I am signing up for a race in NJ on May 17--Spring into Summer 5K. I did it 2 years ago and want to beat that time--so under 36 minutes!

Outstanding! I love to hear when our members schedule a race. It's a great goal to train for and you're almost there. Have fun, and hopefully, we'll see a race report! I always learn something new from reports!

Outstanding! Training strength & cardio safely, and fueling properly is halfway there to a healthy lifestyle. A race a month keeps you in training mode and better shape. It is one of my secrets to success I've owned since I started SparkPeople in Oct 2010! Stay strong!

Thanks for the encouragement. Ran a 5K for the new Nemours hospital last Saturday. working on shaving some time off my total. It's so hot here for so many months and I'm too lazy to get up and run in the mroning during the week so I'm now getting back into the running more consistantly!

Katyayanna,
I have to ask if you've spoken with your doctor about what you're going to do. I did that before I started this program, when I started to walk/run a 5K, when I ran a full 5K, then a Half Marathon. That was over a period of a year. The reason I went to the doctor was to determine if I was fit enough for every stage of my running. It's better to be safe and cover the bases from step one.

This is my first week on the program *but* I just heard that there's going to be a zombie-themed 5k in my city before the end of the month. Cons: I'm not sure if I'm in good enough shape to run this; I'm terrified of zombies. Pros: I'm sure I could walk a 5k!; it would probably be a fun kind of scary.

I think I'm going to sign up just as a gauge for how fit I am (or am not. We'll see).

Magnolia, posting your upcoming races is fine. I encourage others to continue to run & enter 5Ks at a minimum to accompany your good fueling habits. It's a formula that helped me reach my goal and I want to continue to share that.
emoticon
I'm here because I have the experience of so many races over the last 3 years. I want to share that with first time racers. I will never forget how I was at my first race. I now realize that I own my race and will run it with no intimidation. The other runners are irrelevant to my plan. If any thing, I use them as pacers and targets to pass. BUT it's still my race to run. If I decide to walk a 5K, I will do so. I need to blog this out as I just had a decision to make yesterday that makes my point. Truly, it's my pleasure to share what I've experienced with others! No matter what, I still learn from others here.

I'm doing a casual 5K on Saturday called Women on the Run. It's for a group that encourages girls to run and do other sports. It's not my first race though, is this thread for new runners and their first race?

I like that you all have found races that appeal to you and get you out there. Because we live in Florida (Tampa Bay), we have so many races to choose from. It's essential that we research races and choose for their "uniqueness!" D & I are looking at Half Marathons to do now. We've scratched a couple just because the course looks boring!
(I also check out the finisher bling offered!)

The good thing is we start training for our goal race, and we do it! One race leads to another and living the lifestyle becomes a whole lot easier and fun!

Stay strong, stay focused, train well, & have fun!

I decided to sign up for the 5k Foam Fest (http://5kfoamfest.com/), which is a little atypical as far as 5ks go, but was motivating to me to commit to. I started a team and invited some friends so hopefully I won't have to slide through the mud on my own. :)

Sassy, I've heard nothing but fun things about the Color Run! It's a great first race. Doing it with family & friends makes it that much better! I love when other runners make the commitment, register for a %K, then train to realize their goal. You find out a lot about yourself and it's a good thing! All the best and don't hesitate to shout if you need anything!

I have signed up for my first 5K happening October 5th! It is a Color Run and several family and friends have signed up as a team. I is going to be a first time for several of us. I have been using a C25K app on my phone but it doesn't work very well so I am anxious to start using the SparkPeople training program.

Found out there is a 5K this Saturday in Fredericksburg. It is a food drive so thought it would be fun to do even if I can't run the whole thing. I'm interested to see what kind of energy I get from being around other runners. Yes, I did imply that I am a runner too!

Monty, I've lived most of my life here except for when I traveled around the world with my Marine husband. I grew up in a running family. If you are familiar with any running clubs here, my dad was the president of the GNATS and was a member of the Washington Roadrunners. We were at races or training sessions almost every weekend. I loved to run when I was young but when high school came around my focus went elsewhere. It's fun getting back out there again.

I signed up for a Color Me Rad run in late August. Thought it would be a good first one, since it is all about fun and not even timed. I shouldn't (I hope!) have any trouble running the whole thing by then, but I'll be more interested in getting as much color as possible, so I won't take it too seriously! Since signing up for that one, I have been pretty intrigued by the huge number of really creative themes on these. Some of the trail runs, night runs, obstacle courses sound really fun (am I in shape enough for those, I wonder?). Even saw a zombie run for your lives 5k. Too funny!! I like the idea of beautiful scenery and/or a bit of adventure thrown in. And so many are for good charities - you got to like staying in shape for a good cause, as well as for yourself. I'll keep an eye out and maybe find one I can do in September, too.

