Hi - good to see you here and posting :-)

I went to have a peek at your SparkPage to find a bit more about you, but it is set to "Private" so I couldn't access it. You don't have to, but if you open it by editing your SparkPage (remember to save it before going out) then you will get tons more support from all your teams, plus the general message boards if you post there too.

Congratulations on the amount of fitness minutes you have, and in such a short time. That is fantastic :-D

Keep posting - some teams are more active than others, and some are more geared up for fun than the hard yards of exercise/nutrition and some down time, which is also very important to give your body a chance to repair itself.

Take care,
Kris

Hi class of Apr 26-May 5th!
Following a SparkCoach suggestion I am joining new Teams that might help me learn some new things along my journey.
I am from Turin, NW Italy. I started my SparkPeople adventure on the 4th of May. At that time I couldn’t run or riding and my severe obesity was a risk to my health. My target is “mens sana in corpore sano”, that is mental and physical wellness and BMI around 25.
I do not have an obsession with balance, but I see that when I'm well it becomes easier to get rid of the ballast.
Last June, when my weight had dropped to 140 kg, my youngest daughter said to me: "Dad, do you run with me?". I started to run and running to sweat a lot. For safety, the next day I paid a visit to sports medicine. Being a 50+, I run with caution, taking care not to exceed 95 heartbeats.
By limiting calories, avoiding junk food, I eat a bit of everything. At this moment in time my BMI is 29.
Running/cycling in the morning before going to work and on weekends, slowly but constantly I passed 15,000 minutes fitness in 6 months. Coach Nicole trained me to run 5K. After 8 weeks I have also done a virtual race and for me it was a great satisfaction.
I wish to all of us to meet the motivation and to say: ”who I am really keeps surprise me”.

You don't need to apologize for being 'long winded' because you certainly weren't - you should see some of MY posts - LOL!

I wonder if the changes you made nutritionally were sudden. I am also a creature of habit - I have a diagnosed "Obsessive Personality Trait" (which isn't the same of OCD.) Where it comes to food tastes etc., if someone is like this it is best that the flavour changes are gradual too. Sudden changes with diet or exercise often ends up with people going back to what they were doing. Where it comes to your husband and his choices when he is out, there isn't a lot that he CAN do except know the pitfalls in Restaurants etc., and make better choices, and perhaps smaller serves.

You are both doing really well, tho! :-)

Thank you for the warm welcome, SLIMMERKIWI.

I think this journey is more challenging for my husband on several levels:
1. He is more a creature of habit than me. He doesn't like change.
2. I don't work outside the home at this point. He does and often is provided with lunch at the office or asked to attend meetings and other functions at restaurants.
3. If my husband doesn't like a food or flavor, that's it forever. On the other hand, I have this ability to somehow adjust my tastes to the point where there really is nothing I don't like.
4. My husband is inquisitive and skeptical by nature. He makes a wonderful CPA, but open-minded, not so much! He wants proof and statistics before he will accept the newest ideas on nutrition and fitness.
5. He works long hours, so he doesn't do the planning, shopping, or preparing of our meals. He just doesn't have the time to be involved that I do.
6. He gets lots of fitness activities outside during the weekends on our three acres. Our current project is clearing several trees that have fallen. Otherwise he'll have just a short walk with me on a weeknight.

Since we began making lifestyle changes, my husband has gone from size 40 waist pants to size 36 and 17 1/2 neck shirt to 16 1/2. His weight is down to 178 from 206. So he is successfully dealing with the above challenges. I give him lots of credit for these changes. I think however it would be very easy for him to revert. He doesn't quite get the lifestyle change vs diet thing. I'm working on that with him.

Thanks for asking. Didn't mean to get so long winded with my answer.

Hi! Wanted to share with and learn from those who started SP at the same time I did. So far I've been successful moving toward my goal. Fitness is my weakness, the nutrition part is relatively easy for me. I love my SparkFriends, the SparkTeams I've joined, and the never ending encouragement I've found as I explore SP. My husband is on this journey with me which makes for interesting discussions and challenges. He often asks me when I am using the laptop, "Are you Sparking again?" Yep and loving every moment of it!

Hi VEKZUS - it sounds like you are really enjoying you new-found family and home :-)

I stumbled on this site a few years ago, while googling nutritional information - like you I really enjoyed the articles and spent HOURS in there - often forgetting to eat - LOL! Anyway, the rest is history!

I'm glad that you are finding it really beneficial for you and your family. Your children will certainly thank you for it later in life when they are aware of what happened - LOL!

As a co-moderator of Dealing with Depression (over 860,000 members) I can tell you that SP certainly DOES help a lot. By eating a healthier diet and getting some exercise it improves moods etc. heaps on top of giving us a better feeling about ourselves.

Take care and keep up the good work.

I guess I neglected to introduce myself here! My name is Suzy, and I started the same time you all did. I have been reading non-stop on this site, and at times have gotten quite overwhelmed. But I love it. I am trying to change my lifestyle as well as my children's to set a good example for them.

So far so good. We are shopping and eating differently without much discomfort, LOL. And I am slowly starting to exercise. I am a single mom, and do have a little bit of stress in my life, but I have found that SparkPeople has actually helped my mood and focus more than anything else ever has.

