Hi everyone, I'm looking to lose about 20lbs and run my fastest 5k. They say you take 10sec off every mile for every pound- that should help!

Hello. My name is Ashley. I am 23. I live in Jacksonville on the northside. My goal is to lose about 22 pounds and improve my health and energy. I feel tired and depressed all the time and I'm sick of it. Time to make a new start and hopefully find some motivation to do so.

From what my daughter says the eating habits of nurses never gets better-mostly grab and go. She's an RN at OPMC.

Hello everyone! My name is Emily and I'm about to turn 20 in April. I'm a sophomore in college, aspiring to become a nurse! Since I've started college my eating habits and health have been going downhill and I just won't accept that. I'm still very young and want to get into the habit of eating well and exercising every day! I've been off and on with this but I figured with joining this group and this site in general would really help motivate me into doing so. Anyways don't be shy and message me! I'd really love to make some friends on here!

Hi SP! My name is Drea and I am a 33 year old single full time mom, student and nurse!! I live in Jacksonville, FL and I have at least 150 pounds to lose so I am here for the LONG haul... :) Anyway, I am not committing to a diet, but a lifestyle change. I have been on numerous diets and I need something that I can live with at this point. I am looking for SP friends so that we can motivate each other... Hi, my name is Amanda. I'm 30 years old. I'm back doing Spark for the 3rd time. I have had great success in the past (20 lbs the first time and almost 40 lbs the second). My biggest goal is to be able to keep up with my boyfriend in his "adventures". He's a vet, who loves kayaking, four-wheeling, hiking, and camping. At my current weight and health, it's a chore just keeping up with the 4-wheeling and running around town!

Hi Sandy emoticon
I'm also neighbor, I live in Middleburg. I will love to meet you and it will be great to start some support group among the members in our area.
We have a team of 3 that walk every Saturday at the Jax-Baldwin Trail off of Commonwealth. We have also gone to the beach and to the River walk for variation, I have been walking with Jessig5 for over 1 1/2 years and Stillkickn19 join us about a year ago when she moved into town. We have become very close friends.
We have invited several times the group but does not have too much success bringing in more members to the group of walkers. You are definitely more than welcome to meet with us.....if you want more information send me a Spark Email.
I invited you to be my Spark Friend.
Have a great week!

Hi Sandy! I live in OP behind BJ's so I'm not far from you. I haven't yet made it up for the Saturday walks in Jax so I haven't met the locals gals though I did meet two other couples from the Florida team when we had a very small get together near Tampa.

Hi, my name is Sandy and I've been doing Spark since the first week of July. Somehow I missed seeing the Jax Team when I was picking teams even though I've lived in Fleming Island (Orange Park) for 18 years. The other teams I'm on include low carb, living with chronic pain, a beading team, gardening team, allergy team (who lives in Florida and doesn't have allergies?).
I like the idea of actually getting to personally meet some of the people from this team, unlike most of the other teams that aren't geographically related. I hope to make some new friends from this team and lose the rest of this *%#*@ weight!!!

Welcome Brigette!
This are some things that have worked for me. Keep in mind everybody is different and what might work for me might not work for you or the other way around.
I tell you a little about myself, I'm 60 years young....I had signed up to SP in Jan 2010 and bought myself a treadmill.....after a few days I gave up on both, needless to say.....my weight kept climbing and my sedentary life didn't help the way I felt, I also have an stressful business and at the time I was much busier that I'm now.
In Aug 2011 both my husband and I were in need of medical insurance, I was denied due to my age, weight and they did a physical and found my blood pressure and cholesterol were high, not by much but enough to denied me coverage. I got really ANGRY, but after I came down I realized I was doing this to myself and I had to do something about it or else.
I came back to SP and dust off my treadmill, started both.
1. Started writing everything on the nutrition tracker....A real eye opener. When I started to print my reports it was scary.
2. Started to walk in my treadmill at a low pace and short time periods....10 or 15 minutes my body couldn't take much more than that and even at speed 2.5 I had to hold on for dear life.
3. Soon after joining started to get interested in reading articles and other members blogs
4. Before too long I started cleaning my pantry from unhealthy foods and started to replace them with better options.
As time was passing my physical activities got easier and I started to add more time and more intensity, my cooking (which I thought it was healthy before but really was not) got healthier, my portions got smaller and my weight started to fall off, I have lost 37 Lbs I now jog in my treadmill two or three times per week, walk 3 to 4 miles per days (I don't hang from the TM anymore) I eat fruits and vegetables, I have replaced all refined grains, I have reduced the sodium intake less than 2300mg per day, I drink a minimum of 8 cups of water, I have learned to listen to my body and respect it.
My blood pressure & cholesterol are normal.
Did it happen over knight? NO.
Was it easy? NO/MAYBE AND SOMETIMES.
Am I committed? YOU BET!
Do I feel better at 60 than when I was 57? YOU BET I DO!
Is it worth it? YES!
DO THIS
1. Don't think DIET instead think Healthy Lifestyle.
2. Just take on a new healthy habit at the time.
3. Don't give up
You have very concrete goals and very manageable, they are small and SMALL works better.
You will be successful!!!!! emoticon

