I'm always happy to see new runners join the team. Do not hesitate to "holla' on anything. One thing I believe in is sharing experiences. It's a great tool to learn! The second..."Embrace the Run!" It can be so much fun and habit forming for good health! Stay strong!

Hello runners! I joined this group because I want to get more serious about running. So far I can do a walk/run interval but I am hoping to build up to 5K straight and improve on time.

Glad to be onboard. Seems like a great community!

I've run a bunch of races over the last few years. Right now, I'm working on running injury free. Training at a gradual pace gives your body a good chance to accept the challenge. If you have any questions, we can find the answers! Stay strong, focused, and train well!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Sarah and I'm 26 years old and live in Michigan.

I just finished the 5K Walk/Jog Program yesterday and will be starting this program tomorrow. I've never made it further than the walk/jog program so I'm excited to be able to run a whole 5K.

I did the Color Run a few weeks back and it took me about 42 minutes, but caused me some pain. Since then, I've slowed down my pace to prevent injuries. At the pace I'm at now, I can comfortable jog for 3 minutes and can't wait to go longer.

Those are good rules! I've been reading the blogs of runners my age and up (masters) and finding that many of them purposely hold themselves back because they've found that the urge to start too fast like the young pups just increases the likelihood of injury. After the first little bit, they feel their own rhythm and run faster or not, as their bodies and minds tell them is appropriate. I do not want to be embarrassed or disappointed, so this is advice I vow to remember.

Great to see you all! Do not hesitate to ask for any advice or help. We share experiences like runners do, to help others! That's the essence of the "runners bond!" In the last 30 months I've done over 38 5Ks. I want to let every one know the number one rule of running your first race is to finish! The second is to "RUN YOUR RACE!" ! I'm a huge fan of that. Each one of you will find your 'run." We just want to ease any intimidation or apprehension we all get before the first one. Don't hesitate to holla!
Cool runnings, Y'all!

Larisa here. New to jogging, but liking it. Never thought I could before, due to asthma and a high starting pulse (tachycardia). However, I passed a stress test, I have learned to listen to my body, and I have learned to adjust my speed up and down. I am delighted to find I can do this, after years of thinking I could not. So here I am!
I live in Oregon. Will be looking for some fall 5ks to compete in (outdoors). For now, just working on treadmills.

I am also new to running/jogging, started this year at age 61, and just finished the 5K Your Way Walk/Jog Program. I would like to be able to jog an entire 5K but was not certain how to increase my jogging time so decided to try this Program. Wish me luck, I am registered for a 5K scheduled 05/25/13 and hope to be able to jog the majority of the race!

I am hoping my son will be able to get time off from his job so we can run a 5K together and visit the college he plans to attend this fall. I have not been as active this winter as last and am looking forward to the motivation to get outside and do something together with my son! I also want to take part in some of the various color runs happening around the country. May as well have some fun while I'm at it :-)

Hi, I'm Stephanie. I joined a city-wide fitness challenge program yesterday and they encouraged us to end the program by running (or walking) a 5K on June 8th. I know I could definitely walk a 5K at this point, but I want to be able to run it. I signed up with a friend, who is a little more skeptical about running it, so I told her I was going to come on sparkpeople and find us a good program to follow in order to get ready to race. I am hoping that it will be good motivation to get back on track with working out and living a healthy lifestyle!

Hello Everyone,
I decided to make exercise a habit and have chosen running to be part of that. To motivate myself and stay on track I have signed up for a couple of 5k this summer. This training program looks like a good way to get on track without overdoing as I tend to do when starting exercise.
I just finished day one and it was so doable that I am looking forward to continuing and running my 5k june 1.

Welcome PRAIRIEJES! I truly laugh at age numbers now. I started running at 60 accumulating over 50 races including 5Ks, 10Ks & Half Marathons, did my first Duathlon last month at 62 and will do my first Triathlon in Sept at 63!
If you have any questions, just holla!
Let's rock!

Hi Everyone,
Looking forward to this training program and to being a part of this group. I just turned sixty (yikes!) and have been running the last three summers/fall. Unfortunately this winter has been extra long and so I know I need to ease back into running. I think this program will be great for me. Here's to all of our efforts!

