Thanks Rosie. I didn't realize I had it set that way. I will have to see if I can figure out how to change that. Great call. Appreciated!

Molly, Your Spark Page is not public . . . that's totally ok - I had mine set to private for a while too. But when I finally set it to "public", I started receiving encouraging messages and "goodies". I thought they were silly at first too . . . but then I started receiving fun little goodies from people I didn't even know and it has been very motivating and encouraging.

I hope you find some good buddies here. It really does help. emoticon

Corrolla, I don't get them either. I think it's just a motivational tool for those for whom that type of thing works. Same with the trophy awards. It's kind of silly. But I think the goal is to find as many ways and reasons to keep various types of people engaged so they keep coming and logging fitness and meals. Logging is about the only way most of us really can maintain adequate awareness of our dietary adventures. It's too easy to stray otherwise.

I know logging helps me lower fat intake (which is usually too high if I don't remain mindful) and up my protein intake (which is usually too low if I don't remain mindful).

So far I've gotten on daily and kept track of everything and I guess it's going fairly swimmingly now since I've lost my first five pounds as of today. But I also have wanted to connect with people and haven't found that to work yet. The "teams" help a little to narrow down the giant field of fellow dieters out there but I really want three, four, five really close pals on here to message back and forth and get to know and share fitness journeys and encourage one another. That would work better for me than these teams of thousands, the many members of which I can never get to know on a level I want to.

I am signing in but I don't really get all of these virtual goodies. Like, for ex, I earned some Sparkgoodies, but have no idea what they are or what to do with them. Maybe someone can explain this to me. I try to spend at least a half hour a day doing the quizzes, reading an article or two, watching a video, plus I am tracking all food and exercise (probably a new record for me--writing down food for two weeks straight!), so i feel like I am making good use of SparkPeople. Just not sure how the goodies work. Well, that's my first question, at any rate. I have more!

emoticon Hello everyone, My name is Fran. I am a 44 year old mother of 5, grandmother of 5. I have battled my weight (and lost) for the better part of 24 years, I also smoked for the last 27.

I decided this year that was going to change and bought a weight system and treadmill with our income tax return. It was very disheartening to get on the treadmill and after a few seconds I was huffing and puffing. I don't think I even made it a minute before I got down.

I got to the point I couldn't catch my breath even when sitting. I was sleeping on the couch, because I was up and down all night going to the restroom, and I couldn't breath laying down.

I finally decided to go to the doctor (stubborn me, I hate going to the doc) and we discovered that I now have Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). She sent directly to the hospital, where I spent the next 4 days flushing fluids. I lost over 20 lbs in water weight.

That was almost 1 month ago. My last cigarette was on April 4, 2013 (the day I went to the hospital). My sister sent me the spark page link and nudged me into joining. And here I am.

Hi I'm Cristen. My goal is to lose 50 lbs. I was diagnosed with fatty liver last month and the doctor said its pretty bad. I was told if i don't lose weight it could turn to cirrhosis. I have never really tried to lose weight before. I just assumed that after 6 kids and being diagnosed with diabetes I was doomed to end up this way. I also have rheumatoid arthritis and have a hard time exercising. But you know what? I am done making excuses about why I can't be active and take care of myself! I am so happy to have found sparpeople and to be a part of this community!

Hi, Kate! I gave up dieting and lost 100#! This time, instead of dieting, I changed my lifestyle. Monday-Friday I am at the gym at 5am before work. Saturday and Sunday are my 'down' days, but I try to get extra steps in, anyway. Let me know how I can help you to reach your goal.

Hello fellow SPeeps,

I'm 50, mother of 2 in their late teens, teacher with a 2-3 hour daily commute. I live in an alpine region of Europe and I love walking outdoors and swimming in lakes in the summer.

I've been using SP on and off for years now, getting weight off successfully only to see it gradually pile back on again, each time to a higher level. This time I reached an all time high of 90 kgs and a corresponding all time low in terms of fitness, self-respect, self-perception and self-confidence not to mention health (back pain, high cholesterol). I was even more despondent this time as my life seems to have been one continuous study in weight loss / weight gain and I am wondering if I will ever be able to achieve stability at a healthy weight. Now there is an additional factor in that I'm experiencing menopause and am trying to figure out the effects this is having on my body, metabolism, emotions etc.

As always, I am finding that once I'm tracking exercise, nutrition and other goals regularly I feel so much better and in control - the awareness that I am actually DOING something to take matters into hand gives me a boost. I truly hope this will be the last time I diet.

Welcome, Becky! One question to ask yourself when faced with the stress eating, "How much did it help your stress level"?