I got an email from the people putting on the Lighthouse and Lake run. Apparently the school district IS hosting the race on July 20th after all and it should still be listed on all the official websites, etc... whoever deleted it apparently got confused because it happened to be on the same date as another event that was cancelled.

There are several runs named after Pre. The one in Coos Bay is a much better allergy run. I remember you said you have allergies. Willamette Valley (Eugene) is ROUGH in May and June.

Coos Bay is on the Coast - and it is a great place for allergies all year, although you don't want to run there fall through EARLY spring because of wind. But in the summer, I can't imagine any place better! My mom lived on the Oregon coast for years and I loved going there. My head cleared up and I felt wonderful. I never wanted to leave. It's even better than the East Coast (I'm from Va.)

I'm sure you will feel wonderful!

Anyone coming to Eugene for the June races? (Prefontaine, etc?) Just heard on the news that grass pollen's a problem. It usually is, along with mold and scotch broom, but the rain is just now stopping and a 2 week spell of dry weather is setting in - not long enough to dry up the mold. The basin shape of the Willamette valley traps the grass pollen, which is also affected by the late spring. So... bring your inhalants and your allergy pills. And good luck. It's a beautiful area, but it's better to run here in July.

Signed up for second one. This is in July and is part pavement, part beach! I have never tried to run in the sand before, so this will be 100% new! I live an hour away and have work and school so won't have much time to practice. Maybe I can find a kid's sandbox?

Fortunately, I tutor anatomy and physiology and know the foot and ankle inside and out, literally. I have studied my shoe wear, studied my ache patterns, felt how I land when I walk and run, had a physical therapist watch me and had Xrays done. I would LOVE to go to an actual running store, but the closest one is an hour away. So that isn't happening this week! The difference in today's new shoes was amazing, though. I already feel better after running in new shoes than I did walking without them.

Relatives are moving to Bend, OR. They've already invited me to "Pre Country" & I said I would do a race there for sure!

It's the first thing I will tell anyone who wants to run! Insure that when you go to a RUNNING STORE, you get a gait analysis for a proper shoe! I see people in Dept Stores & Sports stores trying on shoes and clueless as to what they need. Do not get hung up on brand either or fall in love with your shoe. I ran for 2 years with the ASICS Kayano 17 & 19. After an updated analysis in Dec 2012, (when you've burned out your shoe, get another analysis done.) I found that my gait was improving and now I'm fitting into the new ASICS 3000. You'll be loving your run in no time! Cool runnings!

Just signed up for one on Prefontaine's own turf June 23rd. I hurt my ankle so I don't dare start practicing again til I go out and get some real shoes. I've been wearing some I got at a thrift store. Oops. Big mistake.

Great to have you reporting your progress, Lucy! All the people I know who have dome the Color Run have reported nothing but fun. I also got tips from them. Wear a white Tee, whether you walk/jog, wog, run or crawl, make sure you are on the outsides of the pack, and dance shake, do anything crazy to get attention at the color stations for maximum color! EVERYONE is looking to have a good time, so don't be nervous, have fun, and embrace the experience!

I am going to do a FUN run for my first 5k, it's a Color Run on June 16th. I am really excited about it, but a tad bit nervous, too. I guess I am hoping because it is more of a FUN run, I won't be as nervous about it!
emoticon

I had previously gone through one of the other sparkpeople 5k running programs, but because it was an 8 week program, I thought I better do this 5 week one since June will be here before I know it. I just finished day 2 of running, and I am feeling pretty good. Hopefully, day 3 goes just as well!

GOOD LUCK to ALL!

Hi Stephanie!
Welcome! You go ahead and join that most meaningful race. I'm sure there will be a mix of participants making the effort for sucha great cause. I've completed my 26.2 for those Boston Marathon runners. I'm doing another fundraising run (2.62K) for Boston on May 8 in St Petersburg! I invite all locals to join me.

You start this program and you'll be ready even if you walk the race. I know you will come back and share the experience. If you have any need, don't hesitate to address them here.
Remember that this is your run and you run it the way you want. Cool runnings...

I haven't officially signed up, but I think joining this team might have been the step I needed to do in order to convince myself to just do it. Plus the race is to support Boston's One Fund, since I live only ten minutes outside of Boston, I think it'll be good for me and everyone else involved.

I am signed up for a 5K on May 11th. It is a run for Missions with a pancake breakfast at the end! I am running it with 2 of my grandchildren (they are 10 and 12).

