When i increased my calories burned per week on the fitness tracker, sparkpeople changed my nutrition requirements to a LOWER calorie amount. Why do you think this is?

Tip of the Day #20

As you lose weight, you need to change your caloric intake and SP will change your nutrition tracker automatically as you add your weight loss into your weight on the Start page.

However, if you are burning more calories than your fitness tracker recommends, you will get a red banner stating you need to up your calorie needs.

To do this go to your Fitness tracker page. On the top in the middle is a button that says "Change fitness goals" click on it. On the page that pop ups, scroll down to the bottom. There are two buttons near the bottom, one is for daily cardio minutes. Add the minutes to work out daily, say for instance 60. The second one is the important one, it is the "if you know how many calories you burn each week, enter it here". It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound for instance. Enter the amount of calories you think you will burn in a week, you can get an idea from your fitness tracker. Enter it and then go to your food tracker, it will have updated your nutrient values in accordance with the caloric burn you added.

Remember this is one race you want to be the tortoise!

Tip of the Day # 19

Are you interested in meeting other Sparkers in person? There is a team that is planning a Spark Rally for May 21, 2011 in Florence, KY which is right near the border and close to Cincinnati, Ohio. If you are interested you will find the Icon to the team on my Sparkpage or search for it under teams. It is called Spark Rally May 21, 2011.

It is being held at the Microtel Hotel which is located near the airport. It is a fun packed day with guest speakers and prizes and social gatherings. You can find all the details on the team page. Price for the Rally is $16.99 per person and they are running a special right now through Sunday for 2 for $25.00. There are only about 40+ tickets left, so if you are interested, buy your ticket today. You can also get a discounted rate at the hotel if you mention Sparkpeople.

There will be a video conference with the Spark Guy and maybe a surprise visit by Coach Nicole. Some of the prizes are signed copies of the Spark book.

The event is being sponsored Spark members and EARP -Exotic Animal Rescue and Pet Sanctuary.

Check it out today!

It's really important to have support along your journey to a healthier lifestyle.

I also look at the teams my friends are on and have found some that look interesting.

Tip of the Day #18

I have received several questions on how to find friends or teams and how to find support from sparkers with your same interests.

If you go the top of your screen there is a tab at the top in red that says Community. Click on it and from the drop down menu choose spark pages. On that next page you can fill in the blanks for specific information. Search for people by zipcode for example. Put in your zipcode and hit search and it will give a list of spark pages in that zipcode. You can click on any of them, go to their page and if it's one that meets your needs, add them as your friend by hitting the button on the right side of their page.

You can also search by interest. Say sport or hobby, football, knitting, quilting, dog lover etc.

The same thing for teams. From the drop down menu in Community choose spark teams. On the next page you can choose from a category of interest or search by entering a word in the search field. Click on a category and you can choose a team by location, interest, gender, age, etc. On the sparkteam page you can also click and see all of your spark teams and get a shortcut to that team or manage your teams email preferences etc.

On the Sparkteam page you can also use what is called the Sparkteams Wizard. Click on it and it will walk you through step by step locating a team that will fit your needs. It says, tell us about yourself and we will locate a team for you!

The Community tab is any easy button to find anything you are looking for, for support inspiration or motivation. You can see your friends feed there, read blogs or message boards.

Reach out to your Spark Community and you will find the support and motivation you need to help you reach your goals!

Tip of the Day #17

Have you started playing Sparkpeople Trivia yet? I play every day and it is so much fun. At first I would get a lot of them wrong. When you choose a wrong answer, it tells you what the correct answer is. So gradually you know more and more of the right answers. You get 3 sparkpoints every day for playing. It compiles your percentage and tells you what your current percentage is for the month and for all time. I am at 71% for all time and believe me, I am very proud of that. At first it was only 51%. There is a leaderboard that shows the current leaders for the month and some people get 100% for the entire month. Now I am not saying they cheat, but they must be very smart!

You could google the answer but then you are only cheating yourself, will you really remember the answer the second time if you cheat?