Hello everybody!
My name is Romana and I'm from Austria.
In the last 6month I've lost 22lbs. My next goal is to finish a 5k or better a 6k... Because I signed up for a 'couple race' with my boyfriend... And it's 6km... But okay... :)
I'm very excited and I'm happy that I found this team!
Woohoo!

Hi Everyone,
I did a 2K run (although I would call what I did slow jogging) 3 weeks ago with my grandchildren. My daughter and son-in-law did the 10K. Now I am signed up to do a 5K on May 11th. I started following the couch to 5K and then ran across this and since I love SparkPeople, thought it was a good place for me. I am 57 and have never run in my life! My goal for the 2K was to complete and not walk and I was able to accomplish that goal and came in about in the middle of the pack although all my grandchildren were ahead of me! For the 5K I would like to be able to jog the entire distance but I will not be terribly disappointed if I have a couple minutes of walking in there. emoticon

Hello everyone!
I am excited for this challenge because I will be running a 5-k at my school on April 27th. I was looking for a good training program and started this 5 week plan on Saturday. Of course, because I started on Saturday it switched to week 2 the day after my first attempt, but I will just adjust my own plan. I have never really been fond of running, but summer of 2011 I was in great shape and was running all the time (training with my intense volleyball coach). When I was no longer required to workout daily, I enjoyed the time off...and lost my ability to enjoy running once again. My goal is to lose weight, regain confidence in myself, and learn to love running again. I remember how amazing I felt and how fast I could go! I will do what I can to get back to that place.

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." -1 Corinthians 6:19-20 -RPJ

Hi, I've just signed up for this programme and will be doing my first run this evening.
I have done the couch to 5k plan a couple of times, but then never progressed further at the end. This time around I want to finish the programme and then train for a 10k.

Newbie here! I'm 53 and it's about time, right?

I am slow and more of a "lumberer" than a "runner", but I am running faster than my friends who are on the couch!

I am off today to buy good shoes. I look forward to participating here.

Welcome, Michelle! You have more than enough time to get ready. No matter what, remember to run your race at your pace! Stick to this training plan and you will be fine. Also embrace interval training. I'm sure your family knows that strategy. Know that we're here for you and that you will achieve your goal! Stay strong, focused, and be well!

Hi! I'm Michelle. I've done a few 5k's before but have NEVER been very serious about them. I've always walked. A couple I have walked, ran until I couldn't breathe, walked some more.

Hubby is a runner, son who just left for Marine boot camp 2 weeks ago is a runner and our other two younger girls like to run as well. Guess I'm odd gal out. I've always thought I'd run if being chased by a cougar..or if there was a hot firefighter in front of me wanting to be chased. Ha ha ha

For Valentines Day I purchased entries into a glow in the dark 5k for hubby and I. I just realized today that it's 6 weeks away. Thinking I better get by feet in gear! Ahhh, hope I'm lucky enough to cross the fnish line running with him...and not on a stretcher!! emoticon

Hi everyone! I'm Marianne and I'm from PA. I'm planning to run my first 5K on June 7. I have NEVER run and I'm looking to learn all I can. Currently I'm working with a trainer on strength and core 2x's per week. Starting next Fri. I'll be participating in a 10-wk cardio program and will be working out with another trainer for about an hour 3x's per week. I figure all of this will help prepare me for what I consider to br the physical challenge of my life. I'm turning in 50 in May!

Looking forward to getting to know ya'll!

Welcome Everyone to a program that might just change your entire life! To make a long story short, My first 5K was the St Pete Times Turkey Trot 2010 and I walked the entire race. I was 60! I started this program after the walk/jog a 5K! I wanted to run.Today, I've done over 31 official 5Ks and 3 Half Marathons. When I started, I couldn't walk a block and a half! Yes, this Program works! Embrace it and have fun with it.
emoticon
Today, I'm still a team member because I believe in this program! I've also accumulated a lot of run experience in the 5K and still tweak my run plan to become better. Today, I'm paying it forward to all my teammates on this team!

Welcome Val!

You are right. Running on a treadmill and running outside are 2 diff. things. It is much harder to run outside. I used to run in my early 20's and then quit. Last Spring after doing alot of walking, I decided I needed to do something different ad running was at the top of my list. I started with this program and it worked great. Just remember, you will have hard days and easy days no matter how far into the program you are. Just don't give up. It is a very rewarding Sport and the feeling of completing a race is awesome.

