Hurray! Congrats on your endorsment and first bike! My name is Becky and I learned to ride in a Team Oregon training course, probably similar to the MSF course you and your husband took. I had trouble learning to stop my bike and almost didn't pass, but I made it. My husband bought me a new '98 Vstar (that's how long ago I started riding!), and we've had so many great times and adventures since then. You are going to love experiencing the journeys ahead on two wheels!! =D

Hello, my name is Barb. I'm 37, married, mother, and newbie biker chick in Tampa, Florida.

I took a MSF Beginner's Course in February so my husband and I could get our motorcycle endorsements. It's been his dream to have a motorcycle again by 50 and we made it. He turned 50 Feb. 29th this year (okay so he didn't actually get a birthday, but he's still 50 years old!)

I had never touched a motorcycle, or driven a manual car. It was quite a learning curve for me. Hubby finished at the top of the class, but of 8 I finished 5th, and was least experienced going in. That was a big confidence booster for me.

2 days after the course we bought 2 used bikes from a local dealership. I got a 2006 Honda Rebel 250, he got a 2001 Suzuki VL800 Intruder.

It has taken me several weeks to get used to it. I've spent hours riding around my neighborhood getting used to shifting gears and not stalling when I stop. I had a small crash in my drive way a few weeks ago too, but me and the bike were fine, just some bruises and scratches. I also witnessed the immediate aftermath of a fatal motorcycle crash. So I had to fight some nerves.

Last weekend I successfully rode 90 miles on my own bike with only 1 stall all day long. Looking forward to riding it again this weekend =)

I have discovered though that I really need to lose weight and get back in shape. Getting on the back of my husband's bike is challenging and I know that both of our bikes will handle better if I manage to lose some weight. Plus I will have more stamina for longer rides.

Thanks for the welcome Darlene!

I can ride the StreetGlide as long as I don't have to get it out of 1st gear. lol

I want to learn how to ride, however, the streets/highways here in Southern California can be a bit dangerous. He's had a few accidents and that's left him feeling like it wouldn't be good for me to ride. Maybe one day...

For now, I enjoy being the passenger and just getting to relax and enjoy myself!

I met Julian when I was going to school in Corpus Christi, then we moved to Austin. We had a lot more riding days there! It's so beautiful where we live now, lots of twisty, scenic roads, close to the mountains, wine country and the ocean, but man, winters are long!

Hi! My name is Becky and I've joined Sparkpeople because a fellow biker hangs out here and this is working for him. I rode my own since 1998 starting with a Vstar 650. I had to quite because of carpal tunnel syndrome. I had the surgery done and it worked, but now I have trigger thumb on both hands and am working to clear this up. So, I am back to being a passenger on my husband Julian's bike, which is how I got into motorcycling when we were dating back in 84'
We love riding in Northwest Oregon and going on long bike trips whenever possible. It's been too cold and wet to do any riding lately, but hopefully we can manage a short ride once a month until the weather gets better.
Geeze, I don't know how to show my Sparkpage on this post.

emoticon Hello! I am new to this site but not to SP. I do not have my own bike but I love riding on the back of my boyfriends bike. He has a Yamaha Roadstar. Right now I work full time and take care of my terminally ill mother. We ride when we get a chance. I hope we can ride some this weekend even if it is for just a short ride. Sure could use some wind therapy! I look forward to chatting with everyone and hearing about your adventures and progress!