I just love it here :) And I look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can!

KIMMIENEZ - It sounds what you made was quite nice, but be careful with cutting oil. Ensure that you are still getting enough in your diet because we DO need this for virtually everything - mental health, skin, brain functioning, etc. etc. Just make sure that it is the healthy oil as in Rice Bran, Olive Oil, Avocado, nuts/oil, sesame oil etc. Steer away from tropical oils as in palm-based ones and animal fats. Flatulence wasn't the only through to cross my mind - ".... ....... the eye of a needle" was another one :-) I can't STAND coconut milk so don't have it - part the reason why I don't like the bulk of Thai food.

Hi everyone :D

SLIMMERKIWI... the first attempt was TERRIBLE! I couldn't eat it. I went out and bought cheap tupperware and gave it to a homeless man nearby.

I made Dahl today with green lentilles, garlic, onion, scallion, chick peas and spinach. Soooooo good! Recipe calls for oil and coconut milk, but based on the calories in those, I did without them and it still tastes great. No flatulence.... yet!

I can't get tired of how great this site is! The support makes working towards my goals SO much easier!

Carrie - I am glad that you have that Dr's appointment :-)

7DUALITY7 - welcome to SP :-) I read your SparkPage and am wondering if you have someone to help you with the emotional side of things? If not, please ask your Dr for a referral to a Therapist. They will be able to give you the tools to help you through your issues, including the IVF stuff.

Carolyn - hi, and welcome to SP! I am glad that you are resolving to get on this healthy lifestyle journey NOW rather than a few years down the track. It is a lot easier when you are younger. make sure that you use the Nutrition Tracker - it is a real eye-opener!!

Sobe - that is an awful lot of weight to gain in such a short time. Have you spoken with your Dr about it? Have you been checked for things like PCOS, Hypothyroidism, Diabetes, etc. - all of which can contribute to weight issues. I hope that you have told your Mum how you feel when she puts you down. Whether she realizes it or not, that is a form of abuse!

KIMMIENEZ - how did the lentils go? (apart from windy - LOL!) WHICH BRINGS ME to this point - gradually increase this into your diet because a SUDDEN increase in fibre can have a huge negative impact for a while involving toilets and breeze :-D

Beverly - welcome aboard! Good for you for wanting to do something about your weight, BUT I MUST CAUTION YOU - 120lb loss by the end of the year is TOO MUCH TOO QUICKLY! You are far better off to go about this slowly - it is more likely to stay off; is far better for your physical health and is far better for your mental health. Quick weight-losses usually mean gaining when you reach your goal - it creates the yo-yo effect! You are better off to aim for 2-3 lb per week, but having said that, I actually believe that putting a set number as a goal by a specific date is setting yourself up for problems further down the track. Rather than saying "I want to lose 'X' amount of weight by ..." you are better off saying "BY ....., I want to have lost some weight!" By eating healthy, balanced meals and snacks MOST of the time, and getting the appropriate amount of exercise, your body will take care of the rest!

KELJOISM - My grandson came out a huge baby too - 10lb 14oz. Thank you for the comment about the team leaders - that is nice :-) I am reading a little between the lines here - do I detect some depression and/or anxiety issues? I feel that for you to get on top of the weight issues, you need to address your emotional issues. IF you like, you can join the Dealing with Depression Team through the link at the bottom of my post, and join. It is an extremely interactive team and there is heaps of support from people who have similar issues - medical, emotional, weight, relationships etc. etc. The other thing that I will suggest is this if you have not already done so; make an appointment with your Dr and discuss your feelings, and also the weight issue. It COULD be that there is something else medical going on, like Hypothyroidism, Diabetes which can impact on our weight and emotions. Also, if you aren't eating a healthy, balanced diet, it is possible you could be deficient in various minerals, etc. You will find that if you start getting a little bit of a walk in each day - even if it is only a couple walks to the mail box, you will be starting to get your body used to the changes that it needs to make. Keep in touch and good luck!

Charmaine - hello and welcome :-) This site has EVERYTHING here that you need to get on this healthy lifestyle journey. Read the articles in the Healthy Lifestyle section and use the tools, my favourite being the Nutrition Tracker.

Karen - hi :-) As far as the weight-gain from a recent hospital admission, this isn't uncommon, but when you get active again the weight often drops. As I have mentioned to the others, using the nutrition tracker is fantastic for helping us to drop the excess - it is a real eye-opener for those who have never thought about what they are eating previously.

I'm new to Spark People and to this team. Somehow I ended up on 9 teams but I just cut that down to 3. It seems like the team leaders here are very interactive and helpful.
When I was born I came out a huge baby and I've been getting bigger ever since. But now I'm just miserable about the way I look and feel. It's only going to get harder as I get older so I need to lose the weight now.
I'll admit I'm generally negative, am full of excuses, and emotionally immature, all of which hinder my progress in anything. I'm here to get support from y'all because I'm tired of talking about doing something with people I know and then not doing it. It's embarrassing.
Out with the pout. I really need to do this.

