Hello there, I am 41 years old and attempting to lose weight after being sedentary for 23 years. I've tried to loose weight before but it is difficult to do that when you can't walk. You see, when I was a teenager I developed Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis. Over the years it gradually progressed into Chondrolysis (a deteriorating bone disease) which by the time I was 35 had turned into to Avascular Necrosis (Bone Death). My physicians refused to perform surgery because of my age and treated my condition with steroids and pain relievers which caused other medical complications. Thanksgiving week of 2013 I finally underwent a surgical procedure during which I received metal replacements. Although the doctors said it would take up to a year in a half to heal completely, I must loose weight in order to increase the longevity of the new prosthesis. So, here I am.

8/12/14 Update - If your looking for a Spark Buddy in your area , feel free to add me.

Hi all. My name is Patti, I am 47 years old, and I live in Central Hernando County. I have been a member of Sparkpeople for several years. I have not had any lasting success, and while it is understandable with the difficulties I have faced, there is no good excuse. In the past five years, I left an abusive 27 year marriage, started College, lost two children, completed my Bachelor's degree, bought a house, and gotten remarried. I am currently an ESE paraprofessional at Central High School and a residential associate for the ARC Nature Coast. I hope to have a teaching position before school starts in August. My husband and I enjoy the Suncoast Trail and have the yearlong parking passes. I am laid up right now after a surgery on July 2, but hope to be up and moving again in two weeks. I need to lose weight before another surgery to have two hernias repaired. The less belly fat, the safer surgery will be. My three surviving daughters, one son-in-law, and four of my grandchildren live with us, while the fifth lives in Weeki Wachee with his dad.

Hi, I have lived in Hernando County since 1971. I retired early June 2011 after teaching 42 years. I don't miss it now, and am enjoying retirement immensely. I have told a lot about myself on my Spark page and blogs. But that's a lot to wade through, so, you're welcome to ask if there's something you'd like to know.

I had searched for a "city" team back in July but didn't find you guys. Only Tampa and St. Pete came up.

I live near the trail that follows along the Suncoast Parkway. I used to live right on it and walked every afternoon. I have found the spots to park now where I don't have to spend the $3.00 parking fee everytime I want to walk over there.

So that is something we could do on a weekend or holiday. Meet and walk or bike, then eat a picnic lunch. I know there is one picnic table at the parking area at US 50.

Or we could meet at a park on the coast. And walk.

Anyone interested in something like that on a holiday, or say once a month on a Saturday? We'd work it out so that the only cost would be to get to the place and figure out the food. We could simply bring our own water and sack snacks and lunch, or plan to bring pot luck.

Is anyone interested in doing something like that?

Hi everyone, My name is Ron. I have been in Pasco county (New Port Richey ) just a little over a year now. Since I retired from the Navy I have been battling some weight gain. It is time to take back my life and drop the pounds I need and stay active. I have a 6 month old grandson that I want to see grow up. So if anyone is in the area and is looking for a workout buddy let me know.My schedule is flexible right now, until I complete my Guardian Ad Litem training and start working with the kids....See ya around...

Hi Tazlover,

Welcome to the group. Everyone is different, but don't be surprised if you slow down your weight loss as you ramp up fitness. You're building up muscle and it weighs more than fat. I've been in that cycle right now. If I just concentrate on my nutrition, then I lose weight. If I add the fitness, then I slow it down (for now) and sometimes don't lose anything. When I start feeling frustrated I measure myself with a tape measure so I can then see inches lost. It helps me stay with it. The scale isn't the only measurement of success :)

Hi there, I live in Port Richey and am really on this healthy kick. I have been using slim fast for about 3-4 months now and lost over 30 pounds, so now I am putting in the exercise as well. I just recently went out hiking with the family and played some raquetball. I also found a stationary bike on clearance and have been using that. I really want to be healthier the right way. Even taking walks helps to burn calories. It's nice to meet everyone and I hope that we are all able to achieve our goals and can continue to support eachother in this.

Hi Cynedra :)

Welcome to the group. You haven't seen it before because I just created it a few weeks ago. I felt we needed something local and since I didn't see any other team for us out there I made one. St. Pete and Tampa are just too far for me to participate with a team.

I'm all for using what we have. I have a Wii, and use the Wii fit and Just Dance Wii games to exercise with, and when I need to work on my core I use cans instead of dumbbells (because I have cans, but no "traditional" weights). We are looking into getting bikes for Christmas so we can go on family bike rides and try to use them instead of the car for short trips. I have most of the kids on board for that. I might have to sweeten the pot to get them all on board for that, lol. I'm all for walking, too (no gas, no equipment = easy start up exercise). Oh, and the weather here is getting just about right for that, too :)

Hi - I hadn't noticed this team before. I live in one of the counties. Mom of two boys, who are currently suffering major sugar highs from Halloween candy. Yes, I am actually let them eat it. If it ends up on the floor, its trash though. I'm in my 40s and currently a SAHM, hoping that when Son #2 starts full time school in September 2012, I can find some gainful employment that won't prevent me from still taking part in their lives. Hoping that I can lose some weight before that time so potential employers won't see me as a threat to their health insurance rates. One of our family's favorite activities in bike riding on the Withlacoochee State Trail. I pull the boys in a trailer, although son 1 now can ride his two wheeler and is getting faster.

It sounds crude to say but we don't have any extra money so any activities that cost any money will not be attended to by us, especially until after the holidays. I only bring it up because so many of the teams think that everyone can just go buy this or that. Have not seen any suggestions of that here, thank goodness.

My Goals: 10% at a time.

Hi, I'm a mom of four amazing kids. I live in Hernando County and I am a USF student studying Elementary Education.

I am on a mission to be healthier, and if some (or a lot of) weight falls off along the way I will certainly not miss it. In fact, I am looking forward to it.

When my life settles down a bit I hope to coordinate walks, wii dance parties, and other events for the group. Feel free to coordinate them here as well. I started this team because I felt we needed representation in our neck of the woods. Anyone with lots of drive and time who would like to help lead the group, please message me or reply here. I welcome the help :)
