Hi I am looking for help and advice I am new to SP and finding my away around, three weeks ago I began the induction phase and trying to figure out why I am losing very slowly, I am sticking to the plan, eating about 20 carbs a day, 1,200-1,500 calories with not much exercise. SOS Rose

James - thanks for the recipe link - sounds delish!

Jazzy - reading all you can about lowcarbing is so important. Different authors may give you different insights. Then you can put it all together for yourself. The library is a great resource. Let us know if we can help you.

JAZZYGF,
Here is a recipe for cinnamon pecan muffins, 3 grams of carbs per muffin. Perfect when warmed in the microwave at midnight with a melted pad of butter on top:

Hey laura, I have not gotten back on it yet. I am still losing weight though. I have just been eating more fruits and veggies. Also watching my portions. Low carb is a love/hate relationship for me, I can do well on it for a few days and lose a few pounds, but then I just break it and start eating carbs again. I made it to 9 days 2 weeks ago, that is the longest for me. The few times that I lost a lot of weight, it was due to eating less and working out more. So I am just gonna give that a shot and not get mad when the weight doesn't fly off. I just wanna make healthier habits and make them stick. I am over the yoyo dieting I usually do. I do notice though that when I eat not as many carbs I feel better and have more energy, so I am trying to keep that in mind. Good luck and keep me posted on your journy. P.S. what is a fat fast?

How did the weekend go, Holly? I just read through all your posts here... you sound very much like me (fit, even though overweight, busy single mom) so I thought I would touch base. I have been off the low carb for a month, and feel awful! Funny how one little thing can send one spiraling out of control. lol. I am doing a 5 day Fat Fast (starting today) to get myself back on track.

Thank you I needed that, because I dont want to give up I want to keep losing this weight. I did eat carbs this weekend but I got back on it yesturday. Happily I did not over do it with the carbs and gain everything back. I gained back like 3 pounds and thats it. Whew!. I also tried to do jillian michaels 30 day shred on Atkins and I threw up lol. It was so pathetic, I was like you do so much cardio yet cant handle some strength exercises. Those dvds are only 20 mins long. I am glad I got back on this though. Because my body does feel a lot better when eating this way. Thank you again for the support.

IRISHHOLLY85,

Marathon training? When switching from carb burning to fat burning (ketosis), and hopefully one's own reserves of fat rather than dietary fat, the switch in body chemistry to do so takes a few weeks, with the first few days being the hardest, even being named "the Atkins flu".

If you do strenuous exercise before your body chips try is ramped up for using fat then it may turn to your own muscle first for fuel. I'd wait a month into low carb before any exercise.

Don't feel too bad. A lot of us will eat whatever goes down and stays down when we're sick. Our family specialty is saltine crackers and milk. Not exactly Atkins-friendly, but it works!

well I made it 9 days and caught a cold around day 7, so I slipped yesturday ....and carried over to today. I have lost 9 lbs so far. But holy cripes when I dont feel good (head cold plus vomitting) the last thing I want is meat cheese and veggies. Plus I can't just go lay down I am a single mom of three kids that I have to take care of. So I had a fresco bean burritto and finally got a little energy. Today I had nuts and an apple for breakfast, then a pita sandwich for lunch. SO yes carbs but I didn't go insane. honestly I didnt want french fries or candy I just wanted something to give me energy and not make me throw up. My next step, get some rest today after I drop the kids off at their dad's and then pick back up with the low carb. But I am gonna add nuts and beans. I also havent had any energy for marathon trainning...thats not good.

I so agree with the salt and magnesium advice.

IRISHHOLLEY85, congratulations. At day 7 you are over the hardest hurdle. From here on your strength comes back and your body chemistry gets better and better at burning fat, either your own, or fat that you eat. I remember about 2 months into low carb eating that when dinner was delayed I wasn't ravenously hungry like before, just a little bit. I was happily thinking, burn that body fat, you can wait a little to eat.

wow that is so helpful....but thats pickle juice without the whiskey shot right??? lol I tried that a few weeks ago so gross. but I can totally stomach pickle juice. My legs started hurting during my walk last night.

I feel so good about atkins, I am on day 7. I am so proud of myself I havent broke it even once yet. And I hate my taco salad without beans and fritos last night. That was a huge deal. It wasnt even that hard to pass it up either.

