Dear Mom,

You are so smart to involve your kids in exercise. It's a double whammy. Lost weight for you and lifestyle education for them! I think one reason that I am so overweight is that my mom had asthma and we never did anything that involved a physical exertion. When I grew up and knew that lack of exercise was bad for me, I did little to improve it. Today I know when I don't exercise, I don't lose weight. It struck me as I was walking last week around a beautiful meadow that we are meant to run, because we are part of the food chain. Running is a part of hunting and running away from predators. A simple truth that took over 60 years to sink in. Running is very hard for me - weight and artifical knees, but I can power walk. It will be interesting to see if I will be more able to when I have lost some more weight.

I have not exercised at all this week and have put back 2 pounds. I'm off for a restart of walking everyday. I'll lose those pounds this week and start further towards my goal next week.

I did have a wonderful Thanksgiving, thank you. I hope you did, too. I was thankful that I had a SparkFriend that helped me get started on testing and meds. My readings have all been around 120 fasting, and under 148 otherwise, except one that was 168. I think that is good, but I need to read more to know for sure.

I'm leaving for my walk. Tell me your latest exercise adventures.

Carol

Hey Carol, what good news! Iceland! Sounds like an amazing opportunity coming your way. Congratulations on the great numbers.

Remember that Zumba class I mentioned yesterday? Well not only did I get through the hour, I got in an hour and 20 minutes!! I am so proud of myself. Most important, I was with good friends and I did not feel embarrassed or self conscious. I actually did it, proved I still have a bit of rhythm in these old bones and HAD FUN!!!! I came home, had dinner and my post dinner sugars were 130!!! Yay for me!!!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I am a newly type 2 diabetic as if Sept 25, 2012. I am terribly afraid of needles and dread each time I have to prick my fingers. I find switching fingers helps not to overused a single finger too much. I drum if the courage knowing the information I receive helps me manage my glucose levels and eat healthier throughout the day. I am hoping when I return for my fasting glucose labs in December 2012 that there will be improvement if not I will continue to squirm each time I prick but understand the pinch only lasts for a second or two.

Yes, checking to find which foods are spiking your numbers works. I love whole milk, well I use to love it. I now rarely drink or use it and when I do I use super skim. When I began this journey my A1C was 10.2 (June 2011) Now after close monitoring A1C is 6.9 with diet, exercise, and medication 2x a day.

Thanks again. I was glad that my reading after dinner last night was 138. My husband and I wonder if the over 400 reading was because we used the equipment incorrectly. I certainly felt good. I know what you mean about exercise. I have done a good job of being consistent the past two weeks, and my weight loss has improved.

I just booked a trip to Iceland for February. Icelandair is having a sale. The thermal pools allow for great swimming, and I hope to see the Northern Lights. My husband couldn't fathom Fairbanks, Alaska, but Reykjavik is warmer, so he said "Go for it!" I don't need to be told twice.

Talking of excercise, I better go get in a half hour! Thanks, Carol

Carol, every long journey starts with the first step! Congratulations! 120 fasting is a huge improvement! So glad you got a nice long beautiful walk in there with your husband. Such nice quality time.

I have found that my sugars come way down when I exercise. I have been doing a lot of the videos here on Sparkpeople. You can tailor a fitness program right here and it's very helpful. It is now to the point where I feel good enough to attempt a full blown Zumba class! I am going to my first class tomorrow night with some girlfriends. One of my friends teaches the class. Wish me luck!!

Again congratulations on the weight loss, the progress with your monitoring and on the nature walk!

Once again, thank you for responding. I did my own pricking this morning; it took three times to get enough blood, but I didn't feel nervous. YEAH! I found your advice about alternating, and the lancet quite helpful. This morning my gloucose level was 120, much better than last night. I also lost another 2 pounds this week, which is my goal.

My husband and I took a 75 minute walk late, last night, and were rewarded with the beautiful sound of the falls once again running after a long dry year. It was raining the whole time, but it was not too cold. We had the whole valley to ourselves.

