Hi.... I am going to be 47 soon, and almost 3 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer... I had lumpectomies/ chemo/ radiation. I am taking Tamoxifen which made me gain 25 lbs over the past two + years, and I was already unhappy with my weight.

I am clear right now as far as checkups, so that makes me very happy.

Now I am trying to get my eating habits under control. I have a number of bad habits to modify, like a bagel egg and cheese at dunkin every morning on the way to work, and too many glasses of wine while I cook dinner every night at home (and also the accompanying snacks...)

I used the weight watchers iphone app for a year and a half, but only counted points here and there because whenever my points got too high I gave up. So my first goal is to just keep entering everything I eat honestly and learn where I am consuming too many calories. I already have noticed that I don't eat the amount of protein that this website recommends, and I knew I eat/drink way tooooo many carbs.

I have not been a regular exerciser and that's the second thing I plan to change.

I joined on the 15th and I have lost 2 lbs already. I would like to lose about 30 in total by next june when my daughter graduates high school! I don't want to cringe at the photos!!!

I am Mary Caroline most people call me Shoes. When I joined Sparks I was a 40 years old special education teacher. After joining Sparks I gave up the golden arches, and soft drinks.

I ran my first five K at age 41. However, despite all my fitness efforts and weight loss efforts I was over weight. Long term use of the same prescription medication was leading to toxicity despite careful monitoring. Toxicity had begun to manifesting itself through endocrine system failure and body wide pitting edema.

When I was 42 I retired due to health ~ weighing my heaviest.
Aggressive Steroid therapy for Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) had finally caught up with my body. The corticosteroid medications had reduced my calcium absorption, impaired my vitamin D metabolism and turned me into an nocturnal insomniac. I returned to Sparks basically a member at large that was simply trying to survive.

Now I am 43 and the healthiest I have been in a long time. I haven't eaten at the arches or drank a soda in years. I don't eat chicken, pig, lamb, cow, lobster, deer, or turkey. I do eat fish, cheese, and drink milk.

God has blessed me. I am down 45 pounds from my top on scale numbers and I am ready for the next step. Lets make lemon-aid without Splenda... Oh --- I gave up Splenda too!!

In the last month I have lost my Grandmother, my uncle, my neighbor of 40 years and a lady from my church.

My best friend a stage 4 breast cancer survivor. She will have surgery in morning following 8 weeks of chemo for Cervical Cancer.

I will do the best I can to support this team... bare with me!

Hello everyone,
I am so sorry to hear about members who have/ had cancer, as well as their family members who have/ had, or have been lost due to cancer.
I personally had cervical cancer a few years ago, and so far I have been in recession. I lost my father last year (he was 60) to colo-rectal cancer that had spread, or metastasised, to his liver and bones.
There is a better way to live, and I know there will be a cure to this disease. Together as a community we can help each other spiritually, and help to find a cure.
Take care everyone, and don't let this disease beat you!!!!

Hi,

I am the first member of my family to have been diagnosed with cancer. The last week in February I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. I am very weight and have asthma and heart disease so I was referred to the University Hospital which is the only tertiary care hospital in our state. I live in Iowa. So, I got an appointment at the University on March 21. It was not a good appointment because the surgeon told me he thought I would die during the surgery but he would send me through to CAT SCAN and Internal MED to see how the team would feel about me having surgery.

So, on March 26 I drove 90 miles again that is 180 miles round trip to have a cat scan and meet with two doctors in internal med. The two appointments were a lot more encouraging than the first appointment in the oncology department. The CAT SCAN was hurry up to wait. The Internal Med was an excellent appointment where I met with the two physicians and felt like I was a team member discussing my treatment which did not happen in oncology department. I felt so much better. My weight was down 10 pounds from the previous week which was also very encouraging. They said I was a medium risk for surgery but they wanted an OK from my Cardiologist in Waterloo. They called him and he said, yep, I could have the surgery. So, that's a good thing.