Yay!! Two of my favorite things combined... SparkPeople and motorcycles!! My name is Janet and I live in Nenana, a small village in Interior Alaska, about 60 or so miles south of Fairbanks. I'm just getting back into the SparkPeople thing after being away for a couple years. I had lost almost 80 pounds before, but things happened and I gained it all back and it brought friends. It's time to evict everyone!! I used to ride a long time ago as a passenger because I "wasn't allowed" to ride my own... Well, two divorces and another marriage later (hey, some of us take more than once to find the right one!), I convinced my husband to buy a motorcycle after listening to him wish for one for years. The deal was, if he bought one, I would too and learn to ride, because there was no way in hades I riding on the back of his! So last year, he bought a 2005 Honda Shadow Aero 750 Silver over Pearl and rode it for a couple months. I fell in love with that bike and he wouldn't give it to me, so I found one exactly like it, but a different color, Black over Dark Cherry, less miles, and less price (giggle) and bought it! This past January while were we in the city (Anchorage) we popped into the Harley Outpost just to look around. He sat on a few of the bikes in the showroom and then he saw Her... a 2012 Heritage Softail Classic in Vivid Black with all the chrome details and leather side bags and stunning white-wall tires. He sat on her and picked his feet up and there he sat, perfectly balanced. That was it, he was in love. Of course he hemmed and hawed about buying her, but I didn't have to push too hard! He traded his Honda in on her and we drove down with the truck in March and hauled her home where she languished in the garage across the street until May 6th and he and a neighbor chipped ice for 6 hours to make a path out to the main road, so we could get the bikes out. It was 36 degrees!! We didn't care!! I love riding my Honda Shadow, but there's a White Hot Pearl Heritage Softail Classic in the showroom that's calling me... perhaps soon!

Before you can commit to the future, you must come to terms with the past.

The only constant you will have in your life is your relationship with yourself.

Brightest Blessings
WytchHazyl

Just found this group a few minutes ago (thanks to a Sparkfriend of a Sparkfriend).

I'm Cathy and live and ride in South Western Oregon, between Grants Pass, on I-5, and Brookings, OR /Crescent City CA.

I've had a successful relationship with Spark since October 2012 and have lost & kept off 18 pounds. My 60-year-old bod seems to be happy at this weight . . . so I've been maintaining for 4 months. Planning to give it a few more months before deciding if I want to drop some more.

Although hubby isn't an 'official' Sparker, he's lost 25 pounds by making adjustments with me during my Spark journey.

I began riding back in the 70's but had to sell my bike in the early 80s. I spent 25 years drooling everytime I saw a bike, but circumstances just did not offer the option to ride again. Until I met my sweetie 4 years ago. He had a couple bikes (Suzuki Intruder & Honda 750 w/sidecar) and I was elated!

Hubby is a below-knee amputee (left leg) and had a bad right knee . . . and since we ride all the time, he was getting concerned. So, 3 years ago, after he told me he wasn't sure how long he'd be able to keep up with the precarious balancing act (2 tugboats riding on 2 wheels, with 1 peg-leg & 1 bad knee) we started looking for a more stable platform. We started by checking out conversion kits for our existing bikes, then ran the whole gammit of what's out there.

That's how we came to buy our first Can Am Spyder (RT touring model). Then, it took me all of 2 weeks to realize that I wanted a RS (sport model). So, we put on over 40,000 miles in a couple years. After hubby had a right knee replacement last year, we sold the RT and just replaced it with a BMW C650 GT. I still have my RS and absolutely love it.

All that to say, we both love to ride.

If you're planning on coming through our area, I hope you'll let me know. We'd love to show off some of our country and favorite rides.

Hi I am new to the group but not to Sparkpeople.

I started riding when I was in High School. In IL. my bike was my primary ride.
25 years ago moved to South Texas and gave it up. Got married and kids just did not have time any more.

5 weeks ago my son got me/DH a Yamaha 650. He has a Triumph my husband and him share. After 25 years I am not as confident but I try to ride everyday just short trips.

My goal is to lose 30lbs before summer so I will look like great on my ride.
Oh I am a librarian so I try to be low key.

Hi, I am new to this Spark Team. I found it last night. I am 52 years old, I live in North Western, WV. I ride a 1999 Suzuki Intruder Trike. I love to ride. I ride mostly by myself. My Husband used to ride til a Deer hit him, yes the Deer hit him and he went down. He had a lot of road rash and a broken Heel. He said it was just never the same after that. So he sold his dream Motorcycle. He had bought a brand new 2000 Harley. He had talked about wanting one for years. The wreck just did him in. I told him go ahead and sell yours but I am keeping mine. I ride to my Mom's an hour away. I ride to Church sometimes. To the Dr. Just anytime I can. To cold here to ride and to much Snow and ice. Better weather coming soon.

Hi Everybody. I ride a Yamaha TTR 225 dirt bike and my husband races (for fun) a Yamaha 250. We just got 2013 Harley Fatboy for Christmas and we absolutely adore it. I was raised by a father that hated motorcycles, so I was never allowed on a bike. The minute I moved out at 22 (I'm 49 now) I got a dirt bike. I'm really excited to now be in the street bike rider, well passenger, category. I'm a Southern California native, and traffic around here is a cluster, but my husband grew up on street bikes and he's 56 and a cautious rider, so that's a good thing.

