emoticon Erin! It is good to have you!

We live in Michigan, but my husband works for a company out of Cleveland, (in Strongsville actually). He ends up spending several weeks a year there. When our kids were younger, we used to go with him. We would swim and order room service while he worked. The kids thought we were on vacation.

Hi everyone. I'm Erin, a 30 year old stay at home mom in Cleveland, Ohio. I have 3 children, Elliot is 8, Owen is 3, and Miss Evie is 1 1/2.

I've had asthma practically forever. It was very rough in my younger years, in and out of the hospital. As an adult it only seems to act up when I get a bad cold. Exercise doesn't seem to bother my asthma to much but my inhaler is never to far away if needed!

Hi everyone, I just joined the team -- and am getting back into SparkPeople after about a 6 month hiatus. Trying to get myself re-motivated!

I'm 28, a PhD student, and have had asthma for what seems like forever! It's mostly triggered by my allergies (way too many of them to list), stress, illness, and exercise on rare occasions.

I've been having a tough time with my asthma lately -- I live in Florida where it seems like every tree imaginable is blooming, so both my allergies and asthma have been flaring up.

Anyway, I'm glad to have found this team!

Hugs to Cherly and the rest of the team. I'm off the awful meds and breathing well. YEAH! Just walked that dog and feeling so fine. Walking inside my pants now. Gotta learn how to take them in. Any suggestions?

Stacy,
Welcome to the team! Right now, the only exercise I am able to do is walking. I have hopes of doing more as the weight comes off. Just remember, anything you are able to do is more than you were doing before. Don't get discouraged. It gets easier. Your doctor is the best person to give you advice on the medications that can help make exercise a part of your life.

Hi Stacy, I do strength training 3x a week and I have a recumbent bike at home which I usually ride at a moderate pace (12-14 mph) for 45 minutes a day (just over 9 miles) in 15 minute chunks without a problem. It took me about 6 months to work up to that and I've lost a total of 89lbs since December 06 which has helped tremendously as well.

I have osteoathritis so I don't do much walking as my joints get too painful and walking upstairs is difficult, but I can do it slowly now.

Stacy,
Welcome to the team! I find that strength training exercises don't cause a problem with my asthma. You did the right thing slowing your exercise down until you were in control of the breathing again. I have to concentrate on breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. You should do better as you get stronger. So don't give up!

Welcome Stacy and glad to have you with us. There is not really any exercise that does not aggravate my asthma but take my relief inhaler 30 minutes before exercise. I do mostly walking whether it be the tapes, treadmill, or walking down the road. Good luck to you in reaching your goals.

Hello,

I'm new to the team. I'm 30 and was recently diagnosed with mild asthma. I thought I may have had it when I was a kid, but it was never diagnosed. A few years ago, I got sick with bronchitis, and since then, my breathing hasn't been the same. Cold weather or a short burst of aerobic exercise are my main triggers, and what happens with me is I can't stop coughing. I feel like I have a tickle in my throat that is preventing me from getting a good deep breath of air, so I just keep coughing. Eventually it goes away.

I have an inhaler that I use when the coughing doesn't go away on its own after a minute or two. So far I'm using it a few times a week or less.

Today for the first time, I had just a tiny little attack while doing some aerobic exercise. I took it down a notch and then was careful with the rest of my routine and I was fine.

I have a doctor's appointment coming up, so I can discuss my exercising with him.

What exercises do you do that don't give you asthma attacks?

Hi, I'm new here.

I'm a mild asthmatic who was diagnosed in my early 40's, although I had had some wheezy episodes in my 20's when I used to do a lot of Martial Arts and Circuit training. I actually went to see my Doctor because of a cough that wouldn't go.

I'm recovering from a cold which turned into sinusitis and a chest infection, has aggavated my asthma and forced me to stop exercising for a while.

I had gradually built up to doing 45 minutes on my recumbent bike every day (I also have osteoarthritis so low impact all the way). I had also been able to reduce my Bekotide to 2 puffs once a day, rarely used my ventolin and my peak flow was 480(expected for my height and age 450) up from 400 pre-execise.

My Peak flow was down to 290 at it's worst and is now back to 420. I'm on predisolone and antibiotics and have to see my Doctor again on Monday, but I began doing 15 minutes(3 miles) on the bike a couple of days ago. I seem to be managing that OK for now.

When I have asthma problems I always have severe chest pain with mine and tell them that I think it is due to my asthma but they always have to take me right back to make sure it is not heart related. I always get hooked up to everything and end up making the nervous because my heart rate can get so high from just laying in the bed. The last time I did this I got put in the hospital for the night and they did a stress test the next day to make sure there was no damage to the heart which there wasn't. It is amazing how fast you get back with chest pain.

yeah, i love how y'all know whats its like not being able to breath... my brother always called me a wuss because of it and whenever i have to run for the bus or something people give me weird looks because i'm gasping for air.

the last time i was at the hospital it took them over four hours before i was even called from the waiting room. i was at the point when i was too tired of struggling i just wanted to stop breathing completely... apparently i was turning blue cuz one lady yelled that to the nurse but i dont think they even replied, i didn't go in for about another hour after that.

Welcome Kim and Angela. My asthma is poorly controlled and is one of the motivating factors for me on this journey. It's already getting a little easier for me to breathe. Exercise induced asthma is so irritating. I can do non-aerobic exercise like walking but aerobic exercise can be a trigger for me. I know it is still creating fitness but it takes 3 times a long for the same results. You will find people who understand here. Glad you joined us.

Hello all! My name is Angela and I've been on and off SparkPeople for a year, but I just found this group. I'm 31, live in Seattle with my boyfriend (I always feel 12 years old when I say that).