Now, let's do it! Do not expect perfection, but steps toward success. emoticon

Hello all, my name is Becky. I thought I would join SP in hopes of achieving some goals. I am currently 75+ pounds over weight due hurting my back a few years ago. Then I currently had lost 40 lbs only to blow out my knee and will be having surgery Monday . Stress eating and not being able to exercise has caused my weight to start creep up again. I need help/ support. Hope I can get that here. Sorry to vent

My name is Amanda. I am 37 years old. This is not the first time I have used SP. I have been a member, but have "fallen off the wagon". I need to start over and think about my goals and what I really want. I need and want to lose weight and will not let anything stop me. I have made so many excuses and have gotten really lazy. Growing up I was not overweight. In fact I was really active. I think it was about 10 years ago when I stopped working out and I let myself go. I did rejoin a gym last year, but had to cancel for financial reasons. I am a wife, full time worker, part-time student, and "mother" of 3 dogs! There is so much I want in life that I have to refocus and become determined again. I/WE can do this!

Hello, Erika and Pam!

Erika, it sounds like you have done a lot of preliminary work. Have you joined one of the C25k Sparkteams, yet?

Pam, Welcome to my world! I don't know how your job is structured, but I, too, have a sedentary job. I started using a stability ball in place of my desk chair about a month ago. Though it doesn't feel like much, it is quite the core workout! It helps to develop better bealance and flexibility and is especially good for those -ahem- our age.

Both of you, let Rosy or I know if we can help you with anything, ok? And if you haven't made your Sparkpage, yet, and done your first blog, I strongly encourage it.

Hello! I'm Erika, and I'm 25 - quickly approaching 26! - and living in Chicago (originally from Michigan). I'm currently looking for a full-time, permanent job teaching social studies (this year's job: only temporary, alas) at an area middle school or high school. In the meantime, I've reassessed my lifestyle and realized that it's really only serving to make me kind of miserable. Last semester I did this thing where I never brought a lunch to work and ended up in the drive-thru at McDonald's on my way home every other day; that was a bad thing. The year before, I did a thing where I also never brought a lunch to work, and my boyfriend made me eggs for "lunch" at about 3pm, which was a slightly less bad thing. Junk food was a staple in our home. Recently, though, I've discovered some healthy things that I actually LIKE, and, you know, it's not that hard to give up the things that make me feel gross when I've got plenty of healthy and satisfying food around instead. Well, at least, it's not that hard for now. We'll see how long I can stay motivated. (Sidebar: is it WAY easier for other people to eat well/stay active in the spring/summer/early fall? I think in the winter I just want to load up on warm, fatty stuff in order to insulate my body from the cold.)

I'm also not as active as I'd like to be: I miss sports, and I miss feeling (physically) strong and athletic. A couple of years ago I accidentally ran a 5k and finished ~25th out of 100, and the whole thing was so surprisingly invigorating and such a blast that I'd really love to do it again. And I always thought I hated distance running! I'm trying out the Couch to 5K program...day one was pretty much a breeze, but I expect some of the later weeks to get tougher. Maybe I'll be able to drag my boyfriend out to play some tennis as the weather really starts to get nicer! :)

Anyway, hello to everyone - I'm looking forward to getting involved here on SP! :)

Hello, My name is Pam. I have been losing and gaining weight since my senior year in high school. I was always good at taking the weight off. Just not good at keeping it off. I have been dieting for so long that it is hard for me a lot of weight. Last time I tried to lose weight, I lost 50 lbs and I hit a plateau. I kept trying but I couldn't get any lower. I had joined a gym and loved working out. I went 5-7 times a week. I was tightening and building muscle but it didn't help with the weight loss. Then I started having more health problems. I am just starting to be able to workout. But, where I have gained 40 lbs. back, I'm embarrassed to go back to the gym. Hopefully after a few weeks of dieting and walking I will get up the courage to go back to the gym.

I am glad I found SP. It helps to know that others are going thru the same things as I am. I look forward to meeting new people and to be able help encourage them. And, to receive encouragement from them. I have at least 100 lbs to lose. I am realistic. I didn't put it on overnight and I certainly won't be able to take it off overnight either.

Hi, team!

I'm Mariah and I'm a Freshmen in college. I came to college weighing 145 Ibs, but the semester is almost over and I tip the scale at 170 Ibs. I'm planning on losing 35 bounds, mostly in my abdominal, love handles, and back. However, I'm starting work at Cedar Point this summer and I truly do not know if I will be able to manage to pull of the weight. I'm also about to try this workout program called INSANITY. Wish me all the best! Thanks. :)

Hi there, I am new to this site and have decided to lose weight and get back into shape.
I am a mother of 2 ( a 16 y/o son and 14 y/o daughter) My daughter is presently being treated for having seizures, and my son is presently being tested for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I work F/T and in the process of hopefully taking online classes through CSUSM.
I have alot of stress in my life, which has caused me to turn to food. Very bad, bad, I know. I am tired of not fitting into my clothes or they have become tight. I must really stay focus, I know I can do this. No matter how hard the struggle will be, I'm tired of this weight.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. the most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. Thomas A. Edison

Welcome to all the new people! I am trying to stay on top of wach post, but it is getting overwhelming!