I joined SP yesterday. I sure don't want to look like a Shriner on the back of the Harley, so I'm taking care of that now!!

Take care, Sandy

Hello, Iím Lisa from Central Florida. Iím actually only a passenger at this point Ė my husband has a Honda VTX 1300 Ė but when we bought the Honda for him, I inherited his Yamaha V Star 650. Unfortunately, I donít have my endorsement yet, although I have practiced with the bike. So far Iíve only gone back and forth in the street in front of my house because I donít have a permit yet, either. So, my goal is to take the class and get my endorsement by the end of the year.

You know, living in Florida, I should make the goal to have my endorsement by Biketoberfest, since I do actually work in Daytona Beach....

Hi, I'm Linda from Toano, Virginia. In spite of my username, I ride a 1999 Honda VFR800. My late husband got me into motorcycling, and I've been riding for 20 years.I have two sons, 22 and 16, and they ride too. They have to, with all the bikes my husband left behind - 2007 Suzuki V-Strom, 1984 Honda VFR, 1970 Triumph Bonneville, the list goes on!

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Yes Bud, I do know....several folks I have talked to have bought the Spyders with the
dual wheels in front and say they are more stable........
I'll tell you a secret, I don't really want a 3 wheeler or a kit....when we cant ride, then
I am voting on a brand new pickup....................lol

Hey Darlene,

Buying a kit for a thee wheeler is a good idea. As cool as I think a three wheeler looks I feel they are not as safe as a regular motorcycle. My wife doesn't know this but even if I had the money to buy one I wouldn't buy it. haha Don't tell my wife, OK? I might borrow a bit to buy a new bike but I've gotta sell my Connie first.

Ride safe my friend.

Bud

I have lost 6 pounds. Though I am not trying as hard as I feel I should I am very happy about the weight loss. Good luck to all of you.

Hey Bud,

Well you are amongst friends here. I am retired as well as my DH...which is a good thing.
We like to go do stuff together.

We cant afford a 3 wheeler either.........laughing here...............we co-own our Harleys with
H-D credit....LOL.....

However, one question, wonder if you could get by cheaper by putting a kit on the bike you
have and coverting it to a 3 wheeler???? I know it can be done...we have looked at sites on
the internet..........just saying.............

Hi Darlene,

Thank you for your warm welcome. A three wheel Harley would be one nice ride. My wife wants me to buy one but no way I could afford one. Been retired for almost 9 years and don't make any where near the money I used to. I don't miss working though.haha

Ride safe my friend.

Hi everyone. My wife and I spend about 8 months a year in the Philippines and about 4 months a year in Michigan. As beautiful as there are I don't miss the winter months. I stopped riding when I was about 32 years old; wife, young children and lots of responsibility. I missed riding over the years and often thought about getting another bike but never did until about 3 years ago. I bought an old Honda Silverwing Interstate a coworker suggested would be a good bike for me to start with. I rode the bike about one year then decided I wanted a newer bike. I bought a 2004 Yamaha V-Star 1100. This was the first cruising bike I had ever owned. It had a small windshield that did little to protect me. A couple of friends and I rode 950 miles in two days. When I got back my left shoulder hurt me for about six weeks and my butt was killing me. I sold that bike and bought a 2003 Kawasaki Connie. This bike is really a bit much for me. I'll soon be 68. My wife still loves riding with me. Bikes I'm drooling over now are the Honda NT700V and NC700X but I have to sell the Connie before I can buy one. I hope to do some long distance touring with my wife. Ride safe my friends.

Bud

Welcome Doug to the group. Some great bikes you and your girlfriend have. I have found this Website good for my reasons to better health. I like to take long road-trips and getting in better condition really helps for endurance.
If you have ride plans and would like to share I started a thread for people to post their ride plans. For myself I put on about 12000 mile each year. The largest chunk of miles is with the Run For The Wall which contributes to about 8000 miles with the remaining miles filled in with the Oregon Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) and with 2 clubs I belong to.
Be safe and take care...good luck to you guys with your goals.

