Yes, I have an ex-husband who put all of our bills into a paper bag under the kitchen sink, which I found after we had split up. I was really stupid and he convinced me to put everything like utilities etc. into my name and than he didn't pay them. I had to voluntarily take my car down and turn into the dealer because due to health reason I could not work at that time and he had not paid it in 4 months. It took me years to get those bills paid off but I did it.
However, now I am in the process of filing for bankruptcy. I was in an accident 9 months ago and am buried in medical bills. I did not have medical insurance and the hospital is refusing to accept my payment that I could make and so they are pretty much forcing me into it. I am a single mom and if they get a judgment and garnish my wages than we will not be able to survive. It was a really hard decision for me because I have always tried to pay my bills to the best of my ability. I do believe that bankruptcy should be one's last and only option. Too many people take that way out again and again during their life time. I have seen where people file every seven years like clock work, and I believe that is an abuse of the system. I do know that it will be on your credit report for 10 years. I would give anything to not have to file.
I think it is important to go into cautiously and with a full understanding as to what it will mean. There are many attorneys out there that will give you a free consultation and than you can decide if that is what will work for you.
Hope this was helpful.