I've been a member of SP for about 5 yrs. Over that time I have tracked my nutrition off and on.(Mostly off!) I've cont'd to visit SP mostly for the social interaction but I"m currently only active in one team.

When I was pregnant with my second son(28 yrs ago) I would have dreams of running even though I hadn't ran or exercised since highschool. Now I'm 54 yrs old and have decided to follow that dream.

The program looks very doable. I've recently ran for short periods on a treadmill(in my home.) My goal is to be able to complete a 5K outdoors. I have a feeling the treadmill and the road are two completely different animals.

While I do this I'm going to get my eating back in order. I have the tools and the knowledge, I just need to utilize them.

I wish all of the members a healthy and fit New Year!

Hello all! Starting the training program tomorrow (11/5) and signed up for a virtual 5k run for the week after it ends. I've been "running" since March, but have a really hard time running a whole 5k. That is my goal and I'm hoping that following an actual training program will help me finally get there. Good luck to everyone on this journey!!

Thank you Jennik2. Good thing I asked. For some reason I thought it was 3 1/4 ( 3.250) and I would have tried to jog that far.

Sue,

Just do the 5K at whatever pace you can. I think of it as being all about beating my best time. A 5K is 3.1 miles.

Hi all! My name is Britney and I am a 22 year old military wife and mommy to a beautiful 8 week old boy. I am somewhat of a veteran here on Sparkpeople, joining July of 2007 and having lost 40 pounds by the end of that year. With my time spent here, I have really learned a lot and ultimately have made a lifestyle change. After a very stressful and complicated pregnancy though, I gained about 70 pounds overall. Though I have some work to do I am optimistic that I can get back down to a healthy weight not only for me but for my husband and son as well.

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you learn to let go, things go wrong so that you learn to appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so that you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall a part so that better things can fall together."

I just finished the walk/jog program so I decided to keep going and try this. I gave myself ten weeks to finish the 5 week walk/jog program and finished in 9 weeks. I will do the same here since that seemed to work for me before.

This is my first virtual 5k. I work out on the treadmill a lot and other machines but the treadmill is my favorite. Since I work out 60 minutes a day, try to, I will use the bike in my last 15 minutes for a cool down. I like to push myself too see how far I can go and looking forward to my first virtual 5k race :) I am also trying to get myself up to 6.0 on the treadmill. Right now, for me to keep jogging, I stay at 5.4 on the treadmill.

Hello! I have always wanted to run. I love to run. Infortunately for me I have a condition called metatarsil limitus which makes running a little hard and sometimes painful. But I keep going. Last night I went 3.25 miles in 30 minutes. A 27 minute jog at 6.7 miles per hour with a two minute walk at 4.5mph at the begining and a 1 minute cool down walk at 4.5mph at the end. Is this good? I have no idea. Of course this is all on my treadmill and not outside. Does this make a huge difference? I am signing up to run a 5k in december. I am looking into the virtual races too before it gets too cold. I love running! And I am going to run myself into being healthy, fit, and at the perfect weight!

To change the way you behave, you must first change the way you believe.

Though I've *tried* to run again and again over the years, I've really only recently discovered how satisfying it could be. I was a swimmer and dancer as a kid, and I've fallen for hiking as an adult. I turned to running after hitting several endurance walls in the mountains when my runner friends were still full of energy. I figure that if I can run a 5k, I'll be MUCH better prepared for next spring's hike season! Turns out, I LOVE running right now.

I'm *almost* to the point where I can start this program. I felt like I"m somewhere between the Walk/Jog and the straight run program, so I went for the challenge. I am looking forward to talking running with you all!

I have always had a love of running, especially in high school. Now almost 16 years and one 3-year-old later I'm finally ready to get back to it. I realized early on that I need some structured help to get back in shape to run my first 5k in quite a while. I'm planning to start of 2013 with finishing the Tucson 5k Resolution Run on January 1st. This program is helping me get my run on!. Thanks Sparkpeople community for all your support and guidance!

Hi! Im Michelle I joined the race because I have always considered running but never really was motivated enough to do it. Then everyone started talking about doing a 8k together at the gym...too embarrased to run with others so I am starting with this virtual 5k...and I am so glad I did..I really love running now and have signed up for that 8K and another 5K! emoticon

Hi everyone! I'm Claudia and I'm back to do this again. Last Spring I was in Week 3 and doing great, when I twisted my ankle and I was out for too long. Besides my work schedule (12ers) just didn't mesh too well with workouts. Well, I'm back and I'm gonna do this!

