Hi, everyone! Charlene and Jenn, are you both still out there checking on spark? I was MIA for over 3 months due to a running injury that had me depressed and not wanting to be reminded of what I couldn't do, so JUSt coming back on the boards. My achilles is not back to normal yet, but is better than it was April/may, that's for sure! Just reading up on posts I missed while "gone". LOL!

Hope everyone's training is going well. :)

Hello Everyone!! My name is Charlene and I am going to be running the Chicago Marathon as my first marathon! I decided to sign up w/ my sister and her husband as they decided they wanted to do one marathon in their lifetime. I decided on my own to go along with them but hope this is not the only one I do. I would love to set the goal of one Marathon a year. I will also be doing 2 half marathons over the summer, first in June and second in August. I am very happy to be joining this group w/ hopes to make friends and gain knowledge along the way! Good luck to everyone and your training emoticon

Welcome Fraggle - I have a couple of friends doing the Grandma's marathon also - it should be a good one. I've seen some really fun reviews on it.

You'll have a riot in Chicago - this will be my 3rd Chicago marathon. I keep coming back because it's a blast!

Well it looks like I'm the first guy to chime in here. I'm adam and will be running chicago. it will be my 7th marathon after I do grandma's marathon this summer as a warm up run. But it will be my first chicago marathon.

what I hope from chicago is to PR with the new standards for Boston and get a garunteed spot, so thats breaking the 3 hour mark. I'm from the twins here in the water state/lakes state. Which ever one you wanna call it. and also this year Im kicking off my season with a 50K at the trail mix in bloomington just trying to transition in to the ultra-running.

oh and hey thanks for the invite Loves2run.

Renee -
I laid my toothbrush down on the counter this morning and just dragged my face across it. I have a pencil tied to my forehead to type because the only thing I can lift is my head.

All the triathlons and marathons are great for my cardio health, but WOW do I lose strength during these events! So I promised that this year, I would do a minimum of two weight workouts a week.

I've been seeing the 'chia' seeds pop into a lot of blogs out here also. I haven't tried them. I am a big flax seed fan. The Chia plant commercials keep popping into my head...CH- CH -CH- Chia! :-)

HAHA- you guys think you are joking- rubber gloves, face mask, lysol bomb- just a few of my tactics these past 5 days. My hands are raw from all the washing! I think I reached a new low when I handed my daughter a face mask yesterday afternoon and said, "Honey, I love you, but put it on." The funny thing, she didn't even blink about it! She and I went about our afternoon yesterday wearing our masks (hubby and son were quarantined in our room!) and I'm sure if a neighbor had popped in, they would have thought we were loonies. Well, I actually am one right now. LOL! BUT I'm happy to report that hubby went to work, son went to school (despite constant plees that now he had a headache and didn't yet "feel quite right". Haha, it was obvious to hubby and me that it was the almost 13 year old typical let's- see- if- I -can- stay- home- from- school- again- today tactic. So glad that last night he was starving and ate a big plate of food, and slept a good long sleep. Laundry has been running 24-7 and I have several more loads to get through, but I'll GLADLY take that if it means good-bye germs! :)

Wow, Nancy that must have been some workout- you must really push yourself! Hope you're not too sore today! I'm jealous. That's something I miss with teaching my two weight classes. Those two classes are the only weights I do for the whole week. I can't go so hard that I might not be able to finish the whole workout with good form, so I have to sacrifice pushing beyond where I'm comfortable, with staying where I KNOW i can get in all the reps without having to stop short. I maintain, but I never improve. I know I need to add in another day of ST on my own, but that would be on the weekend and I HATE having to go in my gym on the weekend.

Totally different subject, do any of you guys eat chia seed? I've been reading about it lately and wonder where I've been if it is such a super food and such an easy add-in.

Hi, Loves2run! Glad to have you! :)

Vent time- so, less than 3 days before we leave for my marathon. Daughter went back to school today after the stomach bug thing. Yesterday son started with it- came on with a fury. Nasty, nasty. Hubby must have felt left out so he decided to join in the fun. Daughter comes home from school today covered in some itchy, splotchy red rash everywhere and now a deep cough. I have never been so paranoid in my whole life. Nowhere in my house is it untouched by sick, vomiting people. O.....M.......G.....

