I don't measure myself, but I do go by how clothes fit. I also go by how I feel.

Do you think measuring is important or just weighing yourself. I have just been weighing myself, but then I see people talking about losing inches when they haven't lost weight. Since you have been so successful, was wondering what you thought on this? Thanks for this opportunity to ask questions. emoticon

Hi ~IndyGirl
First may I please start by saying you are a real Star emoticon I have been on Sparks a week or so now and yours is the first SparkPage I have read from Head to Toe and felt empowered by!!! Although my own journey with weight loss is very different to yours I think there is one area you could help!
I suffer constant chronic pain in my lower back and am unable to exercise (before my pain "issues") I used to walk a lot and do yoga/pilates! now that is too difficult!) I realise the benefit of exercise but have yet to find something that doesn't leave me in pain and unable to walk for weeks afterwards. Because I also suffer from depression and Bi Polar the pain really knocks my confidence.
If you are happy to divulge that kind of information could you tell me what types f exercise you did in the beginning and if you think they might benefit me.

Yours in hope

hi,
I have a Q about plateau as well.
My SW was 157 & GW is 124. It has been a very very slow ride for me. I reached 151 within a month of joining SP last year. But it tooke a year to reach 145.
Now I keep swinging between 141-143.8
It has beem really demotivating.
I d be happy to reach 138 for now...you know? But it seems that for some reason the scales hate me.

I have not really lost a lot in inches either.
Iam working out. Tracking. For few months I tracked on my fitness pal due to mobile app being free but I have been on back sinve a month almost.

Sorry Beth its getting so long ....but I would like to get all the encouragement to keep going.
Trust me I dont mind losing .5lbs a week. What I feel bad about is that I GAIN them despite being good.

Thanks

SW (APRIL2012) 157 POUNDS (71.2 KILOS)

YES! I once had a pleatea for a year when I lost my first 100 pounds. I thought it was the beginning of the end... I was going to gain it all back, yadda yadda... but I stayed the course, gaining and losing the same 10 pounds for a year.

I came up with my mantra "Lost maintain, just don't gain."

Now, having lost 250 pounds, I have regained 20 pounds and am bouncing back and forth with 20 pounds for the last few months. It is driving me nuts and once again I am wondering if this is the beginning of the end.

The answer is- Only if I let it be.

Here is how I maintain my resolve today... I track my food and go to lengths to match my ideal lifestyle... the ideal we all have in our heads of who we want to be. I want to be an organic loving, whole food shopping, healthy eater ideally. My ideal self also would walk and take a serious approach to getting fitness in, even at 5 minute increments throughout the day if she had to. She tracks her food, tracks her exercises, wears sportier clothing... So, I get sportier clothing, shop at whole food markets and buy as much as I can afford on sale, do as much fitness as I can at the level I can, track like crazy on my smart phone and just rely on the fact that my body will eventually HAVE TO give it up. Math is very pure. If I am sincerely making these lifestyle changes, the math will catch up with the measurements and non scale victories and show up on the scale. There just seems to be a period of time where your body requires an adjustment phase. It gives you OTHER rewards that are not on the scale at that time though... My favorite is that clothes get looser. I like that better because it means I look thinner and I would rather look 5 pounds thinner than just be 5 pounds thinner. I know, odd, huh. I like fitting into booths, jeans, seatbelts, new clothes, trying new foods to help me loose weight.

Breaking a plateau... Let me refer you to a blog I professionally wrote for the Daily Spark:

I never cut out anything from my diet, Allie. I always use moderation. I just take in LESS of the culprits that are not as good for me. I know that sugars, high fructose corn syrup and refined enriched flours cause inflammation and hunger, so I( try to avoid them, not banish them. I just use as little as I can get away with. I mean, we have to live in the real world and I don't want to stress about food anymore.

I spent my whole life worrying about what I was or wasn't eating and SparkPeople set me free from that. Now I try too add the good stuff so there is less room for the bad stuff. You'll find by increasing your intake of whole wheat flour, whole grain this or tha, stevia instead of sugar, pure raw can sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup... you will feel better. That6 way to are adding to your plan, not taking away from it. Sure, you might use some flour and sugar here and there or eat some junk. We all do. Just keep in mind that they cause cravings. Follow up with plenty of fruit (natural sugar) to come down from it and water.