Welcome to the group Theresa. It is great to have your dream bike. Although I love my bike '05 Royal Star Tour Deluxe I still dream about all the other shinny bike.
I take long road-trips so having a good touring bike is great. I decided to go on a weight loss program for similar reasons as you and your husband, I wanted to look better on the bike coupled with feeling healthier, and having the endurance for 400 to 600 mile days. For the last 3 years I have done the Run For The Wall (RFTW). I live in the Portland Or. area and the start of the run is near Los Angeles the to Wash. DC. Before the run is over I will have put close to 8000 miles.
Hope you get all the rides you are looking to do for 2012. I started a thread about ride plans for 2012 that you may want to look and see what others are doing. Be safe and take care.

Hello, I'm Theresa and new to this group.
I live in Murrells Inlet, SC, just south of Myrtle Beach, but grew up in Chillicothe, Ohio. I've been around bike rallies most of my life and love them!
I have a 2004 HD Sportster XL 1200 Custom, Glacier White Pearl, my favorite color.
This will be the third time in four or five years that I have tried to lose weight with SparkPeople.
Growing up my husband and I were both totally fit and very athletic. It is hard knowing what I used to be and comparing that image to what I see in the mirror. When the scales got stuck in the past I would throw in the towel and say "Oh well". But not this time, I think I have a lot of motivation to stick with it this time.
My HD is my dream bike and it has all the extras I wanted, my husband is about to buy his second bike which is also his dream bike, a Goldwing Aspencade. I hate that we will both have our beautiful dream bikes and look like big fat slobs when we ride. My hope is that by reading stories of life on their bikes and working to reach their own goals from the members in this group, it will continue to inspire me to work hard to reach for my goals. My husband is working to lose weight with me this time so hopefully that will also help. Best wishes to all of you as you work towards your goals and ride safe! emoticon

New guy from Wisconsin here. I ride a Road King Classic, Black Cherry/Black Pearl 2-tone. Love that bike! I got my GF a Dyna Super Glide, we love riding together. Still working on getting her experience and going distances.

I rode a '81 Honda 900f Supersport in High school sold that when I moved to Colorado for schooling. It feelsgood to be back on the bike 25 years later. (25 springs of bike fever with no bike...)

Hi! I'm Emma from Charleston, SC. I grew up around motorcycles since my Dad has about 5 of them in all different makes and styles. The best was the Harley with the sidecar. My nieces and nephews get to have fun with that now. I missed motorcycles after leaving home so back in May of 2011 I got my own! I have a Suzuki SV650 and it's been a blast being the one in front! What's even better is I can ride pretty much year round here in Charleston. Took the bike to work Monday! emoticon

Hello all,

New to the team but have been on SP off and on for a few years. Started riding three years ago. First bike was a yamaha v-star 650 custom. This past december bought a 2011 Victory Kingpin 8-ball. What a difference. Love to ride just need it to be a bit warmer here in Chicago.

Been good this year as I rode through most of december but now the temps are getting a little too low.

Time to start again.

Hi all!
My name is Judy and I'm so excited to have found this team! I grew up riding with my Uncle and caught the love of being on a bike at the early age of 12. So long as my feet hit the pegs, I had on jeans, appropriate shoes and a helmet Mom was happy and so was I! My DH got his license in 2002 and his first bike was a Yamaha 1100. We quickly traded it in for his Road Star which was much better for riding 2 up. I got my license in 2003 and had a Yamaha 1100 Custom for a short time. After a long time of trying to get pregnant, we finally did and had our son in 2007. As a new mom I was worried about leaving DS behind if something happened and we sold my bike. In the past year or two I've started to ride with DH again and am thinking about getting a trike at some point in the future so our son can ride with us and I don't have to be worried about having to lean and all that stuff regular bikes do.

DH and I are Officers and members of a couple Chapters in our area of Northern CA. The organization is International and called STAR Touring and Riding. While it is initiated from Yamaha we have many different bikes that are part of our Chapters. There is a Chapter for just about every place you live so if you are looking for a group to ride with, let me know! DH and I are part of the Hayward Fault (Alameda County) and Contra Costa Chapters but there are many more where these come from, too!

