Good Morning,

My name is Theresa (but call me Tee). I'm 66 years old, live in Maine, and I just signed up for my first half-marathon. Actually, I did a virtual half marathon last year on my treadmill to raise money for my granddaughter's robotic's team. This time I'm doing the real deal.

It's a year away so I have plenty of time to get in shape and train. I'm hoping this team will help me with my training. I've done two marathons, and the virtual half, but always as a walker. This time I want to be a runner! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, just discovered this group and it is perfect timing as I am planning to run my first half in 2015. No particular race in mind yet, but will start doing my race planning for 2015 soon.

This year my goal was to run a race per month and run my first 10K, and so far I am right on track for the race / month and have already run two 10K's, with another one likely in the plans for November.

I'm hoping I get back on track starting tomorrow, training for 10/26 5k. Lots of work to do.

Hi all. I am Sue from Northern Montana. I started running about 2 months ago and have been following the Active C25K program. I will be starting week 8 today and am loving it. I am currently falling just short of a 5k when following the program (usually get right at 3 miles). I will run my first "official" 5k at the Scheels zombie 5k in Great Falls, MT in October and my goal is to finish in under 35 minutes. I am also registered for the Grand Tetons inaugural 1/2 next June. Hope to get some great info and encouragement from those who have already been there.

My name is Annette. I am a 39 yr old, married mom of 3 kids. I have been run/walking 5k's for the past 3 years. 3 weeks ago, I did my first 10k. I finished! My goal was under 90 min, and I did it in 86. Success. I plan to do more 10k's, but I have a goal of completing a 1/2 marathon before I turn 40 in November.
I want to go into my 40's fit & healthy, and setting a good example for my kids.

So I have a 12wk plan I am starting Monday, and should be able to do the 1/2 in Mid September.

I'm excited to be around others who love to run.

Keep trying! You will get there. It's hard work & determination that will get you there.

Hello Everyone!

I ran my first 5K on January 1st, 2014 and I ran 8.3 miles last Friday. I would like to complete a 1/2 marathon in about a month and am SO excited about reaching that goal.

When I started my weight loss journey in August, 2013, walking a mile was difficult. It's hard to believe that I have come this far. I believe that if I just jog a little bit farther every week, I'll reach my goals!

I'm excited to join the team!

Best,

Amy

Hello, I am currently signed up for a half at the end of June. I've been running since last September and have done several 5k's and on 10k. I joined a half training group through my local Y and have loved running with other people!! Other than my races, I've not had the pleasure of running with anyone else. Plus I found a local shoe store that also has a running club for FREE!!! So I run with that group some days as well. I would much rather run with other people, it helps motivate me and push me harder than if I run by myself. I always surprise myself at how far and fast I can go!!! Looking forward to my half, but also a little nervous!

Hello - I am new(ish) to running and have signed up to run a half marathon on October 4th, 2014. I am a bit nervous that I can run that far. So far, 5K is the only thing I have entered. I hope to get inspiration from those who are trying this as well. I have the whole summer to get ready, I can do this!

Hi everyone. I'm a 34 and I signed up for my first 5k on July 4 and using the C25K program (Zen Labs app). Today will be week 3 day 1. I'm shocked at how much more I can already do tho I am nervous about the increase in endurance I need going into the new week.

Hey everyone! My name is Martha, I'm 29 years old, and although I've only ever run one "official" half race, I do a lot of trail running, and have run many 25k races. Still, my favorite distance is by far that 13.1 - it's challenging, and you can really make improvements pretty quickly based on how hard you're willing to train.
I took the winter off running due to a high ankle sprain, boo. Not to mention the sub zero temps and sheets of ice everywhere. I'm finally cleared and have been back at it for about 2 months now, though I had to take a few weeks off because I had a severe allergic reaction that landed me in the hospital.
Injuries, illness, excuses, and set backs aside, I'm happy to be back, and looking forward to getting to know you all!!

