Hi,
Have signed up for the AF 10K and am really looking forward to it (it's a goal of mine to complete). I actually did the AF half-marathon in 2006 when still on active duty--it was a thrilling experience, but I really did not know how to train, d'oh! Hopefully this time around I've gained some wisdom. Have been on SP since last October, slowly working my way thru some weight gain and old knee issues. Glad to have found this team!

Welcome! I did the 1/2 at JASR and will be doing the 1/2 at AF. I live in the area so it is a no brainer, lol.

I brought DeAnn to JASR and rode with Tom. I know you couldn't remember meeting me.

Welcome to the team! Air Force marathon weekend holds a special place in my heart especially since I ran the Half last year. This year, Air Force will be my first Full.

You are going to love the atmosphere of Air Force and the organizers and volunteers are wonderful! So supportive.

Best wishes with your training and if you ever have any questions, please ask!

Hi everyone. I am new to this particular Spark Team, but have been a SP member for just over 2 years. My husband John is not a member but he does support me and he actually ran his 3rd 5K this past weekend at the JASR in Pittsburgh (I was ill and unable to participate except as cheerleader lol). We live in central PA about 35 miles west of State College.

I considered doing the AF half last year but the dates were in conflict w/a previous vacation plan. Tom McCourtt spoke with John at JASR and gave him the bug so now we are set to be in Dayton in Sept. Although I have completed 2 HM's so far, I have never really trained for them, but since John is doing this with me, we are going to try to do some serious training. We are older (63 & 67) and really do more walking than running, but I feel certain we will manage. For us, it is about taking the challenge and then finishing it. I look forward to getting to know people on here and meeting you in Sept.

Happy Easter and God bless you all with good health and safe runs.

A couple of us have family members running the 5K so we are meeting there at least. I will be making a sign for 1 of the tables at the 5K which is right outside the Nutter Center. There is a seating area and music, pizza for sale, etc. I think we are going to try to get together after the 5K for supper. Not sure about that yet.

Hi Margaret! You got it right, I am Tracy. It was great to meet, you, your husband and son and Tom!

If everyone hasn't figured it out by now, Tom is a great guy! Very full of enthusiasm! I learned a lot talking with him yesterday. You can definitely feel his energy! Can't wait to see everyone in less than a week!

Boy talk about someone being slow, I thought I did introduction, when I first joint the group. First live here in Dayton been here for the past 30 years. I work at WPAFB, but not military.
I starting running 1-January 2011, the same day I signed up for the AF Marathon, it has been a life long dream to run a marathon. So with no idea of how do it I took my second leap of faith with Spark, and just decided I'd find a way. (The first leap of faith was joining Spark).
I've done most of my training for the AF marathon on base and ran several 10Ks and a Prequel 1/2 marathon on base this year, at this point I've run every part of the actual marathon, just not all at once.

Fear is a natural reaction to moving closer to the truth.

I am Margaret and I just found out about this group today from Tom McCourt and Tracy? ( I am hoping that was her name. Sorry is I messed up on the name). My hubby, youngest son and I will be doing the 10K again this year. I am not a runner. I walk. I finished the 10K in a little over 1hour 33 minutes last year. I haven't been training as I should this year so I am hoping to finish in at least 1 hour 45 minutes this year.
After talking with Tom and Tracy this morning I have my "Spark" back. Glad we ran into them at the Popcorn Festival.

Katie, I'm planning to be around 5 hours myself. We should definitely meet up before the race and give a shot at running it together. That would be great.

Hi, I'm Debbie and I'll be doing the AF Full Marathon. I live in Temecula, CA (near San Diego and Los Angeles). I've got two kids (5 and 6) and a husband who is out of town most of the time. I work in San Diego.

This will be my second time doing this race. I did it the first time in 1999. I'm in the Air Force, I share a birthday with the Air Force (Sept 18th), and I like to run. So I've always felt this is *my* race. In 1999 I was on active duty stationed in San Diego. And this time I'm a reservist stationed at March ARB in Riverside, CA. There will be a whole plane load of us coming from March for this race. I'm not sure how many, but I know they were aiming for about 80 of us. We'll be wearing dark blue running gear that says MarchFITT in Red and White. There are a lot of folks in our group doing the half.

The first time I did the AF Marathon, I was following some bad advice and didn't drink any gatorade (yes, stupid... don't ask). Predictably at mile 18 (not coincidentally also my longest training run distance) my feet cramped up due to electrolyte depletion and running and walking on them became extremely painful. I started walking from that point and I almost fell on an overpass due to the sudden and extreme pain of just standing. My family tried to get me to quit, but I hadn't flown all the way to Ohio to quit at mile 20 (that's where I was when I reconnected with my family.) So I limped the rest of the race, and finished it running on my tiptoes that last 1/2 mile. I finished in 6:30.

