thank you so much. I did go to a place locally called Running Ect. they do a test to see if you need stability or just "normal" shoes. After my initial test the guy thought I needed normal, but when I had them on & then did the treadmill test he could see I did slightly roll my ankles, so I needed the stability shoes. I paid right at $100. So I'm 1/2 relieved that it wasn't $200. But now that I know what I need I know I can get them for less.

I am not planning on being a real "runner" I do more jog. I've been walking/jogging the 3 miles then 2 days a week I do water aerobics. Tonight was not as quick for the pain, & it subsided toward the end again. I am making sure I stretch afterward too.

Thank you all for your encouragement & help!!! I count myself blessed to know you!!!

One more thing - if you're seriously having shin splints, STOP for a few days. Do other things that don't involve the walking/running aspect of working out. Give your tendons and legs a chance to do some healing.

I had shin spints as well, and found a few things. First, SparkPeople has a lot of good articles. Second, don't push too hard. Don't go from walking to running all at once. Start with walking, then maybe jogging a little, then adding running slowly. It was really hard for me to do it slowly, especially since I had signed up for a 5k at the end of February and I wanted to GOOOOO!

Still, pushing too hard is going to hurt you.

As for shoes, you should be able to go into any sporting goods store that sells running shoes, and ask for last year or the year before's styles. They're still good shoes, and they WERE $200 last year or the year before, but this year, because they're not the STYLE you can get them for $20 or $30 (this is what we did for my son for cross country, on the recommendation of his coach).

Beth, keep up with the exercises.

Also, it is a great idea to get fitted for proper shoes. They do not have to cost $200! Go to a running store and explain your running history and shin splint concern to the sales person. Also make sure you tell him or her your budget! There are many, many shoes that are appropriate for running that cost far less than $100! My favorites go for less than $60!

Make sure you replace your shoes when they have between 300 and 500 miles on them.

I'm really new to all this running, but I love the feeling I get when I do get to run. I started last summer walking a 3 mile path. Needless to say winter came & inside to the treadmill I went. A week ago I went back out to the path and very quickly got hit with shin splints. I really want to run a 5k that I have signed up for on April 2nd. My goal is to do it in 30 minutes. Right now I can walk it with the shin splints in about 50 minutes, I can barely run at all. I am trying to do some exercises that are supposed to help (I pray they do) but if anyone has suggestions (besides buying $200. shoes) I'm in! I am planning on going to a shoe store that tests your running ability and all, I will let ya know what happens.
If anyone is in Hampton, VA I'd love ya to join me!!!!! Thanks have a a super blessed day!!!
