I'm not on oxygen yet, but I cough day and night now. That just started recently, so I'm kind of afraid that my emphysema is getting a lot worse. I know walking helps so much and yet I haven't been walking in a long time.

My sister and I both started smoking about the same time and she has been on oxygen for a couple of years now, and I have had lung cancer. It's funny how it effects each of us so differently.

Guess I was diagnosed a while back, but it didn't hit me until I was told to use O2 24/7 in July. Quit smoking in June, after 30+ years, so am now paying the piper. Still pretty much at a loss, despite reading everything I can find. What is a typical day like? How do you do laundry one-handed (because you have the darn POC in the other one)? I don't use the long hoses. Only one short one, because I am a world-class klutz!

In Florida, and too young to be this disabled.

Im on another team called Classy Quitters but lately the conversations there have petered out. We are talking more on here then on that team;)
It's a great team though, just no one posts there anymore hardly. You should join that team too, and Daerjo too! Maybe we could talk there and get others that are already on that team to start talking again:)

I quit going to movie theaters when they were banned, and have only flown twice, and the second time was about 5 years ago. I said I was going to quit so I didn't take any with me, as soon as we were at the first airport to change flights, I went outside and looked for someone smoking and asked a complete stranger for a cigarette! As soon as we got where we were going, I walked to the nearest store, and it was closed, and it was raining! I went back to the hotel and waited for someone to smoke and asked again. The next day I went back to the store and bought some.but what a nightmare that was, all for the want of a cigarette!

I smoked for 33 years-asked for permission as a 16th birthday gift-that and get my ears pierced emoticon I remember airplane flights after they banned smoking on plans-I could go for 6-8 hours but the minute I hit the tarmac I had to have a cigarette. The computer site that helped me in 2000 was from Boston College School of Public Health-much like this site with support groups etc. Also helped you calculate the money you saved. I could not afford to smoke today. I will admit that after smoking is where most of my weight gain came in. Fourteen years later I am ready to tackle that. It was only 4 pounds per year-sorta creeps up on you. So keep trying and if there is any support I can give-Just ask. I know how hard it is. emoticon Remember, every journey starts with the first step.

I smoked for 40 years, 3 packs a day, started at 15. I used to get dizzy and had to lay down to smoke until I got used to it.... crazy or what? I've been quit now for 16 years.

Just keep trying one day you will be able to quit. Instead of trying to remember before you smoked try and figure out what you could do better if you could quit. Maybe a purchase of something nice or a trip with the money saved? I am sure thought that those aren't new ideas.

Daerjo, I think you are absolutely right! I think I have just smoked for so long (49 years) that I don't know how to do anything without a cigarette. One counselor even said to remember how it felt before I started smoking, well I was 11 when I started and I don't remember a time when I didn't smoke!
My triggers are everything also! Coffee, soda, eating, when I wake up, before I go to sleep, when I get in the car, my mother used to say, "you know that car will start without a cigarette" lol'
At least I'm thinking about it again! That's a start:)

Ah, my trigger was being awake. Once I quit I found out that I smoked.... everything else just accompanied that.

Sue, I agree that deep down there is some reason you don't want to quit. It might not necessarily be that you want to keep on smoking but more like the smoking is fulfilling some need that you don't know how to fill other wise.

Just keep trying and keep trying to figure out what smoking is giving you.

I once was where you are at. My husband really wanted me to quit. We tried hypnosis, will power, nicoret. My DR said as long as you keep trying, one time you will succeed. He has the same advice for weight loss along with at older ages to shoot for 1 pound a month. He also said quitting smoking is harder than quitting crack cocaine as there are so many triggers not associated with the nicotine. Mine were-coffee, TV, phone, driving, after I ate. So keep on trying. One day you will succeed. emoticon

Yes, I have tried counseling, once through the employee assistance program through my work, and then later an addiction counselor. I tried Chantix, Zyban, with and without the patch, the nicotine gum, straws, hard candy, Welbutrin, which is the same as Zyban,I went to the "Freedom from Smoking" program, and have a hypnosis tape I listened to everyday for a long time. Believe me, I have tried everything there is out there to try.
Somewhere deep down, I must not really want to quit. I think if I can ever get to that point, I will be able to quit.
Michele, I need to visit Classy Quitters again and talk about this stuff there:) I haven't seen any emails for that team in a long time, and basically forgot about it!

I have to caution you on the ecigs. They aren't any better on a person than the real thing. What all have you tried to quit smoking? Have you tried support groups?

