I just cheated. I make a rule with myself that if I have a craving that I will eat my low carb meal first and eat it if I still want it after that. Well, I still really wanted it! I got some dark chocolate covered almonds and milk. It's weird because there was no emotional trigger. Yesterday was my birthday and I didn't feel the need to eat out or have cake or anything. I didn't feel like I was missing anything. I've had a mild chocolate craving for about a week and it finally got out of hand. I scratched the itch. I'm not going to beat myself up about it because I've been doing so well. But, why did that happen when my cravings have been so much better since keeping my carbs below 25? Still a work in progress. Back on plan tomorrow.

WOW! Great Loss! I find it more meaningful to count carbs instead of calories. I just looked up the carbs in a DQ blizzard . . . and believe me . . . I am NOT going to eat THAT! Connie

Sheltie- I am a bit skeptical as well, although all my symptoms match what she says, and Dr. Interweb seems to agree. I don't know, seems worth a try. And yes, I can have nuts (except peanuts), so I am getting much of my fats and calories from them. So what you said is exactly what I am doing.... following the diet without the legumes and grains. And yes, it has been a challenge so far and it has only been two days! lol. Mainly, I just don't want to eat anything, since I can't really have anything that appeals to me. I still eat, of course, but I am not really enjoying it at all.

The plan IS to reintroduce foods after the three week elimination period (time for the gut to begin healing, they say) and see how the added foods make me feel. It is possible that I might be able to even get rid of some of my current allergies... we'll see.

Hi Laura,

Boy, that stinks! I'm admittedly a bit skeptical about aspects of "leaky gut syndrome," but do believe that people can have allergies to certain foods (but you are probably not allergic to all of the foods that you have to eliminate for now and may be able to add some back in later).

It sounds like you have to do a modified paleo diet. You can still eat chicken, fish, veggies, coconut oil, shiritake noodles, protein powder that's "approved", butter (since it has very little dairy protein). Can you have nuts? I would think you'd want to avoid peanuts since that can cause inflammation in some people, but you may still be able to have macadamia nuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. Can't you get enough calories and nutrition without eating legumes and grains and still follow her plan? It would be challenging, but not impossible.

Thanks Sheltie and Theresa... definitely stuff to consider! I will watch that video when I have a moment. I wondered about that... the super low NET carbs in Atkins foods versus total carbs. Seems to good to be true.

I was through a diet curve ball today... went to see a Naturopathic Doctor about some of my inflammation issues, numerous allergies, and various other things. She says I clearly have Leaky Gut Syndrome. Essentially it means that my intestines are "leaking" toxins, waste and food proteins into my bloodstream. This is bad news. She has put me on a special Anti-Inflammatory Diet, and wants me to start right away! It all makes perfect sense, and even my own research after I talked to her backs up everything she says.

Problem: I don't want to start eating carbs!!! She says I don't HAVE to. The diet she has given me cuts out all sugar and refined carbs anyway, so I'm halfway there, but I am also supposed to cut artificial sweeteners, coffee (gasp!), dairy products of all kinds, beef, pork, and EGGS! What will I eat?!? I'm supposed to eat whole grains and legumes on her diet, but not on Atkins. Perplexed over here!!!

I still do 20 carbs a day, I do total carbs tho. This is what my Dr wants me on. I do let myself go to 30 total carbs every now and then and not stress over it to much.

If you eat one Atkins item that alone could get you to 17 total carbs if you are counting total carbs but only be like 3 NET carbs.

If you watch the video in my link below you will see what Dr Westman that wrote the new atkins book has to say about the program and counting the carbs. I had already changed to total carbs before my Dr told me to because of the video.

This is the link to the Atkins website. even tho I dont fully do it the atkins way anymore I do still eat from the atkins food list/eat. I just count carbs different than they do.

Hi Laura,

Yes, I had to cut out the booze and I try to minimize going out to eat. I have to travel about every other week for my job so I can't completely avoid it. I pack my own food and follow plan when I eat out, but it still seems to stall out the weight loss a bit.

I know that this group, for the most part, doesn't think that counting calories is necessary, but that has not been true for me. I have to stay between 12000-1500 (unless I do over an hour of activity) to keep losing weight. If you use a program like sparkpeople or fatsecret, it does it automatically anyway.

Good luck with Induction again! You might need to stay in that phase for a while.

Yes, Theresa, that was exactly what I was going to say. As far as I know, SP can track your carbs, but that is total and not Net carbs. I agree it is important to mention the difference.

