A heel striker? I'll have to do more research on that one. The heel didn't start bothering me until this spring. I'd already completed 2 half marathons, a nice distance a part and was training for a 3rd when it all started. I think because of old shoes. It improved a lot between the March half (worst time) and July half, so my July time was one of my best. But then I did too much walking while on vacation and didn't rest it enough the first few weeks after the July half. It's feeling pretty good right now and I'll see how it feels after Sunday's 5K.

Thanks

Lisa, you have more than enough time to get ready for your race. Stay focused, fuel clean, and make sure you are working on a strength program on off days which will benefit your running.

MSTIRES, just curious if you're a heel striker or not. In Jan 2013, I injured my meniscus during my 7th Half. I did PT for 2 months then learned Pose Running. I don't heel strike anymore until I get a bit tired. I see when it happens and quickly insure my pose is back in good form. No problems with my Meniscus or my feet since! Good luck and be safe on your recovery. If you are pacing your DH, you will be able to keep a safe speed as well. Since you enjoy your swimming, you might want to cross train with cycling. Sprint Triathlon, perhaps?

Great to have both of you join us!

Sherrie, one of the things I stress to all new runners is to never be intimidated by others. Find your run, focus on your purpose, and aspire to do your best.
Last week I joined a swim group after overcoming my initial fears I wouldn't be able to hang. I didn't do as amny laps as the others but gained an enormous amount of confidence. The results? Check out my next couple of blogs. I hope they will help.

So good to know that it is ok to walk if you have to. I wouldn't want to but of course it is in the back of my mind. Thanks for the encouragement. I talked to a "real runner" the other day and I got some names of running clubs in my area. I'm still somewhat intimidated as I really want to but I still think I am "out of my league"? Getting actually started is, well, scary. emoticon emoticon

I love to hear about running for causes and our Team Members registering for 5Ks. I always look for races in my area on the web. Then look for something that would be different, fun, and possibly a good cause! I'm telling you all now, if you are training today, I would schedule a 5K 6 weeks down the road. Why wait?
When you've finished this training, you are ready. A race is nothing more than a test of your training. After the race, you assess and work on getting better. If you stop to take a break and walk it out, your not the first to do it. I did it yesterday during my 5K leg of my Triathlon BUT I finished. That's what it's all about.
The more 5Ks you do, the better runner you become. It has been a key to success for me in my 3 years of maintaining goal weight.Let's do this!

I don't have any race experiences yet. I have only ever done a 5K walk for Make-a-Wish. I had my goal for this year to jog around our lake here 1.2 mi. without stopping and I accomplished that on May 13th. My next goal is to run a 5K and then I found this on spark people and started my training on Monday. I am excited but I am not sure how to do this. Right now I am more of a runner-want-to-be. emoticon My name is Sherrie and I am going to be 58 next month! emoticon How do I sign up?

Outstanding! Training strength & cardio safely, and fueling properly is halfway there to a healthy lifestyle. A race a month keeps you in training mode and better shape. It is one of my secrets to success I've owned since I started SparkPeople in Oct 2010! Stay strong!

Katyayanna,
I have to ask if you've spoken with your doctor about what you're going to do. I did that before I started this program, when I started to walk/run a 5K, when I ran a full 5K, then a Half Marathon. That was over a period of a year. The reason I went to the doctor was to determine if I was fit enough for every stage of my running. It's better to be safe and cover the bases from step one.

This is my first week on the program *but* I just heard that there's going to be a zombie-themed 5k in my city before the end of the month. Cons: I'm not sure if I'm in good enough shape to run this; I'm terrified of zombies. Pros: I'm sure I could walk a 5k!; it would probably be a fun kind of scary.

I think I'm going to sign up just as a gauge for how fit I am (or am not. We'll see).

Magnolia, posting your upcoming races is fine. I encourage others to continue to run & enter 5Ks at a minimum to accompany your good fueling habits. It's a formula that helped me reach my goal and I want to continue to share that.
emoticon
I'm here because I have the experience of so many races over the last 3 years. I want to share that with first time racers. I will never forget how I was at my first race. I now realize that I own my race and will run it with no intimidation. The other runners are irrelevant to my plan. If any thing, I use them as pacers and targets to pass. BUT it's still my race to run. If I decide to walk a 5K, I will do so. I need to blog this out as I just had a decision to make yesterday that makes my point. Truly, it's my pleasure to share what I've experienced with others! No matter what, I still learn from others here.

I'm doing a casual 5K on Saturday called Women on the Run. It's for a group that encourages girls to run and do other sports. It's not my first race though, is this thread for new runners and their first race?

Mirage you're wayyyy past 5K Your Way Running Program! We're eating your dust back here!