That does NOT sound silly to me. I remember hearing the weights of some football players and the heavyweight boxing champ and realizing I weighed more than they did. It's a great goal!

My new goal may sound somewhat silly, but it is to weigh less than my husband. He is 6'5" and weighs 238 lbs. I started at 333 and am down to 265. 28 more lbs to go and I will be 1 pound less than him. :) I know, it does sound kinda silly *shrug*

Welcome Tammy!
Tammy I'm Issy the team leader for the Jacksonville Team, I'm 60 years "Young", I had signed up with SP back in Jan 2010 but never got motivated enough to do it. In Aug 2011 I was denied medical insurance due to my age, weight, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. That was enough to motivate me....after I passed the angry stage. emoticon
You are in the right place to accomplish your big goal. I recommend to you to set small goals and add one or two healthy habits at the time so you don't get over whelmed, once you feel comfortable keep adding more good habits, in time you will see the results, the energy, the strength and the way you will be feeling it will make it all worth while.
The most important tool is the nutrition tracker....it takes a while to get use to write down what you are eating but is very important, because when you pull your report at the end of the week you will see what your nutrition is really like....too much sodium, not enough protein or fiber, etc.
The most important micro nutrients you need to stabilize is the fat, carbohydrates, protein, sodium and fiber and of course stay within the calorie range they recommend.
If you like to plan ahead....you got the battle half won....I'm not a good planner but I'm learning to get better now with SP.
If you are in the West Side or not too far from it, I invite you to join us for a walk on Saturday morning at the Baldwin - Jax Trail off of Commonwealth near I-295. I walk with two other SP members, send me a Spark email if you want to join us for more details.
Good luck, keep in touch and keep motivated.
Issy

Hi, Team!
I'm new to this group. I'm Tammy, 55 yrs old and I need to lose 120 lbs but if I can just get a sensible plan and pattern established to lose 20 lbs I really think I can do it the rest of the way too! I've been diabetic since 1986, during that time there wasn't a lot of true information available for diabetics. Insulin was only available from the pancreas of a pig. Now I am under control but want to be able to decrease or eliminate the insulin because it's purpose in the body is to build fat cells as well as control blood sugar!! If I can just overcome "me" will be a wonderful hurdle covered! I need someone to challenge my old thinking until I can establish new and true thinking! I'll do my best to return the kindness!! Any other "older" members out there?

Hey everybody!
I've had a sparkpeople account for a few years but am really getting involved with it finally. I've lost 90+ lbs with Weight Watchers and am in the process of trying to take off a few pounds that I gained back last year. Also issued myself a 100 day challenge to learn to love my body, like myself and appreciate this journey that I've been on. Hence, the numbered blogs that I post daily.

Upcoming races:
Sprint Tri -8/9
MS 150 -9/20
Marine Corps 1/2 in Jacksonville -10/4
Savannah Rock n Roll 1/2 -11/8
Thanksgiving 1/2 -Thanksgiving
Jacksonville Bank 1/2 -12/28
Surf City Marathon -2/1
...and a few 5k's for good measure I'm sure!

Hi SCSTICHIC, emoticon
This is a great place to start learning about nutrition, health and weight loss. Also it has a lot of avenues to keep you motivated. When in need of help and motivation please feel free to contact me either by the Spark Email or via any of our forums.
I walk Saturday morning with two other Spark Members at the Jax - Baldwing trail, Jessig5 already told you about, you more than welcome to join us if you think the outdoors is not going to affect your allergies or asthma. I live in Middleburg but I frequent the Argyle Town Center specially in the weekends.
Good luck in your new journey it takes a lot of patience, motivation, consistency but it is well worth it......I have had great changes in my life since I faithfully sign in to SP on daily basis. Just take one little step at the time and you will get to your goal.

