I took a real long walk yesterday. It took several hours. But, I had to come home early,my neck and shortness of breath got to me.My 'rescue inhaler' worked great but my neck locked up on me and had to get home asap John

I found out, from the Neurologist that I can "try out" a steroid injection to my cervical spine. I turned it down flat. What if he punctures my spinal cord? I've made up my mind to have the 3-4 level fusion. John

Good morning,
I'm having a dilema, I am planning on getting my cervical spine operation afterall. It'll be a 3-4 level fusion. My question, will the operational so it'll consist of a steroid injection along with anesthesia?
Do you think there will be a pulmonologist there in the OR?
John/NY

I've needed the rescue inhaler for my walk today. I walked over two miles. I was out of breath while walking up hill on one occasion and after four hours I took two more puffs. I'm resting at home right now. John

I had a tough time this morning, breathing that is. I went for my early morning walk,my chest tightened up after just one block of walking. I now keep 2 inhalers with me at all times, one in my coat and one in my pants side pocket. I took two puffs one minute apart, and felt great afterwards. I went home right away and will attempt to walk some more later today, after the Mets game is over, lol.

The exact same thing happened to me. My doctor thought I had high blood pressure told him it was the pain knocking it up so high. He sent me home with a water pill prescription. It took a few days before I began to pass out when I stood up,I let them know right away. I,to stopped taking them. John

My blood pressure is 112/71 at the Dr's office last month. I'm 6ft. and weigh 245lbs,I need to drop 55 more pounds. So far, I've dropped35 lbs.
The highest my BP ever got to was 190/120, I was in serious pain that time. I came back to the office twenty minutes later,it was 180/90, still too high but he sent me home with water pills. I was told to stop taking them if I continued to get dizzy,I stopped them and my BP turned back to normal 110/70

JOCKO56BEER2 you are so much luckier than I am...I don't like salt either but when mine drops below 135 I can't walk across the room!!!! That is light-headiness! I still have to fight to stay around 2300 mg a day!!!

The only way I get salt is the natural way, I normally don't ingest salt,I use balsamic vinegar and or lemon juice to season my plate.

PS, I took a muscle relaxer,(it was time) and I'll see how it goes while I take a walk in the rain, but first a puff of Pro- Air or two.

oh well, that head/chest cold then turned into the flu, then pneumonia. I'm just home from the hospital. They had me on 100% oxygen and several times a day taking a nebulized medication. I couldn't sleep nor breath right for eight days! I would just get little naps until coughing would wake me up. I spent my New Years in room 231B. Just as well, I don't drink, lol. I am glad to be home. John

My Mom had sleep apnea, and she had to sleep with this machine over her face to keep her breathing all night. It looked uncomfortable, but it did help her. I think sleeping on your back is worse for it, so I can see how sleeping on your side would help. Good luck, John, if it is, I think the machine will really help you!

Hi Snuz, My doctor think I may have sleep apnea, great huh? Another problem added to the list. I may or may not do the sleep study.I'm not sure.
I do know I must keep exercising so I can get a decent nights sleep,I keep waking up out of breath,(I think it's the sleep apnea),on numerous occasions during the night, but It doesn't happen when I start my sleep on my side, weird.

I,too am waiting for a good night's sleep. I awoke short of breath at 4 this morning. I didn't get back to sleep until 1PM,for an hour. I keep my rescue inhaler very close by.
I hope to sleep on my side and get a good night sleep. Sleeping on my back seems to be the culprit, of sob.

Thank you! I had a wonderful birthday! all my family got to dinner at my favorite restaurant:)
I'm sorry you are experiencing shortness of breath so much and especially in the middle of the night. I know how scary that is! I wish you a good night's sleep!

Happy belated Birthday!,
I awoke at 2AM and couldn't get back to sleep. I did,or rather had,an SOB incident this morning at 5 AM, luckily my albuterol,Pro-Air in my pocket. It stopped the shortness of breath, now, I'm going to drink black coffee with one sugar until my chest relaxes. I still have some tightness there but am not SOB. John/NY

Oh, I really feel for you! Being in the hospital is a miserable experience and 6 days is a very long time! I am so happy you are home now and getting better:)
I walked for an hour this morning. The weather here has been in the 80's again. It was winter for about 3 days then turned back into fall/summer type weather. We are supposed to get another winter like rain next week, on my birthday! I love the rain so it will be a nice birthday present:)

I was short of breath last week and wound up in the hospital for a week.
I hated it. I was on 5 litres per minute with a mask 24/7 for 6 days,I was wide awake for two days of it. Well,to make a long story short I'm home and am well rested. John

another rough day in the neighborhood, it is very humid and foggy outside now and the walk home was tough to breath in and I forgot my rescue inhaler,I was severely out of breath even with doing the 'pursed lips' technique. I'm ok now, I just did my two puffs a minute apart as per doctor's instructions. I used to wait two minutes . John

had a tough time last night, my spasms woke me up at three AM. they were in my thoracic spine(mid back) and wouldn't release until I treated it with moist heat. By the way, that was at three in the morning and I'm still awake, sleepy but awake just the same John

Yes, it does sound like you have sleep apnea, I think there are places that will help, financially, when you have breathing problems. You could look into that, but sorry I don't know any of the names specifically.