Thank you Beth, for taking the time to answer my questions. Lol.. I love it. Your so right. If he doesn't know what can he say? I have never tried to just making something without letting him know what it is. He's a noisy neighbor and always asks. lol....... Without giving specifics I am just going to make it simple. Spaghetti etc. ;) I have got to step living for other people and start living for me.
I will wean the kids but they have jobs, & money and bring things into the house. I have told them to take it to their rooms. I don't want them having it period and feel like it is my doing that they eat this way. It really makes me feel angry for teaching my kids to not care about what they eat. They are well aware of changes I am trying to make now and tell me they are happy because they want to eat healthier too yet they continue to bring Oreos and other crap into the house. Maybe they will eat less of it where I'm not eating it now. :) I hope.
I was wondering if you could tell me how you plan your meals? I am re reading the You On A Diet book again but feel like it's doing what you said, going from 0-100 in a minute. I am not sure if that's exactly what you said but I got the point. :) Did you cut out sugar and white flour cold turkey and follow Dr. Oz's plan for the 14 days? Do you recall how long the cravings lasted and how long it took you to get into the swing of eating like that? I so appreciate your time as all of us do here. You have a good soul. I'm so happy to have found this team.

there is an article I wrote for the Daily Spark that really encompasses a lot. I added more to it in a persona blog on my page.

As far as my family, my husband does throw fits at whole wheat spaghetti and such. I make him eat it anyway. I just make what I make and he complains lol. If he wants something else, he can cook it. If you aren't such a cold meany, you could try using leaner recipes and making the spaghetti with 90% lean beef, draining it and rinsing it.... then adding a lowfat sauce and whole wheat pasta. Honestly, when they don't know it's whole wheat, they eat it just fine. It's when they KNOW it that they complain. There are many nights when my husband eats cereal for dinner rather than something healthy with me.

The thing is that your kids are going to learn to like what you give them now. So start fitting in healthier foods to their menu. They don't have to go cold turkey healthy, but fitting in more fruits, veggies, and leaner recipes will definitely benefit them all and you. It doesn't have to go from 0 to 100%. Just nudge it up a notch at a time in the healthy factor. That's what I've been doing. Then, if they turn their noses up.... they can eat cereal. (Whole grain of course!)

Beth

Hi Beth,
I'm having problems finding foods my family will eat with me. They still want the ooey gooey foods like mashed potato, spaghetti & meatballs, & garlic bread. When I eat this it calls to me to eat more, more, more.
My question is, did you have difficulties with this and if so how did you handle it? Did you eat differently from your family or friends? I got the book You On A Diet, and it is great. I get inspired every-time I read it. Now it's just taking that information and applying it.
One more question. Did you ever binge and if so, how did you break the cycle,. Can you just eat one slice of pizza? One cookie? Or do you stay away from those things? Thank you :)

Thank you so much for recommending the freeze dried veggies as a way to get in an extra serving!! I love them!! They were sold out of peas when I went, but I got the corn and edemame. I must admit the corn was my fav, but both are yummy!! So much healthier than say a 100 cal pack, satisfies my need to "snack" and gets in a much needed veggie serving!! Thank you, again Indygirl!! emoticon

Weighing In

I weighed in monthly for awhile because the ups and downs upset me. I've been obsessed enough to jump on the scale 10 or more times a day. I've been calm enough to weigh once a day. I would say that the healthiest I felt was the once a month weigh in, and I lost the best using that method. The overall weight loss using the once a month method for me is good because I miss all of the little fluctuations in weight. I am now obsessed again and jumping on and off the scale like a nut. My advice to myself and others like me is that the scale is not a god and it should not be given such power. The feeling of being healthy is so much more powerful and motivating than the number on the scale, so try to go as long as you can muster tracking and taking on as much activity as you can. The results will come. How can they not? You will feel amazed. Weigh in as often as you need to keep track of your weight.

The trick is to not let the number you get rule you. It is a number, not your self worth. Separate it from whether you are good or bad. It has nothing to do with that. It's about staying motivated no matter what. It's hard, but possible.

You have to find something, a cause, a purpose, anything deep down that you really want more than the life you are leading now. Imagine yourself as a healthy eater now, rather than a dieter... an athlete, not an exerciser... Mindsets are vital and scales will reflect them.

Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now. ~Indygirl

Foot Pain

That is a pretty serious problem. I saw a foot doctor who recommended shoes for me and I stayed off of my feet and did chair exercises and physical therapy until they healed. The shoes really are worth the money and the therapy does work.

Hi IndyGirl, thank you for the q and a board. My question is about walking and foot pain. When you first began exercising, mainly any walking did you have more foot achy pain. And did the foot pain go away after a while, weeks, months or ??
Thank you for your time...

I have noticed that my hunger is more in check now that I have lost more weight. I think that's why they say your stomach "shrinks." I don't know if the actual stomach literally shrinks, but your belly and appetite sure do. It does seem to be permanent, as long as I don't get into a bunch of sugary or fatty foods. Then the cravings start. I don't have the wheat problem, personally.

