Hi, I'm Beth. I'm just getting back to Spark-ing after too long away. I've set my sights and my heart on a lofty goal and not achieving it is not an option. My goal: to finally earn a Disney Coast 2 Coast medal in 2017. I'm registered for the Princess HM (WDW/Feb) and will register in Sept to run the Tinkerbell HM (DL/May). I've completed 8 other DISNEY World races over the past 8 years but have been "out of the game" for the last 2 years caring for my mom. So basically I'm back to couch spud level again. I'm not a runner. Never have been. But I plan to follow the Jeff Galloway run/walk training so that I can finish the Princess in 3 hours (which will better my usual walking only finish by 30 minutes). Then, I hope to have a sub 3 hour finish at the Tinkerbell. Sorry to give such a long introduction. I figure if I don't share my goals from the get go, I'm less likely to stay accountable. I invite any and all team members to give me a virtual kick in the spud to keep me focused should it seem as though the couch cushions are reclaiming my attention. 😊

All that you have lived through, makes you the beautiful, complex, interesting, strong individual that you are.

I am Misty Pullen and I am training for a walking half marathon. I have walked several 5k's so I know that I can do them easily (their to easy for me which means I need to do the 10k's if the city I'm in now has them. I am going from couch potato to marathoner so i'm going to take 3 full winters before I actually do one.

Thanks for the tip, PLMITCH. I wanted to do one or two 5Ks before, but the half marathon registration is so expensive that I don't think I can afford multiple races. I'm doing the half with a big team, though, and everyone is training together, so I have some good support!

Will this half be your first ever competitive running event? If so, make sure to schedule in a few 5K's before your half so you have a feel for race day. If you've run races before, disregard and best of luck to you!

Hello! I have never been a runner - always preferred walking. However, I'm trying to shift pounds and running seems to work! I'm working toward a half marathon to scare myself into training consistently. My half is in February and I am 5 weeks into training. Glad to meet you!

Hi! I am new to the team!

I run, I'm slow, and lack proper long distance training skills. I am working on building a better foundation so I can run my next HM under 3 hours LOL

I am happy to be here, and looking forward to chatting!

Hi! I started back running two years ago. I was on a several year hiatus due to a complicated pregnancy and then a bad injury. I have run a 5k and 10k in the last year and would like to do a half marathon and a 15k in the next couple of months. In the past I have followed the Galloway method for running. This time around I haven't figured out if I am going to run-walk or straight run. Trying to figure out which way my body likes best so I can keep the injuries at bay.

I look forward to being a part, and learning a lot, from this group.

Hi SEAJESS,

I can't speak with any expertise on gliders so I'll let others comment. As far as run/walk, I do EVERYTHING run walk, even my speed training. The only difference is that I go for longer run distance / time on the run interval, but also take a nice walk interval to let me legs recover (my typical speed training scenario is 0.25 mile fast run and a 2 minute walk break).

The key for me was building up the mileage on the long runs. Two weeks before my HM I hit the 15 mile mark, which still stands as my all time long run.

Hope those little tidbits help. Feel free to PM me with any other specific questions.

emoticon Thank you so much for welcoming me, Patrick!

I will take all the help I can get. Since it's been two years since I ran at all (I started again mid-June this year), I'll be aiming just to finish, not to make a time. Congrats on your highly respectable 2:20:00 first!

On time trials, do you run them run/walk? Or are you supposed to straight run the whole mile? Also, any advice on gliders? I feel as if I get gliding when I'm going down hill, but not on the flats.

Thank you again for the help! I will need every bit when I get up at oh-dark-thirty on October 10th to run my first (return to running) half.

Hi Jess, welcome!

I ran my first HM last March. My training guide was the Jeff Galloway "Galloway's Book On Running" and it was VERY helpful. I was aiming for a 2:20:00 HM time, and missed it by 1 minute!

Happy to share any other info you'd like about my training, etc., but did not want to overwhelm you.

