Welcome Yvonne Sounds like you have an excellent medical team Good especially on diet and fitness consults...Yeah!!! Keep us posted on how you are doing and I hope we can become more active in helping and encouraging each other

I think this diet has a lot of positives ...is so much easier to follow than many other attempts...They do let you sneak in some artificial sweeteners etc that are a real encouragement especially at first but the purists will gradually be able to give them up too. Right now, the weight and sodium issues are biggest for me so I m willing to use a little pretend sweet.

I am strong woman of faith and will be praying for your health and positive experience here.

Hi! My name is Yvonne and I was just put on medication for hypertension. I'm 46 years old, full time employee, wife, mom & lead a stress-filled life at home and at work like most people. I'm awaiting a call-back for an appointment with a dietician & fitness trainer. Meantime, I've been researching the DASH diet. I also found out from my lab results that I am pre-diabetic (just barely over the acceptable limits) and I will be having a sleep study done soon for apnea. 46 & falling apart I told my husband, LOL!!!

I'm looking forward to being a part of this team and participating/learning here!

Well, I don't have hypertension, but I have a bunch of diet-sensitive "issues" including high cholesterol. My significant other has diabetes, and this diet appears to address all of this stuff. PLUS, and this is the big draw at the moment, it's DOABLE!!! I keep trying these very restrictive diets and I just don't stick to them. So we'll give "healthy real life" a shot.

Hi, I am Janette. I am turning 54 yrs old. I joined SP last May at 170 lbs. I started to eat more whole foods, less processed and fast foods, and exercising a lot more. I have lost about 25 lbs now, I have just had my blood pressure medicine cut for the second time, so I am only on 1/4th a pill/5 mg since Monday. I also just started the Dash diet Monday per a suggestion from my drs ofc. I live in Escondido, CA.

Hi,
I have been on SP for the last 3 years but haven't really taken it seriously enough. A visit to my GP last year didn't help, because all my test results were great, despite being obese. I thought I could "get away with" my lifestyle.... I made a personal commitment to losing weight and over the last wee while I have lost 10 kg, but need to lose another 25 kgs. I went for an annual check up the other day and to my horror my BP was 153/88. It has never been a problem before. Nothing like a wake up call - I am 55 years old, and I am really motivated now to deal with this. I see you all mentioning the DASH diet but have never heard of it. Any advice you can offer will be devoured -- I want to avoid medication, lose this excess weight and be the healthy person I know is inside me!!!

I am Donna from St. Louis, MO.

I just found out I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Dr. Said I can get my blood pressure down with just diet. My cholesterol is really high not sure yet what he will want me to do. Until I go back I will work on my diet more.

I downloaded a Dash Diet book for my Nook today.

Any help I can get would be great.

Hello, I joined today mostly because I have tried to eat more healthily and have failed on my own. I have several health issues but am normal weight. I exercise regularly but only because I have a very active dog who takes me for long walks/jogs. emoticon

However, I don't eat enough fruit/vegetables and love sweets and cheese and crackers and on and on. Just want to do this finally and be as healthy as I can! Hopefully with some accountability I can get this done!

Hi Team, My name is Pam. I live in southern California and began the Dash diet on January 15th.
I have lost 11 lbs. and that is with several slips and adjustments to fit my life. I am thrilled with this I had knee replacement on September 30, 2013 and hadn't been able to exercise much for several years before that. I am now getting back into diet and exercise. I have a moderately active job so that helps.
I checked my blood pressure (at CVS) last week and it hadn't gone down at all. I found Dash just by googling best diets. I love it because I'm not doing a whole lot of counting but I am making a whole lot of choices. This diet is working better for me than any other I have been on and I only hope it lasts me the rest of my life.
Just yesterday I had the aha moment about how important it is to watch sodium so I will now be watching that.

Hi My name is Jolene. I went to the Dr. last wk and found out I had very high blood pressure and I am overweight. He put me on bp medicine. I want to lower my blood pressure to normal without having to take medicines as well as loose weight. A week before seeing the dr. I started exercising on my gazelle for 30 min. I would like to get to at least 1hr. per day exercising as well.
I want to be on the Dash diet because I think it is the best one for me.

Hi, my "real life" world knows me as Karen, and Auntie Karen. I have recently officially become a person with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and borderline "overweight". Well, really, I have eaten poorly, smoked, and avoided exercise most of my life, and now at age 69 I need to get with a healthier plan. I stopped drinking alcohol over 30 years ago, stopped smoking cigarettes over 15 years ago, and started trying to eat healthier about a year ago. I've lost about 20 pounds in 4 years and want to lose some more. And now, I want to lose the high blood pressure and the high cholesterol.

My doctor suggested DASH and it is not very different from what I've been wanting to do. I know that eating primarily lean proteins, and fruits and vegetables is best for me. I do not like to get hungry and so I know the protein is important. I am interested in sorting between those fruits and vegetables which are better.

I am so glad there is some support here for this effort.