Kelly Jo

Hey Everyone, my name's Beverly and I'm looking for a group to help keep me accountable to my goals. I was doing fine going to gym and switching up my food habits slowly and lost about 6 lbs and saw some muscle definition before my life kind of shook me up and I lost my motivation the last month and reverted almost back to where I was, so here's my attempt to get back on track and hopefully make a few friends along the way. I'm 23 and living in Charlotte NC and would love to get to know some of you and hopefully share some of the journey to a healthier body. My goal is to drop and maintain 120 lbs by the end of the year and fit back into all my fabulous clothes :) I'm tired of baggy and want my curves back.

Hi all, my name is Sobe and I am 25years old. As a teen I was extremely thin but as I became an adult it seemed that i would gain weight very quickly and it got worse when I got married. I have gained 50 lbs in the past 3yrs. And ever since things just haven't been the same. I can no longer do as much as before because I tend to be lazier. And also the fact that my mom puts me down and makes fun of me because I am no longer slim. Even though she is in the same situation. Well, I joined with hopes that I can lose enough weight to feel good about my self and to show my mom that if you really want to you can do it. And of course to be able to wear that little red dress again.

Hi everybody! My name is Carolyn. I live in western New York (near Lake Ontario). I'm 23, a graduate student, just married 9 months ago, no kids yet. I was never skinny, but I've gained a lot of weight in the past year - about 20 lbs. I'm sure it's from lack of exercise, too much free pizza, and beer on the weekends! I'd like to reverse this change before I have to buy new pants for the third time - my jeans are getting pretty tight again :-(

I'm excited to get to know everyone! Go team :-)

Hello all, another new user who is excited to be here after hearing some good things about this site. I am an Aussie who is living in Turkey for a year so having some English speaking natives to chat to would be nice! I am looking to lose 10 kilos (22 pounds, ouch sounds worse when it is put in pounds!). I am desperate to lose some weight before my next IVF cycle which is in 6 weeks. I have done 2 cycles already and it was the cause of my current weight gain - emotional and medication related I think! My diet has mostly been low carb for the last 10 years or so after I gained 25+ kilos after pregnancies. I lost that weight and kept it off but during my slip up times I have gained up to 10 kilos.

I have been put on Metformin for IVF (egg quality) but as I had many symptoms of pre-diabetes (and it runs in my family on both sides) I thought I was lucky to get it for IVF because I am getting a 2-for-1 deal I think! Would love to chat to anyone else in a similar position ie. rural/isolated, IVF, low carbers or Metformin users.

Thanks for reading emoticon

KIMMIENEZ - welcome to SP - I am sure that you will find a lot of useful information here. One thing that has taken my eye is that you mention being "vegetarian but crave sweets." Being vegetarian doesn't necessarily equate to healthy eating, as in healthy OR balance! It MAY be that you aren't getting enough quality protein - a lot of vegetarians don't. Use lots of lentils, split peas, dried beans, tofu, etc., and healthy fats, and if you eat dairy products make sure that you have things like cottage cheese. Make sure that you use your Nutrition Tracker. I suggest weighing all of your food for increased accuracy so that you get a proper over-view of what you are eating. At the end of the day click on "See Today's Full Report" which will take you to another page which has two pie charts. One will show the recommended percentage of carbs/fats/protein, and the other with what you actually consumed. From this you will be able to tweak your intake so that you have that healthy mix. The other thing I will suggest is that talking with your Dr and asking for bloods to be done to see if something else is going on, may be beneficial.

PENGUINWALKER - unfortunately a lot of people have band surgery thinking it is the answer to all prayers, and so don't really work at it. As you will know, it only really gives people a head-start - you still have to do the hard yards. I suggest that you gradually go down the calories again, and ensure that you get that balance that the Dietitians would have recommended. Where it comes to exercises, if you find it hard getting started with them while on your feet, try walking on the spot while seated. Swing your arms around in time to music. Do side bends etc. There are lots of things that you can do which will elevate the heart rate and help you burn calories. Swimming is also another really good one - in fact it is better than most other forms because it not only takes the pressure of the joints, but it burns more calories because you are PUSHING against the water, which is a lot harder than air!

Esther - hi to you too :-) I ams ure that by reading the articles in the Healthy Lifestyle section and using the Nutrition Tracker you will find that the weight starts to come off. Just aim for slow losses tho' - fast ones aren't advisable or healthy!

Hi Carrie - have you talked to your Dr about the weight issue? It might be worth it to see if there is anything medically going on - nip it in the bud now rather than later. I have a feeling that you will come out on top - determination :-)

Esty - this site CAN be a bit overwhelming to start with, but I can promise you this - in no time at all you will be an old hat at it :-) Just make sure that you keep in regular contact on the message boards because this is where you will get the most support. Like you I used to eat very little fat, but I always knew that, well before SP. I don't particularly like the feel of it in my mouth. I have had to FORCE myself to consume more, but when the Dietitian put me on Omega-3 Fish Oil supplements at 8mg fat a day, it made a big difference. Mind you, I am not suggesting that you do that, and if you want to, then if you are taking any medications, check with your prescriber first because they can interfere with some meds. A good way to increase your fats is to eat a small handful of walnuts or almonds as part of your snack regime.