Thank you guys! I am still amazed that it has been 2 years:) Time goes so fast!
My biggest problem right now is that I still smoke. A pack or more a day too. When I first got emphysema I tried everything to quit, but never quit for more than a couple of days. When I got lung cancer, I tried even more, and still couldn't quit. I swore if I went into remission I would for sure quit forever! But I couldn't do it. My son and I are going to try the new ecigarette again. I tried it when they first came out, and it didn't help much at all, but now they are so much better and cheaper! I have to give it a try again soon!

I was on 02 back in 2003 for about 6 months. I was in bad shape. I was able to get off of it but my doc didn't encourage me to exercise. Luckily I changed insurance and also pulmos and got reevaluated. I went to Pulmonary Rehab and have exercised ever since.

I truly believe that exercise and not smoking is the only thing that will help us. Today I walk 30-40 minutes and only stick with that because of pain.

Sue, congrats on being 2 yr cancer free.

When I was diagnosed with COPD in 2000, I spent 6 days in the hospital. Upon discharge, i was sent home with oxygen and on it for 24/7 for 6 weeks. We lived on a cul de sac. The first week I walked around the cul de sac circle. The second week I mad it to the main road. It took six weeks to start walking about 1 mile. The difference is amazing when I exercise and don't. emoticon that you are cancer free for so long. I have lost 6 lbs in 3 weeks with diet change and exercise. Looking forward to keeping it up.

I can do it with your help!

Hi Linda and Hester! I am 60 years old and have emphysema and asthma too. I use Advair and Spiriva, and use albuterol only when needed. 2 years ago I had stage IIIa, lung cancer, and my last chemo and radiation was June 2012, so I have been officially cancer free for 2 years. They say if it is going to come back it usually does within the first 2 years, so I am excited to be celebrating my 2 year mark!
It is very hard to exercise when you can't breathe! I like to walk, and have really noticed a difference, when I walk regularly.I have gone from not being able to walk to the mailbox without getting out of breath, to walking 5 miles, up and down hills, about a month ago!
Since doing that walk with my DD though, I have not been doing anything, and I can really feel the difference in my shortness of breath.
Good luck on your journey! I need to lose at the very least 10 lbs. too, but would like to lose about 20 or more:)

Hi everyone, My name is Linda and I only just joined SP. I am 71 and have COPD, emphysema. I'm not on 02 and only take albuterol as needed. I do yoga and meditation each day (usually) and walk 30-40 minutes.

I live in Las Vegas, just moved here, and I am loving the hot and dry weather.

I would like to connect with other COPDers for support. It's hard to exercise at a level that encourages weight loss. Others just don't understand.

Hello everyone! I had a good time with my GD on Sunday! We went to church then to lunch, then went to my DD's. She stayed with my DD, and I came home and took a nap. Slept all weekend basically, and can't wait to get back to work! Work gives me a reason to get out of bed, and when I'm home, I don't get anything done that I should:)

Hi I am Hester from Melstone Montana. I was diagnosed with COPD in 2000. Spent 6 days in the hospital and 6 weeks on oxygen. Since then I have controlled it with medication. Now I want to go further and lose weight to help. I also have GERD and one aggravates the other. Weight loss will help both.

Hi everyone. My name is Elayne and I've had asthma /copd. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 21 and I'm 65 now. I live in West Central Fl. There are times I have to use my nebulizer 3 times a day and there are other days when I am pretty good. Sometimes it doesn't take much to get SOB and other days I can do a 30 minute work out. I just never know from day to day how I will be or sometimes from hour to hour. Some Drs. have said that this was caused by my being a 7 month baby and my lungs were the last to develop. My Mom had toxemia when she was carrying me and delivered me at 7 months. I am grateful to be alive. My Mom almost died giving birth to me so I am told.

Dealing with COPD is not always easy, but if you take it slow, you'll get to where you want to be. When I started here in 2011, I couldn't even walk a block without gasping for air. I walk between 1 to 2 miles a day, and every day I try to go alittle further.
BTW, I'm Karen from southern Illinois.

Welcome to the team. I'm fairly new to the team and to COPD. If you look at some of the past post there is alot of great info. My husband has asthma and it can be kind of hard during season changes so I hope your doing well through it all.

Hi I'm Kristie and I am in North Augusta, South Carolina. It has only been within the last few years that I was diagnosed. Since have a hard time telling anyone and partly don't believe it myself. I have been sick before and as the team knows when you catch a cold, sinus infection, etc. it is scary. I joined the team because I just sometimes feel like theres no one else who understands and so I looked up COPD in the team section and felt some normalcy in that I'm the only one. I am highly allergic to albuterol so the closest thing I have to an emergency inhalor is symbocort and that is still a 5-15 wait.