I quit smoking in July of 2013 and completed the C25K program in September of 2013. Since then I have run several races (5k, 8k, 10k) and am registered for my first half marathon next weekend. I'm battling a minor case of shin splints in one leg, but am coping through the use of athletic tape. I look forward to being a part of this team!

Hi FinchFeeder! I don't think for a minute that what you have done is ridiculously crazy! :) You have a good chunk of time to build a run/walk base AND train for the 13.1. One suggestion I have is to take a look at the Galloway method of running and walking in combination (timed walk breaks if you will). It might just give you the perfect combo for your race in November.

Hi everyone! I've done a ridiculously crazy thing and signed up for a half marathon in November! I've done numerous 5k's, and did my second 10k just a week ago. The catch is, I've walked all these races. I've tried a couple of times to get a running program off the ground, and now I've got really good motivation in just under 32 weeks! I don't hold any illusions of running the whole thing, but I am going to train my little heart out to do the best that I can. I'm kicking off C25k attempt number three tomorrow morning. I downloaded a different app than the one I've been doing, and I'm hoping this change of pace will really help me transition over to the mindset I need to have.

Thanks for being here, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

I ran my first 5k in January with a time of 40.7. I was very excited about that number because the entire distance was on sand. And no compacted sand in sight…It was all fluffy! SO I can't say I particularly fell in love with running but I did enjoy being completely alone as I usually ran early in the morning or late at night. I need challenges to work towards as I still have about 20 lbs I would like to lose still. I found a half marathon on November 1st. Thought that would give me plenty of time plus the weather will be cooler! I found this group and hope to get to know some of you and gain some motivation!

I am BACK!
Not new to SP or this team, but I did take about a year break... BOO for me! I was on track and doing great, but then I kind of gave up. Now, my weight is higher than it was before the last time and I'm working on returning (and exceeding) to my previous level of fitness.
I completed my first HM in April of last year, just barely, in 3.15. Since then, I did nothing. Except eat.
Now, I'm back on track, running in the mornings, and working my way 30 minutes straight, then 3 miles, then 10K, then back to HM! This morning I successfully ran 25 minutes without feeling like I was going to DIE! :-) Bumping up the time to 30 minutes, next week.
Wish me luck on my journey back to being a runner!

Hi!
I just joined the community about 5 minutes ago.
Let me see here...where to start? I weigh in the 213-215 range. So far, I've run in two half marathons - 2012 & 2013 - and so far, I've kept a good training regiment but I'd like to branch out and find other effective ways to get to where I need to be. No personal best challenges, but it'd be nice to be able to walk the next day or have a stress induced panic attack that night.
The food thing is a mystery to me. How much, of what kind, when...it's enough to make my head hurt. It's another mystery to solve on my way to being a healthier runner.

Hi Friends,

I joined this community today. I ran a half marathon last year in San Jose and I am all determined to run a full marathon this year wtih some motivation. I am 200 pounds and would like to live a normal healthy life. I am not a gym or diet person. I believe in walking and running and eating normal home cooked food. So glad to be part of this community and hoping to learn more from others and stay motivated.

LOL Jenn! I run in the Saucony Hurricanes. I started when the Hurricane 3's came out and stayed with them. I've tried on a lot of other shoes, but those seem to work the best for me.
I have a pair of 15s but I am waiting until the snow's gone to start using those (probably March or April!)

Maybe we ought to start a new thread?

Hi Debby,

Asking me to pick my favorite running shoe is a little like asking me to choose my favorite child :) LOL There are a lot that I have tried on and run short distances in while working. I can't wear all of them because I overpronate quite a bit and I need more support to help me stay injury free. So....the ones I am currently wearing for training are the Saucony Hurricane 15. They are plush and feel really good even during my long runs. That said. I have worn the Brooks Adrenaline before and I like the newest model so I am considering those for my next new pair...either them or the Adidas Adistar Boost. OMG that shoe is just amazing! It has new material in the sole that actually makes your steps a bit springier (has a higher energy return).

