This is my 3rd time joining this team. Hopefully it'll stick this time.
I'm at a point where I feel quiet desperation to get this weight off. I'm currently staying off the scales but I know I need to lose a good 100 lbs to be truly healthy again. I have no family support so am counting on sparkpeople to keep me going strong.

emoticon Thought I'd better introduce myself, for those that don't know me.
I'm Vicki and I live in Florida.
I'm working towards making the healthiest choices I can when it comes to taking care of myself.
I want to make exercise a top priority as I have a couple of health issues that exercise would improve. Also it would definately give me more energy.
I am basically trying to keep all my nutritional numbers within a set goal I think will work for me. It's not strictly any one specific program. If I had to push it, I'd be more inclined to say it's a lower carb plan.
I'm working to lose about 100 lbs but have no set time to lose it in. I'd love to lose it over the next couple of years, but I tend to be a very slow loser. So I'll take it one pound at a time.

Welcome, Mary. This group has been quiet lately ... but Marilyn and I are hoping to get it more active again. Join us and we'll be here to support you.

We all have our ups and downs -- but hopefully, we can "get down" and stay there together.

Mary, welcome to the team! We have a 'chat room' - please feel free to come join us there. As Llou mentioned in the post below, we have not been very active lately - I'm going to try to change that - maybe you can help?

I am Marilyn and I know just what you mean about being able to LOSE the weight but having a harder time keeping it off. I am at my goal weight of 145 now (well, actually fluctuating right around it) so that's the stage I'm in - the keeping it off. I am 64 years old, live in Georgia, and am retired. I'll look forward to seeing you in the chat room!!

Hello Team, I'm Mary and I'm glad to have found this team. I am 56 and have been married for 27 years. I have a daughter in NYC and a son in Houston, TX (as of last week) so I felt compelled to leave the "Almost Empty Nesters" team and find a new one!

I have about 30 pounds to release to the universe...yes, that's my new motto because I an tired of "losing" weight and then "finding" it again. I usually don't have a problem releasing my pounds, but I have difficulty keeping myself at a new found weight! I have learned something new....have a goal of being the new weight for next winter, and then next summer. I usually have a goal in mind and then once I reach it, I have no plan for how to maintain it:)

Hi, Vicki.

I was on vacation last week and just now spotted your post here. Our group has been very quiet lately -- way too quiet -- and I welcome your participation. Maybe if we can get a few new members like you, others will join in and we can become a lively group again.

I am 56 years old and have about 50 pounds to lose. I fantasize about losing 75 pounds, but would be satisfied with 30.

Hi, I'm Vicki. I'm 55, and have 55 lbs to lose and I'm working towards losing it by my birthday next year so that gives me 20 months. I just found out yesterday I have RA so I'm making big changes over the next few months in how and what I eat, and the amount of exercise I get. I will not let RA get me down. I also have a lot of inflammation in my back and along my joints and sometimes it's all I can do to stand up straight, much less walk. But I will win this battle.
Looking to make a lot of new friends here.

Hi, my name is Audrey. I joined this site a couple of times, just haven't been able to keep myself motivated beyond the first day or two.
I lost 60 lbs about 5 or 6 years ago and loved the way I felt and looked, although, I was still considered overweight. After which time I fell into a deep depression that I had a hard time shaking. Not only had food become my comfort, but I closed myself off from the outside world and became a shut-in, basically. I got help for my depression and, although I'm not completely "cured" ... is anyone ever truly cured of depression? I'm feeling so much better these days and am looking forward to living out future goals. In order to do so, I need to become a much healthier me.
So, here I am ... a single mother and grandmother ... heavier than I've ever been ... unable to participate in physical activities like I should or like I used to. With desires to be able to ride my bike for miles on end, swim, play tennis and not feel embarrassed at the beach, where I'm planning to live. I want to live ... I want to live long enough to see my dreams come true. I want to live to see my grandsons grow up. I want my kids and my grandsons to be proud to be seen with me
I was never one before to sit on the porch watching that world go by ... I want to be the one, once again, who enjoys participating in the activities that the world has to offer.

My name is Jayne,
I joined this site many years ago but never was able to get it figured out.
Hopefully I can do so now as I think an exercise buddy or team would be
exactly what I need.

I have grandchildren. Unfortunately none live very close.
Until a few years ago I was very active with badminton, yoga, biking, tai chi
hiking, etc.
Have been having a tough time getting motivated.
Hope to hear from someone.

