I was just thinking about posting something about hormonal imbalances..so I will go do that.

This is the link to the Atkins website. even tho I dont fully do it the atkins way anymore I do still eat from the atkins food list/eat. I just count carbs different than they do.

As a diabetic with moderately severe type 2 diabetes diagnosis coming in (never was pre diabetic)--diagnosed 4-1/2 months ago, and from what I know, your hormonal problems probably did not include: gestational diabetes ... because I think there you don't lose weight with more carbs and NO exercise.

I've only been low carbing on a variant of South Beach for 4 months.

Doctor and all concerned are very pleased, and a little surprised.

Yeah I'm still here. I started low carb in feb, followed the program meticulously, and only lost 5 pounds. I wound up getting pregnant, and when I started eating more carbs and exercising less, I dropped 8 pounds in 2 months. I'm still eating the same amount I was eating before- no morning sickness. I've NEVER lost a pound a week before- unless I was starving myself.

It must be some hormonal imbalance that's being temporarily corrected by pregnancy.

Wander, I started in with low carb after reading up on ketogenic diets. My super-fit boss and her super-fit husband dove in first; they ate super healthy, but his blood pressure and cholesterol were always unacceptable. Making the change to this way of eating immediately improved his BP. They're enjoying the benefits of keto for running endurance.

"New Atkins for a New You" and "The Art and Science of Low Carb Living" (by two of the 3 authors of the Atkins book) made good companions for me. Atkins boils it down to a simple "do this" and the Art & Science book provides more technical background. They cover lots of information on how our bodies can be sensitive (in a bad way) to carbs and not sensitive (in a good way) to insulin.

For me the power of choosing to shift to ketosis is that a nosh of crap carbs are no longer a small permissible deviation. At every turn, I'm looking to go with less-processed foods, and face any munchies or cravings with cheese and pickles! That is so much better than plain, unflavored willpower! I found that all my munchie desires now are just habitual, there is no faux "hunger" signal from my stomach responding to drops in blood sugar.

When you start in and limit your carbs, be sure to read up on induction and all the tips for avoiding feeling like crap. There are some recommended supplements, you'll need lots of salt. I followed all the advice I could find, including getting daily cardio (more gentle than usual if needed) and 80% of my calories from fat. I only had one "off" day and was definitely adapted in 2 weeks.

I am a modified Beacher, I've got diabetes with low blood pressure and barely managed high blood cholesterol ... (doctor thinks I may have to again be back on a higher dose of statin drugs I'd said sayonara to, 10 years previously) ...

Somehow, this time my HgA1C went down from 8.3 (not good) to 6.5 (normal limits) in a mere 4 months, despite a tight schedule wherein I don't get enough exercise. I can't afford a gym, btw--at least with low-carbing, gym membership is neither necessary nor required!

I am on Metformin twice a day (this is a diabetes drug), but I'd ignored all those weird symptoms coming in, and just thought they were a part of being my age ... umm, I was too busy to care ...

I'd lost so much weight, to WELL under my goal weight; felt uncomfortable about it (and weak--I'm a very hard-gainer when it comes to upper-body strength) ... but I am learning to live with this new weight. Cannot bring myself to declare a "new goal weight".

Incidentally, reaching my goal SIZE (however, I'd wanted it at a much higher weight - i.e., much more muscular body composition) ... but the belly pooch--an integral part of my identity, as in I've had it for 54 of my living years on this Earth--is gone ... core strength is a bit better ...

And I'd had to ditch most of the vinyasa yoga I've been practicing. I obviously, have to do intense lengthy cardio sessions, though I do not get to exercise every single day--don't know how much of the working-in type extra walking I could count as exercise at this point. And the fatigue sometimes setting in. Those being the only drawbacks to a flexitarian diabetes-managing low-carb plan, that *I* can see.

Oh, but a concern: I have had days here and there where I woke up smelling like nail-polish remover (and I don't ever do my nails--they are still brittle due to my blood sugar problems) and had that metallic breath ...

I started day one! I was going to wait a while, until I could go grocery shopping and until I cleared out some of the stuff in my 'fridge, but when I got on the scale this morning- it told me I gained 2.5 lbs since I started tracking food and exercise January 1st. I decided, there's no better time than the present.

I suppose I'm going to do Atkins for 2 weeks. I don't know if I'll change things up after that- I've explored some of the links you guys provided below. Feel free to offer more suggestions. I appreciate the support and guidance.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I do workout in pool 2 x week for 1 hr. Sometimes I run/walk and sometimes I slow swim, use pool resistant weights. I workout on floor with stations for legs but not hard lifting. I do not do much walking on floor but when having a good day will walk fast 3 to 5 x round track (indoor) and pause at stations to work out.

I get hungry after so I usually carry a kefir smoothy of some type.

