There is both liquid stevia and sucralose (Splenda™). We're only allowed the sucralose, per our endocrinologist...and stevia leaves a slightly bitter taste with me, which the sucralose doesn't. Either way, you don't have to totally give up "sweet."

That being said, also consider that for some people, just that flavor will be translated to "sugar" in your brain, and the expected insulin response may still occur. Try either of the above alternatives and check your BG afterwards to see if you're able to handle them (metabolically).

Good luck!

You gotta try the stevia liquid, no carbs because there's no filler. I found it @ Wal-Mart

SUZAN: Wow! I know that when I eat a bit of sugar, I end up wanting to eat more and more and more. Do you use a substitute sweetener?

I know I am addicted to sugar. That is why I never cheat. It would be like an alcoholic having one small drink, it is never enough.

EXO: Thanks for the tip. Gotta check it out. I just subtract the fiber from the carb amount. Not a VERY easy thing to do, tho w/ SP.

There IS a way to track net carbs! Just set it up in your Tracker. I've got mine listed that way, so I get the total in addition to the net. It's a great option.

A carb is a carb is a carb, it's all the same to your liver. I wish there was a net carb tracker on the site.

Hi and welcome!

Exotec has a great point about so-called "complex" carbs. So-called "complex carbohydrates" SOUND like something that takes your body longer to process than simple carbs, which would be a good thing, but that simply is not so. In fact, you begin to break starch down into simple glucose with your first taste. Amylase, the enzyme in saliva breaks the chains and that potato starch turns into glucose, readily transportable to your bloodstream IN YOUR MOUTH. Don't believe me? Put a piece of cracker in your mouth for a whole minute. Before the minute is up it will begin to taste sweet.

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

We're glad you found us!

Congrats on your educational plans. Keep in mind: the present "standard of excellence" in nutrition is still largely based upon erroneous research. Most of it isn't too detrimental...but some isn't as reliable as they'd have you believe. Look around you and see if our recommendations for the last 50 or so years has produced any healthy specimens! Do some independent research via the low/restricted-carb sites. There's good info there, much of it from respected medical practitioners (some of whom have recently exited active practice and are now coming forward to set the record straight).

Sugar addiction (and thus, insulin resistance) is a major problem for a lot of us. Most of us, I might venture. Unfortunately, they don't always take that final step to tell people that carbs are just complex sugars. Alas.

You'll find good info, experience, and support here! If you haven't made acquaintance with your Nutrition Tracker yet - DO! It's an awesome resource. The best tool SP has, IMO. That, along with these forums.
So happy to "see" new faces

Hi-
I just started this yesterday, I've been toying with low carb since January, but I need something more to keep me on track. I've also started walking 2mi. day. I've done this type of diet before when I was a teenager. I'm learning a lot about nutrition as I'm going through nursing school, and I've come to the conclusion that I've been addicted to sugar most of my life, unfortunately to my detriment. I'm hoping this will help keep me motivated.