Hi !

My name is Carole and I just joined the team.
I am married with 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren. I have been exercising for a long time, but I don't do as much aerobics as I us to. I do Yoga, Pilates and toning classes.

I think a goal of doing just 10 minutes a day of movement would bo good.
I hope the others do to.

Hi everyone,
I joined the team about a week or so ago, so thought I should stop by and introduce myself. I'm Debbie and I live in southern California. Hubby and I have been married for 36 years.
We have a 29 year old son with developmental disabilities who lives at home with us, and a 25 year old daughter who moved out last year. We also have a "mini-zoo" of cats and dogs.
I've been going to physical therapy for the past month for a shoulder injury, but am looking forward to getting to know everyone and to getting fit!

Ladies--I hope you have room for a new team member! I live in NJ (where we are getting rain on top of all the snow we have gotten before) and I started using Sparkpeople when my daughter got "hooked". She got married in Nov and wanted to lose some weight so reminded me that I had registered way back when. I got serious in July because I had a dress to wear to the wedding--but it was a little tight.

By November, the dress fit perfectly, I was down about 15 pounds from my high and I decided that I want to hit a healthier weight for me so I have "mini goals" set--the current one is 155. Eventually I want to get to 145.

I go to the gym 4 days a week at best--doing walking on the treadmill and then taking the free personal training class which is all strength training. I also do some videos or Spark workouts and try to get out for a "power walk"--twice around the block is a mile. I hope eventually to run around the block but I'm not there yet.

I have 3 girls--one married in CA, one in college in NJ and one still in HS but she graduates in June and will go to school in MI. I grew up in WI and still have lots of family there. And my MIL lives in TX--my FIL died in July--part of my push to exercise. I want to get my husband in shape--his shape is like his dad's and his heart health is worrisome.

anyway--I just found that there is an "introduction" space so moved my comments from the other thread to here. (I was an engineer by training so don't always read directions! LOL)

Time to introduce myself to all of you. I so much enjoyed reading everyone's posts about themselves!

I am Betty. I live in SW Missouri on a farm. I always insisted I would never live on a farm because that would be too far from the library. God must have laughed His head off at that:) Now I would cry if I had to move back to town.

My love and I have been married for 29 and 1/2 years. We have 3 sons, 28 (he was born on our 11 month anniversary), 25 and 19. We tend to be Oh SO Proud of our guys!

Weight has always been a problem for me. However, after several months of telling myself I was going to get busy and do something about my obesity (I've learned to call it what it is) one day I was looking for something on the internet and happened across Spark People. I am so grateful for this group because besides helping me with weight loss (slowly, but it is going down), it the people have also been so encouraging and I feel they help my self-confidence.

I do have a friend that I walk with about 3 times a week, but the last three weeks have been rough. First I was sick, then she was sick, then both of us got so busy in our lives it became really easy to say "Maybe tomorrow". Monday we decided that tomorrow is here and we are going to get back in the groove!

I look forward to visiting with all of you. Have a great rest tonight and day tomorrow.

"He hath showed thee, O Man, what is good. And what doth the Lord require of thee - but to DO JUSTLY, and to LOVE MERCY, and to WALK HUMBLY with thy God." Micah 6:8

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. What I do with it is what counts!

Helloooo! I'm glad to see many potential friends on this group! I'm 50 and live in rural VT in a cranky old farmhouse where I raised 2 daughters and a 9-year-younger DH. Hmmm, that sounded like my DH is younger than my girls, not so! Girls are 25 and 21, living in next town. One's still in college the other is a social worker. I've replaced the kids with 2 big doggies, both rescue dobermans, Topper and Moxie.

I've just been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and the only thing I can figure to do is lose weight to feel better. I've had success with Weight Watchers before so I know I can journal my way to success if I only can get support from like-minded women. That's where you come in, I hope.

I'm connected via smartphone and at my desk at work. I'm Dir of Annual Giving for a small private college. Lots of stress, as you might imagine in the fundraising world. Also, I just lost my Dad this past summer and have had a really hard time getting back to routines. Actually before his "death-stroke" 10/09 I had just lost 25 lbs. Then all went, well, went to FAT!! 10 months of nursing home visits. Ugh.

More later, I'm sure. Glad to be here with you all!

Hi Everyone:

...and thank you Marilyn for starting this team... I was really looking for a team to chat w/ and I think I found my home.