I have had asthma as long as I can remember (it runs in my family too). It is currently controlled with advair twice a day and albuterol as needed (and some allergy meds here and there). All the major triggers set off my asthma (exercise, cold, allergies, illness, etc...). It's great to find a group that understand the struggle with asthma. We can all still exercise - and I do find that staying in shape helps reduce my asthma symptoms - we just have to find what works for us.

Good luck to all and I look forward to meeting all of you!

Hey everyone! My name is Kim. I've been on SP for a few weeks, but just joined this group. I was diagnosed with asthma in late August, just before my 21st birthday. (And after years and years of telling my parents I thought I had it!) Mine is generally pretty mild, usually triggered by exercise and stress, though my last major attack was from laughing (which I'm sort of okay with :).

Welcome Jaime-Kristal and I have the allergy induced kind. I too have the same problems everytime I get sick, it goes straight to the chest. The hardest thing for me is I always seem to get chest pain with mine and makes me nervous with the heart. Heart problems run in my family and when that happens I always end up in the hospital which I hate. My last time in was early November for a night wearing oxygen as well. Good luck in reaching your goals and we are always here for you anytime you need us.

i'm Jaime~Kristal and i've known i had asthma for around 10-12 years. it unfortunately runs in the family :0S i have exercise-induced asthma and allergy-induced as well... and i think a cold weather one too! *L0L* i take a blue puffer and now an orange one (used to be on a brown one).

in december i had an attack at work, we're not sure if it was from an allergy or from my getting pneumonia. every time i get sick, my asthma hits me hard. i had to go to the hospital twice for an oxygen mask, not the best christmas prezzie :0(

my doctor said if i worked out more and ate healthier i might improve my immune system and be able to start breathing easier, so here's hoping!

Welcome Tamar and Andrea! It is great to have you here (although I wouldn't wish asthma on anyone!)

Andrea, have you tried wearing a mask outside in the winter? I knew someone who found that the mask warmed the air in winter, so the cold didn't trigger her lungs. It might be worth a try. A scarf over your nose and mouth might do it!

If it is to be, it is up to me!

Glad to have you with us Andrea and yes we try to help each other out. I take Pulmicort 2 times a day for maintenance and Xopenex for a relief inhaler which is the same as albuterol but does not race the heart as bad. I have lost quite a bit for me and my asthma seems to be getting better. I usually over the spring, summer, and fall will have to use the relief inhaler more do to alleriges that I have to most everything. I have allergy induced asthma so that is why. My daughter also has asthma but not allergy induced due to she has no allergies but is on Asmanex once a day. She is also doing better in her breathing. We are trying to start a new challenge for March and if there are any ideas you would like to do please post them on that post I have put under the general forum and will be glad to work them in and help you out anyway we can. Hang in there and we are always here for you.

Hi, I'm Andrea and new to spark people and just found this group. I have had asthma for as long as I can remember (I am now 18). I quickly lose my breath doing day to day activities like walking to class (our campus is HUGE). It gets particularly bad during the winter, and makes it hard for me to work out for long periods of time. For now I take albuterol when needed (about 2-3 times a day) and flovent once in the morning and once at night. Don't know how much it's helping except at the time when I use it.
Looks like you guys really support each other and find a lot of help here. Hope I can do the same to help me with my life fitness goals!!

My name is Lynn. I had asthma as a baby and then out grew it until 94 when it decided to return here in the winter. I only use my inhaler when I have problems or get a bad cold.

I live in Southern Maryland with my husband of 20 years and my 2 girls ages 17 and 18.

emoticon "Conceivably" was definitely the correct word there. You are right, it could happen.

in that particular case, the mother was 16 when she had her first child, and her oldest (a daughter) gave birth at 16 also, she could conceivably become a great-grandmother by her mid-50s.

If it is to be, it is up to me!

I thought it might be...but you never know. If a lady married an older man with grown kids from a first marriage...well, I guess it could happen. But you are too close to my age for me to want to think about it.

Donna, thanks for catching that! One heck of a typo!

Although I consider, from time to time, the fact that a friend told me when both our daughters were in high school (DD was a senior, her daughter was a junior), that she became a grandmother at 32.

If it is to be, it is up to me!

Mary, did you really mean 2 adult GRANDchildren? How did you do that at 55? The little grandson looks like a keeper!

I am going to be 50 in August. It doesn't seem possible that I could be that old! I have been married for almost 29 years (in June) to a really great man. I have two sons and a daughter. My oldest son is going to make me a grandmother in April. Hooray!! I was diagnosed with Asthma in 2006. I think I must have struggled with it for most of my life, and was never diagnosed. Even as a skinny kid, I could never run like the other kids. I always became breathless. I have secondary Pulmonary Hypertension, which seriously concerns me since it caused right side heart failure. That makes me worry about exercising to the point of being breathless because I am not sure if it is damaging my heart. I do try to do strength training. That is supposed to be good for an old girl's bones. And muscle burns more fat. Sounds good to me!

My name is Cathy, married, 45 with 2 children, one from each of our marriages and we also have dogs and cats. I had asthma when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I thought I outgrew it but was told when I was about 26/27 that I just hadn't had an attack but I didn't outgrow it. A few weeks ago I had another attack and bronchitis. I am hoping that getting back into shape will help me breath better...and it was until the bronchitis and asthma attack!

My name is Cherly, married, 38 with 2 children. I was diagnosed with asthma in March 2002 and have been on a inhaler every since. I always wheezed as a child but never was actually told I had it till 2002 when I had a severe attack. I had reached my highest weight in Oct 2006 of 260 and justed diagnosed with diabetes. Since then I have lost 65 pounds and asthma and diabetes are now under control. My biggest support in helping me lose the weight is my husband. He is know trying to lose weight with me along with setting a healthy example for our kids.
