Thanks, my hoop seems pretty large to me and I don't have any problems waist hooping, unless I try to go clockwise (which I am practicing now), I think it weighs 2lbs; when I first started out I bought one that was 3lbs and had the nubs on the inside and it left me sore all the time. I am going to try working on the lasso this weekend, you make it look very easy.

Good question...I notice a lot of people seem to count the revolutions their hoops do...I have never really given it much thought...Now...because you ask, I will do it tonight with varying size and weight hoops...

Hi everyone, I have a small heel problem and am not jogging for awhile to let the heel heal (giggle). I just picked up my Wave Hoop again that has been lying around the house. I was able to do 5 minutes and it feels great! I know this is probably not the kind of hoop you guys recommend, but it was when I looked into it a few years ago. Looking forward to doing 5 minutes several times a day to start with. I am also a real numbers person and discovered I do about 80 loops per minute for the time being. Do any of the rest of you know the number of loops you do per minute?

The bigger the hula hoop is, the slower the rotation will be. The smaller the hula hoop is, the quicker it will be. For beginners, the larger hula hops are recommended. Their large size means the hoops are more forgiving. This allows one to perform the movements precisely and slowly.
The large hula hoops also helps one get a feel for the hoop as it moves around the body. This allows you to get the right rhythm. By using a large hula hoop size, one’s rhythm will match those of the hula hoop. The recommended size for beginners is 38” at least. As your skill improves, you can start using smaller hula hoops.
I think typically you would want a 40-42" and 160 PSI.
Once you start trying to learn tricks you may want to switch to 100 PSI and different sizes
Welcome Phyllis. You will enjoy it. I'm fairly new myself. So far I have lost more inches than pounds which is ok - - the pounds will catch up.

Hi all, my name is Phyllis and I JUST ordered a 160 psi 1.5 lb hula hoop. I haven't done it for about 45 years. I got it to help strengthen core muscles as I hear it is great for that. I won't get it for another week or so, so I am just on this team to introduce myself and to read what others have posted. You all seem to be doing pretty good. Keep it up!

Hooped again today - - only dropped it a couple of times and made 18 rounds of the hoop this time. That's improvement!! Will try again later. I can definitely feel it in the core.

You go Girl! That is the way of the hoop but, it's still fun. I lost 20 with sparks I had lost 10 on my own. It's been like 4 months. Never stopped to think about it. Hmmm. Keep up the good job hooping. Keep me posted!

OK. I need to catch my breath. I just did my first "hula hoop" since I was in school and I graduated in 1964. Tomorrow I would expect to wake up with bruized legs, feet and ankles. After many tries within 5 minutes time, I was able to get the hoop to stay up where it belongedd 8 time around. I already feel it in my inner thigh and my waist is rather warm!!! It's hard to believe that I used to do this really well from my head to my toes way back then. I never though it would be this hard to get back into it - - then, of course, a much lighter hoop - not weighted. This one is 3# and 42" around. I'm exhausted!!

Welcome Glosonomo, and all new members to the Hoop team. Hooping is very challenging but, don't lose hope Mamabee. It's fun, it's relaxing and loads of fun. I have only done basic hooping but, am exploring different things. Keep me all posted on your progress!

I had that same problem, Goslonomo. I actually had bruises sometimes from the hoop and it never even spent that much time around my waist! Unfortunately, I can't say if it gets better or not because I put it to the side for a while.

I've been on SparkPeople for a while now, but haven't explored much or posted a thing. Time to start!
I've been doing a lot of walking and (some) jogging, and eating right. I've lost 27 lbs since March (yay!), but want to add in some fun new exercise options. I decided a hula hoop (LOVED mine as a kid!) was a great option. It's something I can do while watching a movie at night, and it'll hopefully help target my mid-section.
But it hurts! Did anyone else experience this when first starting? I'm using a 2lb hoop, and it's painful. I'm hoping to get used to it; I'm not giving up after a little pain!
If you have a strong enough WHY, you can bear almost any HOW.

Hello I am a New Member and I don't even have a Hula Hoop yet.I did not hula hoop when I was growing up and so I am New at hooping.I saw these hula hoops for $ 3.99 at the drug store and wondered about where to buy a beginning hula hoop and wondered the differences with Hula Hoops from quality to price.I am not one to go go spend a lot of money on something just because it's the trendy thing to do.If I buy the $3.99 Hula Hoop will it work just as well as one I pay more for? Thank you for starting this team,I look forward to learning how to Hula hoop.Diana

Hi Lily nice to have you on the team. My daughter is an expert at hooping. LOL I still spend a lot of time picking up the hoop from the floor. Keep sticking with it you will see improvement everyday. What kind of hoop did you get? I currently have one I got at Walmart which is 21bs and too small for me. But, I keep on trying regardless. We're in this together.

Hello everyone,,, I never hooped when I was younger,,,, and my daughter is so good at it ,,, that I thought I would give it a try,,,, just bought one yesterday and spent 30 minutes trying to tame the hoop!!!! LOL it is NOT as easy as it looks but it is fun and I love it.... even though the first 20 minutes I was very frustrated,,,, but I like that it is something that I can do with my daughter too.