To play you go to your sparkpoints page, down near the bottom of the first section it says Play Trivia, click on that to go to the game. Choose answer questions now. You have to answer 3 questions correctly before you get your 3 sparkpoints for the day.

I have noticed the questions are all from Sparkpeople articles. So play some trivia, have some fun and learn about good health at the same time!

Another great tip!

I think sometimes we set weekly weight goals for ourselves then get discouraged if we don't meet them. Something I learned is that HOW MUCH WEIGHT WE LOSE EACH WEEK IS OUT OF OUR CONTROL! That was quite something to get my mind around but it's true. Our bodies will only lose what it can lose each week, it is out of our control. What is in our control is what we choose to eat, how much we choose to eat, and how much we exercise. As long as we make healthy (notice I wrote healthy, not GOOD) choices, the weight will come off.

Let's not set ourselves up for disappointment by expecting to lose a certain amount each week.

Have a great week everyone!

Tip of the Day #15

This one is one of my favorites. Every time in the past when I wanted to get healthier, I would jump on a program and think I failed because I couldn't spend 8 hours a day in a gym. I learned here on SP that even 10 minutes of exercise helps. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, all at one time. I walk the wellness walk at the office every day on my breaks. I use my office chair to do crunches! I do "bathroom stall crunches" (that one cracks me up but I learned it from a spark buddy) Every time you go to the ladies and/or mens room, which is a lot if you are drinking your water, do 10-15 squats. Park at the far end of the parking lot instead of at the door. Everything adds up! I use my stationary bike every day but sometimes I just don't have the 45 to 60 minutes to spend on it, so I do 20 minutes of intervals. Mine is automatic but you can do it on a manual one too, just keep adjusting your resistance at the same time as varying your speed! I walk my dog and she loves it!

I shovel the snow on the patios and walkways for cardio. In the summer I started using a push mower to mow the lawn. My husband uses a snowblower and a riding lawn mower, he is thrilled that I now help him with his chores. Yup, I shovel snow for cardio and it's fun! Who would have thought????

Every 10 minutes adds up! So don't get discouraged, you can do this, in baby steps! It takes 15 days to make something a habit!

Thanks for tip #14. This week has been discouraging! Last week I blew past my goal so easily and this week has been harder with not so much results. Yuck! :( Life is going to be crazy in my world for the next several years, I'm not going to wait that long - my time to get this weight off is now. I'm pounding it out another day.

Thanks for the motivation!

I agree with Melissa. #14 is an excellent reminder, Roberta. We have achieved something everyday by being here and, because there is a wide range of goals, other areas can be attained even if the scales don't 'look right'. The important thing is to stay with it.

Great tip as we come to the end of our 2nd week.

I think we put too much emphasis on what the scale says. There are many ways to see progress. Keep track of your measurements as you might be losing inches, notice that it's getting easier to do your exercise routine.

Don't let the #'s on the scale get you down! As long as we keep eating healthfully and exercising, we'll get to our goals.

Tip of the Day #14

Okay, we are coming to the end of your second week! You are starting to feel like maybe this isn't so much fun! Last week I lost 5 pounds, maybe you gained 1 this week! WTF! Right? You're thinking why do I bother? Why pass up the pizza and eat raw carrots if I'm not going to lose a ton of poundage? You are thinking if you have to get on that bike, elliptical or treadmill today you just may cry? Been there and done that! This is when you need to go back to your journal and your vision collage, or first blog and remind yourself of the big picture, your dreams, your reason for being here. It's not going to be as easy as it was the first two weeks, in fact it's going to get even harder. But you can do this!

Give yourself a break! Don't get on that bike today if you don't want to! Maybe go out for breakfast this weekend with your family and have some pancakes. Just remember that every day is a new day, first day!

Twist up your plan, shake it up and give it new life every week! Add a different exercise plan, go for a crisp cold walk or join the Y and go for a swim! Break up your day and eat a lot of small meals. Drink more water! Chat with your Spark friends in a blog, you will see that you are not alone! Week two blahs are common, you just need to ask yourself are you going to be one that is not going to make it? Are you going to be the one that quits because it's too hard and you really don't want to move your butt today or are you going to be the one that knocks it out of the park this week!!!