I have never done any intense workouts, just my PT exercises and some walking. Still lost all of that weight just doing the low carb, high fat, moderate protein. On this plan and if you read Gary Taubes book you will see that intense exercise doesn't always benefit the weight loss program because if you do that your body will want/need more and more to keep losing. You lose on this program not from the exercise and calories in vs calories out but through the metabolism with the fat burning etc. Gary Taubes book really does tell it all! Cannot recommend it highly enought! Most people have more energy on this eating plan. It is not about the carbs giving the energy. If I have my info correct the carbs and energy from them is being replaced by fat.

Do any of you do any intense workouts? I am wondering if you run out of steam going that low on the carbs and doing say HiiT workouts?

I love Gary taubes!
I eat zero carb. So lots of high fat meat. I think the Atkins induction is a great way to start . Two weeks of meat and lc vegetables. No more than 20 carbs a day.

And just to explain for anyone who is new to low-carb eating. Atkins is one kind of eating ketogenic (very low-carb to where your body learns to burn fat in the form of ketones). emoticon

Definately read Gary Taubes book. It helped me so much, especially getting out of the shame of being fat. Low Carb does work if you work it the way it is meant to be done. High fat, low carbs and moderate protein. I have lost almost 80 poundsin about 16 months. I was desperate when I started low carb. If it doesn't work it is probably because you are probably worry about too much fat or calories or exercise and not keeping satisfied, i.e getting hungry then going off and eating things you shouldn't. Read the threads in this team and you will find out all of this and that many of us are succeeding!

You can too!

with low carb I began to lose the weight then stopped. I then learned about a different low carb aproach called nutritional ketogenic eating. It is high healthy fat (real butter, real meat fat, real bacon, real coconut oil) moderate protein(6-10 oz a day), and very low carb(goal is 20 carbs). This has been the steady working eating I've been on since May 2012. 40 lbs might not seem Woot to others but I assure you I monitored everything and this is the only one that works for me.

It is still slow (thik 5 lbs every 2-3 months) but I do not get hungry, eat healthy whole food, (not whole grains) and feel like I've got a plan.

Good luck in finding the answer for you. Also, I don't think you failed at anything. They all taught you what does not work so each step is a learned experience.

type with you later. Junebug

Welcome,
I think the Gary Taubes book is a must read and will answer most of your questions.
By far the best book on the market about low-carb in my opinion is this one:
www.amazon.com/Art-Science-Low-Carbo
hy
drate-Living/dp/0983490708

It is the most similar to Atkins but with much updated scientific info.
If you have any concerns about eating lots of fats add this one:
www.amazon.com/The-Great-Cholesterol
-M
yth-Disease/dp/1592335217

You'll find more resources as you go through threads on this team and you might also want to join the paleo team.
My own experience speaks distinctly against carb cycling and also against a high-protein diet (South Beach) but I would recommend to consider paleo, Atkins or Rosedale.
Paleo works great if you have sensitivities to some foods that someone on Atkins might still eat like dairy. Rosedale considers the problem of leptin along with the problem of insulin.

Oh gosh! Sounds like my story. I am pretty sure I am insulin resistant although all my mediacl tests say I'm just fine.

I've been doing low carb (which only works for a few days then also fails in the end). I have found that carb cycling is working slowly for me along with a paleo diet. Higher carb days are still fairly low carb when compared to SAD diet.

I wish you al the best!

Hi team:

I've been struggling with weight my whole life. In the last 5 years, I've handled things more aggressively. I've tried packaged weight loss plans (Weight Watchers, Seattle Sutton, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Sparkpeople), Medical Professionals (Endocrinologists, Gynecologists, Dietitians), Exercise (Personal Trainers, Insanity, currently testing the waters with "TapOut XT")- seriously- name it, I've probably tried it without ANY success.

There were two times in my life I've successfully lost weight. Once, in college, I starved myself. And once before my wedding this past summer, I did the hCG diet. What did these two methods, albeit, unhealthy, have in common? Not just low calorie, but LOW CARB!

In the last few months of 2012, I gained 60 pounds. I'm 5'2 and a half on a good day, so this was an enormous amount to gain so quickly for me. (I'm guessing this was because I'm so carb-sensitive, and after the hCG diet, I didn't slowly introduce carbs back into my diet).

My husband is in medical school, and he spoke to one of his professors about me (a physician) who suggested I read "Why We Get Fat and What We Can Do About It". He also suggested I make an appointment with a colleague of his who specializes in female weight management. I'm scheduled to see that doctor, as well as another, in two weeks.

I haven't officially started going low-carb. Once this week's groceries are gone, I'll go shopping with a low-carb friendly list.

Long introduction- sorry. I'll be perusing this group's page to determine which method I'd like to begin with (Atkins, Southbeach, Paleo, others). Any suggestions? I'm open minded.

Best,
Wander
