Vibeke I try to now limit my fat source to one per meal. Breakfast I'll have a smoothie or oatmeal and add 1 tbsp of peanut butter and some flax. For lunch I'll either add 1/4 cup seeds, 1 - 2 tbsp olive oil or tahini or 1/2 a small avocado - only one of those fats, same for dinner. So I'm still getting my healthy fats just not all of them at every meal.

Now if only I could control how much bread I have (I love it with avocado and basil, earth balance and rosemary or peanut butter and marmite - lol so many downfalls!)

Yesterday was a perfect day, calories in check and close to 2 hours of hard gardening. Today I will be on campus where my son goes, so will be sitting most of the time. It will be another rainy day ugh. I can't wait till spring is over.

I am still trying to figure out how to lose weight for Me that I can life with. Since I have always had a weight problem I have tried everything. From my past history going low carbs worked the best. I was down to 18% bodyfat at age 44 before I went Vegan. I ate mostly chicken breasts, veggies, 2 fruits and 2 dairies a day, but it was so easy because I ate every couple hours and still managed to keep nutrition balance at a 40/40/20 ratio.

However I will never go back to eating meat again just out of vanity.

I have tried all arrangement of vegan diets and was most successful with a Raw diet, but I just can't afford it where I am living year around. Once I get back it Tucson in the summer of 2014 then I will be able to handle it. At least be 75% raw.

Diets like Dr McDougall are not for me. Although I love eating beans and potatoes, I don't lose any weight on them. When I did the Raw vegan diet I lost 8 pounds right away and then continue to lose another couple a week, but came back to IL and couldn't keep up the program.

When eating raw it is at least 50% fat and we used a lot of cold press oils, nuts and seeds of course. It is the very best diet, but also the most difficult to stay on. Zero grains is the way to go for me (outside of them sprouted)

Good point Kelly. I like Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's Rules - the E2 Diet.
Avoid: anything with a face or a mother, dairy, all oils, refined grains, nuts

Honestly I don't think I would want them to come up with one. Their vegetarian one is so dependent on dairy there is no way someone could lose weight.

Thank you so much for this. I was just commenting on Facebook five minutes ago that there is a reason I'm not a slender vegan (cue recipe sharing of a nut based ice cream). My friend Tonya is always telling me that while my links for recipes look amazing, she'd gain weight if she ate what I ate. There is a reason I'm not losing!

I agree, vegan does not equal low fat, or even healthy. I was in a better place before I discovered vegan treats... Like IMVEGAN says desserts should be rare.

My problem isn't the treats, it's portion sizes. I don't snack because I know I will still eat too much at "mealtime". I also love fats, I don't have a lot of nut butters but I eat the nuts, seeds and avocados if I have them in the house (and of course 1/4 cup of pumpkins seeds is a great source of zinc...). I try to keep it under 30% of my total calories but when the hub bakes a good bread it's hard not to reach for some earth balance or PB. I have managed somehow to stay in about the range when I lost weight switching to vegan but I would love to let go of another 10 - 15#

I have a problem with nut butters too. Great advice in that article. Thanks IMVEGAN.

What a great article. While I don't 100% buy into zero oil I loved the suggestions here. Just because it's vegan doesn't mean it's healthy. I will admit to having a problem with nut butters. I think I need to quit buying them for a while. emoticon

Here is a great blog from Happy Herbivore about losing weight on a Vegan Diet. I found this to be so true. There are so many ways to get stuck by hidden foods or high calorie dense foods or when you start drinking your calories (smoothies). Eating plant strong deserts is also a no-no. Even if they are fat free and the recipe is in a Happy Herbivore book or Dr. Esselstyn blog. Deserts are for rare occasions and not for everyday if you want to lose weight. Being aware of these things really helped me get to my goal.
