Good Morning. I am a stay at home mom who loves music and art. I play in some local orchestras for fun in my spare time. I have gained about 50 pounds in over 20 years and have 3 kids. It went on slowly and I just let it happen.
A few years ago I discovered the Dash diet. It helped me and my son lose 20 pounds. We got off of it and now he is gained 40 more. I am trying to help him (he is 17) but sometimes when I feel that I am solving the problem, I am also the one causing it. I am learning once again about the differences between weight loss myths and real weight loss solutions.
I hope to get some good advice and recipes from you all here and make some new friends.

Welcome to the team! I just got a little hand out on Dash from my doctor a few years ago. She didn't have me do any phases, but I had already cut stuff like that out for about a yr. And I had already dropped 30 lbs on my own. And she wanted me to add more grains, dairy, fruits and such back into my diet so that it would be more balanced.

I found some free info on the DASH diet online too after that.

Hi, I just started Dash too, because of High Blood Pressure and should have started long ago ... but i just got lazier and lazier and fatter and fatter....... now blood pressure and pre diabetic.

I got the book on Amazon for 5.00 plus postage. it was affordable. It has a gold cover and the tltle is the Dash diet for Weight Loss.

basically the first two weeks is lean meat and fish and vegetables but not potatoes. No bread or rice or pasta. of course goes without saying no sweets or sugary drinks.

because of my blood pressure i gave up coffee. I gave up coca cola too.

good luck to you. this diet and walking every day my blood pressure has gotten much lower . so thankful. now im trying to work on the pre diabeties.

Hi

I am new to the group but not to Sparkpeople.

I moved to a new city and went to a new cardiologist today and he said I should start the DASH diet as my blood pressure is high and losing weight will help. I've gained about 15 pounds in the last 6 months due to not exercising and will take his advice seriously.

Where do I start? Do I need to buy th DASH books?

Hello all! Started daily exercise and healthy eating in January. I am feeling healthier, but I know summer is just around the corner and that I need to get my sodium intake under control. I want to avoid another summer of swollen feet if I can! My nutrition tracker has made it clear that I need to find ways to reduce the amount of sodium I consume. I have stopped adding salt at the table. I am happy with losing the weight slowly, so my focus is to keep up what I'm doing but to zone in on changing my buying/cooking/baking habits in relation to salt to see if I can make a noticeable difference.

Prehypertension can be prevented emoticon if I take these steps:

NA If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.

emoticon emoticon Be moderately physically active on most days of the week.

emoticon emoticon Maintain a healthy weight.

emoticon emoticon Follow a healthy eating plan, which includes foods lower in sodium.

I had plantar fasciitis, and doing those tips really helped me. Now I just have to watch that in the summer my feet might swell up, and then I loosen my tennis shoes as wide as I can and don't worry about lacing them up to help with that. Go with sandals and flats that are wide and lose also helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I have been wearing an insert for my sneakers for a year. I have worn wide shoes for over a decade. I even tried going up a shoe size a year ago, before I went to the doctor, but got a blister. Not doing that again, lol. Thanks for the helpful tips.

IRISHGIRL74, Have they told you to switch to shoes with really good arch support and lots of cushioning padding? Also you might need to go to "Wide" shoes too instead of regular. It really helped me. Also avoid going barefoot on hard surfaces like cement, tile floors, wood floors.

You might want to see if that helps you at all.

Hi everyone. I've been on sparkpeople for a long time. But, I haven't been "good" with my eating and working out. Now that I'm getting back on plan with diet and working out. I have been told recently by my primary care doctor my blood pressure is high. I've been dealing with my feet hurting for a very long time. I was going to a podiatrist. Part of the issue has been the bone structure in my feet, but of course my weight doesn't help. I was going to rehab, and it helped some, but not enough. It didn't deal with the bp, I guess. A few weeks ago I went to primary care doc because I was in so much pain again, I couldn't stand it. I had already had my annual physical schedule for Monday, so she told me to get the blood work done. My feet feel better, but not 100%.

My doc told me about the dash diet. I figured I would incorporate it and use my sp trackers for food, water and workouts.

So, long story short, that's me.

I've been working hard to make positive changes in my life and I feel following the tenants of DASH will only enhance the changes I have begun. One of my goals is to be taken off high blood pressure medication and I realize to achieve that goal I am going to need help and support from others.

Making a new start here. Although I had very good results last year, the fall came and with it pounds creeped up. Now I am trying DASH Action plan. As a senior (72), I don't want to redo Phase 1. Cutting out food groups at the start is a bit much for me. I'm active with daily exercise, walking or gym -Silver Sneakers, and cutting out grains and fruit took too much energy. Now I'm trying to stay between 1200 and 1600 calories while tracking.
This team seems to be active and support is what it is about.

I've read some information about it and realized that I already follow most of what is recommended. Glad to have you on the team. I have had issues with my kidneys and liver in past due to diet and gallstones. Changing diet, and exercising more, and losing some weight really helped the issue.

I have hyperaldosteronism with benign tumors on my adrenal glands. I was recommended to follow this diet. High aldosterone levels cause high blood pressure. I have other health issues, as well.