Now, my next appointment is April 4th with the surgeon, radiologist and anesthesiologist in the oncology center again. Hope all goes better.

Besides having a new diagnosis of cancer I'm a 61 year old semi-retired social worker who does counseling for people with disabilities or who are substance abusers. I'm single and have no children. I live in an apartment building. Have great friends and like to swim and water walk daily.

Hi all, I am new to the group!
I have had several of my mom's friends pass from Breast Cancer, or complications from Breast Cancer. My grandfather had emphyzema and passed when I was 8. My MIL is a Breast Cancer survivor
I have run in 2 Races for the Cure, and walked in the 3 Day last year. This year I raised money, but didn't get a chance to walk. I raised almost $8000 in the last 2 years for Komen.
In Fall of 2012 I will run a half marathon to raise money for Komen :)
Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hi,
My name is Tiffany. I am new to the group. Thanks for the invite Dream Catcher. I found it through your sparkpage. Glad to be here. My mom & sister are cancer suvivours. I'm a 36 year old (but staying at 28 emoticon ) Canadian living in CA. My husband immigrated my dog Simba & I here in 2004. After a year of two of being married I gained like 30 pounds in a year. I can not get it off. I found out I have a thyroid problem. I'm on medication & I exercise regularly & ate well until I lost my unemployment in December. I had been unemployed since 2008 & could not find anything. I was trying everything even pizza hut who told me I was not qualified. I just started working. I am babysitting 2 wonderful children for 2 hours a day & sometimes more. It works well w/ my school schedule & it helps out, plus I am finally qualified to get a grant. Things are so expensive out here. My husband made too much before taxes to get any help. If it was after taxes we could have got government assistant. They should raise it in CA. $26,000 is not enough for two people to live off out here for a year. Anyway, I have been going to school for 6 years now to get a degree in CIT Administrative Assistant. I will finally be done in June 2012. This semester I am taking 2 dance classes & two gym classes along w/ English & Sign Language. hoping I will finally shed these extra pounds, plus they helped me get the grant. You have to take 12 units which is full time to get a grant. Then last week as I was walking the 5 year old to the car after picking him up from school klutzy me took a nasty fall & sprained my ankle. So that puts my physical activity classes on hold until it heals. emoticon I read on google that it would take about 3 days. It has been more. I hope it will be better by next week. I miss my dance classes. Thanks again for the invite. Glad to be here.

First I would like to say "Hi" to everyone and to thank DREAMCATCHER64 for asking me to join in. I'm going to try and make this short and sweet!! Also my name is Barb and I live in a city just north of Toronto, Ontario Canada.
My journey began Dec 3, 2006. I went in to emerg with what I thought was some type of blockage from constipation. The triage nurse even suggested that I go to a drugstore and get something for constipation. After 5 hours of sitting there I was double guessing as to whether I should be there or not. My DH said that we weren't leaving and to ignore the nurse. And I've never been so glad that I listened to him!! We waited another 2 hours.
I had surgery the next day for the blockage and it turned out to be cancer. The cancer had also spread to my liver and my lung. The Dr was blunt and to the point which is ok but had a negative undertone. I have FAP - at puberty polyps start to develop in your large intestine and once you are past your thirties they will turn cancerous.
Started chemo Feb 2007 to Aug 2007 and had radiation in the middle 6 weeks x 5 days.
March 2008 had my liver resected by an amazing surgeon - top in his field and extremely personable. Good prognosis 80% chance that it will never return.
Tried to get my large intestine removed....was told by the original surgeon and the first specialist I saw that there was no use in doing that operation seeing as I was just going to die. Sweet people hahaha. I was hooked up with a third specialist who kept putting me on hold. I had chemo June to Dec 2009 - really hard on and lost all my hair...was told that I looked really good bald and should stay that way - it was a lot easier getting ready to go LOL!! This was to see if the spots in my lung would change. They didn't. I had lung surgery Feb 2010 and my lungs were clear no cancer!! Yippee!! I finally got my large intestine removed April 2010.
I now am on chemo again for 1 to 2 years but a very mild one. I have developed a desmoid tumor (10% of the people with FAP develop them) - it isn't cancerous but it will just keep growing and will squeeze out your organs and mine is growing abnormally fast.
The one good thing about having a rare form of cancer is that I have a top team of specialists!!
One of my daughters has FAP as well and is clear so far. She has had her large intestine removed at age 20 and has to have scopes every year. Which is good.
Looking forward to hearing from everyone. Keep your chin up and enjoy life!!