Hello and Welcome to the team. Spark is a great site to educate and motivate you. If you like to walk, you are invited to walk with us on Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. We walk on a trail just off I-295 and Commonwealth. If you are interested, let me know.

Also, I attend water aerobics at the Riverside Y on Thursday and Friday mornings. I would love to have a buddy to join me there.

Good luck on reaching your goals and stay in touch with the team.

Hello, everyone. I have been in the Jacksonville area for a year and am looking to get a new healthier start on life. I live in the Argyle Forest area. I am hoping to lose about 80 lbs this year. I want to learn to plan and prepare healthier meals and get my family involved. And of course, want to tone. I was just recently diagnosed with allergic asthma so that has been a challenge in my exercising and hoping to contain this and make it better with weight loss. My main problem is motivation and being that I know really know anyone in JAX, I have no workout buddies and don't have anyone I know that will share my same interest and weight loss goals and motivation. I hope to be continue to be an active member of Spark People.

You are welcome any time Kerry. If you get to tired, you can always stop and rest on a bench. It is nice to have others to walk with who are on Spark also. It is motivating. Sometimes I wouldn't walk or wouldn't walk as far if I didn't have the others to encourage me.

I walked today for the first time since I caught that cold and it was hard going. We were actually a little slower than usual. Last week, the other ladies walked without me and did it about six minutes faster. I am thinking it will take a little while to get my breathing back to normal because as soon as we started walking, I started coughing which I hadn't done for several days.

I'm in Orange Park but haven't made it up for the walk yet. Maybe one of these Saturdays I'll make it up there but I probably won't be able to walk far with the arthritic hips and back. It would be nice to not be walking alone though.

We would also do the Biggest Loser challenge while the show was on and challenge everyone to set a goal to reach in the 3 months the show was on. We would set a weekly weigh in day for every one to post how they did for the week. It was a great motivator to get peeps to participate emoticon

No, I haven't heard of anything like that. The three of us who walk did do the pink bra walk to raise money for breast cancer last October but no one else joined us. We can hardly get anyone to post on the message board.

I'm out on the Westside, Issy is in Middleburg. I know we have members in Arlington but I can't remember which ones. We also have people on the Northside and in Mandarin.

The reason I asked is that three of us walk four miles on Saturday mornings and if you would like to join us, you would be more than welcome. We were walking at 7 a.m. Saturdays but have changed to 8:00 for the winter.

We walk at the Rail Trail off on Imeson Rd. off Commonwealth.

Hello, my name is Christy and I was a Sparkie between 2007-2008. Well I'm back again due to about 40 lb weight gain over the past 2 stressful years. It's now time to get back at it and get healthy again emoticon

How is the team now days? Who are the Team Leaders? I was a Team Leader during my last time on here so I am pretty familiar how things work.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone emoticon

Hi Bobbi,
I did the low carb thing for a couple of weeks and lost several pounds. I don't know why I didn't stick with it. And welcome to our team,

One day at a time; one pound at a time.

That's funny that we do kind of the opposite thing. At least that's what I should be doing-I lost 100 lbs doing that but have had problems getting back to it. Mine was cereal (carbs) for breakfast, 1/2 sandwich (carbs) for morning snack, meat, green veg, and brown rice (carb) for lunch, milk and apple (carbs) for snack and meat and green vegetable (carb) for dinner. That kept me full all day and with working out, losing.

Bobbi, I'm sort of doing a low carb thing. I'm trying not to eat any during breakfast or lunch, but I will have them with dinner. So far it's working well.

Hi Bobbi! Not really low carb but I do know I lose better if I stay away from carbs after about mid afternoon. Other than carbs from green vegetables, that is.

Hi all! My name is Bobbi and I am in the Mandarin area. I am using a low carb diet to (hopefully) lose about 60 pounds that I've gained since high school. Is anyone else doing low carb? Nice to meet all of you!

7 a.m. it is.

The early time allows us to get it done and get on with the day. Plus, during the summer, we are finished before it gets so hot and humid.

Kerry, join us anyway. If you can't walk the entire four miles, do part of it.We walk two miles out and then turn around and come back to the starting point. There are benches where you could rest and wait for us. Or maybe, someone else on the team would like to join you for a shorter distance.

The invitation is open to any other team members who would like to join us. It is so much easier when you have others to support you and offer encouragement.

What part of town did you moved to? 2 team members and I walk 4 miles every Saturday morning at the Jax-Baldwin Trail in the West Side. Let me know if you are interested.

Welcome to Spark and to the Jacksonville team, Ruthie. We are glad to have you.