Wendy,
I used to have this Cutlass Supreme, and my BFF wanted to go to Louisiana, then come thru
Tupelo to visit her her bro.&family. SIL says whatever you do, if you come up the Trace, dont
speed. So the interstate was rough as a cob, and I looked at the map, thinking I could cut off a lot of miles by taking a little blacktop over to the Trace....well, heck, we saw 4 vehicles, and
I got on it(how much I am not saying in public)LOL.....and we pulled in their driveway about
suppertime. Turns out regular police don't patrol the Trace as it is a FEDERAL highway, so the Forest Rangers have that little job....and the minimum fine for speeding 1 mile over, was
$500. This is why the SIL did not want us speeding..................................
................oops......

Was fun tho....

Hi. My name is Wendy. I live in Florida with my husband. I ride a 2006 Softail Deluxe. LOVE IT. Our longest trip, so far, was the Natchez Trace - our honeymoon in 2008. With my folks who also ride. We want to do the Dragon Tail as well..... I miss riding in the Rocky Mountains when I lived in Colorado. This December will be my fifth year in FL.

Hey Carl,
Cordele is almost to the bottom of Georgia....way below Hotlanta..............

We are get lots of thunder and there is a tornado warning for the bottom of the county
SW of us.....one was spotted out by Barber Sports a few minutes ago and they have
Birmingham sirens going off right now..................

The winds are getting rough here, so I probably better get off here for a while.....last week
when we had all these stupid storms we lost power like 4 times and had to set all the clocks
n stuff.........

We had a very good ride up to Ft. Payne yesterday, but I am still sore...having back
problems ...................

Blessings,
Darlene

Hello,
Been on SP for a while and love that I feel like I am getting my life back in order. I have been riding for 3 years but I didn't ride last year because I got hit and it scared the crap out of me. I just recently got back on and am so grateful I did. I ride a 2005 GSXR 600. I got tired of being the passenger and bought my own. I live in FL so I get to ride most of the year.

Sometimes buddy, divorce is a good thing. I happened
to be on the losing end, lost everything but my kids
but it was worth it to get out of that mess.
And let no one ever say it is always the guy who
does wrong...because that is not true.

Where do you live that you have such a monsoon ???
LOL

Welcome to the group Octane. We live in Alabama and
get to ride almost all year round, aside from the
occaisonal tornado or rainstorm ....

This is a very supportive group, so let us know how
we can help you get to goal.

I ride a 2010 Softail Deluxe and DH rides a Heritage
(2010)...gotta love those bikes....

Sorry about the divorce/been there and done that. I
know it takes a while to deal with it, but move
forward as best you can. We are always around to
lend a shoulder for support.

Blessings,
Darlene

Hi my name is Michelle and I live in Oregon. I received my endorsement in June of this year after taking the Basic Rider Training program. I have a Honda Shadow 600, a hand me down from my husband. When I got the endorsement, he got the new bike! I have been on some short rides with him (meaning I rode my own bike) but am still unsteady and not enough confidence to do longer rides. My tags expired in August, so I am waiting until next year to get back on and get better. Yesterday we did a nice poker ride with me on the back of the bike. It rained little, but the rest of the day was nice. I have issues with turns and curves and need to work on those. (One of those curves I had a nice drive into a ditch!) Not a major crash, just a nice gentle ride. emoticon But all was fine and I was not hurt. Though I think I gave my husband a few gray hairs. I am getting to know other bikers, both male and female so I can become a better rider.

Every day may not be good, but there is good in every day.~Author Unknown

Ahoy there two wheelers! I have been on SP for a couple weeks and I really enjoy feeling like I'm taking care of myself and being healthy. I'm also enjoying being honest when I am bad, so that I can see what is really going on.

Dad gave me a motorcycle when I was 7 and I loved them ever since. Up until a couple months ago I was always a solo rider, but my wife of one year and I decided to get a V-twin and cruise together! It has been something that we really connect on and enjoy.

It makes me feel good too to be on a newer machine, I have always ridden 70's bikes, and now we are on a 2007 Suzuki Boulevard! It is definitely a sweet machine.

Keep riding, be safe, and be healthy.

Welcome Melissa! I'm in Utah. Our "in 5 years or less" goal is to ride the Tail of the Dragon and visit Arlington. Maybe we will see ya on the road. Glad you're here.