PENGUINWALKER - welcome aboard :-)

JESSW8 - welcome. It sounds like you need time-management help. You can do this best by bulk cooking the main part of your meals - casseroles, soups, healthy pizza etc., and freezing them in serving portions. That way you take advantage of specials with meats/veges, save money on power/gas, and also save a lot of your time. When you are tired you have a healthy 'go to' meal, or when you don't have the time you have them on board as well. I do this all the time and it works out really well. The other thing I will suggest is this - don't aim for fast losses. It is one thing to have a personal trainer etc. but sometimes we have a tendency to go overboard with this and they are not always best qualified - a lot just have basic certification and not good solid understanding of the healthy way to do things - they want results and they want them now! You are best off to have at least ONE day without the exercises - your body needs this to repair itself from all the tiny miniscule tears that the muscles suffer - and they WILL have those tears. make sure that you get some YOU time to get your second-wind!

Kelly - 60lb in two months is a lot to gain - psych meds and prednisone can do this quite easily with some people. Congratulations on the weight that you have lost so far - that is great :-) A good way to increase your fats is to have walnuts or almonds. They are also a good source of protein! Avocado is also a good, healthy form of fat. Cheddar Cheese is good for protein and fats, altho' the fats are partly saturated fats so go easy on it. I don't have bad knees but I do have a bad back (scoliosis and arthritis) but there are plenty of exercises that you can do. I get the bulk of my walks by putting my groceries and laundry away one at a time. It is on carpet so it isn't hard and jolting on the joints. Walking on grass is relatively good, just break it down to smaller increments, time-wise. Swimming is another excellent form of exercise - it is great for the joints and a good way of burning calories. I would be inclined to ask your Dr for a referral to a Physiotherapist so that you can be properly assessed and given the appropriate exercises to do, and told what ones to steer clear of. They also help with lung exercises - I had these when I was in hospital after an accident which partly affected my lungs. Your son may be mad now, but in time he will get over it! He may even find that he enjoys it :-)

Hi I am new to the site. I am 5'5 and weigh 188. A few years back I was put on a medication that caused me to gain 60 pounds in 2 months. I got off the medication but I have never been able to lose the weight. I have lost 12 pounds in the last two months. Using a high protein low carb diet. According to this I am taking in the right amount of carbs but not enough fats. I also have trouble finding an exercise plan because I have a bad knee and a bad back. Need some ideas of what I can do. I can't walk far because I have lung problems. Can anyone help with an exercise program.

I am 48 years old and have found that the older I get the harder it is to lose weight. I am trying to encourage my teenage son to lose weight as well. He refuses to exercise and is extremely hard headed. I have started making him walk home from school 3 days a week. He is mad about it, but that is the only exercise he gets.

I hope someone can help me with tips. Looking forward to losing more weight. I need to lose about 40 pounds to get to a weight that is proportioned to my height. LOL...I am short and fat.

thanks
Kelly

Hi all! I'm 31, my youngest (girl) just turned 3 in April. After having my daughter my sister was getting married in 3 months. I managed to lose all the baby weight and quite a bit extra (hired a personal trainer, ate right, exercised daily). All went well and I was feeling great, and looking better than I had since I got pregnant with my oldest (he turned 8 in January). I trained for and completed a 1/2 marathon in Fall of 2010. Fast forward.....I hurt my foot, took a new job that consists of more stress and 2 hours a day out of "my" time (40-45 min drive each way). I'm now 30 lbs heavier, slightly depressed, way more cranky and not motivated!

I have two of my best friends from college getting married this summer and I'm in both weddings (one in London, one in Texas). I haven't spent a large portion of time with these girls for 10 years.....That's the short term reason for doing this(and lots of photos being taken of me in this current shape). Long term, I want to be happy and healthy and the best mom I can for my kids. Telling them "I don't want to, I'm tired" isn't what I want to do anymore. I want to enjoy them and have them enjoy me. I'm applying for and praying I get a job that will get me back to town.

I'm new to this website and have a lot to learn but hope to gain motivation and some new "friends" that I can share successes and motivation (giving and getting) with. I look forward to reading some of your stories also:) emoticon

hi

well Im not even sure if I am doing the right thing here LOL, I guess I will just find out as soon as I post the message. Have just joined today. have been doing weightwatchers but decided to give this a go when I found out its free! so if I get on with the site I will be swapping over and canelling my ww account as could really do with saving that money for a potential move abroad. So far I am a bit overwhelmed with the site, its taking time to find stuff, but I have learnt a very important fact: I dont eat enough fats (something I didnt realise on ww as it doesnt break down the food diary into carbs, fats and proteins etc). at 5 pm (so all bar dinner tracked) I had consumed 6 g out of the recommended 30-ish grams of fat!! wow. well I know where to start tweeking my food intake. anyway looking forward to getting to know people and sharing my journey with you. more to come about me as time goes along xxxx

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if I'm doing this right - but here goes. I live in Michigan and I have been up and down the scale my entire life. My highest weight was 280 at which point I had lap-band surgery. I lost 120 lbs, but I have gained 40 back (current weight is 200). I eat very healthy and know a lot about nutrition, but I eat too much. I have to accept the fact that if I eat over 1400 calories a day, I will gain weight. I'm trying to get motivated to try again, but I just feel so tired of always being in this place of needing to lose. I also threw my knee out six months ago (osteoarthritis due to lifelong obesity, will need knee replacements), and that derailed my exercise regime. I usually get back on the saddle but I just haven't had the heart. I was glad to come across sparkpeople.com, and I'm sort of using this to get me back in the swing of exercising and tracking my food intake. So far I enjoy the site a lot. Looking forward to finding motivation in this community.