I was told last night that I stopped breathing while I was snoring, my girlfriend woke me up and told me that I stopped breathing several times. I'll be telling my doctor about this during my next appointment. i even noticed it while I take at nap, it happens just about the time I do fall asleep, waked me up every time,I have used my rescue inhaler to help with the breathing. I've got a feeling that I'm going to need a sleep study done but I can't afford that

Surprisingly, I am still doing well, I didn't need the rescue inhaler at all yesterday and, so far, this morning, after walking four blocks to my pharmacy and back.
I'll have to go back this afternoon to get the remainer of my medications, they order it in front of me and it will be delivered by one. I hope to make it without any pain.

I went for a long walk today, it was for three miles. When I got to the park I walked around and zig zagged , the northern part of the park,is about about two miles. And the walk to and from the park is a mile for a total of three miles. I'm hurting and I'm pooped.

Oh, I am so glad your back is better and that you didn't injure it worse when you stepped off that curb! Back injuries are so debilitating, but you seem to have a handle on it!

I managed another mile and a half but had a setback. I injured my thoracic just by stepping off of a curb incorrectly thoracic spine felt the jolt this time. I found a bench nearby and sat leaning forward,I turned to my left and felt that vertebrae cracked back into place. It felt good, I stayed and rested for a few minutes then continued walking. I walked three quarters of a mile each way.
Tomorrow is going to be,sort of, a day off. I'll just walk 8 blocks and rest on the benches that line Maclean avenue. The businesses are having an OPEN day on the sidewalks along Maclean,in Yonkers ,NY. My home town. John/LNY (lower New York)

That's great! I have never walked 5 miles. I have done 2, 5k walks and that is 3.1 mile. I think 4 city blocks is almost half a mile, so you are doing great! I need to get out there and start walking again, especially now that it is so cool in the mornings:)
You sure don't want to overdo it and make your back any worse though!
Have a great day!

Good morning SnuzSuz,
I used to be able to walk five miles a day until I had a serious setback to my lumbar spinal cord and nerve roots.I have three bone spurs there that are putting pressure on the nerves for my legs. When it hurts just to take a step, well that can be very defeating, but, I still walk every day after the pain killers take effect. I pack a small back pack with water bottles and a small snack, usually an apple or a pear and go. I am able to walk four blocks without stopping now. I rest for ten minutes before I can continue.Stretching while I rest,
and bending my back to stretch out the tightening muscles,it feels great to do that, then I can continue. I made it to the park in the Bronx for the first time all summer, rested then walked back home to an ice pack in August.
I was bitten by many skeeters when I took a short cut through the forest to get to the big field. It's got four baseball diamonds, a soccer field, two tennis courts and fresh water too. I normally take one to two puffs of Pro-Air when I walk to that park and it does help. Total distance to and from the park is two and a half miles. John/NY

PS, I will try to match that every time I go for a walk but my legs ,sometimes, stop me from making it there. John/NY

I was walking up and down hills last year, and when I first started, I couldn't walk to the top without getting out of breath either. Last October I was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, and now I can't hardly walk half a mile on flat land. But my point is, I walked 4-5 times a week, going a little further everyday, until I was walking up and down hills at the same pace and walking 2 miles at a time. So just keep pushing yourself a little more each time, and your increase your lung capacity and it will get easier and easier, and be so good for your breathing and your heart:)
At least, that was my experience. good luck!

Good afternoon,(in some places), I was diagnosed with asthma when I was in elementry school, ten years old. I was diagnosed with COPD in 2001,August, while I was in the hospital getting my brain operated on. It failed with flying colors, only kidding, it worked and my brain feels fine too.
I get very short of breath just by walking up a hill, a moderately sized hill, you know, not too steep. I have to stop and then use my rescue inhaler(pro - air).
Advair 250/50, in the morning and twelve hours later too. and Spiriva. For the most part, they work. Except when I try to walk up the hill in front of my home,by the time I get to near the top, I'm out of breath. I believe it's the COPD that is causing that. The asthma attacks are very simular.