Sheltie- great job staying on track while you were gone! I know you were concerned it would be difficult, and it sounds like you did great! I have been struggling a bit... not cheating exactly, but not tracking as diligently as I should, and drinking too often. Dang summer! My boyfriend was home for the last two weeks, so we ate at restaurants WAY too often (although I always made "on program" choices the best I could) and partied with friends too much. It definitely stalled my weight loss, as I knew it would. I have checked though, and I am still in ketosis, but I know I am
A) consuming too many calories, even if my net carbs are under 20; and
B) even my carb-free vodka/soda water will be burned off my my body before it goes back to burning fat.

So I am going to go back to strict Induction tomorrow for at least another week. I really don't find it too hard to stick to. I just have to eat less of the allowed foods, and quit with the booze for now.

There is a big difference in net carbs and total carbs so when you post for the good of others you need to post them either as net or total. I f you count net carbs you can eat more than if you count the same amount in total carbs.

Hi Laura and all,

Congrats to you, Laura! I think 7.5 lbs is great!

I lost another pound this week from last (so that's a total of 6.2 for 2 wks for me, but I was already pretty low carb to begin with). I'm pretty happy with that considering I was still on steroids and out of town visiting folks. I was really good when I was visiting. I told my mother-in-law that I had already eaten a protein bar before breakfast since I go for early walks with his dad. She never gave me a hard time. I'm so happy I packed extra food. I ate nearly all of my lemon chia seed muffins made out of coconut oil and flour and ate my pumpkin seeds.

I'm going to stay in Induction since I don't think it is hard. I have always eaten 1-2 servings of seeds and nuts. I probably eat more veggies and not as much fat as I'm supposed to, but my net carbs are usually under 25.

I did check out Fatsecret before responding and think it is a lot easier to use then sparkpeople. However, I have entered a lot of foods manually here and am not crazy about having to re-enter everything. I may have to consider, however. Thanks for the tip!

When I started with the low carbs, I was stumped re: how to change my nutritional info to track my carbs. I figured out that I could edit my nutritional on the tracking page. I lowered the carbs to no more than 20.

Friday, I'll raise the carbs to 25 for the next week. Etc. Is this what you were talking about re: not able to track the carbs? I get confused in electronic venues. Books are visible.

I'm happy & it's my decision to stay on low carbs for the amount of time it takes to find out when I stop losing weight. It's a journey & I'm happy. Connie

So today is officially the end of the 14 day Induction period.... I don't really want to move on to OWL yet, but I wonder if I should? I ended up with a loss of 7.4lbs for the two weeks, once the weather cooled off and I lost the water retention I had going on. So that isn't bad at all. Of course I always want the loss to be more, but that is more than 3.5 lbs a week, so I'm not complaining.

I have been using Fatsecret to track my foods lately... I love SP, but it doesn't give me the option to track net carbs, and I want that! I know I could go in and subtract my fibre from my carbs, but that is not as easy as just having a program that does it for me. I like to see how many carbs each MEAL is, not just a running total for the day.

So I think I will keep on what I have been doing for a couple more days... by boyfriend heads up north (northern Alberta) for work on Wednesday for two weeks, and then I can focus completely on my eating for that time. I am thinking of doing a Fat Fast for three to five days, and then moving on to OWL a week from now.

How are you doing Sheltie?

Laura

Great planning for camping outing! HOT heat drives into my basement. At least the basement is cool & I can sleep. The heat seems to be unbearable in a lot of areas. I'm in WI & last summer it was horrible. This year we've had a LOT of rain but cooler evenings that help manage high temps during the day. I could have an IV drip in my arm to get more hydration. I'm on your side! Connie

I'm trying to keep my carbs around 20 too... although they have been over a couple times when I ate at restaurants. Not WAY over, but around 30. I am trying to cut back on the artificial sweeteners to see if that helps... I still need one packet for my morning coffee, but I am trying to skip the Mio in my water.

I live in Alberta, Canada. It is around 36C today (97F) which is unusual here. Average temp for this time of year is only around 25-28C (75-80F), so my body is SO not used to it! I am bloated up like a blowfish! lol. I don't have air conditioning, so I haven't slept well either, which can slow the weight loss too. Regardless, I'm not going to get discouraged. The weight will come off, it HAS to!