Hang in there team! It will be so worth it when you realize you Love exercising and you Love feeling better and you Love water and eating healthy and you Love life and it Loves you back!

Tip of the Day #13

As you are winding up your second week on your new plan, it's time to start thinking about incorporating some take out or dine in eating experiences. It's inevitable that you are going to need to eat out. It is a part of our life. But before you get faced with all the temptations and hard decisions, do some preplanning. With a little forethought, you can eat out occasionally and not go over your daily plan. Most chain restaurants and some family diners as well, have their menu online. Most also have the nutrition value of their selections as well. The Outback has an excellent menu online that lists their items that can be made the healthier way and cuts a lot of calories. If your restaurant doesn't provide this service, ask your server on which items can be made the healthier version and ask for a menu to take home for next time.

This is a little crazy but I have actually done this. I get a little take out cup like the ones some restaurants serve their dips or dressings in, with a lid. You can get them at the GFS store. I have taken my own dressing to a restaurant as I knew before hand that they don't have any I like that is low fat or sugar free. I am fussy about my salad condiments. Please don't judge! emoticon

So there it is, for what's worth, my tip of the day! Face it, we are all going to go out to eat more than one time in our lifetime. A treat is good for you, but it's also nice to know your options before you head out!

Have a great day everyone!

Tip of the Day #12

I see there is a thread created that is titled "Help each other", which is a great idea. I try to keep up with the questions and help out when I can. So I thought today's tip might help those questions. Sometimes, all you need to do is search SparkPeople and you will find your answer. At the top of most screens, like this one, there is a field that says Search. Type a word or two in there and you will get any article, blog or message etc that concerns your topic. You should find your answer in there somewhere and you get spark points for using search! Hope this helps!

Tip of the Day #11!

Do you know how to use the nutrition (food) tracker? You can use their meal plan or just add your food as you eat during the day. You can change the nutrients it tracks by clicking the More Nutrients button near the top of your tracker. You hit the radio button that says "Show Meal Plans" and SP will give you suggested menu for the day.

You can also add your own food. If you search for an item and it's not listed or listed with incorrect nutrition values (remember some of these are added by other spark members), you can add a food manually just by clicking on Add a food, search and then over on the righthand side you will see a button that says Enter a food manually!

You can also add your own recipe and calculate the portions and get the nutrition value and add to your favorites. You only have to do this once and it is always there for you. I add my husband's corn bread the other day. He is diabetic and is constantly working on new recipes that he will be able to eat that are low in sugars and no white flour. To do this you hit add a food on your tracker, over on the right hand side on the top is an orange radio button that says Recipes. Click on that and a window opens, on the right side of that window is a button that says "Access the Recipe Calculator", another window comes up and you follow the steps that say "Enter my Recipe". Don't forget step 2 which is calculate nutritional value, put in how many servings your recipe makes and it will break it down for you. You can add this to the database so everyone can see it, or just use it yourself. Save to your favorites and you are done!

Of course there a gazillion recipes already on SP that are yummy, but we all have own favorites and it's nice to be able to add them and get the breakdown on cals etc.

Enjoy everyone, remember to make it fun!

Tip of the Day #10!

I'm sure some of you have noticed your team page looks different today from yesterday! They have upgraded the SP team pages! No it's not just your system! It will take a little getting used to you, but as you see your team info is on the righthand side now. A new thing is called Team Stream, it lists all of our team activity. To filter to see just certain activity, use the stream filter radio button over there (visualize me pointing my finger over to the right side)!

Let's have a great Sparktabulous Day!

Tip of the day #9

Something I love reading on this site is the success stories! I love seeing their before and after photos. I forgot to do that when I first started so I have to use just any old photo as my before. I would suggest taking before shots, full frontal and side view! You don't need to post them if you are uncomfortable with that. Just keep them on your camera or computer. In six months, trust me, you will want to show off those photos along with a current! It's fun to see them change as you progress! It is a self-motivator. It keeps you wanting to keep going. It also is a wake up call when you take your befores! LOL. You can post them on your page right away if you are comfy with that or save them for later, but I think you will regret not taking any at all!