Right now I eat out too much and my life is simply out of balance. Trying to find balance and routine. Not the greatest time to start. I ordered the book and cookbook and it should be here soon.

I am 66 (just turned on Nov 9), dear husband and two cats. I have a home business and no children. Never had the privilege of having kids. Lots of nieces and nephews! Dh is a few years younger and in law enforcement. He hopes to retire soon.

I am still waiting for the ultrasound to find out about the lump in my lung. A C.P.K. muscle blood test 3 weeks ago had a result of 570,Dr. said athletes are 500,normal is 200 and thought mine was high from exercise. I checked the internet yesterday and found out normal is 22-200. Ideal is 145 for women and 171 for men and 200 means more strength in the muscles. A low count means muscles are weak.Above 200 means damage to muscles from extreme exercise or exercises including my chronic kidney disease. My kidneys function at 50%.It means my blood is not replacing my muscles every 2-3 days like it is suppose too. This is what raises it by building up and causing damage. It says on the internet to see A Dr. immediately to fix it.The higher the number the more damage. So mine is damaged the same as a extreme athlete and is what causes constant pain in my legs. I will go back to the Dr..

I just joined this team today. I am over 60 and I am married to a very good man for many years now. I live in Ohio. I have two dogs. I am on Spark to loose weight and also improve my health issues, as much as I can. I have made a plan and some goals, that I am trying to stick to everyday. I am making this a life long commitment and working at my own pace. I exercise but not to much as I have very bad arthritis and other issues, I am also dealing with. I have been on here a little over 1 week and lost 3 lbs. already, and was grateful for that. I just hope I don't blow it, as I do not have good willpower. I am hanging in there and doing the best I can. I love listening to music and watching old movies and reading magazines etc.

I have chronic kidney disease, 50% kidney function and thought this might help. I have a blood clot in one lung and a lump in the other, so my blood pressure is only 75/55, sometimes lower and my hormones stopped producing red blood cells because of kidney disease , I have 59% red blood cells left. I was given a hormone shot for this. I was given Iron pills with hemoglobin for anemia and I am on blood thinners for my blood clot..I will find out in a month with a ultrasound what the lump is, it causes pain constantly,but,no pain from the clot.

New to the group. I live in Florida, am a Widow, and am 85 years young. I have HBP, Sciatic and osteoarthritis, I know if I would lose some weight it would be better for my bones also. Just had a Bone Density test and not good. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hello DASHers! My hubby and I have been using the DASH for Weight Loss since he had a health issue on Jan 19th. I got us started on the plan on Jan 21st. We have both yo-yo'd our way twoard a general downward trend in weight and feel great.

Here in mid-Michigan we are just now beginning to enjoy some foods from the garden. Zucchini's are keeping me challenged looking for new recipes. We have done very well with eating produce from the garden so far. In yers past we would grow green beans but not harvest them at the ideal time, so they were not appetizing. This year we are getting them at a great time.

Hubby had to have a medical test last week and he had to avoid foods with seeds. It was so hard to eat a salad without the six cherry tomatoes, but we hung in there. Happy to have them again!

I have no problem weighing and measuring just about everything. I try very hard to be consistent with accurate accounting for what we eat. As a self-pronounced sugar-holic, I have found that carbs are likely what put me on the path that we have been on. We have removed most of the pasta and rice from our diet. Sugar has been tougher to overcome for us. Fruit often makes my stomach feel ill, so that is not a good substitue for me. So, I do give in a little but am very conscientious about the quanitity I consume. I am trying to make DASH a lifestyle change, not just a weight-loss plan.

I look forward to hearing from the DASH group and different ways to incorporate healthful things to eat and enjoy.

New to this group... trying to find the right lifestyle changes for me. Have been on Weight Watchers forever, but not really seeing results. I love the DASH concept. Am also exploring low carb, but not sure that will work for me, because I love fresh fruit. Not a fan of really limiting any particular food group either. I have a LOOONG way to go --- I just need motivation and RESULTS :) :) :)

I have to say it is overwhelming. We just started yesterday. I have been searching on the web trying to find some info and my main ? is how much sodium each day? I have been tracking for two days and right now he is staying around 2000 a day. Is that too much? He has usually had two to three times that each day so I am hoping this helps.

Next ? is how long it took to make a difference?

We have more on our plate right now than usual, so this is not going to be easy.

Hi! My name is Michelle. I am married with no children, unless you count my two dogs. emoticon emoticon I love to read (I am a bookaholic!!) I also love dance (country western - I even teach a little) and ride motorcycles (I have two of my own.)

I have been a Spark member for years, but have not been tracking like I should. I need to get back to exercising on a consistent basis as well. I went to the doctor last week and had some tests which showed my blood pressure as a little high as well as my A1C. I don't want to be on medication so am going to try and lower both with food and exercise. My doctor told me about the DASH diet and encouraged me to try it. My mother is diabetic and has high blood pressure. She started giving herself insulin shots a couple years ago, and when I mentioned she could reverse that, she said she knew but would have to exercise and eat right, so she'd just give herself the shots. emoticon I don't want to end up like that and do ok eating, but need to do it better. So I'm hoping this group will have great ideas to help me. I've ordered a couple books on the DASH diet and am reading through them. I also am gluten intolerant, so am trying to work that in.