I say for me, everything in moderation. What you are experiencing is a type of withdrawal, I believe. I went through it myself and that's what I was told. When I cut out wheat, there was such a limitation put on the amount of carbs I could actually eat, that I ended up not eating many. Sure, I lost weight, but when I ate normally again, the pounds come back with revenge. It is always best for me personally, to stick to something I can do for the rest of my life. The no wheat diet was too stressful for me. If you feel your moods are better and you are less depressed, then it may be worth it. Ask yourself if you can see doing it for the rest of your life. Whatever that answer is.... that's the answer as to whether you should eat or do it consistently. If you can't hold it for the long haul, you will eventually be failed by the plan. (Which will try to trick you into thinking YOU failed. Not true- You found what did not work.)

Dear Indygirl, I've more questions.... :)
This one is maybe related to what the poster before me asked.

Just read your blog in which you mention that certain foods make you hungry.
I'd like to ask your opinion on the idea of 'cutting foods out'. Some are very much for it, because some foods do seem to cause a sort of 'false hunger'. Others are very much against it, saying that it will lead to a feeling of deprivation that will backfire and cause us to binge on these foods that we've 'forbidden' ourselves to eat.
So what is your thought on this topic?

I've been experimenting with cutting out sugar and wheat, and I know that cutting a food out is NOT easy, at all. Not for me anyway! Still I do seem to notice that I feel better and have less urges to binge if i don't eat wheat (wheat seems to be more of a culprit in my case than sugar is, to my surprise).
I'm hesitating right now.... It's a tough choice: will I continue to not have these foods? There are some indications that yes, eating wheat causes me to have mood swings, to feel irritable and depressed and that in turn makes the chances I'l binge bigger. (Mind, I'm only finding that out now that I have been cutting it out; as long as I frequently eat wheat I don't notice these effects, but eating it after not having it for few weeks I do seem to notice these things).
On the one hand I can hardly believe that such a 'common' food like wheat can have so much impact on how I feel and what I eat. I can feel at times that I should be able to 'do' moderation. On the other hand I don't want to ignore signs that this food is harmful for my health. But, oh my. Not eating bread is hard!

Keep it simple.

Hiya, did you find as you went on that cravings and hunger pangs stopped being so bad? This is always a huge issue for me. I am avoiding sugary things (mostly) because I can't deal with the ups and downs they create in my hunger levels. But I am noticing that I find it a bit easier to stay on track than I did at the start. I'm wondering if this is just part of a cycle or is it likely to be permanent? (I'm sure you have a crystal ball there somewhere!) I'm also wondering, do some people get more affected by eating sugary things than others. I'm sure some of my (thin) friends don't find sweet things have the same effect that I do.

Indygirl, thank you for this opportunity to ask questions. I'd like to ask you what was it that helped you turn around and make the choice to start working on your health and on losing weight... and how did you manage to keep on?
Was it harder in the beginning or later on?

Answer: See my previous post for what helped me turn it around.

I managed to keep on going because of SparkPeople. The people themselves. I literally blog my heart out, have rallies, local meetings, run teams, and do everything I can so that nobody else will have to feel like I did... like they are going to die in their bedroom. The people of Spark encouraged me, so I encourage them and every one of them matters to me. So in order to help them, I have to continue doing what I'm doing. What I could never ever do for myself, I can now do for someone else. It's like you have to find your passion or cause, not just want to fit into a pair of jeans.

It is definitely harder at the ...well, if the journey had 4 parts, I would say phases 2 followed by 3 would be the hardest. Those are the parts where you are finding what fits into your new lifestyle and what doesn't.

# 1 = How does one stay in a range? do you like split your range thru out the day and eat that much?

Answer: I don't always stay in range, but I stay as close as I can and I "bank" calories. Banking calories is when you eat at the lower end of your calorie range for a few days to allow for a treat day. I also never deprive myself of what I want or I binge on it later. Moderation, aka portion control is vital. If you have to have pizza, have a serving. Still craving it, have another serving for your next meal, your snack, your next meal after that... eat it within calorie range until it's gone. The secret is to enter it into your food tracker BEFORE you eat it to see what the outcome will be,

# 2 = How did you deal with the scale like going up 2 lbs instead of down...

Answer: I used to view it as a huge failure, but now I see it for the truth. It takes 3600 calories ABOVE your weight maintenance calories to gain a pound. If you didn't eat that, it's probably water weight or growing muscles. Lack of protein can also cause this phenomenon, although I don't know why. I learned that at the hospital when I was in for low blood sugars. Now, up... down... I see overall that I am losing, so I don't sweat it. The big picture is where you want to look. I started looking at the big picture by doing monthly weigh ins. It REALLY helped me see the downward trend more clearly.