As far as gizmos....I still love my Garmin 210 (even though its now an old model). Has everything I need. But I am loving some of my cold weather gear this winter. It has been REALLY cold in VA (more than we are used to) and I have the greatest tights (Mizuno BreathThermo) and a light weight running jacket that I wear over a base layer. Its the Saucony VizioPro. It has lights build right in as well as being reflective so I don't worry about cars seeing me when I run in the dark.

Hmmmm....this ended up being kinda long. Maybe we should chat by Spark Mail or create a new thread for more :)

Jenn

100 miles to the nearest decent sporting goods store is a bummer! I am really lucky....its a great company to work for, I get to talk running during my whole shift, AND we do fun runs out of the store once a week so I get paid to lead a 3 mile run! I really needed the extra $ as a single mom and worried it would effect my ability to run/train but this has actually been such a great mesh with my life :)

WELCOME Jenn! How convenient that one of your jobs is at a running store! You get to see all the new stuff as it comes in! (I'm jealous, I have to travel 100 miles just to get to a decent sporting goods store)

Jenn from NoVa here. I started running about 4 1/2 years ago and have run 5 half marathons since then. Going for #6 on March 15th and hoping for a PR since I am actually trying to train properly this time around (which has not been the case with all of the halves I have done).

I am a single mom with a FT and PT job (at a running store btw) who is trying to make running and taking care of myself a priority. I am looking forward to meeting all of you :)

Hi! I am Krista from Sioux City, IA. I ran a 10mile race this fall and had so much fun I decided to run a half. I was a soccer and rugby player for most of my life but I never liked to run by myself until the last couple of years. Running has been an awesome weight loss tool for me in the last couple of years and I am loving it!

Hi I'm Jen,
I'm a mom of 4 and I started walk/running a few years ago and this past September ran my 1st 5K straight through. Since then I have run 3 more 5K races straight, even improving my time by 3 minutes. I started out thinking that I could never be a runner, but now I know I am a runner. I may not be the fastest one out there, but I'm doing it!! I am planning on running my 1st 10K race in the middle of February and my first half-marathon in May!! I love the feeling I get when I finish a run! Also working on losing more weight through my continued adventure.

Hi there! I'm Heather, just joined the team today. Been a member of SP for years! I'm 31, single mom of 2 girls, from Hampton, VA. I started running the beginning of 2012, and since then I've done several races including 2 half marathons. I am now (starting yesterday) training for my 3rd half marathon which is March 16. I am doing a training program through the organization that does the event, and several other races in the area during the year. Running has definitely become a passion of mine and I'm really excited to get back out there.

While training for the race, I am also trying to lose quite a bit of weight. I am coming off a foot injury, and have gained about 50 lbs due to some medication I was taking for migraines. So, I have a long way to go. I'm currently 217, my goal is to eventually get down to 110 (I'm 5'1). I look forward to getting to know you all!

Hello everyone, my name is Sarah and I live in Scotland, I'm 42 I love walking and usually manage my 10,000 steps a day, I have a fit bit and would love some new friends. So a half marathon sounds like hard work but is probably the next step for me if you pardon the pun!!

Hi Naomi! WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME! I still learn something new every time I run/walk a half marathon (I call it wogging - walk/jog). Anyway, sometimes you have to carry water, some races are better organized, any rate, WELCOME to the team!

Hi, I'm Naomi.

I walked my first half marathon in San Antonio at Rock n Roll - Nov 17th. Did it in 4:08 - time limit was 4;00, I must have been ahead of the sag wagon. Learned a lot from that experience - most of all that I'm stronger than I think I am. Other lessons learned - prepare better! I did develop some blisters so a change of socks is in order. Researching those now, so if people have recommendations I'll take them. Also I just needed to have trained a bit more. I had always planned on just walking, but keeping up an 18 minute mile pace when you're feeling exhausted was hard.

I've signed up for the Biggest Loser run/walk half in March. It has a 5 hour limit. I'm going to try for under 4, but nice to know there's less pressure. I'm going to be more faithful to my training plan this time, so I feel better when it's over. I hobbled around for several days after that last one.