Why nowwwwww?????

Hi Ladies - I'm so excited to stumble across this board!

My name is Kristen and I live just north of Chicago (Evanston for 2 years and Chicago for 4 years prior to that). This is my first marathon! I'm so excited but totally freaked out at the same time.

Last summer I did 2 half marathons and the summer before 1 half marathon and 2 ten milers.

I had some friends run Chicago last year and I totally caught the bug as a spectator. I was in awe of all the great crowds - it's true motivation.

Looking forward to this journey!!

Hi Angi! Welcome to the team! I'm the other Chicagoan so far, though I haven't lived there since my 20s. I grew up in Libertyville, and I want to Loyola in Rogers Park. What burb are you from?

Running thru Boys Town was probably my favorite neighborhood. There were tons of people in their yards, there were bbq events going on, there was great music... It was fantastic.

HI, Angi, I'm Renee. I was excited when I saw our member # of 5 went to 6. Welcome!

And congratulations on the 90 pounds. Phenomenal work! So great to have another member from Chicago on here to give us non-Chicas some inside info! :) I don't think I've ever been to Chicago and if I did, it was when I was a kid. I watched "Spirit of the Marathon" documentary with my hubby last week and it was a story of 5 runners running Chicago, from elite to first timer and it was so exciting watching it all set in chicago. It totally set the excitement meter to the next level for me!

Welcome to the team Angi!!!! Those are awesome goals! Looking forward to getting to know you too and WOW! I just checked out your page! Congrats on your weight loss!!! I am still working on getting there! Since you're from Chicago area - is there a neighborhood in particular you're looking forward to running through?? I see it's like 23 different neighborhoods the route goes through.

Hi everyone! My name is Angi, I'm from the Chicago suburbs, and this will be my first marathon. My goal for the race is "just finish". I have a case of runners knee, so I'm taking a couple of weeks off of running to try and get that in order before starting to run again. So, I guess my goal for training is to stay injury free!

Looking forward to watching this board in the coming months, I could always use a little extra motivation!

hahah thanks for asking. i rode across the country on a road bike, from north carolina to san diego. it was one of the most unbelieveable experiences of my life. even down to the fact that working to make a living will never be the same after a summer like that. :-)

the bridges aren't too too bad ... Queensboro - mile 16, 17 is killer but a wave of motivation takes you and you sheer to the top then down the other side and then you're in manhattan.

the wave start is LONG. i was in the 63rd corral lol. loooong time. like an hour from the gun time before i even crossed the start.

and hey, i, too, think clipless pedals are a crock. hahaha

You're funny Maureen! Let's just say I always brag about my triahtlon skills in this way:
I swim like a rock
I have the cycling skills of a fish (I mean, who came up with locking your feet into pedals?? I can hardly chew gum and walk at the same time, let alone, stop on two wheels and not drop and roll!)
At least with the run portion in my triathlons, I don't fall over (yet!). I know that if I can do a triathlon....ANYONE can!

I really hope to get into NY -- have heard some scary things about the hills (bridges) and the wave start....

Dash-- what did you do last summer??

Ok, first things first,- Nancy, I must have been typing when you were posting, because I didn't see your post earlier. So, Hi, Nancy! DOn't want you to think I had intentionally not greeted you, too! :)

Now, Maureen, you are hysterical because when you say you are the bump on the log--- that makes me want to roll on the floor laughing- YOU???? The one that made up your new semester calendar and was considering adding in 4 hours or so a day of workouts??? HAHAHAHAHAHA! I remember when I read that post, and I actually tallied up my typical weekly workout hours and came up with 12, I was embarrassed to write that after your plan. Make no mistake in believing this one, Guys- She's pulling the wool over your eyes! LOLOLOLOL! emoticon

Ashley, I went to your spark page and I want to congratulate you on your awesome transformation! I love seeing before and after photos and you are rockin it now! You cycle, too and see from your photos and captions that you biked across the country? Tell us about it! That sounds so super cool!

Whoa whoa whoa - hold the presses. I just went to friend Nancy on her page, and you have to go and check out her profile!

We got another studette on the team! Multiple marathons, multiple half marathons, multiple triathlons, working on 2nd 1/2 Ironman...

Renee is also a studette, teaching tons of exercise classes in addition to running. She is a rock star.