I feel the same way about the buns too.

by the way, I just read today that if you drink pickle juice it will help leg cramps, also tummy troubles like reflux, which I rarely have anymore, or heartburn, etc.

Ordering things without the bun will become second nature, I don't even miss the bun anymore. If anything, I feel like I really taste my food now since the bread isn't covering up the fillings.

Make sure you have the foods that you will need in your fridge. I found that taking 1/2 tsp of Morton Lite Salt in some water helped with leg cramps at night, plus I take a magnesium tablet before I go to bed.

Read all of the older posts and read, read and read.

Thank you so much guys for all the support, that means so much to me. I just went to a pub for lunch with my man. I ordered a bunless philly steak and a side salad. IRISHHOLLY85,
I too started low carb to loose weight, then my plan was that things would return to normal.

As the body fat came off I realized that I didn't want to return "to my fat normal self". I'm totally committed to low carb as a lifestyle, especially after it allowed me to stop 10 years of diabetes medications.

Get rid of bread, pasta, rice, etc. unless you need to keep a few of those things around for spouse or children. Pre-cook steak, chicken, shrimp, etc. and that way you can just grab a container to pack for work with some salad greens. Also, I found that you can throw veggies into a plastic container with a little water and steam it in the microwave by leaving one side of the top popped open. Pre-planning is necessary since most snacks at vending machines and stores are high carb.

IRISHHOLLY85,
a bunch of good advice here. The headache possibilities are something my wife experienced. One could take some headache medication, but the real problem seems to be a salt issue, so have some salt ready just in case.

First few days to a week are the hardest in shifting away from using carbs as fuel to using protein and fat. You may feel weak or dizzy during the first few days of transition, but stick with it, it takes time for your body chemistry to retool.

I buy liquid splenda in one ounce bottles because it is pure sucralose. Splenda is mixed with different forms of sugars in order to make it measure cup for cup. Those sugars alter the taste and increase the gas problems because most of the additions are maltodextrin.
Sweetzfree is available on line, is easy to carry with you and has no after taste. It's also very easy to mix into ice tea or other cold drinks when powder will not melt. Sweetzfree.com has the best price I have found.
"Better than boullion" is great to drink a couple cups a day during induction to prevent that draggy feeling you get when you are switching over from burning carbs to burning your butt! It comes in several flavors in a jar rather than those cube processed things.
If you find you're missing crunchie crackers you can pick up some pork rinds for 0 carbs, either spicy or bbq flavor. You can also make cheese cracker crisps by grating harder cheeses, like parmesan or hard cheddar, lay wax paper on sheet pan, 425 oven. Just make a silver dollar size pile of grated cheese about 1/4" high and bake it until the cheese melts and bubbles around the edges. The crisps should start to brown around the edges so you know it is set. Remove from oven and let rest on baking sheet until cool. You can add desired dried herbs to go into the cheese crisps. Make it up as you go along!

During n diction, I really do not believe in cheese. At most one small serving of hard cheese. The first two weeks are the hardest, once they are done, it really gets pretty easy.

If you have trouble toughing out those first few days, remember that calories don't count for much on low carb. Keep plenty of induction-friendly munchies on hand to help you hold out against cravings until the sugar is out of your system. If you can make it to the one-week mark you'll probably be over the worst of it and for the most part will be free of cravings and hunger.

Drink your water! Really, really important.

Make sure you're getting enough salt. The energy drop and headaches some people get on the first two weeks are usually associated with salt loss. You've been retaining POUNDS of extra water for years, and when it leaves it takes a bunch of sodium with it. Broth is a good thing to keep on hand.

Eat fat! At long last, fat is GOOD for you, not bad! Rejoice!

Just make sure you are prepared with the right kinds of foods to start Phase I. I remember always keeping cheddar cheese around. The fat satisfied my brain for quite a few hours actually. And if I was out and about running errands for the day, I could stop by a Quik Trip and grab a cheese stick, and I would get an iced tea there by the fountain drinks. (I carry my stevia sweetener with me in my purse.)

Just pop in here and let us know how you are doing. And keep reading the older posts here for info. Check out low carb books from the library. Read, read, read. And actually, I found a lot of helpful videos on Youtube. Look to the right of this page - you will find a Links icon. Click on it, and you will find more information.

Good luck!

Have lots of legal snacks ready to eat. Sliced ham to roll up. Celery with cream cheese, Hard boiled eggs. Advance planning is half the battle. Don't wait for hunger to decide what to eat.