Hi everyone, this is my first time here. I'm excited. I'm 5feet and far from my healthy weight at 140lbs. My lowest since i was 10years old is 120lbs and my highest is 175lbs. I'm a fit person who loves exercise and I love motivating others to get out of bed and sweat! I'm also a fitness instructor and would LOVE to LOOK the part. I think my diet may be the problem. I'm vegetarian but crave sweets ALL the time. Hope being a part of a team helps! I certainly need the help!

Crystal - Hi :-) You have everything that you need to reach your goals, right here on SP. In time you will get to where you want to be, and be really proud of yourself in the process :-)

Eva - Welcome, and I am sure that you will enjoy what is on offer here, too :-D

Penny - welcome back to SP. By being active on the message boards you will find that you will makes TONS of new friends, and enjoy your journey even more :-)

Haley - let me know if you can't get your insurance because I can give you links to a number of sites which provide free or cheap Medical/Therapy appointments as well as free or cheap prescriptions.

Sara - welcome. I wonder if your weight-gain on quitting smoking was partly because you substituted putting a cigarette into your mouth, for food? Altho' you may have a sedentary job, you will find that you can get more mobilization into your day if you get up regularly and walk to the water cooler - just 1/2 or 3/4 fill your glass so you have to go more often. Also, regular bathroom stops (whether you need them or not) is a great way to get those extra steps in. Also, while you are at the computer/phone, are you able to walk on the spot? If possible, do arm circles, too - it helps with the circulation as well as burning calories.

4EVAGODSJOY - welcome to SP. The good news is that this IS achievable. I know of many here who have 2-300lb or more - all naturally, and are maintaining. Because of the excessive weight which COULD mean that there are other medical issues going on, I would suggest that you make an appointment with your Dr ASAP and ask what exercises would be appropriate for you, and what best to avoid. If need be a referral to a Physiotherapist to help with any skeletal issues would be helpful, too. Also, depending on bloods (Diabetes, etc.) a referral to Dietitian may be advisable so that you get advice based on YOUR needs and not just generic advice.

NELSONGRC - welcome - I am glad that you have found the Nutrition Tracking features. This is why I joined in the first place, and it is the BEST thing that I could have done - LOL!

I thought I did this already, but apparently not. I've been on SparkPeople before, and tend to mix the times together emoticon

My name is Sara, and I live in Two Rivers, WI (Southeast of Green Bay). I am 35 years old. I have a significant other, Ted, who is a chef, 2 unofficial stepkids, (Sonia is 15 1/2 and TJ is 11), and seven cats. I work full time in customer service (so computer and phone all day) and am also a graduate student working on my MBA. I was pretty active in college, but once I got a "real" job in an office, my weight went up. It skyrocketed when I quit smoking 5 years ago. I set a long term goal to be in a healthy BMI by the time I graduate in May 2013. Short term, I'm running in the GoDirtyGirl Wisconsin in August.

Thanks Kris! Good advice. I had a lot of testing done around 4 years ago. My husband has started a new job and our insurance should start in the next couple months. Once it does, I will probably find a Dr. and have tests redone. When I was pregnant I had gestational diabetes, and when I had the original tests done all I was told was that PCOS is a pre-cursor to diabetes. I'll probably look for a new PCOS Dr. and therapist when once our insurance kicks in.

Slovenia! :)

Hey Eva, I'm also vegetarian, because of the same reasons as you (I volunteer at a local shelter). If you need any help with recipes or just general advice where to get your nutrition, let me know. Like Kris said, lots of lentil and similar stuff. I eat more diversely since I went veg, since I started to think about what I eat more.

Cindy - I hope that your shoulder surgery is now behind you and a success. Congratulations on taking that weight back off. I am sure that you will reach your goal. Don't forget to keep in touch on the message boards - you will find this a much easier journey, then :-)

Andri - I had the borderline pre-diabetes diagnosis, and I also had very high cholesterol levels (but v.low HDL) even tho' I was on meds for cholesterol AND ate a very healthy diet. I also never ate a high calorie diet - generally around 1650 - 1800 cal's daily. My dietitian figured the problem very quickly because I took her some printout from my Nutrition Report. After her input, and after I had lost approx. 50lb, my cholesterol and HbA1c is now perfectly normal.

Haley - PCOS can be a right pain in the butt where it comes to weight issues. Have you been checked for Diabetes etc. too? You have identified that you are an emotional eater, so really what you need to do is find a substitute. You have a 11 month old baby, and I would be inclined to think that HE could be that substitute. If you feel like you need to nibble and it isn't real hunger, are you able to pop him into a pushchair and take him for a walk, talking to him about all the things that you see on the way? Things like butterflies, leaves, flowers, etc. can all be marvelous fun for a littlie, the fresh air would be wonderful for you both, and you are getting your exercise by default! It will all help with your weight issues, and possibly help to relieve some of the stress that you have. Also, ensuring that you eat a balanced diet, with plenty of fruit/veges, and quality protein is another way to help you with your emotions. IF you find that you are still having difficulties, perhaps talking with your Dr and asking for a referral to a Therapist who deals with this type of issue would be very helpful, because they will be able to give you the appropriate tools to deal with emotional issues in a healthy way and possibly also help to resolve some of them for you.