I am going camping with my boyfriend and his kids tomorrow for a couple days, so it will take some planning to eat well! I bought some turkey slices, spinach and cheese for roll-ups. I am going to boil up a bunch of eggs. I am going to bring some shakes and bars, but I am hoping not to rely on them too much. For dinners we have planned bacon wrapped chicken breasts for one night, which I can eat if I rinse off the sauce. And the second night they are having hot dogs, which I can't stand, so I bought Bison sausages to eat instead. 2g of carbs per sausage.

Hang in there, Laura!

What are you trying to keep your net carb intake at? I'm still around 20. I don't seem to be retaining water. I live in Florida, so it is muggy and hot. I have to eat a ton of salt in the form of broth or soy sauce so that I don't cramp up.

Hi I am new to this group,

I have been on SP for a while but have been plateaued since March so in an attempt to break the plateau I decided to go on induction. I did Atkins a few years ago and lost all the weight kept it off for a time then gradually slipped off the wagon and put the weight all back on and more. So now I have been counting calories and exercising like crazy which was slowly working... very slowly until I hit the plateau. I struggle a bit with Atkins as I love fruit and lots of veges, but.... It works. I have been in induction a week now and have lost about 2kg so I am glad with that. I hope more comes off this week as the push for me comes to save money on my health insurance.

Great loss Sheltie! And you can do the in-laws visit... Just be strong! And yes, some bars for those "in a pinch" times are a good idea.

I am envious of your loss! I have lost NOTHING! In fact, I have gained a lb! It is crazy hot where I live right now and I am retaining water like nobody's business, but I thought I would at least have a little loss! Oh well.

So week 1 and I went from 230 to 224.8. I know this is the most dramatic week for most people and shouldn't get too excited, but there are two reasons why I'm pretty happy: 1) I was a course of steroids for my asthma, and 2) I was already pretty low carb to begin with so probably not as much water loss as a LFHC person would experience. Gives me motivation for the holiday weekend coming up where I have to spend it with my in-laws. My mother-in-law is an ex-nurse who is a big fan of LFHC eating, so I will have to be crafty when I eat. I don't like the Atkin's bars, but will bring those for a pinch and some LC whey powder.

Sure, I don't mind sharing my food log at all! I have actually been logging my foods on the Atkins website for now, because it gives me suggestion of what to eat. I can email them to you if you like? I plan to go back to logging on SP soon, as it is a WAY better system.

I agree that induction has been pretty easy so far! It will be a week on Sunday, and I really haven't had any major issues other than a headache for the first few days. Yesterday I ate wings at Boston Pizza, thinking I was making a good choice, and then discovered that they must dredge them in flour or something because a meal-sized order was 24g of carbs with the salt and pepper rub! Egads! So I was over my carb limit yesterday, but the sticks are still purple today.

I think I will stay in Induction for longer than two weeks.... I'll see how I feel. If I am getting bored of the foods, better to move onto OWL than to quit.

Welcome Newbies! I've only been around a short while myself. I finished induction a couple weeks ago and am sturggling to lose the last 5 pounds. It'll come off if I have to run it off! I feel better anyway and that's important.

1. Stop wasting money- Save money

2. Exercise- do something every day

3. Get organized- mise en place

4. Write a letter by hand at least once a week.

Hi Laura,

I'd love that. Looks like we are in roughly the same spot diet-wise and weight-wise.

Do you feel comfortable sharing your nutrition log? I share mine and asked for feedback. I always get a lot out of looking at examples of what people actually do.

I actually think the Induction phase is pretty easy to stick to around 20 net carbs (if I'm not traveling), but it takes me a long time to get into ketosis according to the urine strips (which I know aren't the best way to measure because some folks use the ketones up as energy better than others, so they won't show up in their urine). I've seen it get darker purple before so I know it's possible--just takes several weeks. I'll probably stay in Induction for a while since I have over 50 lbs to lose.

Welcome Sheltiefuzz! I started Induction on Sunday (this time round), so we are right around the same place. I am also someone who likes to know the "why" of things, and do the research, so I love your obvious "info nerd"ism, like me! lol

I've been posting about my progress thus far in the "Induction" section, but it doesn't make it on to the main page (because there are three "sticky" topics) so I don't get much response (except Eliz- thanks!). I'd love to have someone to give/receive support and accountability who is at around the same place, so if you are interested...

Hi Connie,

I'm new to the group, but have read tons and tons on low carb over the past several months (to the point of going to the original literature in scientific journals). My favorite book on explaining the science behind low carb is "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. If you don't have a science background, you might want to read "Why We Get Fat" by the same author which is a bit more "hit the highlights." I also subscribe to the CarbSmart magazine and listen to Jimmy Moore's "Living La Vida Low Carb" podcast. I have more resources, but these are best to start.

