the flaxseed roasted with blueberries first, sprinkling it on top of my breakfast fruit daily. Well that was gone today, so I started looking at the other things. I used the bag with 1.5 cups of barley for soup today. Barley, no sodium veggie broth, leftover cabbage and onion, edamame, onion, mushrooms, spinach and miso broth. They all went in the crockpot and came out as a stew. (The package said to use 8 cups of broth for soup. I used a total of 6 cups so it was thicker.

So now I have 7 cups, well 6 are left. That should be lunch and dinner for the next 3 days till I leave. I wonder if it would freeze?

I'm always delighted when I put so many AA foods together into some concoction and it comes out tasting so good. Low on calories, too.

When I get back to Florida, I'm going to do something with the farro. That's a new one on me. I've had barley in the past, usually with beef back then. Never farro.

Are you asking for suggestions for whole grains?

If so, are you trying to replace white bread, or add whole grains to things you already fix, or . . . ?

Thanks, I still have alot to learn, so will be "lurking" as I can find time reading. I already try and eat a fair amount of veggies, and fruits. We've cut way back on meat a long time ago, just because of cost and knowing too much isn't good. I "hide" that it's small amounts in soups, casseroles, etc. so hubby, tho he knows, stays happy. But I am still far off track when I look at the Full Plate. Part of it is we don't get enough whole grains and I'm not quite sure about those as far as "what", other than brown rice and oats. So will be doing/reading that first.

So glad you're here!! I think you know I'm combining all three: AA, Full Plate, and Eat to Live. Once I learned about Eat to Live, I didn't have to worry about the fiber tracking because that is always off the charts.

So all I do now is plan my ETL meals around items on the AA list. I feel better than I have in a long time. and the weight just keeps coming off. I get a little nervous during the 2-3 week periods when the scale is at a standstill. But the size of everything goes down then.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I've been contemplating this team for awhile but wanted to learn more about the Full Plate Diet first. Finally found the time to do that, at least a start. Love it. It is just a higher level of what helped me lose last time, and as soon as I quit watching/changing to that better way of eating I began slowly gaining it back. I have a hard time doing much exercise, I can do some, but not long or much. Bad back/leg issues. But just changing my diet made the difference and I was NEVER hungry, infact felt full. What a GREAT way to lose. So I intend to add this to my challenge behaviour that I've been doing. DH is also amenable. Neither of us needs to lose alot, just those extra 10-15 lbs. He's a truck driver so he has a hard time getting exercise as well. But he's at least a THIN truck driver! LOL. I send him most of his food so that make a BIG difference.

Thanks Bravelute. Your harp is what lead me to this forum. :)

Hi! My Name is Barbara and I have joined this team to see if eating better will help with my hypoglycemia. I also joined the team of FlyLady and got the ides of this team from BRAVELUTE. The message I wrote for other teams follows.

Hi everyone! Just joined because I need motivation bad. I am in a wheelchair most of the time now because of a broken back. I also have hypoglycemia. Which for me is real hard to control. Even after 10 years of little by little getting worse and hot being able to walk. I still get upset at myself when I can't do what I want to do and I take it out by not doing any exercises for arm strength and feeling like I give up. Just need motivation to stick with this way of life. I don't leave many messages very much because I can't type and can't spell very well but I do read them. Sticking to some type of plan and having someone give me motivation would be great. Maybe if I had a buddy who would mail me would help. Once again hi and thank you for reading this long message.

"There is no such thing as low hopes! Dream Big and just see what the world has in store for you! Your routines allow you the pleasure of Dreaming Big without feeling guilty!" by FlyLady

Katie, I feel strongly that the mechanism that sparked angiogenesis to feed my tumor and my fat cells is now being thwarted by all the AA foods I'm eating. And for once, the "box" is changing back into human form.

Hope it works for you as well!!

Hello Everyone. My name is Katie, I'm 62, married and mom to Kricia and Daniel. I'm also a grandmother, through my step-daughter, to six year old twins. I love to draw and paint, garden, explore the beautiful outdoors, and photography. I'm currently writing an historical fiction (my first) on colonial Florida and the first homesteaders.

