Hi everyone. I'm new here and am really glad that I found this page. I turned 38 on Sunday and that was kind of my own wake up call that I want/need to shed some pounds. Thing is, it's not as easy for me as it used to be.
About 8 years ago I was diagnosed with a viral neuropathy and Parkinson's disease and I have been in a wheelchair ever since. I don't have the use of my lower extremities, so I am unable to walk or even to use my legs to do what some might consider "simple" leg exercises. It's hard to lose weight or even plan an exercise program when you are limited to working out your upper body. I do have a little machine that I can put my feet into and it will move my legs in the kind of motion as if I was riding a bike, but I have to be seated at just the right angle or my feet fall out of the slots. As for other exercise, I work out with my Wii and do my upper body workout with the Wii. The problem with that is that since I live by myself, I tend to lose the motivation to work out. I don't have any support here to encourage me to keep up with it. [Besides, working your upper body out with the Wii isn't really a great workout].
As for my diet, I admit that my eating habits are much better than they used to be. My breakfast typically consists of a glass of 1% milk at least and usually either a bowl of cereal, a cereal bar, or a package of granola or a breakfast trail mix. I usually do not eat lunch or any type of snack. Supper at night is usually not eaten [and usually not even prepared] until after 9:00 at night. The reasons for this are because I have a cat who is a terrible beggar and I cannot prepare or eat anything without him constantly jumping up on my lap and/or the counter that I'm trying to prepare things on [even though he knows better ... (= ] so it's much easier to just wait until he goes to bed at 9:00 AND my family comes over at 9:00 to help me out in the bathroom for the last time of the day and if I wait until after they've been here, I can just relax for the night once supper is done. Besides eating later at night and usually making something that's quick and easy, however, since I'm in the wheelchair, I find that some things are just too difficult for me to do. For example, I love pasta, but I cannot drain pasta without help. I really want to get out of the habit of "microwave, convenience foods".
I was really proud of myself last night because when I went to get a haircut I stopped at Subway on the way home and instead of getting a sub, I got a baby spinach and chicken breast salad with red wine vinegar and a dash of honey mustard. All I put on it was tomatoes and when I got home, I chopped up 1/2 of an apple and put that on it as well. It was very good! Plus the apple satisfied my sweet tooth.
I really want to lose weight, but I need some help and inspiration. I hope I can find that here.