I eat a similar breakfast to yours and am in Induction phase. I use 1 scoop (30g protein) of Whey Isolate (vanilla flavored) from Body Fortress: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Advanced-V
anilla-Creme-Whey-Isolate/14654077#Nut
rition+Facts. It's inexpensive and available at Walmart, Walgreens, etc. It only has 1.5 grams of carbs per scoop. Then I add 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, 12-16 oz of coffee (cooled), a few ice cubes and 1 Tb of MCT or coconut oil. The oil is used by a lot of athletes to give quick energy if they are lower in carb, plus it helps get you into ketosis faster. I drink half of the shake 30 min prior to martial arts and the other half after I'm done. The shake has about 2g of net carbs, 30g of protein, and 283 calories.

I also live in a hot/humid environment, so drink 1-2 cups of chicken broth per day or add 2 Tb of soy sauce (Kikkoman's, but not the low sodium) to my stir fry everyday. It has really cut down on the leg/toe cramping.

I think that exercise isn't an effective weight loss tool for many people, but I do it because I enjoy it. If you are teaching, it sounds like you do as well.

Good luck!

“I purchased Adi's Fit&Active (F&A) Weight Loss Shakes as well as Jillian's protein powder. I usually have a F&A, with a teaspoon of chia seeds & 1 scoop of the protein powder. I've been doing this for about 2 months. I've gained 3# since I've created this as my breakfast. This a.m. I read the labels on both products & realized there is a lot of sugar in these products. “

Absolutely read the labels!
I use a whey protein powder occasionally…but my basic liquid breakfast is an Atkins shake. The carbs in my whey protein are lots higher than the Atkins, and I like them made with coconut or almond milk, which jacks it up some more. Give the Atkins drinks a try. They’re pretty tasty. I’ve had no luck with their snack products, though. Those put me in a stall. I’d just rather have real food snacks if I need any. Be sure you’re getting enough healthy fats. That will help crush the cravings.

“I…teach an aerobic class every 3rd morning
I also teach an aerobic class every fourth evening & 2 deep water running classes on weekends. “

Go easy on the exercise, if you can. The idea is more activity, not necessarily exercise. You may be defeating your purpose somewhat in your exercise schedule.

“I purchased the Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution & am attempting to adjust my thinking. This is going to take more education than I expected. “

That’s a good place to start. You need to understand the basics to make the right choices. Follow up on the good recent research, and see some of the low-carb and primal/paleo web- and blogsites out there. You’ll get great firsthand info in those places too. But delve into Atkins’ book so you have a clearer understanding of what it’s about.

“Help! I'm open to advice & experience. “

You’ve come to the right place! You’ll find both here.

Maybe the weight gain is due to the added protein. It might be some muscle gain. Definitely take your measurements. Sometimes this is the only thing that keeps me going in the right direction. I notice inch loss more than weight loss.

If you don't want to throw it away, I would only eat the sugary powder on the mornings you will work it off immediately. And definitely read your labels before you purchase.

Atkins is mostly real food. Shakes and bars are convenient, and better than many of the alternatives, but if you can eat real food, you might do better. A lot of people find the processed stuff can stall them.

I'm new to Low Carbs. I've been reading about Atkins & thought today I would adapt the Phase 1 into my food plan. I purchased Adi's Fit&Active (F&A) Weight Loss Shakes as well as Jillian's protein powder. I usually have a F&A, with a teaspoon of chia seeds & 1 scoop of the protein powder. I've been doing this for about 2 months. I've gained 3# since I've created this as my breakfast.

This a.m. I read the labels on both products & realized there is a lot of sugar in these products.

I'm not sure what to do at this time. This breakfast has given me the strength to teach an aerobic class every 3rd morning, Since I've gained weight I thought if I adapt low carbs throughout the day it might be better for the functions of my body.

I also teach an aerobic class every fourth evening & 2 deep water running classes on weekends.

Should I find a different protein powder source without so much sugar? I'm struggling & am getting more confused. I purchased the Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution & am attempting to adjust my thinking. This is going to take more education than I expected.

I weight 178#; am 5'5"; and 64 yrs of age. I'm relatively active but do NOT function well in the high humidity & temperatures.
Help! I'm open to advice & experience. Thank you. Connie

Thanks for the reply, Brigit:

That's a lot of dogs!