I have heard of the dash diet before. i like that it did not use gimmicks, or extreme chnanges. it does not seem strict, but it was more of a lifesytle that can be used for weight loss and also to be healthy long term..


After talking to my new doctor, he suggested the DASH diet becasue my blood pressure was a lot higher then my last physical.

I'm Vicki, 59 years old, and over 100 lbs. too heavy.
I don't expect to ever get my weight back down to under
198 lbs., but for now I'm working to get down to 225 lbs.
I've struggled with trying to find a plan I can live with
long term and I feel low fat is my best course of action.
I'm not a huge meat eater and I do love veggies & fruits,
so it makes sense to me, to work with the foods I enjoy
the most. Time will tell if I'm on the right course.
I'm not very active due to back issues so I'm not
able to get in a lot of exercise other than walking, and
some days it's hard to do even that. But I keep trying.

Hello Team, my name is Ann and I was at a new doctors on Thursday, blood pressure was up and I am already on meds. He gave me a print out with the name of "Dash Diet" to follow. I had been with my old doctor for almost 27 years and for the last 10+ no change of medications. This new doc, wants me back in three weeks to do a recheck and check my blood work.

Been doing the " surf the net thing" and thought of Spark. I have been a member for some time now but not active for about the last year. So I am back and have my head in the game once again!

I am open to any advice and web sites to check out. At this time I can't get the books, library trip will happen next week to see if they have any of the Dash books.

Watching salt intake also trying not to buy foods that have high fructose corn syrup, sugar, rice syrup, corn syrup, fructose, sucrose etc. in the first three ingredients.

No foods that have more than 3 ingredients that I can not pronounce.

If an item has more than 10 ingredients I put it on the Do Not Buy List as it is too processed.

I am recovering from a broken hip. I passed out at a meeting, fell to the floor, broke my hip and hurt my knee. I had been hit by a car when walking to the school bus when I was 16 years old- broke hips and knee. I have arthritis in many joints and my back. I am doing very well; however, recovery takes time and a lot of focus. Now that the weather is warmer, I am in less pain.

I just keep moving forward- sometimes it is slow but I still move forward.

Annie Simon how is it going on the Dash diet? I bought the basic The Dash Diet for Hypertension although I am hearing big praises for the weight loss version. It seems to be more for weight loss than lowering hypertension however. Maybe not...I am going to look into it since weight loss always helps your blood pressure. I am having trouble keeping up with all the food they recommend but it is mostly because I do not live a "normal" schedule. I have managed to eat a lot more vegetables/fruit but their website said to ease into that...thankfully! Are you doing well on the Dash diet so far?

Hello Everyone! I am wanting to try the Dash diet since the doctor has put me on several medications to no avail. Hi. I'm Anne. I'm planning to start the DASH diet tomorrow-- after I go to the grocery store-- and would like to interact with other people following the diet.

My reason for starting is that I have high blood pressure, and also that the DASH diet seems to have a lot of daily menu examples on the Internet compared to similar diets. Can anyone tell me if there's a book that's as good as the information you can get on the internet?

Welcome Yvonne Sounds like you have an excellent medical team Good especially on diet and fitness consults...Yeah!!! Keep us posted on how you are doing and I hope we can become more active in helping and encouraging each other

I think this diet has a lot of positives ...is so much easier to follow than many other attempts...They do let you sneak in some artificial sweeteners etc that are a real encouragement especially at first but the purists will gradually be able to give them up too. Right now, the weight and sodium issues are biggest for me so I m willing to use a little pretend sweet.

I am strong woman of faith and will be praying for your health and positive experience here.

Hi! My name is Yvonne and I was just put on medication for hypertension. I'm 46 years old, full time employee, wife, mom & lead a stress-filled life at home and at work like most people. I'm awaiting a call-back for an appointment with a dietician & fitness trainer. Meantime, I've been researching the DASH diet. I also found out from my lab results that I am pre-diabetic (just barely over the acceptable limits) and I will be having a sleep study done soon for apnea. 46 & falling apart I told my husband, LOL!!!

I'm looking forward to being a part of this team and participating/learning here!

Well, I don't have hypertension, but I have a bunch of diet-sensitive "issues" including high cholesterol. My significant other has diabetes, and this diet appears to address all of this stuff. PLUS, and this is the big draw at the moment, it's DOABLE!!! I keep trying these very restrictive diets and I just don't stick to them. So we'll give "healthy real life" a shot.

Hi, I am Janette. I am turning 54 yrs old. I joined SP last May at 170 lbs. I started to eat more whole foods, less processed and fast foods, and exercising a lot more. I have lost about 25 lbs now, I have just had my blood pressure medicine cut for the second time, so I am only on 1/4th a pill/5 mg since Monday. I also just started the Dash diet Monday per a suggestion from my drs ofc. I live in Escondido, CA.