My reason for joining this wonderful group is to stay motivated toward my goals, which I'm taking in baby steps so not to overwhelm myself, which sets ones self for failure. Twelve years ago I had two types of breast cancer, which I believed was the result of four straight years of stress, bad eating habits, and no exercise. This is a story unto itself.

After two operations and the traditional treatments, chemotherapy and radiation, it threw me into full-blown menopause, more bad eating habits, and a 55 lb. weight gain.

New aches and pains, low stamina, low energy, and a body that has taken on the shape of a well-constructed box is enough reason to stop abusing myself. Not to mention that I constantly "catch" my image in full-length mirrors in work (I'm a merchandiser for Macy's), which makes me want to gouge my eyes out emoticon .

My daughter is a state-certified fitness trainer in NYC during the evenings and weekends after her real daytime job. There was a six-month lapse since our prior visit when I promised her that I would "change my ways." Easier said than done! During Thanksgiving week she watched me not exercise but eat, taking mental notes. My son, who lives near me in Sarasota, FL, and is a vegetarian, stood by silently (which is not good either). Oh, how the tables have turned since they've grown ....

My lovely adult children gave me a "love lecture" before the week was over, which sparked my brain cells into gear.

My greatest fear is having recurring cancer and I know I've been feeding into it with my diet of rich Italian food, which I was brought up on. So no more excuses. Katie

Hi, I am from Kentucky. I joined this team because I am a BC survivor of
two years. I had bilateral mastectomies. Since my cancer was hormonal
related, I know that I can get the same cancer back in several different
parts of my body. Last week, I had to get a pet scan, because my cancer
margin was high. That is always a fear, every time we see our oncologist.

I am very interested in learning anything that could help in keeping me
cancer free. I am 72.

Greetings from Kentucky. I like the purpose of this team and have been looking for one to cover all my problems in one place. I'm a ten year breast cancer survivor, and cancer does run in my family. Both myself and husband have CAD with hubby also having COPD. both hubby and I are well over 65 and retired. Our main purpose now is to continue to enjoy retirement and family activities. Have been a member of Spark since March of 2011 and have reached my weight goal an now need to maintain that goal and continue to improve on our health issues.

I am 62, married, with one grown son, himself married with a small daughter. My husband and I have been retired for 2 years. I have been on Spark since Oct. 2011. I lost my right breast to cancer 8 years ago and do not want it to recur. I know that obesity contributed to activating cancer in my body, as it has to aggravating rheumatic disease, osteoarthritis and other medical woes that have plagued me. I want to do all I can to reduce or eliminate the obesity and lessen my chances of cancer recurrance. My husband also has health issues that mandate considerable weight loss, tho he is not currently cooperating with that idea. I would like to learn as much as I can to help us both toward better health, since I am chief cook in our house.

Hi, I'm Sue.
I do play at the harp and would like to be a fierce electric harpist in my next life. I have a blog somewhere about that with links to harpists I'd like to be able to play like.

I am here because I have had colo-rectal cancer twice since 11/2007 with all the surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy until 11/2011. When I stopped maintenance chemotherapy 11/2011, I started to fix what I thought were the long term effects of 4 years of chemotherapy. And I started to search for a prevention because they say a third round will spray my liver or lungs.

In February, 2012, I happened upon the Ted Talks site after a search for cancer prevention. I found a video done by Dr. Wiliam Li. I've watched it over and over.
It presented at least a double whammy of information for me. I found a possible solution for my cancer problem, and also my weight problem.

Dr. Li says cancer cells AND our fat cells are angiogenic, and anti-angiogenic foods can reduce the out-of-whack blood supply our bodies create to feed those cells.

I looked at the full food list and discovered I liked a lot of the foods so I started making a concentrated effort to add anti-angiogenic foods into my diet.

In July I started back at Spark People. I track all of my meals, and tally the anti-angiogenic foods daily. Since July, I've lost 30 pounds. I have had three PET scans since I stopped chemotherapy, and all three have been stellar.

I decided that this might be something other sparkers might be interested in trying, whether they have stubborn pounds to lose, or wish to prevent cancer. So, this team.

I hope you'll check out Dr. Li's video, and start adding AA foods into your diet.