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

Hi, I'm Bob from Cape Cod.
Right now I am dealing with COPD,Lung Cancer and Glaucoma. I just had my second surgery for Lung CA and am recuperating. The gym has been a life saver for me. I now have more wind than before I got sick. My Thoracic surgeon also used to train triathletes so he has been pushing for me to go as far as I can, then further. He taught me how to use my rescue inhaler BEFORE exercising strenuously. My other helper is my dog. She insists on at least a 1 mile hike every day, through the woods yet.
I am currently on maintenance as I reached my weight goal a while back. I don't know what's in the future but I plan to keep my health problems at bay as long as possible.

Bob from Cape Cod

Hi...I am Jean. I found out that I have small cell cancer in May of last year. I nearly died after the first chemo treatment but they pulled me back and started the remaining three treatments at 75% to which I have responded well to. I am currently considered in remission but I do have small cell and know what that means. I have a doctor's appointment later today and next CT Scan is next month unless something comes up today. I do fight not losing weight as during chemo I lost down to 103. I try to hold around 121 now. (I have dieted all of my life and this is weird to fight weight loss.) When I joined Sparks originally I weighed 183 lbs. The nutrition problems that I face are my sodium remains low (which is bad)...anybody have any suggestions? I look forward to sharing in this forum.

Hi! My name is Linda. I live in Belton, Missouri and was diagnosed with COPD in 2001. Quit smoking that year after 32 years of smoking. I recently went on oxygen due to consistently low oxygen levels and high heart rates. Doing much better now and have managed to keep my full time job with some adjustments. Most of my exercise is walking with some strength/flexiblity thrown in. Looking forward to meeting and sharing with everyone.

Make this a Healthy Choice Day!

Hello, my name is Verneice. I currently live in Mesa, Arizona, but my goal is to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico. I joined this group because I am challenged with chronic bronchitis on top of life long asthma. I also have many food and environmental allergies as well. I joined SP two years ago when I learned of the food allergies, but the gluten intolerance knocked me down to zero body fat without trying, and I was frustrated by having to enter all of my foods into the tracker. After the rapid weight loss my thyroid did not withstand the shock very well, and I yo-yoed back up to needing to lose 60 pounds. Next I found myself frequently hospitalized, and struggling to fix food and eat it, let alone do any meaningful exercise. Add to all this having spinal injuries due to rear end collisions, and I found myself in a very deep depression. However, with the most recent diagnosis of COPD, my spirit rallied to stop this nonsense, if I can, and to get my life back.

I am fifty years old this past February, and I never imagined that health and survival would be my midlife crisis. All of my leisure activities dancing, gardening, making pottery, sewing, cooking and more have become nearly impossible to do, and I have not been able to find accommodating and suitable employment in two years. I have become shut-in because of my challenges, but these lemons have been turned into juice. I became my own health advocate, turned to natural remedies as much as possible, am losing the extra weight, repairing damage to my skin, and have started my own business. I am back in SP because it is motivating to be able to keep track of my health works in this platform.

I am glad this group exists, and I am looking forward to being a contributing member. Peace, joy, health, and blessings.

Hello my name is John and I have chronic pain and Chronic Bronchitis with Asthma. I was diagnosed in 2000 and have been having trouble breathing while exercising. I usually take a puff of albuterol sulfate(Pro-Air) before I begin working out. I can do all exercises on the machines. The only problem I have is walking fast on the treadmill. So, now I don't try, lol.
I try to walk every day that my back or neck aren't killing me. I have Ulna neuropathies to both arms and sciatica and radiloscapies to both legs. The worst leg is the right one. That stops me from walking for any distance. I, aslo have eight herniated discs four in my neck, three in my thoracic spine and one in the lower lumbar.
I usually do my walking in the morning after I take my pain killer and nerve pain killers. My back begins to hurt badly about three hours into the pain killer course. It's supposed to last six hours.
I live in southeast Westchester county, NY, a stones throw to the Bronx, literally, lol. John

Hi! I'm Nan and I am 55 years old. I have diabetes and COPD. I am overweight and need to loose close to 100 pounds I am sure. It is hard to stay motivated. I work 4 10 hour days a week. So by the time I get home I am exhausted. I hope this will keep me motivated. I will have to start slow and progress I know, and I hate that I have let myself get in this situation. I have been a smoker since I was 16 years old and wish to quit. It is hard to do. emoticon

Hi, I'm Sharon, 58 yrs old with emphysema. I live on Long Island, NY. I quit smoking cigarettes about 2 months ago but use electronic cigs now. I need to get better to show my daughter that I can. She worries too much about me and her dad who has Lewy Body Disease. I need her to know that I can take care of us and this is a start. I can not make enough time to exercise as much as I'd like or even get onto this website but I come when I can. Good luck to you all! I know we can do this!

