I am one of the team leaders on the SB team here on Sparks. Basically on phase 1, if you are getting in the 4.5 cups of veggies, 3 snacks/3 meals, using the healthy fat recommendations, getting in the suggested 2 cups of dairy, you should average in the 1200 range. This will vary dependent upon your food choices of course. You don't have to worry about being under 1200 or hitting 1200 every day since it takes more than a couple days consecutively to mess with your metabolism. Good luck!

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie

I have not done south beach, but I always ate until full. The first few weeks of Atkins, I ate very little. Then I started eating more. Eating when not hungry is how we all got too fat!

Look forward to your comments about South Beach!...SB seems easy to follow...funny, it's only one day, and I already feel more " in control"...I guess because I've committed to a plan!...thanks again for your comment

Thanks for your reply...I never was hungry, just afraid that by having fewer calories I was setting myself up for failure ...I have always heard you need to eat (the right way) to lose weight...

I'm not too familiar with South Beach as I'm on a low-carb high-fat diet, while South Beach is low-carb high-protein. I suspect that increasing fat would be the only good options to increase calories without affecting metabolism negatively. One important issue is whether you felt full or felt hungry and tempted to snack. If you did not feel hungry you are probably ok in the short run. If you were hungry you could increase your portion size a little or add snacks in between meals.
Hopefully you get more input.
Cheers,
Birgit