# 3 = when was your breaking point of "enough" is enough darn it? and will it or can it happen for other people too?

I was driving home from work one night crying because the steering wheel was pressing into my stomach so hard and hurting my hernias. I was barely able to walk and I thought, stopping would be the answer. My muscles atrophied and my degenerative joint disease was taking over my body. It was too painful to move. Then after a few years of being bed ridden and in a wheelchair, my best friend had weight loss surgery and lost from the 380s down into the 190s. She was going out and having a life. I wanted that for myself again. The problem was I didn't believe I could do it. I believed others could, just not me.

# 4 = did you ever think weight loss could happen to other people but not you?

Answer : YES!!! Whole heartedly. What changed my mind was a book called "You on a Diet" and SparkPeople.

# 5 = why havent you written a book or even an E book about your journey? :)

Answer: I am currently working on a book, but I have no one to publish it, no agent, no editor... I need help with those things.

I am very interested in how people eat within a calorie range because I have a range, I just dont know how to eat it within a day because it seems so small to me. Any advice or instruction would be great.

Advice: Try aiming for a modest amount of weight loss, maybe 1 lb a week. You will get more food and not burn out so fast. That's what I do. 52 pounds a year!

Right now I am walking 20 minutes per day.... do I like it... no.... but it helps me breathe better.

You might try 2 10 minute walks.
I am on Day 4 today.

I definitely do! I drink tons of water then and eat ice like a mad woman. I also allow myself free reign with the fruits and veggies at night. Even the more fattening ones are free to me at night to stave off hunger. I try to stick to the lower cal ones and use the high cal fruits and veggies as special treats. Try it and sparkmail me what you think.

I am on day 21 of my streak of staying in range. It seems like no matter how much protein I eat and how full I am at dinner, I still end up feeling hungry in the evening. My son says it is because I spent so long eating mindlessly in the evenings that my body still wants food even though I don't need anymore. I just wonder if you exprience this at all.

Okay, Thanks. I did go to sparkpeople calorie calculations 101 and figured this out after I posted the quesiton to you and that helped a lot. I ended up dropping down 1000 calories of the "maintenace" amount to lose 2 lbs a week. I guess I can stay with that range until the lower end of the range doesn't let me lose and then refigure like you said.

I hope your trip was good.

My calorie range would not work for you. Everyone's is different. I suggest VERY frequent calorie revisioning on SparkPeople. Go to trackers, Start, go down the left side to Pounds Lost, then in the small orange letters click Change Goal.

It lets you determine how many pounds per week you want to lose and figures up the calories for you. That's how I get my calorie range. If I stop losing, I redo my calories again or stay toward the lower end of the calories.

I had to have surgery to have mine removed in June 2012 due to a large obstructed hernia. The skin CAN be surgically removed under insurance IF you get rashes and it's documented by your doctor, your legs go numb due to the weight, you have back issues due to the weight, you have hernias due to the weight.... or any other qualifying event that would make it medically necessary under your particular insurance policy if they bought that rider.

Having said that... Please do look at my blog with pictures that is called Tummy Tuck Before Afters= YOU Can Do Much Without The Tuck. It shows how far I got without using surgery and perhaps some of what I did may help you.

Freggies-

There are freeze dried ones that are a little expensive, but they are by funky monkey or Just Tomatoes. You can generally find cheaper versions at stores like Trader Joes. Freeze dried fruits and veggies have nothing in them, except the fruit or veggie and a very nice crunch, a lot like chips. That makes them highly enjoyable. My faves are the fruits= pineapple, berries, grapes, bananas and apples. I love the corn and peas too. They make for a great crunchy snack and are also great to toss into soups or cereals to add freggies.

Thanks so much, I will have to try the fusions. I can't have anything with soy in it, it affects my thyroid. I have hashimotos thyroiditis. My son is lactose intolerant and we learned about it the hard way. =( I love silk soy milk but just recently learned I can't have it. But I will try the juices, I love juice.