I've always felt that while I have the right to say "I did a marathon" or "I completed a marathon" I don't have the right to say "I ran a marathon." My decision to do this race came in about February. I'm training for this and the Hood To Coast (HTC) relay together. So some of my long runs are done all at once and some are done split between a morning session and an evening session to simulate the type of running I'll do for the H2C. It also gives me the ability to get my distance in while juggling work and kids.

I can't believe I haven't been here in so long! Great to see you, Tracy! I'm going to borrow Laurie's optimistic vibes & believe things will better this year too. They've talked a lot about changes that are being made this year, so I'm sure the coordinators listened to the feedback and fixed the problems. Looking forward to meeting you!

I am Tracy and live in Fairborn OH, home of the AF race. I have ran the 5K once, walked it twice, once with my dad and last year with my dad and 6 y/o son. I have also ran the 10K twice.

This year I registered for the 1/2 on Jan. 1, the first day of registration. It will be my first 1/2.

Last year things didn't run very smoothly. The 10K and marathon started at the same time and a WHOLE lot of people were still walking to the start line when the gun went off. The parking was atrocious and there was no shuttle bus as there had been the previous year. I left my house almost 2 hours before the race for a 10 minute drive and got to the start about 3 minutes before the gun. The 1/2 starts an hour later. My Garmin said I had walked over 1.5 miles from my car to the start then back after the 10K. Wasn't ready for 9 miles on my feet but the post race beer tasted GREAT at 8:45 in the morning! LOL

Hopefully this year will be better! Can't wait to hopefully meet some Sparkers!!!

Actually, running this many is becoming the norm...good, bad or indifferent. I started my running career June 2009 having NEVER being an athlete and I have embraced this feeling and won't let it go. I applaud you for even considering a Full. That is something that is not even remotely close to my radar screen. I enjoy the challenge of the HM distance and still cannot believe I am even doing this.

Now, off to add you as a friend!

That would be awesome! Hey, I see your have your Half Fanatic, I have totally been bitten, too! Hoping to work on that next year, too. This year I'm focusing on running my first full marathon, but I've done a few 1/2s as preparation, and I really dig them! Do you run that many normally, or was it an all-out effort specifically to get the HF?

Welcome, Caryn!!! Yep, I want that medal! In fact, I already told hubby Jim that I just know we will go back to run AF 2012. Maybe we will even take our AF son (Vet) and his wife along with us next year to run the HM. Maybe we will see you there next year!

Hi Guys - sounds like I'm the totally newbie on this one. 5K's have been all the further I've 'raced' so far -- started running in June last year. Not fast, not pretty, but I get there..I also try to 'best' myself with each race. I've got a few 10K's lined up in June and July so hopefully by Sept I'll be doing ok for the half. I just got an email saying the full marathon is closed (full) and the half only has 100 slots left....yikes!!

I look forward to learning all I can and support when I can.....

Believe.

First, Laura, even if you can't race with us I'd love to see you again; it's been quite some time.

I'm Bill and just a couple years ago I actually "ran" my first full 5K; I just completed my first marathon. I'm no speed demon by any means, but I always try to set a new PR every time I toe the line.

My plans for AF are to practice my speedwork and chop off 9 minutes of my HM time! I'm going to start hitting the ST more to help with all of my goals.

Can't wait to see everyone in September!

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

Since we're getting some new faces, I'll go ahead & introduce myself. My name is Renee, and I'm from Mason, Ohio. I started running for 30 seconds at a time in fall 2009. On May 1st of this year, I completed my first half marathon with my bestie Mel (MGJARVI) & my sister. And now I'm hooked on the half! I'm registered for AF, and plan to run Columbus and Disney Princess with some incredible friends. I can't wait to earn some new PRs & have a great time along the way!

Laura, first of all WELCOME! I have heard that about the full also, but its the HM's that is my thing. According to the website, the Full is now 85% full and the HM is 80% full. We would love to have you join our motley crew if there is any way possible!

My name is Laura. I live in Xenia, OH and have been in the Dayton area for almost 20 years. Began running (again) about 3 years ago, but have never done any of the AF events! I hear it is exceptionally well run, but the full is out in the great wide open (more so than the rest of the events) and so is not recommended by locals in the know.... just what I have heard, fwiw.

I have not committed to running any of the AF this year either (yet), but I thought I would see who is planning to, and maybe I will join the party. Truthfully I have not been feeling competitive this year, and spending money to run when I would anyway just seems silly. But I will think about it!

Laura