Hi, I'm Jess. I signed up for a half marathon in October. I may be pushing the limits of training so I thought some support wouldn't hurt.

I have share three cats with my "it's complicated" relationship husband. I'm midway through a late life career change so I am the world's oldest nursing student.

Any and all tips about training, nutrition, anything about half marathons is greatly appreciated!

Hi, I am Sharon and not new to the team. I joined 2012 and drifted some. I was hoping to get back to Half Marathon Training back then and it did not happen until last year after a few years off. So excited to say last September I did my first Half since moving from FL to NC in 2010. So far this year I have done 3 in 63 days and now am a Half Fanatic. That was my driving force. I met so many people from this National Running Group and with all the years running, never would have pushed myself like that. But, I did and last Saturday was my Third Half..
I have been recovering this week and hope to start running again next week. My next Half is in September and also thinking of one in November..

I started running 25 years ago after my son was born and just have the love for it. I am now 60 years old and hope I keep on running. A little easier now placing at my age..

I am looking forward in getting to know you all..

Hi my name is Lisa and I have just recently re-started running regularly. I have been an off and on runner and over the years have done the odd race as well as Bloomsday 12K several times. I was able to complete a 1/2 in June of 2012 (it wasn't pretty but I finished haha). I am using the Galloway method which incorporates intervals of walking. Since I'm prone to shin splints and not in the best shape this is really helping me train and I feel I am getting stronger and faster each week. My first goal is a 5K then 10K (that won't be long off I'm sure) and eventually another 1/2. I live in SW Idaho (suburbs of Boise) and live with my husband, two sons and and doodle dog Peaches. Hope you are all doing well.

Howdy. New member. Goal is to do a half this summer. Longest distance ran is 8 miles. Fastest mile is 9.20. Would like to get to that for an average.....which is closer to 11 minutes. Also trying to lose 50 pounds. Looking forward to being apart of the group!

Hi everyone! Joined the team because eventually I'd love to run a half marathon and one day maybe the whole thing! Currently I'm training for a 10K and am at the 4-5 mile mark. As my ticker below will tell you I started my journey at 276 lbs. Starting out I ran for about 60 seconds at a time and finished the 5K training program on Thanksgiving. Since starting I've become much more comfortable running and am really starting to love it. My current plan is to finish out the 10k training and then stay in the 5-6 mile range until I lose some more weight. I'm afraid that with my heavier weight I need to wait until I'm out of the 200's at least before I try to start training for a 1/2 marathon. Glad to be a part of the team!

Hey everyone! My name is Nataly! I am a Florida girl living in Virginia Beach. I am currently on a lifestyle change and really want to pursue my dream of running a marathon one day. I would love to be able to run half a marathon by year's end!Having this said, I am a beginner, as far as running goes. So I am hoping to be able to learn how to be a proper runner this year and would love all the guidance and advice that I can get! So excited what this year has in store!

Joined this group last week to help me get geared up for a Half Marathon this year. ANP hosts one near my home town in June that I am going to try to train for. My last two attempts at running a HM were successful but disappointing as I did not finish very strong in either one. So I really want to overwrite that running experience with something better. And of course I am hoping that the extra miles will help take some of the pounds off and get me eating cleaner. I look forward to chatting with you all.

Hi Amy, welcome, and what part of Iowa are you from? I was born in Ottumwa, now live in Delaware, but always make a point to reach out to my brothers and sisters in Iowa!

I'm signed up for my first half -- March 22, 2015! I have a 5K to run next Wednesday (assuming my back feels better!), then I launch into half training. I plan to run at least one to two 5K as part of my training. If all goes according to my training plan, I'll set a PR for longest distance run at 10 miles on 1/24, 12 miles on 2/7 (the first of the 5K's is on 1/31), and my first test at the half marathon distance on Valentine's Day!