Hi all. My name is Haley, I am soon to be 29, married to my wonderful husband Josh, and we have an 11 month old baby boy, Jackson. I have been diagnosed with PCOS and I am an emotional eater. I learned about spark people through a book I read called "The PCOS Diet Plan". I need all the help I can get. I lost almost 30 lbs on my own a couple years ago. I've gotten married and had a baby since then and gained all but 5 lbs back, and I seem to be struggling with losing even a pound lately.

Hello, my name is Cindy. I've been on another popular food plan for a little over 2 years and I decided to give SP a try. I had lost a total of 62 lbs as of May of last year and I gained 18 back while I was out of commission after shoulder surgery. I have since taken all but 8 of those pounds back off over the last four months. I have 50 more lbs to go to get to goal and I'm ready to get serious again.

TIETSORT1 - Hi and welcome :-) Your friend has given you a good helping hand telling you about us. Don't worry about having gained back 40lb - you are still 40lb lighter than you were before.

HINDSAYEHMARIA - It must be something about teachers joining today - LOL Welcome! I am sure that if you apply the knowledge that you can learn here, you will have no problems reaching your goals, AND get enjoyment on the way.

Amanda - Chasing your daughter in the park is a wonderful way of getting in some exercise. Rather than chasing to start with, if you find that difficult, just kicking a ball to each other is a great start.

April from Mississippi - hello to you :-) I am so glad I joined this site a few years ago. I reached my goal and decided to stay on. That is helping me to keep at my goal weight :-)

DMCCULLOUGH1 - Hi and welcome. Have you discussed your weight gain with your Dr? If not, I would make an appointment and do so. It is possible that some bloods would be done to rule out things like Hypothyroidism or Diabetes, both of which can contribute to weight issues. Make sure that you don't make sudden changes to your lifestyle - baby steps are the way to go. That way you are far more likely to see permanent success!

MTUI81 - is there any reason why you are avoiding red meat? There are lots of nutrients to be had from that - the trick is to get LEAN red meat, and advisable only a couple times a week. Exercise and ditching the soda is a great way to get on your journey for a healthier new you:-)

SUSANSTAMEY - Welcome. I found this site by googling Nutritional contents on various foods. I found the Tracker here and that was it - hook, line and sinker :-) When you joined this site, by giving all your details re weight, amount of exercise, etc. you will have been given a calorie range. Make sure that you stay within this range MOST of the time. SP doesn't recommend under 1200 calories, and in fact, my own Dietitian told me they don't recommend under 1400 calories here UNLESS it is supervised by a qualified Dietitian or Dr, who also has a Dietetic qualification (not all Doctors do!)

MAMACLAUSEN - the good news is that this IS NOT A DIET :-) This is merely a healthy lifestyle. Allow one day per 2 weeks to eat whatever you want. It may seem strange but this isn't about deprivation, starvation etc. Your mind will know that it is going to get what it wants, but just at another time, so it reduced the risk of your binging or "cheating" - I practice what I preach and it works!

JAC1052 - you may find it difficult watching others eat whatever they want but stay skinny - but DO THEY STAY HEALTHY??? A lot of skinny people set themselves up for osteoporosis, amongst other things. They can still get really clogged arteries - look at the number of thin people who have heart attacks or strokes! It is far better to eat healthy and get the exercise and be slightly overweight!!

ROXIE789 - Welcome to you! and yes, this IS a positive group :-)

Gayge - hello to you. 40lb is doable by the end of the year, BUT rather than say I want to loose x amount of weight by then, why not say "I want to loose weight" That way if you hit a plateau (which a lot of people do) and you find it hard to reach that goal by then, then you won't be disappointed.

Doris - hello to you too :-) I like the idea of running a marathon - not for me, but it would have been a target when I was younger. I often ran 9 miles a night.

FOR THOSE OF YOU who haven't created a SparkPage, you will find that having one will make this journey a lot easier and more enjoyable - you will be able to make loads more friends and even get some goodies :-)

Kris

My name is Doris. Currently I am an unemployed nurse, cannot find a job. When I first became nurse I use to weigh 140, (4years ago) now I'm at 216. I cannot keep a diet bcuz I always sabotage myself. I have started going to the gym, I wish to run a marathon. But at times I feel like failure and want to quit the gym also.
I am really glad that I found a forum of people who have about my same weight. All the ones I found people were already skinny. I have an iPhone which I use the apps nexercise, c25k, and lolo beats it helps out for the working out.

Hello, My name is Jaclyn. I am married with four boys...no girls, so it is hard for me to eat the way I know I should when I watch everybody else eat what they want and stay skinny. UGH!! I typically have success for about a week and then I begin to "cheat" and it is all downhill from there. But I am not ready to give up, I want to fight the good fight.

Hi. This is my second day on my diet and the first day joining sparkpeople. I'm married with a beautiful 2 year old daughter, and I'm a classically trained singer and conductor. I'm taking my exercising gently and slowly because whenever I've started in the past, I get sick and can't get out of bed. I'm excited to be in a group with new dieters so we can share the journey. I hope I can be a good support to all of you!