And tell 'em what you did last summer, Dash. Tell 'em what you did! Total studette.

So here's the funny thing to me. Among my group of friends, I'm the workout bunny, I'm the one always moving and shaking and grooving and thinking about getting another workout in, I'm the one that can't sit still, that would rather hike up the mountain than go out for lunch..

But here, on this team? Me? I'm the bump on the log.

LOVE THAT. It will push me so much harder to keep up with your fierce and phenomenal women!

Hey Welcome guys!

I'm Ashley - from Jeffersonville, Vermont - Chicago will be my third marathon!! I ran the Long Beach Marathon in 2009 in California and the New York City Marathon in 2010. NYC was unbelievableeeeeeeeee I hope you get in Nancy!! I didn't make it in the lotto so I snagged a spot with the American Cancer Society and just fund raised for them in exchange. It was awesome. I'm sure you know Renee - it's worth it - there are a lot of nice perks to doing it with a charity! How you ran Boston is pretty much how I ran Long Beach, just start slow and build up over time.

Compared to all you - I am SURE i am the true turtle!! Now I'm trying to shave some time off and see if I can challenge myself to the next level with running ... getting faster.

My marathon PR is 6:12:26 (Long Beach). I'm going for sub 6 in Chicago, which most definitely means 5:59:59 lol!!!

Hi Renee and Nancy!

Nancy- Time shmime. We're all turtles compared to someone else - I know Renee from the SP Marathoner team, and I'm a turtle compared to her, and she's a turtle compared to someone else, and even the people that came in last place in the Olympic trials a few weeks ago are turtles compared to the the ones who made the team.

The moral of the story? There is always going to be someone faster or slower, richer or poorer, taller or shorter, prettier or uglier. So don't compare yourself to anyone, stand proud, and do your THANG!

It very well might turn into a lottery like NY based on this, but I think we're a few years out from that. I did find it exciting that it sold out so quickly, though. My FB status yesterday said:

"I just received an email that the Chicago Marathon sold out today. Yep, 45,000 people registered within 6 days, much faster than the 25 days last year it took to sell out. Does this mean that more people are hyped up about marathoning than last year, or does it mean that more runners are realizing Chicago is a super cool city with the most supportive crowd imaginable?"

I'm not sure what the reason. Ideas, anyone?

Hi, Ashley and Maureen! Fancy seeing you here, Maureen! :)

I'm Renee from Atlanta, GA. If all goes well on Feb. 18th- Myrtle Beach Marathon, Chicago will be my 4th marathon. First one was Boston in 1995 when I was living there. Had never run before and was challenged by one of the "fast guys" that I could never do what he did (I was a gym class junkie). Well, I joined a charity running group for Cancer, started with mile 1 and several months later ran Boston. Greatest experience! However, it messed with my knees and I ended up dropping running all together months after.

I started back running a year ago in February to help speed up losing my winter 10 lbs that I always seem to gain. Loved it, felt good, pounds came off easily and i ran the Nashville RnR half that April. Felt good so kept on training. Ran Savannah RnR this past November and now will be running Myrtle Beach in less than 2 weeks.

Looking forward to looking ahead with Chicago! :)

Hi!
I'm Nancy from Omaha. This will be my 3rd Chicago marathon. I can't believe this one sold out in 6 days. I hope they don't turn this race into a lottery like NY or Nike. It's really hard to plan for training if you don't know what races you're going to be attending. (I am in the NY lottery this year also.)

Maureen, I am not even going to post my times --I'm a turtle compared to you! Can't wait to see your PR! emoticon

Hi, my name is Maureen. I hail from Chicago, though I'm living in Colorado now, and by the time October rolls around, I'll be living in Barrow, Alaska.

Confused? Me, too.

This is my 2nd marathon. I ran Chicago last year as my 1st. I had pneumonia and was advised by everyone not to run, and I ran anyway, and I finished before the pregnant lady who started contractions at mile 16 and gave birth 2 hours after finishing.

This year a PR should be cake.

However, I did long training runs, so I know what I'm capable of. My time goal this year is conservatively under 4:30, but closer to 4:15. It might change as all my training will be on a treadmill in Barrow. All of it. Yeah. Polar bears. No outdoor running advised.