MAYBE YOU ARE LIKE ME AND HAVE TO DO THE "LOW RESIDUE" THING. MY BODY JUST CAN'T HANDLE FIBER. LETTUCE IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE BUT IT DOESN'T LIKE ME. IT KEEPS ME IN THE WASHROOM HALF THE NIGHT. WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY IS V8 FUSION. IT HAS A SERVING OF FRUIT AND ONE OF VEGGIES IN ONE 8 OUNCE GLASS. I LOVE THE BLUEBERRY POMEGRANATE ONE. REGULAR V8 HAS TOO MUCH SODIUM. BUT THIS STUFF IS GREAT. DON'T GO FOR THE V8 SPLASH - THAT ONLY HAS A LITTLE JUICE IN IT AND IS MOSTLY WATER BUT THE FUSION IS 100% JUICE. ANOTHER THING YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO IS GETTING OFF OF DAIRY. I USE SOY MILK OR SILK PURE ALMOND LIGHT VANILLA ON BOTH OF THEM. EXCELLENT FOR YOU WITH NONE OF THE SIDE EFFECTS OF DAIRY. WOULD YOU BELIEVE OVER 40% OF AMERICANS ARE ALLERGIC TO DAIRY AND DON'T EVEN KNOW IT?

I have a question and I think I may have asked it before, if I did I am sorry for re-asking. But I am such a picky eater and am trying to get more freggies in my diet...struggling on this one big time. what can I do to get my mind on trying new things and getting more into my diet. I love salad but when I eat it I get indigestion really bad and feel nauseated. I dont' understand why. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ONE THING THAT I HAVE FOUND THAT REALLY WORKS WELL IS THIS. IF YOU TEND TO GET RAW WHERE YOU HAVE SKIN RUBBING ON SKIN, YEAST WILL GROW AND GIVE YOU A PAINFUL RASH. A FRIEND WHO WEIGHS FAR MORE THAN I DO, TOLD ME TO GO TO THE STORE AND BUY DESITIN CREAMY. I USE DISPOSABLE PLASTIC GLOVES TO PUT IT ON AS IT IS HARD TO WASH OFF YOUR SKIN. WITHIN TWO DAYS, THE RASH WAS COMPLETELY GONE! NOW I USE IT DAILY TO PREVENT RASHES. IT IS OVER 100 DEGREES HERE AND HAS BEEN SINCE THE END OF MAY SO I SWEAT A LOT AND REALLY GET RASHES EASILY. ANY STORE BRAND OF DIAPER RASH CREAM WILL WORK TOO. I SOMETIMES USE WHATEVER WAL-MART HAS ON SALE AS IT IS A LOT CHEAPER. IT REALLY WORKS!

I am so glad the question about sagging skin was asked. I don't have it right now because I have only lost 20 pounds but I know I have tons more to go and will have to conqour that myself and I was wondering what to do while I was losing it to help prevent the lose skin. I need to moisturize. I am 35 and it's coming off SLOWLY!! But I need to do more as well. I have been slacking these last 3 months. Got to get exercise mojo going again. LOL!! I think it's AMAZING y'all have lost so much weight. Such an inspiration!!!

It's hard to get out of your comfort zone. I'm in one now, but the thing that spurs me on is spurring other people on. You have to find some sort of passion. I think that's why the 4th step of the Spark diet is to spread the Spark. It helps me to focus on getting others help and being a better role model. Maybe there is something in your life you want more than an instant fix of food. It is hard. Right now I've been having a really hard time with it, but I think of you all and I try my hardest to put down the fork or spoon.

I think it is that you need to find something that you cannot be content without. A dress? Jewelry? Aim to fit it or get it as a reward.

Hmmmm I moisturize and then powder my skin in areas where it gets irritated. The moisture helps the skin go back a bit better and the powder - get the silky kind- helps keep you dry and comfortable. Dry oils are good moisturizers. They really feed the skin. The skin that is flappy can't produce it's own oil now, so thi hslps it but it won't get it to go all the way back. I've done a combination of losing slowly and moisturizing and it has worked very well.

WHEN I SEE THAT PICTURE OF YOU IN YOUR WHEELCHAIR, IT REMINDS ME SO MUCH OF ME. SINCE I HAVE LOST 120 SOME POUNDS, I HAVE SO MUCH SAGGING SKIN. I AM VERY LIMITED ON WHAT EXERCISES I AM ALLOWED TO DO SO IT LOOKS LIKE I REALLY HAVEN'T LOST ANYTHING. I COULD PUT MY STOMACH IN A BABY STROLLER AND PUSH IT OUT IN FRONT OF ME. DO YOU HAVE LOTS OF SAGGING SKIN? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT? THIS SUMMER'S INTENSE HEAT MAKES IT REALLY SORE AT TIMES, JUST FROM MOVING AROUND. A FRIEND SUGGESTED USING DESITIN IN THOSE SKIN FLAPS AND IT REALLY WORKS. BUT THAT SAGGING SKIN IS AN ISSUE.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I do the weight watchers points and I'm having the hardest time. My husband says I'm comfortable with my weight. How do I get out of my comfort zone?