Personally, I recommend a 5K a month. That coupled with training will keep you in shape and watching what you eat. I might have been running a bit too much so I'm cutting down to one run a month minimally. That will keep me maintaining for sure!

I am going to sign up for Race for Life on 15th July. I have done this twice before now, and it's always a great atmosphere. It's a women's only race for breast cancer.
I would like to do a 10k by the end of the year. There is one taking place in my home town, so I may sign up for that depending on how my training progresses.

That 3-Day will be a great motivator for proper training. My sister did it a while ago and I remember her training for it. Meanwhile with your runs in May, that will keep you forcused. All the best.

I'm doing a 5K on April 7. I've been jogging again since October and have casually done the training program but now am seriously training again. I'm in Week 2 of the program and am excited/terrified about my race!

I'm also thinking about doing another 5K in June and one in July.

I'm registered for a local 5k run/walk on April 20. I'm hoping to use this program as a starting point in my training. Once it's completed I'll be focusing on endurance and possibly speed if I'm able to run the entire 5k comfortably. This will be my first 5k so I've got a lot of hard work to do.

Hey Toni!
That 8K is 5 weeks away. You should be able to shake the bug. I did Emergen-C to head off an illness and was ready a week before to do my 10K last week. I'm taking it easy now as I have the Gasparilla Distance Classic Half Marathon on Feb 24. You've done a 5K, that 8K is a gret next step. You do that 8K and the 10K will be a breeze. DSSECRETS & I agreed that we love that 10K distance, more so than a 5K! But we've done 4 Halfs in the last year. In any case, I'm excited for you as I know you will enjoy it. Whether you walk, jog, wog, or run it with intervals, finishing is the goal. I know you'll do it! Need any assistance, just holla!

There's a Saint Paddy's Day 8K coming up soon, I'd like to sign up for that. I've run 5K's but nothing more, and really want to push it up to a 10K this year. An 8K seems reasonable, but I've been sick the past week & haven't done any running. I've started walking again, and hopefully will run a couple of miles tomorrow, that's the plan anyway. emoticon

I did Santa's Twilight 5K on Honeymoon Island this past Christmas with my wife & 6 year old granddaughter. I ran it, finished, then retraced about 3/4 of a mile walking to get to them as they were still walking. I realized I was a bit disoriented when running, focusing on the road. Walking it was so much easier. Funny thing is I had already done a "speed" Say No to Drugs 5K earlier that morning...and beat that time in the dark!

I swear by Jeff Galloway's methods. I know so many who use Jeff's interval plan on Half and Full Marathons. The method makes total sense AND, irrelevant but proven, you will pass a lot of runners who passed you earlier in the race! Train well and run well!

I'm not that confident in running in the dark. I can be rather clumsy and I'm always afraid I will end up wiping out.

There's a race coming up at the beginning of Feb., but I'm not sure if I'll be running it. The weather here has been very cold plus I haven't done much outdoor running this winter. Will have to see in the next couple of weeks.

I'm going to order Jeff Galloway's Half Marathon book.

I love night races! I 'm a bit intimidated by not being able to see the road when it's too dark. I pay attention and still embrace the moment. Would love to have you share your race report. All the best on it, MOMMABOOMS!

My next race is part of the dark sky festival for folks to view the stars in a community that was built with living within the environment as part of the community. All the lighting in the community is shielded so that one can still see the stars at night. Race starts at 7 pm! Should be a fun one

I see a lot of smart runners here! As soon as I finished a 5K on my own, I immediately signed up for an official event. Yes, it was my slowest time to date BUT it was my first benchmark! Since Nov 2010, I've done 29 5Ks and 2 Half Marathons. I'm in the middle of a personal challenge to do 3 Halfs and a 10K within 90 days so I qualify to join Half Fanatics. (Google it)

The bottom line is that this program kicked it all off for me. That's why I'm still a team member and share my run experiences. I later advanced to the Jeff Galloway Training Plan which uses interval training (run/walk) to gain endurance and speed. No matter what, my primary goal is to finish!

Stay positive, train smart, and run well!

MRS_CIESIOLKA,

I go to the Start page and scroll down. Under the part where it says how many calories you have to burn, and how much weight you've lost there is a box that says Personalized Programs above it. In the box there's a link to my virtual races. If you click that it should take you to the Virtual Race Home. And your race should be there.

I just downloaded the pdf for the 5k I will be running nov 18th!!!! Day one of my workout starts tomorrow - I am soooo doing this! emoticon

Fyi - ran the race in 29:05 and won 1st in my age division! Love this plan because it is just challenging enough to keep pushing you but it is gradual and you see lots of small improvements with each workout!