Welcome, Kat! I am so glad to hear that the first nodes have managed to block the spread of the cancer. That is very strange that you discovered the cancer yourself, but I am glad you did! I wish you all the best as you continue your treatment. Please let us know if/how we can support you. emoticon

hello, all! :-)
it is good to be here! Thank you so much for the invite!!!
I am Kat, 52 this August, just finished chemo for breast cancer. I was diagnosed stage three ductal carcinoma with spread to the first lymph nodes last february. So far, I have been lucky as the first nodes managed to block that spread- Clear CT and bone scan, so hopes are high. It's ironic for me, as I ran the mammo screening prograsm at the hospital where I work, and then discovered it in myself! I am now awaiting to start radiotherapy, and then monthly Herceptin..Hot flushes and all doing my head in too!
Looking forward to meeting you all here and having a blast!

I too would like to thank DREAMCATCHER64 for the invitation to join this team. You can never have to much support when you are dealing with cancer. I am a 44 year old mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer (stage 4). I have had one round of treatment and have already lost my hair. After I finish my scheduled rounds of treatments, I am scheduled for surgery (double mastectomy). What keeps me going -- My faith in God

Hello

I got an invite to this team so here I am. I am a 37 year old single work at home mom in Texas. My stepdad (the man who raised me since age 6 and I call dad) passed away Aug 3 from cancer. He fought a long and hard battle and at the age of 52 he left us to be pain free from this disease. We are still coping, my mom, brother and I alone with my son. I hope and pray that some day we can find a cure!

I am honored to be a part of this team!!! emoticon Thanks for the invitation!! Cancer is that terrible word that somehow affects us ALL (unfortunately)!! emoticon
My name is Cheryn and I am 47. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1999(I was 35). I had my thyroid removed and radiation followed. Did great since then.......
Then last year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS stage 3). Having 3 areas on my left breast that needed attention, I opted for a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I still had to go thru radiation and am now on Tamoxifen........Oh well......I still have life!!! emoticon
I work as a Mammogram Tech so know the medical field way more than I need to!!! Cancer is one of lifes bummers, and sadly affects us all one way or another.
A positive attitude, a goal, a daily smile, and making a difference in someone elses life is what keeps me going..... emoticon
Glad to be a part of this team!!!

I am so thankful to Dreamcatcher for inviting me to this team, and thank her for starting the team. It is so encouraging to hear people report their successful journeys with cancer. I truly trust God and believe He is in control, however, the big C it is always in the back of my mind. My sister and I both have had breast cancer, and hers reoccurred 4 years later.

Looking forward to getting to know you all better!

I'm Maggie and I'm not a cancer survivor. My late husband bravely battled Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma for three years. He lost his battle in January '10. I have since taken up his fight and have become very active with the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society here in the Bay Area. I have done several Relay For Life and I am currently training for the Wildflower Tri, which the proceeds go to Leukemia/Lymphoma research.

I do all that I can to help find a cure and pay it forward to those who helped me and my DH during a very dark time.

Welcome everyone! I am not a cancer survivor, I am the wife of a dear man currently in the hospital having chemo for Burkitt Lymphoma - an aggressive and rare nasty cancer (not that any of them are nice). This is round 2 of 3. I am hoping the chemo will be over by mid-October and he will also be cancer free.