I'm Susan and I live in northern Maryland. I am originally from CT, but have lived in NY (both Long Island and upstate, Indiana and Georgia. I have been divorced for about 10 years.

I have a daughter who is married and lives in Florida - along w/ the absolute light of my life - my grandson, Jack.

I work in the field of human resources - most days are pretty good, but as you can imagine, in this economy, it can also get pretty stressful (= food intake).

I love to be outside - hiking, kayaking, gardening, etc. so summers are always easier on the weight issues. Winters (like right now) I find myself pretty prone on the couch!

I never had a weight problem until menopause hit... I started gaining weight, started to become less active, gained more weight, etc. etc. but I don't have a big frame - so I just look 'lumpy' :)

I have taken about 20# off, have another 10 to go... I would like to say they are a stubborn 10, but I'm just not as committed as I should be... I think this team will help me be more accountable.

So that's about it for me - time to get up and exercise so I can enter that later :)

Have a great day everyone1

Hello I am CindyH. I will be 52 on Jan. 18. My DH and I got married about 10 years ago, adopted two special needs kids, sold our respective houses and moved to rural OK. We built our house with our own hands, actually we are still working on it. We are trying to live simply and hope to be 75% off the grid by the time DH retires.

I raise dairy goats and chickens and I have been a health educator for 35 years. Now, I work for myself teaching yoga and doing personal training primarily for seniors.

I see a lot of chronic pain and loss of motion that Western medicine can't address. I have a great acupuncturist who has given me a lot of relief for my own ailments with acupuncture. So now I am studying acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

As I entered perimenopause I kept getting sicker and sicker. I could not get a diagnosis that explained all my symptoms. Life became a chore. Then I read an article on Celiac's Disease. I quit eating gluten and voila! I got my life back.

Unfortunately, I had gained a lot of weight while I dragged myself to work and came home and collapsed on the couch all those months (years?). Now I am back on track. I discovered SP while researching an exercise routine for a client.

I am happy to be here! Thanks for creating the team Marilyn.

Hi everyone! I am glad to be part of this challenge and have a group of people to "talk" to. My name is Lizzy. I am 49, have 4 kids and 2 jobs.

I lost 50 lbs with WW a few years ago, but between health issues and stress I have re-gained some of it. I am tired of feeling this way, so I am ready to re-commit.

Looking forward to getting to know you all. Happy New Year.

I live in Canada . Today, 70cm of snow is melting like crazy and it is raining! I hope my sump pump works. Tomorrow it is to be -12 so all this will freeze into quite the mess. Still, I do love the winter and used to be so strong I could carry my 4 year old on my back while I skied! Not so anymore.
While I would not be putting kids on my back ( she is 21 now and would feel silly) - I would like my strength back. I would also like to get rid of my very large and unwieldy stomach that has grown from too much good food and good wine.

I am very happily married and we have 4 children ages 17, 21, 33 and 37. NO grandkids ( rats). I also have a spoiled dog that likes to romp.

Last year I was running 5km three times per week and was down twenty pounds. Then - bam- all life got a bit messy and everything fell to pieces. Sometimes I think I self sabotage my weight loss - or simply trick myself into thinking I don't really have to count calories anymore or can miss a day at the gym.
Nope, I can't. Like any other mortal -if I eat too much and exercise too little - I gain weight - period.
Looking forward to being part of this journey with everyone,

cheers,
liz

Since I find it nice to know a little more about the members than "I have __ pounds to lose" I will tell you a little about me.

I'm 73 years old and live with my daughter in a beautiful rural setting about 15 miles west of Portland OR. I'm originally from Colorado but married a military man so I had the opportunity to live many places and finally settled down here in Or. I had two daughters but lost my youngest last year. I'm no longer married and neither is my daughter so this more or less a hen house.

I've always gained weight easily but since I liked to be active, with a little care I could keep it under control most of the time. However, things changed about 20 years ago things changed. I fell on ice and broke both my legs, ended up in a wheel chair for 3 months, a walker for 2 more and a walking boot for another 6 weeks only to find one leg didn't heal correctly and I had to have it reset. Needless to say I put on quite a few pounds which I never seemed to be able to get rid of. Mostly because it took me forever to get my legs back in shape.