I like that you all have found races that appeal to you and get you out there. Because we live in Florida (Tampa Bay), we have so many races to choose from. It's essential that we research races and choose for their "uniqueness!" D & I are looking at Half Marathons to do now. We've scratched a couple just because the course looks boring!
(I also check out the finisher bling offered!)

The good thing is we start training for our goal race, and we do it! One race leads to another and living the lifestyle becomes a whole lot easier and fun!

Stay strong, stay focused, train well, & have fun!

Sassy you have to tell me how the Color Run goes. I was thinking about doing that one too, but it isn't until November here.

I decided to sign up for the 5k Foam Fest (http://5kfoamfest.com/), which is a little atypical as far as 5ks go, but was motivating to me to commit to. I started a team and invited some friends so hopefully I won't have to slide through the mud on my own. :)

Sassy, I've heard nothing but fun things about the Color Run! It's a great first race. Doing it with family & friends makes it that much better! I love when other runners make the commitment, register for a %K, then train to realize their goal. You find out a lot about yourself and it's a good thing! All the best and don't hesitate to shout if you need anything!

I have signed up for my first 5K happening October 5th! It is a Color Run and several family and friends have signed up as a team. I is going to be a first time for several of us. I have been using a C25K app on my phone but it doesn't work very well so I am anxious to start using the SparkPeople training program.

I love that y'all have stepped out and set a 5K goal! Stay focused, strong, and run your race! It's more about having fun and finishing. Remember to smile for the photographers at the finish!

Signed up today for Run for the Hills 5K in Fruitland, Idaho. It's a fundraiser for Love Inc. This will only be the second 5k race I've ever done and I walked the first one. I'm determined to run the whole thing this time.

Found out there is a 5K this Saturday in Fredericksburg. It is a food drive so thought it would be fun to do even if I can't run the whole thing. I'm interested to see what kind of energy I get from being around other runners. Yes, I did imply that I am a runner too!

Monty, I've lived most of my life here except for when I traveled around the world with my Marine husband. I grew up in a running family. If you are familiar with any running clubs here, my dad was the president of the GNATS and was a member of the Washington Roadrunners. We were at races or training sessions almost every weekend. I loved to run when I was young but when high school came around my focus went elsewhere. It's fun getting back out there again.

I signed up for a Color Me Rad run in late August. Thought it would be a good first one, since it is all about fun and not even timed. I shouldn't (I hope!) have any trouble running the whole thing by then, but I'll be more interested in getting as much color as possible, so I won't take it too seriously! Since signing up for that one, I have been pretty intrigued by the huge number of really creative themes on these. Some of the trail runs, night runs, obstacle courses sound really fun (am I in shape enough for those, I wonder?). Even saw a zombie run for your lives 5k. Too funny!! I like the idea of beautiful scenery and/or a bit of adventure thrown in. And so many are for good charities - you got to like staying in shape for a good cause, as well as for yourself. I'll keep an eye out and maybe find one I can do in September, too.

The Electric Run in August.
This would be my second 5K. I walked most of my first, but this time I want to be able to run all the way. So, I am in training for it!

I got an email from the people putting on the Lighthouse and Lake run. Apparently the school district IS hosting the race on July 20th after all and it should still be listed on all the official websites, etc... whoever deleted it apparently got confused because it happened to be on the same date as another event that was cancelled.

If anyone else happens to have signed up for Lighthouse and Lake in Reedsport, Oregon, it is still advertised on several running websites, and they sure took my registration money not long ago, but it has apparently been cancelled for at least a MONTH!

There are several runs named after Pre. The one in Coos Bay is a much better allergy run. I remember you said you have allergies. Willamette Valley (Eugene) is ROUGH in May and June.

Coos Bay is on the Coast - and it is a great place for allergies all year, although you don't want to run there fall through EARLY spring because of wind. But in the summer, I can't imagine any place better! My mom lived on the Oregon coast for years and I loved going there. My head cleared up and I felt wonderful. I never wanted to leave. It's even better than the East Coast (I'm from Va.)

I'm sure you will feel wonderful!

I have relatives moving to Bend, possibly in this coming year! That happens, and there's no question when we visit, it will coincide with a trip to Coos Bay and the 35th Annual Prefontaine Memorial Run next year!

Anyone coming to Eugene for the June races? (Prefontaine, etc?) Just heard on the news that grass pollen's a problem. It usually is, along with mold and scotch broom, but the rain is just now stopping and a 2 week spell of dry weather is setting in - not long enough to dry up the mold. The basin shape of the Willamette valley traps the grass pollen, which is also affected by the late spring. So... bring your inhalants and your allergy pills. And good luck. It's a beautiful area, but it's better to run here in July.