I think this will be a great group. Thank you Dreamcatcher64 for starting this group!

Hi team... thanks for the invite to this team! I'm MarilynC. I live in a rural north FL town (where apparently only cows-pigs-goats contribute to the population explosion emoticon ) with my DH (who is enjoying his 2nd retirement, don't worry I can keep him plenty busy!). We are the parents of 5 children (do their spouses count if we feed them??), 14 grands, 2 gr-grands & 2 fur babies. Thankfully, at this point we are down to only 2 dependent furbabies still living at home--- a MaineCoon kitty girl & a Shelty doggy girl.

I was diag.with Kidney cancer in 2003, Stage 3 by size (7#), surgically removed intact (1st God gift)... kidney, lymph nodes & adrenal gland gone with one scoop (lymph nodes & adrenal gland were neg. for cancer cells). 25 rad. trmts. to abdo/pelvis (protocol due to kidney outer wall only 1 paper thickness). Yearly CTs' & Bone Scans x 5 yrs. emoticon 2003 marks a long year that ends as a SURVIVOR (2nd God gift).

Fast forward to June 2010.... I can't breathe (over less then 1 mo I went from breathing normally to walking only 5ft without resting) . ER team drained 3 qts of fld. (bld + protein = suspicion of cancer... please note sm. letters... God is still in control,). The day came for my big LOTTO... 2 docs for lung cancer, 3 docs for lymph cancer & 1 patient saying kidney cancer...BINGO, I win ( no multiple choice to treat). At first I was angry with God for not keeping His promise to "cure" me ... but that was my translation... I now know that He heals us just for the "present" (however long that is on His time schedule) and while I don't always know the "why" questions, I do Know that His plans and timing are always perfect!!

Kidney cancer is not curable, but it is treatable with oral chemo (FOREVER...28days on, then 14days off... make no mistake, ALL forms of chemo are Beastly Ugly!!). YES I am a SURVIVOR but not by anything I could or can ever do... it is dependent on my Fathers' grace and mercy.

Mantra for this journey (and it is a journey).... CANCER is a WORD, not a SENTENCE.

MarilynC.

Gods' will & timing are perfect!

Thanks for the invite. Today is actually my 3 year anniversary of being cancer free. I am a breast cancer survivor. I was originally diagnosed on July 3, 2008. I was actually very lucky that they caught it as early as they did.It wasn't a lump, but instead, some cells. But it had already spread into my lymph nodes, so I had 11 of them removed. I had 7 surgeries, 14 months of chemotherapy, and 6 weeks of radiation. Now I'm working on losing weight and getting my strength back. I'm proud to report that I can now do 25 push-ups, whereas a year ago I couldn't even do one.

Hi. I'm Deborah, and I'm a colorectal cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in 2000 when I 45. I had surgery, of course, and the 6 weeks of radiation. I did 10 days of 5FU chemotherapy fanny-pack, but it turns out I was allergic (arterial heart spasms) and, at that time, there was no other chemo they could give me. I had a permanent ostomy, complete hysterectomy and appendectomy as a result of the surgery. After what I call a "miracle", loving hubby and friends, and a wonderful surgeon and doctor, today I am just fine. Glad to be a part of this team, but really sorry that we have to have such teams at all. Waiting for the day when there will be no need....no cancer!!

Love to all,
Deb

Hello everyone. My name is Julie. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (breast cancer) on May 28, 2010. I was 28 going on 29 years old then. I have gone through surgery, chemo, and radiation, and am currently taking Tamoxifen and the cancer is in remission. I will have to take the medication for 5 years. I am not a year out from active treatment yet, but I have turned 30, am still struggling with some fatigue issues (which are partially caused by the Tamoxifen along with some other lovely side effects), and I also have lymphedema from my lymph nodes being removed during surgery. I need to make my arms stronger! I also know quite a few people who have passes away from or are currently fighting cancer, so I'm all for helping to kick cancer! :)

@ Carol - glad to hear you will be going there. Make sure you talk with Beth Roth. She is the dietician and exercise physiologist.