Fast forward about 10 years and I developed thyroid cancer. One year of treatment and 2 years to stabilize my medicine and 50 pounds added. It was then my daughter (a RN) insisted I move in with her because the cancer mastacized to my lungs. Much to everyone's surprise I'm still around and the cancer is in remission. Five years later I had slowed down and finally reached a point where I could hardly walk to the kitchen because of back pain. Back to the doctor. I was diagnosed with degenative back disease aggravated by being over weight and one leg being 5/8 of inch shorter than the other (a result of my broken legs). I also had pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and COPD. That is when I decided to take back control of my life. I joined SP and started exercising (moving) and watching what I ate and here I am 3 years later, diabetes under control, no high blood pressure or cholesterol and minimal back pain. I can get out and garden, play with my great-grandkids, walk 2 or 3 miles and enjoy life.

That's where I'm at today. Thoroughly enjoying my family, my location and my life in general. So all of you who are struggling let me tell the reward is far greater than you can imagine. As someone said "Where there is life, let there be life."

Hope is here-Perfection isn't

God Bless

Hi everyone, I am Vee, I live in South Dakota. I have been divorced since my son was 6 months old. I never married again. My son is living and working in Iowa and is married. I only had the one child.

I was very tall and skinny as a kid growing up till I got married and started gaining weight after being pregnant and I was frustrated with a bad husband and ate more and more. I lost all the weight during my divorce but over time just gave up and ate. I am an emotional eater.

I got a warning from my doctor not long ago and she said lose weight or die, I have so many health issues due to my weight that I am struggling and also I took her words to heart.

I am struggling with edema and high bp now, they can't get the high bp and edema under control other than to give me water pills, which drys me out so bad I itch I guess thats what its from.

I have an injured left foot at this time so am limited to what exercise I can do, but I'm doing upper body weights and if I"m laying on the bed I can do leg lifts and I use hand held weights at home when I can't get to the gym, so at least I am moving.

I want and need to lose at least 90 pounds but I am going to try for 100. I started over on my ticker a few days ago so it shows me higher than ever, but in the last week I lost 7 pounds, but I am wondering if its water weight, but it shows a loss in inches too, so I dont' know.

Thats it for me, I enjoy reading about everyone, its good to know you all, have a good day!

I guess it is my turn. I am Teresa and I'm 51 years old. I have been happily married for 30 years to my best friend and we have two children. The oldest is 24 and lives in Japan and the youngest is 13. We live in southeastern North Carolina about 45 minutes east of Wilmington.

Growing up, I was always tall and never worried about my weight. Once I hit middle age, I started putting weight on. A couple of years ago, I lost the extra weight and was living a healthy lifestyle when I started a moved and started a new job. I put it all back on, but I am ready to return to the healthy life. I felt so much better and had more energy. I enjoyed exercising and felt better all day when I did.

Just reading the previous posts, you are all such an inspiration and so motivating. I look forward to being on the team.

OK, I'm going to try this again. I told Marilyn I wrote a long intro for myself last night, hit something I shouldn't have, and lost the whole thing! Arrrgh!

My name is Carol and I live in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. DH and I decided to fulfill a dream when we retired from 35 years (each) of teaching in Florida and move here.

My first two years here were hectic as we bought a house, gutted it, and remodeled it to suit our lifestyle. In addition, both my parents back in Florida were fighting life-ending illnesses- mom with kidney failure and dad with dementia. They passed away 5 months apart last year.

In the midst of running back to Florida every few weeks to handle their crises, I noticed a large mole, which I'd always had on my face, growing larger and changing color. It was diagnosed 3 years ago as stage 2 melanoma. While they were doing tests for the melanoma, the doctors discovered I had parotid cancer (that's the gland where you get mumps). (I tell people I was always an over-achiever!) I came through the surgery fine, although I lost 50 lymph nodes and suffered some nerve damage to my neck, shoulder and arm. I've always been a believer in alternative medicines, so when the doctors finished with me, I went for acupuncture and massage to heal the nerve damage. Most of that has been corrected now and we're still seeing results every treatment.