My biggest weakness is that, whether it is planned or not, if I cheat on the diet I can't seem to go back to the straight and narrow. So, for me, I'm going to stick to it all the way until I can learn to control cravings, etc.

Good luck everyone!

New to Sparkpeople. Found this site by browsing for 1200 calorie meal planners and saw good things about this site. Hard to believe I am 50 years only and just now learning about nutrition but I intend to hand down my knowledge to my grandchildren and children and save them from having to wait until my age to figure it all out. I am a member of Fitness Connection gym in Raleigh NC and am there 3-5 times a week now and I want to exercise each day so that is my goal

Hi Everyone! I just joined SparkPeople today! I actually stumbled upon this website after doing some workouts that were posted on YouTube (Coach Nicole's seated upper body workout to be exact). I have been battling my weight since my teenage years. The highest weight I reached was 250 lbs - during my first semester of pastry school. Shortly after my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I have always been a very emotional eater. When I am depressed I eat aIl kinds of sweets. There have also been times I caught myself eating and I wasn't even hungry - I was just eating out of boredom! I am currently at 236 lbs. I have been working out consistently now for about two weeks. I am in love with the way that exercise is making me feel - very empowered emotionally and physically. I am avoiding soda and red meat. I am between a size 18/20. My ultimate goal is to get down to a size 8 by May 14 of next year when I turn 32.

Hi! First day, first post. I'm from Indiana and never had trouble with my weight when I was younger. After two kids and a 40th birthday I started gaining and haven't been able to control it. I'm getting more motivated now that I am seeing the more negative effects (like not being able to walk as far or as fast as co-workers...).

Carrie - IF you find it rather daunting to have 180lb as a goal, then perhaps making the goal in smaller increments - say 10 or 20lb - may be easier for you. Some people respond better that way - for me, it didn't matter, just as long as I lost weight.

Hi Jessica - welcome to you, and welcome to your new occupational journey in life. It is rather exciting to see new life come into this world :-) Make sure that you get plenty of walks in because the fresh air and daylight will help to blow the cobwebs away just as much as helping to blow that extra weight off :-)

Liz - welcome back!

Eva - Hi! I kinda strongly suspect that with your change to vegetarianism, AND the way you describe it, you are very high on carbs and not much protein! Ensure that you get plenty of protein via lentils, dried peas and things like baked beans, tofu, cottage cheese, and nuts - the latter providing lots of very healthy fats, too!

Penny - welcome back! You have come back, so obviously you know that by following the healthy lifestyle plan, you WILL succeed in your goal. You KNOW that you have everything here right at your fingertips to help you to achieve that :-)

Kris

Hi,
I'm Eva. I'm 30 and a writer/attorney in LA. I am getting back into running (I was up to 4 miles last summer) and also tracking my food-- which worked in the past until I STOPPED doing it! Ugh! Consistency is the thing I struggle with most. I have a desk job and hate to cook-- a combination that leads to bad habits and bad health. I am a vegetarian (after watching Forks Over Knives and a few other documentaries -- essentially because I'm an animal lover, no judgment, just I can't eat meat anymore) but that has led me to eat more bread and not more vegetables-- not exactly what I intended when I made the switch! So, instead of losing weight, I'm about the same/slowly gaining. I suffer from anxiety issues, teeth grinding, and other stress related health issues (high blood pressure) that exercise really helps with, so I just want to get into a healthy routine and go from there.

I live with my boyfriend (who is very active, he's an amateur cyclist!) and my dog- Emily, a little rat terrier/chihuahua rescue). No kids. My family lives in NH (where I am from originally) and my brother is serving in Afghanistan right now (the baby of the family). I'm planning to run the new Nike Women's 1/2 Marathon in D.C. next spring!

Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things." "I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

Nicole - I hope that you take time out for yourself, it seems like you are very busy. I am wondering if you tried "DIETING" - that in itself is going to set you up for failure. Diets are generally too restrictive, get boring and leaving us feeling deprived. This is merely a healthy lifestyle - it is about gradual changes, introduced on or two things at a time, and allowing your mind/body to get used to them before adding something else to the mix. Using the Nutrition Tracker is a marvelous way of staying focused and also allows us to tweak our nutritional intake to ensure that it is a healthy mix of carbs/fats/protein. You will find that this site is a very safe - if you go to your various teams and keep in regular contact on the message boards you will get loads of support and you will be able to share/vent to your heart's content.

Heather - the same applies to you re "diets" - and as this isn't one, it is FANTASTIC :-) Yo-yoing with weight isn't particularly healthy, but then you obviously realize this already. Please DO NOT do diet pills. They do NOT work! You loose the weight, but you don't learn about healthy eating or exercise - you don't learn about balance, and THESE are the reasons why this programme of a Healthy Lifestyle is advisable. It should last you the rest of your life! Just play with the site for a while to get used to where everything is. You won't get lost. Play with the Nutrition Tracker. In time you will be an old hat at it - LOL Don't go aiming for a fast weight loss - it will go back on just as quickly, after! The slow ones are the best - they are more inclined to stay off, and it is healthier for our bodies, that way, too.