@ Nancy - make sure you check out the leukemia and lymphoma society - www.lls.org. - you find your chapter by zipcode.

If you are currently going through treatment - you should use the resources where you are being treated - i.e. the dietician. More and more oncologists are encouraging their patients to exercise because there is a lot of data to support the benefits of exercise and cancer including exercise during treatment. If you want to go to the library here is a book which might be beneficial for you www.amazon.com/Cancer-Fitness-Exerci

@ Carol - I hope the people where you are being treated have introduced you to the Gathering Place. www.touchedbycancer.org/ There is an east side office and a west side office. (If you are not in Cleveland that is an organization similar to The Welness Community or Gilda's place ... who as far as I know have merged but I don't know what their new name is).

My name is Jan - and I am not a survivor and I am from the Cleveland area (as well). However, for the past 7 years I have been involved with raising money for the leukemia and lymphoma society through their team in training program.

Workwise I also have some relation to cancer - and that is where I will leave it.

Lastly I am involved with a grass root organization called Spokes of hope - check out their website - and watch the video on the site spokesofhope.org

I am Nancy from AZ. My DH was diagnosed mid July with Burkitt Lymphoma. It is a rare, aggressive form of NH lymphoma. Cure rates are supposed to be good, but the chemo is very harsh. The first round was 17 days in the hospital. He is currently on round 2, day 11. There is one more round after this, and I am hoping they let him out for more than a week this time before throwing him back in. He was in very bad shape last night, and when I called him this morning, I don't think he even wanted to answer the phone.

Insurance is causing me grief and I am not sure what they will cover - with three sessions of inpatient chemo I am afraid our out of pocket costs will be horrendous. And I can't talk to him about it for fear of dragging him down further.

We have one daughter and 2 grandkids, one of whom has severe cerebral palsy, and unfortunately they live 2,000 miles away, so my support group here consists of co-workers and neighbors. I have a sister here, but that is a different story. DH's parents and brother are trying hard to fill in the gaps, but his parents are in their 70's and live several hours away. I guess I need a hand to hold and assurance that this will somehow all work out and life will get back to normal. Ten and a half weeks ago, the lymph nodes on his neck popped up. 73 days ago. How can everything change so fast? And he has spent 27 of those days in the hospital, with a minimum of 24 more to go. I hope we both survive this.

~Nancy

Hi! I am Linda from Georgia and I am a 1 1/2 year survivor of an aggressive/less common uterine cancer called MMMT. My DH had prostate cancer in the same year (pretty advanced) and is now a 2 year survivor. We lost our middle son to neuroblastoma at the age of 4 and that was 22 years ago. Hi, I am Connie from PA. Thank you for the invite to this team. I am a breast cancer survivor, 2 years in October. I had surgery, radiation and chemo and have 3 more years of Femara treatment. I'd like to think I kicked cancer's butt. emoticon

I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful 3 1/2 year old "furbabies" (kitties).

I look forward to making some good emoticon . Have a wonderful Labor Day!!!

I thank God for being in control of my life and know I can trust Him. Praise God!

I am Pam from MN, and I want to be healthy so if I do get a form of cancer I will be strong enough to beat it (and the cures).
I have lost my best friend to breast cancer, DH lost his mother to cancer, my sister-in-law just recently lost her father to cancer, my uncle died of prostrate cancer, and so many others.
Currently, my mom is recovering from thyroid cancer, my aunt is fighting a rare form of kidney cancer, and a family friend is back in chemo for recurring leukemia. The list goes on.
I don't believe we can rely on family history of cancer any longer as a predisposition. Cancer can come in so many forms and for so many reasons, it is scary.
All forms of cancer should have a cure!
I am all for kicking cancer in the butt!!