While going through all this stress, you know what happened- I kept consoling myself with food and kept putting on more and more weight. I've struggled with my weight my whole life- came into this world weighing almost 10 pounds! Then in May 2009 I was watching Good Morning America when they did a feature on 3 women who'd lost over 150 pounds each with 3 different methods. I was intrigued by Birdie who said her program was called Spark People, was on the internet, and was free. That last word got my attention and I immediately began searching the internet for the site. When I found it, I knew what I needed to do! Just at that moment, my DD called and asked me if I'd seen Birdie- one of her high school friends!!!!- on GMA. I took that as a sign from above that this was the path I should take. I immediately started incorporating the Spark message into my life. I'd eaten pretty healthy over the years- just too much of it. Exercise was never my "thing", so that's where I decided to put my main focus. After I survived my cancer ordeal, DH had bought me a great treadmill. I started using that and bought myself some resistance bands, weights, and a stability ball over the next few months. In September of that year I went to the Spark convention in Cincinnati and knew I would never go back to my "old" lifestyle.

I've lost 35 pounds and the govt. BMI says I'm still 10 pounds overweight. But my doctor is thrilled with my progress, my medical tests are so much better (BP especially). So he told me to quit worrying about what the scale says and just keep on working to "up" my progress as I can. (He was so impressed in the change he saw in me- he joined Spark People!)

Working out 60-120 minutes a day has become a normal part of my life. When I moved here, I could barely hike the trails, which was what I moved here for in the first place. The road outside my house takes a turn and goes up at a 15% incline (DH tested it!) to the top of the mountain. Last spring I decided to go with DH and our darling little dog (Harley) on their morning walks. At first it was a struggle, but now I can do the 2 1/2 miles up and back down easily. When the weather warms up, my next goal is to do a 5k race. I may only walk it as my joints don't like my running much, but it's the last thing on my bucket list. I really do have it all- I love where I live and how I live. I am totally content.

-Carol

Hi. I'm Llou, a 55 year old woman who never married and has no children. I was raised in a small town in Pennsylvania ... but have moved around a lot to go to school (graduate degree in nursing), advance my career, etc. ... never really putting down any roots. However, I have lived here in Virginia for 13 years: so, I guess I have put a few roots down here.

I've been "plump" since puberty, but not really obese until middle age. Then 5 years ago, I became "pre-diabetic" -- which is a diagnosis I don't really believe exists separate from diabetes. My doctor and I agree, "pre-diabetes" is just the early stages of diabetes. So, I went on a low carb diet and lost 40 pounds in 8 months. I felt terrific and strong.

Then I started eating more carbs again, hit a plateau and couldn't lose any more weight even though I should have lost another 30-40 pounds. I was exercising 30-45 minutes per day and losing nothing. Most importantly, I felt lousy all over -- exhausted, cold, couldn't concentrate, etc.

After about a year of feeling terrible and gaining half my weight back, I got the hypothyroid diagnosis. The synthroid helped a lot, but it took 18 months to stabilize my dose. Then I broke my ankle and gained most of the rest of the weight back.

All in all, I gained back 33 of the 40 pounds I had lost and got really depressed. Finally, in September of 2010, I decided to "start over." In the last 4 months, I have lost 8 pounds -- not fast enough for me, but better than no weight loss at all.

My blood sugars have remained amazingly stable even with the weight re-gain, but it went up slightly in the last 4 months since joining SparkPeople. I'm going to have to lower my carb intake to avoid going on medication. My blood pressure (high for about 7 years) has also gone up recently.

I need to get serious about losing weight and getting fit. I think I need a thread that will help me focus on doing this at my age -- and I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Llou

I'd like to start the introductions by telling you about myself. I'm 62 (that will be 63 next month) years old, am married to the love of my life, Phil, and we have on child, our daughter Brandy who is 37. She's been married for 12 years to Kevin and they have two children (the loves of our lives!) Caleb, who is 10 and Josh who is 7.

Phil and I both grew up in central Texas but we were transferred to Georgia (with his job) about 29 years ago and have lived in Georgia since then except for 4 years (1990 to 1994) when we were transferred to California. I retired from my accounting job 3 years ago and Phil retired from his accounting job 2 years ago. Since then we've both been working hard at getting fit!

We also travel a lot - its great to finally have the time to do that!! I love to read and I love to walk - I manage to combine the two by listening to audiobooks while I walk!

I am the youngest of 9 children and am fortunate enough to have 5 surviving sisters (we lost one sister about 13 years ago to breast cancer and both of our brothers to lung cancer.) They are such a blessing to me - we are all spread out over the United States but stay close via email and phone.

Hmmm - that's all the pertinent stuff I can think of right now - I'm sure you'll learn more about me as we work together on our quest for fitness!! Marilyn in GA