Carol, good for you for getting started. It is extremely important to monitor your glucose to make sure you get it back in control. It is not easy but take it one step at a time. It's also important to log your results. I am not sure how often your doctor told you to check your sugars but you should check both fasting and after meals. I check twice a day and I alternate. One day I will do fasting and after dinner, and the next day I do after lunch and bedtime. This allows me to see the patterns and then I can report to my doctor. There are some great smartphone apps out there to help you track. Android has an app called On Track that allows you to keep a look of glucose, medication, blood pressure and many other things. It also creates nice reports that you can export to excel or just email. IPhone has an app called Glucose Buddy. Both are very and extremely helpful to keeping you organized. And of course there is tracking on Sparkpeople. You can track your glucose, but more important you can track your food and see what might be affecting your sugars. One serving of carbs is 15 grams. A dietician I went to had me eating 30 grams for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then 15 grams at mid morning, mid afternoon and evening snack. Evening snack was at 8 o'clock and nothing after that. Managing the carb intake along with protein will be key. Best of luck always and congrats for starting! emoticon

Thank you for your help. I finally did it;;;;;actually my husband did it with our diabetic friend watching. Obviously I needed to do this because my evening reading was 445. I thought I would be okay waiting because the reading in my doctor's office was 120, and I have been dieting and exercising since then. Well, I can't take lost time back, so I will take a pill tonight. The SP diabetic diet seems to be very similiar to the sample diets on the diabetic education sites. I see UCSanFrancisco Medical Center has a two day workshop for newly diagnosed patients. I think I'll enroll.

Thanks again for encouraging me to get started. Carol

Carol, the big thing that I've found is to be very careful when removing the cap off of the lancet. If it gets bent it will go in crooked and it will hurt more. If it's completely straight you will barely feel it. Also on the poker there is a depth dial. Start at 1 which is the most shallow and see if that helps. For the newer machines you only need a very, very tiny amount.

EDIT: Also, definitely start Metformin now if you haven't already. Even if your blood sugar is under control, a low dose will stop your pancreas from burning out.

Hey Carol,

You will do it. I just did mine and my fasting was 177. NOT GOOD! It's also important to check your blood sugar to see what food drives it. This way you begin to moderate your carb intake better.

I think it's a great idea to get a local support group. That should help a great deal. And the 20 pounds lost has probably gone a long way towards reducing your A1C already.

Keep up the great work! emoticon

Still procrastinating. I have tomorrow off, and will read all my literature that came with the machine and try to put on my big girl panties.......and do it. Thanks for asking. I think I will also call our medical center and see if there is a local support group. On the brighter side,I have lost 20 pounds since September 26th.

Hi Carol,

I am know how you feel. I got diagnosed 2 years ago and every time I have to prick my finger it is still a big deal. The truth is it is psychological only. It doesn't really hurt. You just have to psych yourself that you're going to do it and you MUST do it! More important, you really must start on the metformin. The sooner you get your sugar under control the sooner you will be on the road to recovery. Tracking your sugars is a big, big part of the recovery.

Good luck and stay in touch!

Hi, my name is Carol. I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have metforin (spelling?), and a machine to check my blood sugar level. I've had the equipment and meds for two weeks, and have not used either. I am afraid to prick my finger. I have a friend where I work who is also diabetic. Today I asked her to help me when I come back from my days off of work. I am going to try to get the courage to do it myself tomorrow, otherwise I will rely on my friend to get over my initial fear. Any tips to help me?

I like the pretty box idea too. I am currently using a small lunch thermel container which I put all of my meds in. So far, it has been working out for me very well.

I like the pretty box idea - I have my stuff (insulin pump supplies, etc) stashed in an ugly cardboard box on top of our fridge. Maybe I'll get a nice container for my things! :)

I have a pretty box with all my meds and supplies in it on the table where I eat breakfast. It's easy for me because I live alone, but my mom solved the "forgetting" problem by having my dad put a shelf in the corner by her chair for her meds.

Keep up the good work everyone!!

I'm a type I diabetic - and I check my glucose several times a day. I think one good way to remember is to maybe set out your machine where you'll see it (i.e. if you want to check first thing in the morning, set it up by the coffee machine, or somewhere where you always go to first in the morning...) Or you could try setting alarm(s) on your phone as a reminder....

So I only have to check BS once a day at random times. I have such a hard time remembering that I only do it about have the time. 60% to be exact. I met with my nutritionist today. So what are some ideas to remember. I have to do some fasting and some after meals.

I love my life, I just need to learn to love me.

Hello,
I take Metformin before going to bed and Glipizide before meals (usually). My blood sugars are always high after meals. Do u know if changing timings would help?

Were you using the Quick Tracker? It is still there but may be hidden. You will find the heading on the lower left hand side of the start page with a "show" button next to it that will open it up. Once you "show" it on your page, it should always be there until you decide to "hide" it again.

If you used the other page as mentioned in this thread, you can get to it easily by clicking the Track My Weight link.

Please let me know if I can help with something else.

my sparkpeople start page used to have a great place to easily log my blood glucose for the day but it seems to have disappeared just as I needed it. Any idea where that's gone? Is it still anywhere on the site? I'm not liking the current method of logging in the weigh in section

Frequently we get questions about how to set up insulin or other medications. You can set up insulin tracking by setting up another measurement to track. This link will walk you through the process.