Let's make it a Sparktastic Day!

Tip of the Day #8

Since we are doing our Loving losing 10 pounds by Valentine's Day, I thought this would be a good time for this tip. Every Monday you will go to the main Challenge thread and update your Original post to indicate your current weight. A faster way of finding your post instead of scrowling down to find it is; hold the control key and hit the F button. A band will appear on the bottom of your screen, type in your user name and it will take you right to your own post! Ta daaa!! I love this one!

Tip of the Day #7

Ever wonder how some people have a signature line on their posts? It's easy, you can have one too! Go to your Sparkpage and hit the edit button at the top right corner. Scroll down to the right lower edge under your goals and you will see a field box that says Personal Signature. Whatever you type there will now be on your posts as a signature. You can put your name, what teams you lead or like most people, a favorite motivating quote. You can also attach a link. There is a radio button right below the Personal Signature, there you can attach a link. Make it fun and make it your own!

Tip of the Day #6

Is there someone who has really helped you on SP? Someone who inspires you, motivates you to eat better, exercise more or just makes you feel better? You can nominate them for a motivator! Go to their Sparkpage and click on the radio button on the lefthand side down near their teams. You can choose the category they motivate you in! Let someone know you appreciate their efforts..... Who knows, the next motivator could be you!

Tip of the Day #5

Did you know if you go to your start page and look on the left hand side under your weight loss progress chart is a radio button that is marked Sparksummary calendar. You click on this button and you can view your calendar. It lists your stats on any given day. You can change your preferences. You see each month at a glance and it's colorcoded to make it easier to see your values. You can go back to see any patterns that are emerging like see what weeks you lost weight and how much you exercised or weeks you gained and see how little you exercised or how many calories consumed. You can also print this which really is cool, I hang mine in my cubicle and it helps to keep me on track!

I hope each and everyone one of you reach your goals and have a blast doing it!
Happy Friday!

Tip of the Day #4!

To monitor your sparkpoints and see your daily totals, click on the sparkpoints icon on your start page. On the new page it's in the center down near the bottom near your current trophy. Click on it and you will see a list of spark points with quick links. Click on each link to get your daily spark point such as play trivia, take a poll, find a recipe etc.

You can also get to the sparkpoints page by clicking on the View your Sparkpoints icon on the top righthand side of your screen if you are on a page other than your start page.

This is something that took me awhile to catch on to: If you are signed up for emails from SP, they come to your personal email, when you read each one there is a link on the bottom to click to Get your Sparkpoints, once you do, remember to click on the login points button on the next page. I was missing that step for weeks and never got my points!

Tip of Day #3!

On your Spark points page you will find the trivia game! I play this every day! I started out at about 60% correct, after the last 8 months, I am getting so much better. Some months I have 90% correct. It's not about the winning, it's about learning from this site and as you learn the questions become easier and your score goes up! They always give the correct answer when you are wrong so when that question comes up again, hopefully you will know the answer. I am always amazed at how much I have learned on this site about things I thought I already knew! And remember, you get 3 spark points every day for playing!

Tip of the Day 2!

You can change or update your email preferences by going to your start page. At the top left corner right under your welcome name you will see a link that says Email Preferences. There you can opt out of some team emails or add daily emails like recipe of the day or exercise of the day! Remember you get Sparkpoints for reading certain emails. A couple of times I noticed I wasn't receiving any Spark emails, so I went to this link and noticed somehow the system had marked the box that said "never email me". If you notice you aren't receiving emails, check to make sure this box is not marked, it's at the bottom of the page.

To add a friend to your Sparkpage, go to their page and click on the "add a friend" button on the top righthand side! In order for someone to befriend you, you have to have a Sparkpage. If your page is set to private, they will have to wait for confirmation. Support from our friends is very important to our success!