Lana - Can I ask where in Europe you are from? I'm from New Zealand. I am sure that you will make good use of this site :-) Good for you doing something about your weight now before it gets worse. I'm glad that your boyfriend is support - that can make a lot of difference.

Sara - welcome back! I used to have heaps of cats, too. We now have just 2 and a dog who thinks she is a person. Some exercise ideas while at your computer. Walking on the spot (while sitting) side bends, arm circles. They all help with burning calories, and at the same time help prevent circulatory problems. Can you get up and walk to the Water cooler on a regular basis (extra mobilization and extra water which is strongly advised re good, calorie free hydration.) When you are at home you can find ways of extra mobilization while doing housework. I put all of my laundry and groceries away one at a time. This creates quite a bit of walking for me, and the beauty is, not only does it not seem like work, it also doesn't seem like exercise - LOL! I suggest that you think carefully about having a goal date to lose x amount of weight. I would be more inclined to make the goal "I WILL have lost weight" then there is no disappointment.

BRITTERSM - Welcome back. Have you thought about keeping a diary? They can be a marvelous tool, and by having one you MAY find why you keep falling off the wagon! If you find it hard to do that, then perhaps talking with your Dr about it and asking for a referral to a Therapist could be beneficial.

Hi, I've used this site with success in the past, and I'm hoping it works again! I'm Sara, and I live in Wisconsin. I live with my significant other, his two kids (girl almost 16 and boy 11), and 7 cats. I work full time in customer service, so I sit at a desk and do computer work all day long. I also am about a year away from finishing my MBA, so when I'm not working, I'm studying on my computer. I need a way to get my exercise in while spending so much time in front of a screen :) I've set a goal date of May 1, 2013, which will be a few weeks before my graduation. I'm looking forward to working with you all.

Hey everyone, I'm Lana, from a small country in Europe. I just joined because I give up too easily and I'm hoping to change that here! I'm 24, 5'9" and I've packed on 44lbs in the last 3 years, the highest being 187lbs. I'm just trying to have an active lifestyle again and loosing weight is a must because of my knee problems, every pound makes a difference.
I live with 3 cats and my boyfriend. He's very supportive, but being skinny all his life, he just doesn't get it :P So I look forward to sharing our progress!

Hello, My name is Nicole. I have two wonderful kids 10 and 5. They are a handful, but they are my life. I currently go to school and work part time. I have tried to lose weight so many times in the past, and I'll lose 10 or so then gain double that back. Last night I was watching the show, I use to be fat on MTV. Something told me to go weigh my self, and I was surprised that I'm now up to 277. I have to take the steps to change my life, I hope this is a great place to begin. I have a wondeful boyfriend that supports me in anything I do. But there are things that Im just to embaressed to dicuss with him, and my weight so one of them.

I wake up every day with the realization that this is it, that there's only one shot at this life and I can either enjoy the ride and live it to its fullest and to my highest potential or I can stay the way I am.- I love this quote

Hi Marina - welcome. I found that this site has everything that we need to reach our goals, and the beauty, as you have found out, is that it is FREE!! We can't argue with that :-)

I am sure that when your daughter no longer needs home-schooling, you will find plenty to utilize your time. We often think we won't be able to fill that void, but it does happen and often we don't even notice it - LOL! Congrat's on your daughter's marriage. I'm sorry that she moved away, tho'! My daughter lives within 15 minutes drive of me, and I often see her when I get my groceries - she lives in the town where the supermarket is.

You will find that if you create a SparkPage you will get loads more support from this site, AND it enables us to give you a SparkGoodie as well, and they are always fun to receive :-)

Take care,
Kris

Hi I'm Marina. Just found this site and I love all the helpful tools. I am actually paying for a similar service through my weight loss program which I can stop using now-yea! I've already lost about 50lbs, just need to lose about 10 more! But of course they seem the hardest! I've been married 30 years and our eldest daughter just got married and moved away last month, I really miss her. My 21yr old son is in college and my 18 yr old son graduates high school in May. My 15yr old daughter is still homeschooling with me, in 3 yrs I'll have worked myself out of a job! I look forward to using this site.

Hi, I am gigalena, (Angela) your other leader of the team. I have been on Sparks since 1/25/2008 It had been a long road but I am still driving. I am married three grown children who I miss so much. We live in different states. We are the guardian to my great niece. We are also foster parents. If there is any thing I can do to help you in your journey please just ask. I am here for you. Sparks has been my lifesaver for real. I don't know where I would be with out it. It has so much to offer. You are going to love it. Just take it slow so you don't get overwhelmed. We are here for you.

Looking forward to getting to know each of you.
Hugs
Angela

Welcome to SparkPeople - we hope that your time here with us is very enjoyable and also very productive in that you reach whatever your goals are, and that you have fun and find friendship on the way!

My name is Kris (SLIMMERKIWI) and am a co-leader of this team, along with Angela (GIGALENA). I live in NZ, north of Auckland, am married and have 2 grown children and 2 grandsons. I have been on SP since June 2007. I have managed to reach my goal weight altho' I DID have the help of a Dietitian to do so. My other 'secret weapon' was/is weighing all of my food and using the Nutrition Tracker on SP. That REALLY helps us to stay on track and to tweak our nutritional intake as and when necessary.

We wish you well in achieving your goals and making loads of new friends on the way.

Kris