Hi I'm sherry from Arizona. My hubby just had 3 stents put in his heart( clogged up artery) so now we are on a quest for better health for both of us.we are cooking the DASH way...hubby has lost 15 lbs in the that two weeks and me......not so good just about where I started. We ordered and have received the cook book but still awaiting the weight loss and the program book. Glad to know this team is here. Our b/ p are fine but the weight is waaaaayyyyyy up there. We have stopped the sodium and sodium laden foods and sauces, no animal fats, upped the plant based foods and lean meats. I need to track my foods for more accurate accountability. I'll feel better as soon as the other two DASH books arrive and I know better what to do. I was just winging it when hubby's Dr said ...sounds like your wife had you on the a DASH diet, great! We had to look up what the dash diet was! It's healthy that's what counts.

Good morning!! I just found you and that's exciting!!! I'm Elaine, live in Boynton Beach, Florida for the past 4 years since moving from Boston, MA where I lived all my life. I've been "playing" on Spark for about a year and have managed to lose about 35 pounds so far...but have at least 60 more to go. At the rate I'm going, who knows if I ever will but that's not the idea....I'm just happy to be losing and feeling good for a gal of 79. I can't believe that I'm not 16 any more. emoticon

Yes I'm a newbie. My name is Deb, I'm 54 from Wisconsin.
I have had 2 major surgeries within 9months. Hysterectomy August of 2011, and bladder surgery May of 2012, which I am still recovering from, she said it would take 2 yrs.
Anyway, I just want to get and be healthier and heard the dash is the way to go.
Dr. Oz agrees with it also, and who doesn't listen to OZ! lol
What is the concept of the dash?
I'm looking for a healthier me, and if dash can do it, I will be lifetime committed.
I see this is an active group, and that's another reason I'm here.

Hi, all, I'm Sandy and I've had my blood pressure go nearly sky high this year. I was controlling it until this year. My mother had a stroke in January and she had been in the hospital and then rehab three times this year. Before the last admission, a home health physical therapist suggested that she might have Parkinson's Disease. We finally got her diagnosed and on the correct medication. My sister and I also found an Assisted Living Facility nearby that she likes and we did, too. The stress of trying to take care of her had taken it's toll on me.
Four weeks ago, I fractured my knee and tore the ACL and meniscus. Because it happened when I grabbed some merchandise a thief was stealing, I lost my job. A lot of stress actually lifted, but being unemployed and unable to walk isn't helping. Went to the clinic(Workman's Comp) this morning for a recheck and I'm doing well, but my blood pressure is WAY TOO HIGH! I have to do something. I haven't been eating right and I haven't been getting any exercise. I have to take control, so here I am.

Our little world was turned upside down a couple of months ago when my oldest son, now 51, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. From smoking and it has metastasized to the brain.

And, my blood pressure went "off the chart" - so now am taking meds and am looking at the Dash diet. So glad i found this group - so may have lots of questions. I have found a number of good articles on the web - One article said to "drink your milk, eat your fruit and veggies, and go outside and play" - just like Mom used to tell us. So that is my goal. Eat more fruit and veggies and go outside and play in the dirt.

Just wanted to introduce myself. I live in Florida, widowed as of May, 2012. A different life for sure after being married almost 63 years. I will be 82 in August (not too far away), and have HBP. Hate taking pills. I am interested in this group and hoping to get some good information on how to reduce my blood pressure. I take 3 pills at night, and 3 pills in the morning. I know exercise is important, and I am going to the Silver Sneakers exercise class this morning. I used to go before DH got sick, and then I got away from it.

Have one wonderful, caring, loving Son and Daughter-in-Law, 2 Grandchildren, and 6 Great Grands.

Will check in later. Thanks for reading my newspaper. :)

The Dash Diet Action Plan by Marla Heller is a good book to check out. It has 28-days worth of meals already planned out for you (i.e. Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, and Dinner) and provides you with adjustments based on how many calories you need. (i.e. 2000, 1600, 1200).

I was with my Bridge Group the other night and the conversation turned to diets.

One of the members of the Group just so happens to be retired from a local university. She was a professor of nutrition. She commented that you can't go wrong with the DASH diet.

Her comment was good enough for me and I'm anxious to learn more.

One of the leaders (gardensforlife) added me as her friend. No one has ever done that before. Thank you.

Hi, I just joined Spark today and am just about to start my Dash diet. I have been reading and finding all the information I can about how to follow the diet. It's pretty easy except in all the cookbooks I found so far, none of the recipes list the food groups in the nutrition. I am looking for some recipes where you don't have to figure it out. They all list the nutrition in carbs, proteins and fat instead of how many grain serving, veg servings, etc. Does anyone know of a good easy to make recipe book that lists them this way? I just want easy everyday menus, nothing fancy or elaborate to cook. I am looking for an easy way to do this that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get the ingredients like some of the recipes I have seen. Or even a book that has daily menus to follow that are easy to prepare. I don't really like to cook as you can probably tell by now and I am in my 70's and prefer simple and quick meals to prepare. I am determined to follow this plan and so far am getting a little confused as to how to put menus and meals together. Any help from experienced Dashers will be much appreciated and I look forward to meeting all of you.

Hi All,
My name is Donna and I am very happy to find this Team.
I've been at SP for almost 2 months and just found out my blood pressure is quite high. I was in shock about it for a few days, then I got some good feedback from Spark friends and realized I am already on the right track.

I had already looked at the DASH diet then saw all the positive stuff about it here. Luckily I have been eating close to it, just have to incorporate more grains and make sure I'm getting the potassium.

Glad to be here!