I did the same thing at Thanksgiving. I was so good the day of but then I made the mistake of taking an extra pan of dressing home to put in the freezer and instead, I ate it. Not all at once but gradually over a couple of days. Oh well, the one thing we learn here is to just get back on the horse again. None of us are perfect.

Looking for a local group where I can participate. Just found Spark People and Started a profile. Tracking blood sugar and food. Found a few recepies. Totally messed up not at Thanksgiving, but after with all that food in the refrigerator.

That is terrific news, Kerry! Hope all is well!

I am down with a bad back today and I am not feeling very Sparkly, so I am supporting others by reading millions of blogs and commenting. There are so many people who make me feel like I matter here on this site, so I am giving back today. :)

All of mom's test came back normal so she has gone back home to the retirement center. The Dr prescribed some migraine medicine since she's had a couple recently but the think she probably had a TIA. She sounded great when I talked to her today.

They can' find anything wron with my mom other than internal hemmoroids (may not be spelled right but I know hammertoes is NOT right and that's what the spell check keeps telling me LOL) My sister told the Dr about the two blinding migraines mom's had recently and he said this may have been the same thing or they were all TIAs but they are giving her some migraine medicine so hopefully that will prevent it from happening again. I did talk to her today and she was totally coherent. We will probably go back some time before Christmas but at least I can buy early enough or wait until I can get a fare we can afford.

Sorry to hear about your mom having health problems, keep us posted my prayers will be going to you both.
If you have to go out of town for the stressful reason that you are stating below....don't neglect yourself, just do one little thing to keep you in track....if you don't have the cup to measure use the palm of your hand if you don't have the tbsp use your thumb and if you have a chance to track your food try not to stop.
Keep in touch, good luck, Issy

Thanks for the welcome. My big goal is to lose another 45 lbs and I think sparkcoach has helped to finally get my head into the game. A short term goal is to have 7 gone by my birthday or my brother's birthday which are only a few days apart. lol I would love to walk with others-maybe it would help me get some speed back. I used to do 5 k's every couple of months but arthritis caught up with me so I have 2 artificial knees, 2 arthritic hips and lower spine which is now twisted to the left. It makes walking very interesting as I tend to stagger a lot, but I do know if I just sit and do nothing then I will be sitting forever.

I may need to head out of town soon as my mom went into the hospital in Nebraska today and they are trying to determine what is causing her lethargy and confusion but there is no actual sign of stroke. She is having a barrage of tests including a colonoscopy tomorrow (Fri) to see if her cancer is back. She has been clear for about 3 years now.

Hi Kerry, I guess we have to meet soon, I live in Middleburg but I'm always around OP and the Oakleaf Town Center. The weekends after our walk early in the morning are the best time for me, maybe we can do some Mall Walking sometime.
See you soon!!

Hi Kerry and welcome to our team. We are the same age and I also do water aerobics. My schedule only allows for twice a week though. As Ang says, some of us walk together on Saturday morning and if you would like to join us, you would be very welcome. Just let us know.

Good luck on your Spark efforts whatever your goals.

Well, KerryG155, we are happy to have you! I have not met up with the Jax team in person yet as I am still recovering from a 3-month stint in a leg cast. But I am going to get there soon. Check out the photos of our fearless team in the Team Stream. They are a riot!

I am haoping to catch up with them one day and go walking. Until then, I stick to walking around my back yard. 10 laps if almost 3 miles, so I am okay with that. And I know if I break my leg again I can crawl to the house and up the stairs like last time. So I am just getting comfortable with my leg and ankle again.

But I am so glad you joined. I know the ladies meet up each Saturday morning and do a ton of walking.

Make sure you post in the Time to Celebrate message thread and let everyone know about you and that you are here. I am sure they would love to get with you and have you walk/run with them!

Nice meeting you, and I do hope you stick around!!

Hugs, Angela

Hi! I thought I would join this team as I live in Orange Park. I haven't met any local sparkers though I have met a few from the Gulf Coast and had fun doing that. I am 61 soon to be 62 and feeling about 30 years older thanks to arthritis but I still get to the gym at least 3 days a week for water aerobics and aim for 5 days a week including a senior class and/or cycling. Married, 3 daughters, 2 sons-in-law and 2 grandkids from the middle daughter.

Hi, I'm Ashley. I'm from Jacksonville, but I've lived in Chicago (and I'm back in Jacksonville now). I just turned 21 back in August, and I'm trying to lose weight before my cousin's wedding. I'm going to be a bride's maid. I just want to look and feel good, not only that day, but every day.