I did that experiment where I cut out grains, beans, nuts, dairy and gluten for 30 days. Added dairy inn over days 31-60 and was OK, when I added beans, grains and gluten back in, that's when I got intestinal problems. So I seem to tolerate dairy OK, but don't eat too much of it.

I feel pretty satisfied with this diet and exercise quite a bit (I don't track it at sparkpeople--just use the nutrition log). That's why my calories tend to be so low--I'm too full. I will experiment with adding more fat and subtracting protein if I hit a stall. I know that's a trick folks use. I'm not a big fan of fatty meats, other than salmon and bacon.

So far, really liking this discussion group!

Sheltiefuzz, love your name, LOL, we have 7 short-haired dogs and one German Spitz with Sheltie-type hair, I know what you mean with fuzz. emoticon
I think your diet looks good, you could possibly even increase fat a bit and maybe lower protein a bit (unless you exercise a ton) and feel more satisfied.

Concerning the veggies, I suspect that there may be different needs depending on where you live (warm or cold climates).
Concerning dairy, I have found a huge difference for me between A1 and A2 dairy and have blogged about it in the past. A1, the more common type, causes congestion for many people and other symptoms like bloating, A2 (goat and sheep dairy and some cow dairy) is often tolerated without problems. It is the protein (casein) that causes the problem, so ghee (clarified butter) may still be well tolerated.

You're welcome, JLKL:

I'm not convinced that we really NEED veggies. If you've read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes, he makes some interesting points about fiber--in short, it may be overrated. Other info that I've read say that you don't need to focus on veggies if you eat grass-fed beef and free range chickens/eggs, etc because you get the nutrients through the meat and fat. Since I don't eat the entire animal (i.e. organ meats, connective tissue, etc), I'm not sure that I'm really getting all of the nutrients anyway. So, I still keep veggies in my diet to be on the safe side. More importantly, I like them and they make me feel full longer. Gives something for the coconut oil to stick to and add flavor. I always have to pair with protein and fat or else I'm in an hour!

I'm going to stay with this plan for a while. If I stall, I'm definitely going to try a fat fast.

Sheltie - I can see that I am way not eating enough green, leafy veggies. I better get my Nutribullet out and pulverize them and just drink them. ha ha

And I truly don't take advantage of the different kinds of seeds available.

Thanks for the info.

Joy

Nuts and dairy are very individual. Many people cannot control their portions with nuts. I am one of thos people. I cannot have a few. I eat nuts until they are gone.
Dairy stalls a lot of people. I can handle dairy in moderate quantities. If I eat too much I get congested.
If you eat high fat meats, you do not need to worry about fiber.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

I thought that the MySparkPage magically appeared when I posted a message. I think I fixed it. Again, new to this. Let me know if it still isn't working.

As for fiber, I just eat most of my carbs from veggies and add the sunflower seeds in the shell (because it takes over an hour for me to eat a serving and provides more salt to help with muscle cramping) or pumpkin seeds. I eat about 6 cups of leafy greens (bok choy, romaine or spinach) with 2 cups of other lower carb veggies usually stir fried in coconut oil. I also eat shirataki noodles with some broth for more fiber and sodium. I'm not up to 25g, which is the recommended daily allowance for women, but I think that this recommendation is based on nothing substantial.

Welcome! You will enjoy being a part of this group.

Sounds like you have everything under control.

I am having a little trouble getting enough fiber in. Sounds like you are doing just fine in that department. What are you eating to get your fiber in?

Can't see your trackers.

I'm with you on the nuts, never could see why they couldn't be eaten on induction.

Hi all,

I've been tracking in sparkpeople on and off for years, but this is the first time I've joined a group. I've eaten relatively low carb, but seem to go off the wagon when I travel.

I started the Atkin's Induction phase on Saturday and have been doing great. I stay around 20g of net carbs (with 15-20g of fiber) and usually have 50-65% of my calories coming from fat (coconut oil, MCT oil, grass-fed butter, etc). Calories are 1200-1500 (since it tracks it anyway). Would love it if someone who considers themselves a low carb expert (are Jimmy Moore or Dr. Attia out there?) would look at my diet that I've logged since Saturday and provide feedback. The only rule I'm breaking is including 1 serving of nuts (because I've never been able to find a good explanation of why you can't have nuts during Induction and still keep net carbs around 20). I'm 5'9, 227 lb female who is about to turn 39. Would like to get to 165lbs before I'm 40!

Thanks,
sheltiefuzz