The bottom line with any weightloss program is defining why you want to lose, planning how to lose, monitoring your plan (measure and track) and re-evaluating periodically. emoticon

I'm not new to SparkPeople but it's been a long time since I made any forward strides. So, I deleted my old account (from 2008!) and am starting anew. I have a few friends at work who may join me in this, I'm hoping they will. Anyway, I know how well the spark team motivated me back in 2008. I need the push to get this done once and for all. I have my Son's wedding coming up in November so I do have a goal date. Now to get with the program and get on the right track again. Hope to make some new Spark buddies to share the motivation!
I need to loose (ugh.. hard to admit) but nearly 100lbs would put me around the right weight for me to be. emoticon

Hi, I'm not new but I'm recommitting as of today. There is a group of about 10 women at work that are doing WW but I'm now meeting with them for the group motivation (even though I am not doing WW).

I started with journey with 80 to lose. I cut that in half after about 18 months but I've regained a bunch and need to get back on the band wagon. I told one of the women in the group that she can announce my weight at next Monday's meeting if I eat any candy between now and next Monday. If that's not motivation to change my habit as of right now I don't know what is.

A bit about myself. I'm a late in life mom to two beautiful kiddos, now 10 and 11. I work more than full time, and have a great husband. And I have more than 50 lbs to lose.

If you are in the same boat I'm looking for a couple of people to connect with.

ML in CA

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

As co-leader of this team, I want to congratulate you on taking the first step to health! emoticon Yay, you! AlwaysRosy and I co-lead, but she is away for a few days, so you won't be hearing from her for a bit.

My name is Jaynee and I started Sparkpeople (commonly referred to around here as SP) for the 3rd time on July 27th last year. I finally have it right! I am just under 5# from my goal weight and feeling great! You can read more about my journey on my Sparkpage....speaking of which...

I am so pleased to see that ALL of you have created your Sparkpages! I encourage you to blog as often as possible, whether about your successes, your trials or something totally different. We get to know each other better and can encourage eachother easier. Additionally, blogging your successes and failures helps YOU. When having a difficult time you can review what you are doing and reassess it. Furthermore, seeing your successes helps get you through those dreadful plateaus!

We are here to answer questions, encourage and help you to achieve your goals. Be sure to contact us whenever you need to!

Hi new to the Sparkpeople site. I am excited to make new friends with similar interests. I live in El Paso, TX. I have started my own Spark page, Fort Bliss Sleevers Club. Feel free to look it up. I am having gastric sleeve surgery in May of this year. I am a wife of an Army Soldier for 20 years now. I have three children and I also have three furry friends that are more my children then my kids as since they are all grown up.

When all else fails......just dance

Hello!
I'm a former Sparker who deactivated, for a reason I can't remember, but I rejoined this morning. I turn 60 in September an want to lose 33 pounds before then and be healthy and have a joyful birthday. I'm excited about this new adventure . . . one I've attempted a million times. LOLOLOL But I can do this!

For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:36

Just started today and wanted to say hello!

One definition of insanity is: Doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

Do you choose to simply know the path, or do you choose to walk it?

How cool, Carol, that you are leading your emoticon anniversary team!

I am Jaynee and this week marks 9 months for me emoticon . I have lost weight on every 'diet' that I have been on and I have been on them all!
Atkins? Check! (40#)
Weight Watchers? Check! (160#)
Diet Watchers? Yep!
All Liquid diet? Yeah.
Calorie counting? Grapefruit? Fasting? Yes, yes, yes!

It is different this time. I have listened to my body and followed its guidance. God has installed a message system in these bodies, but we have learned to ignore it. Time to get tuned in!

You can do this, too! All the tools and support group you need is here. Someone will be here 24 hours/day, 7 days/week whenever you need help. Explore the message boards and become familiar with the threads, especially the Panic button for emergencies.

Check out the Sparkteams to find others with the same interests or same challenges that you have. Create your Sparkpage so that others can celebrate your successes and can encourage you personally. Join some team goals.

Most of all. Find what works for you, but understand that you can not continue dong the same things that you have always done and expect different results. You MUST change your habits. You WILL be outside of your comfort zone at times. You CAN succeed and Carol and I are here to help.

When you have questions, ask them. emoticon

Hello new Spark members!!!!

I want to extend a big WELCOME emoticon and wish you the best experience here at Sparks!!!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Carol. I will be here for one year on April 17, 2013. emoticon I've received a lot of encouragement and motivation here at Sparks and I hope you have a great experience too.

Favorite little phrase I repeat to myself frequently is:

emoticon "Don't give up what you want MOST for what you want now". emoticon

Saw it on another Sparker's page. It just speaks to me!

Hot tea and blessings! emoticon
Carol