Hello,
I'm Barb and I live in Tucson, Az. I saw this group while I was browsing and it seemed to be just what I need. I have been diagnosed with asthmatic chronic bronchitis, and it's scary. I've been a smoker since I was a teenager and it has caught up with me. I have numerous other health problems, but I have been cleared by the doctors to do whatever exercise I can stand. That's a good thing. The bad thing is that whenever I try to exercise ( even if it's just walking), I get scared and use that as an excuse to stop. I'm looking for any words of wisdon that will help me get up off my dead butt and start to do better. Thanks for listening.

I'm Sara and I live in Arkport, NY. It is in the Soutern Tier region, below Rochester. I have COPD, sleep apnea, diabetes, and degenerative discs. When I went for my breathing test, my dr. said it was the best one I have ever had. I stay indoors when it is muggy or a lot of pollen is floating around and I use a CPAP machine when I sleep.

God will not give you anything you can't handle.

I just found this group today while I was looking around the site. I am very excited that there are others in my position who want to exercise, but struggle because of COPD. Its my best excuse and my biggest reason I should be walking every day! I was diagnosed 3 years ago with Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Currently I am oxygen 24 hours a day and increase the amount for exercise. Recently moved to the TN area because it is lower in altitude from Colo. Springs. I find that when I exercise I feel better but then get lazy and slack off. Would love someone to say Hey - you sleeping or something - lol. I have been trying to walk 2 miles 3 - 4 times a week and it generally takes me about 45-50 minutes. A couple of years ago I could walk it in 35 - 40 minutes. I let myself be sick and now I'm paying for it. I am young, 49, to be on oxygen 24 hours and that will never change. Trying to keep myself from losing any more strength. Would love to hear from others how you keep yourself positive! emoticon

I just started on the group today. My name is Debbi and I live in Olympia, Washington. I have had asthma and chronic bronchitis since I was little. I am really looking forward to getting to know those of you in this group. I actually like the fact that it is a small group, there may not be a lot of us but we all understand the breathing problems and can encourage each other.

I have a problem with the heat too so I just ordered some tapes called walking at home. One tape is walking one mile, 2nd tape is walking 2 miles and 3rd tape is walking 3 miles. Can't wait to get them in.....then I won't have an excuse not to walk.

Hi Kathy and welcome to the team! My granddaughter and I walked for 3 miles today. In January, I couldn't walk to the bathroom without getting out of breath! This has been an amazing journey-I even walked my first 5k about a month ago. So, keep up the good work-it will pay off!!

Hi everyone! I've come back - just couldn't get myself motivated when I first joined. What has changed? I went shopping yesterday for clothes - oh my! Time to get serious. So I'm planning to start the program and hope we can help each other.

Snuzsuz - thanks for the advice on the videos - I will look at them and begin to do something today!
Beth - I used to live on the other side of the state - Northampton (by Allentown) let's see if we can conquer this battle
Zanygirl - I was born and raised in Ill - just north of Peoria.
To all - I know the small beginning steps lead to success and the ability to do more. Last year my Dr put me on a program of exercise 2ce a week for 1 hr (I had to leave work and go the clinic to do it) I went for 12 weeks and really did notice a big difference in my ability to do things without losing my breath. But the sad part is, once the program was over I couldn't motivate myself to continue the work at home. So now I'm back at ground zero.
A 20 minute walk with lead to more if you are consistent. Maybe with a little help from each other we can succeed at keeping it up!

I started out with just 10 minutes and now I am up to 45, so I can honestly say it will get better! I noticed I can now keep up my pace even up the small hills. I barely could make it up the hills at all a few ago.

Lol. Never too long!
I think that would be great if we had more people to give ideas. I have a hard time with exercises and have to make my walks fairly short, usually not more than 20 minutes at a time. I get winded so easily and can feel it just 5 minutes into the walk. I'm hoping this will get better as I go, but not sure it will.
BUT HOPING FOR THE BEST!!! I know we can do this....just one day at a time!

Hi Karen!
We are a fairly new team. I have so much trouble trying to be consistent in my exercise because I have emphysema so bad that everytime I catch a cold, I end up in bed for a couple of days, and then it takes me awhile to catch back up to where I was before I got sick, so I was wondering if there were others out there like me, and thought we could start a team where we could discuss what works and what doesn't when it comes to COPD.

whew! Sorry that was so long, but WELCOME:)

Welcome! Thanks for joining:)

There are a some exercise demos that you can do at your desk, or indoors, without any equipment. Check out sparkpeople fitness demos and videos. They have a great 10 minute cardio kickboxing workout that began using at home when it is too cold or wet to go outside. I think you will be able to find something you can do!

Unfortunately, I'm in Wisconsin, which means almost half of the year, it is too cold to be outside. I love warm weather and sunshine. This has been an unbelivably cold spring - it's only in the 40's today and very windy, so once again, I'm sitting at the computer instead of outside walking.