Hello & Merry Christmas from Iowa. It's still green here and we have no snow. Very weird for this time of year.
My name is Amy and I'll be 40 in March...right before my first half marathon! I signed up last week for it, it's in May 2015. My training schedule starts next week!
I am also trying to lose 50+ lbs and I am hoping training helps. As long as I can eat right..which is something I struggle with.
I'm not new to spark people. I've been lurking here for a while. Decided I needed to post more and really get the full benefits of being a member.
We just had a new Planet Fitness open up here so I joined that and have been using the weights. Trying to work on my core.
Anyway, I am glad to be here!

Good Morning,

My name is Theresa (but call me Tee). I'm 66 years old, live in Maine, and I just signed up for my first half-marathon. Actually, I did a virtual half marathon last year on my treadmill to raise money for my granddaughter's robotic's team. This time I'm doing the real deal.

It's a year away so I have plenty of time to get in shape and train. I'm hoping this team will help me with my training. I've done two marathons, and the virtual half, but always as a walker. This time I want to be a runner! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, just discovered this group and it is perfect timing as I am planning to run my first half in 2015. No particular race in mind yet, but will start doing my race planning for 2015 soon.

This year my goal was to run a race per month and run my first 10K, and so far I am right on track for the race / month and have already run two 10K's, with another one likely in the plans for November.

Hi all. I am Sue from Northern Montana. I started running about 2 months ago and have been following the Active C25K program. I will be starting week 8 today and am loving it. I am currently falling just short of a 5k when following the program (usually get right at 3 miles). I will run my first "official" 5k at the Scheels zombie 5k in Great Falls, MT in October and my goal is to finish in under 35 minutes. I am also registered for the Grand Tetons inaugural 1/2 next June. Hope to get some great info and encouragement from those who have already been there.

Hi I'm Liz. I've been working up to running a 5k. Well yesterday I met that goal, but I don't want to stop there. My new goal is to run 10k. There is a race on Oct 4th and I want to be able to run the 10k.

Liz

Hi, my name is Barb. Have been on SP for about a month, but am a long time runner (off and on). I'm currently back on and training for the Air Force half marathon in September. Hope everyone is doing well ;-).

My name is Annette. I am a 39 yr old, married mom of 3 kids. I have been run/walking 5k's for the past 3 years. 3 weeks ago, I did my first 10k. I finished! My goal was under 90 min, and I did it in 86. Success. I plan to do more 10k's, but I have a goal of completing a 1/2 marathon before I turn 40 in November.
I want to go into my 40's fit & healthy, and setting a good example for my kids.

So I have a 12wk plan I am starting Monday, and should be able to do the 1/2 in Mid September.

I'm excited to be around others who love to run.

Keep trying! You will get there. It's hard work & determination that will get you there.

Hello Everyone!

I ran my first 5K on January 1st, 2014 and I ran 8.3 miles last Friday. I would like to complete a 1/2 marathon in about a month and am SO excited about reaching that goal.

When I started my weight loss journey in August, 2013, walking a mile was difficult. It's hard to believe that I have come this far. I believe that if I just jog a little bit farther every week, I'll reach my goals!

I'm excited to join the team!

Best,

Amy

Hello, I am currently signed up for a half at the end of June. I've been running since last September and have done several 5k's and on 10k. I joined a half training group through my local Y and have loved running with other people!! Other than my races, I've not had the pleasure of running with anyone else. Plus I found a local shoe store that also has a running club for FREE!!! So I run with that group some days as well. I would much rather run with other people, it helps motivate me and push me harder than if I run by myself. I always surprise myself at how far and fast I can go!!! Looking forward to my half, but also a little nervous!

Don't put off till tomorrow what you can accomplish today!

I admire your admiration on signing up for your first half marathon. That is a short time to train for a half marathon, but you can do it. Stay focused on that goal!

Hello - I am new(ish) to running and have signed up to run a half marathon on October 4th, 2014. I am a bit nervous that I can run that far. So far, 5K is the only thing I have entered. I hope to get inspiration from those who are trying this as well. I have the whole summer to get ready, I can do this!