Hi, IMLENORE. I used to run in high school and college until I hurt my knee. Now, I'm taking it easy with a walk/jog, although I tend to do more jogging than walking. I used to like running in 5Ks, so I'm looking forward to this virtual 5K. emoticon

Hi I'm Daveda. I'm 52 and have never been a runner. I try to work out a few times a week but have fallen into bad habits and making excuses. I signed up to see if the challenge might get me motivated to compete and to get back on track with losing weight.

Mary-Ann :)

I will be grateful for this day!

Hi everyone,
I'm no couch potato by any means but never really been a runner! A few years back I tried C25K through Robert Ullrey's podcasts and loved it! I've completed the program and could probably still run 3 miles now, but since I'm doing a lot of other exercises, I plan on easing back into it gently. (Right now I'm following a Jillian Michaels rotation with several of her DVDs, which are all quite intense for me personally!)
I've realized that running on a TM is easier on my shins than running outdoors.. which gets quite boring here anyway as we're living on a fenced in military housing complex.. (Outside is not safe for many reasons; the biggest stray dogs attacking and no safe roads!)

Anyway, I look forward to reading here and getting to know some of you better maybe! I've never ran a 5K race but certainly hope to being able to participate once we're back in the US next spring! (The scenery to run there will be nicer too! ;) )

Have a great weekend!

Val emoticon

Hi my name is Elizabeth and I was a runner most of my life. I got out of the habit and I am slowly working it back in - between kids, husband, work, and the rest of life. My friend have been running one 5k per month this year but I haven't been giving it my all as far as training goes, but I want to change that and this team seems to be a great start.

My next 5k will be at the end of September, but I have also joined the virtual 5k too. Thanks for letting me be part of your team.

Hi team :)

My name is Rachael, I've been a walker/slow occasional jogger for a while. I thought I would go ahead and sign up for the virtual 5k. Do my training program and see what happens. I'm planning on surprising myself with how great of a job I do ;)

Hi, I'm Margaret and I'm not a new runner, well not really. Unless you count starting from scratch again, new. I used to run 3-5 miles a day and log in over 20 miles a week. I ran 5ks all the time, any that I could get into. Then I started smoking again and stopped. Since then I've yo-yoed and now at my heaviest again, I am starting with the running walking all over again. It's very frustrating. I have a new goal though and I am determined to make my 35th year the best year of my life. My younger sister was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer yesterday. I'm sad and numb and mad at myself for wasting the precious moments I have been given. So I started this morning as a very slow Day 1. I got up and went out to do my jog/walk determined that this is going to be my new life. Day 1, in the books!

I'm a 36 yo male from upstate NY. I never liked running but always wanted to run a 5k. This is my first time attempting a program. I also cross train with weights on non-running days. I haven't signed up for a race yet, but I'll look for one once I'm close to finishing the program or do a virtual run.

Keep at it.

Hi everyone!! I did C2K5 last year first time ever to run I am 37! In November 2011 I had worked my way up to 35-40 minute runs then I broke my foot. In May 2012 I was back to C25K but couldn't get past mental block of injury. So I started doing fast sprints/walk intervals and got bored so I found this on spark people. I will begin day 1 of week 2 and I am excited to have a new goal to work towards. I hope I can do the 35 minutes at week 4 emoticon

Hi everyone,

There are a few introduce yourself pages, so I decided to post in Week One & here.

I live in the Chicago suburbs. My goal is to do triathlons, but my weak link seems to be running. I know I need to start doing 5K's

I was a runner, in High School. I was on the cross country team, in the fall and did Track & Field in the spring. I have not done any serious running, in 25 years. I started a similar walk/run plan, last fall. I found the plan on a dog web site. It was how to get your dog in shape, but it was too rigorous for her, so we stopped. For the last 9 months I've been running on the treadmill, at the gym. But I knew I had to take my running outdoors.
Wow! Harder than I remembered and so much harder than the treadmill.

I look forward to getting to know everyone and hearing about your races.

About 10 years ago, I took a college level running class. Then I started having kids. Now, I'm back to running. I walked a 5K with my friend about 3 weeks ago. Last Saturday, walked about 1/2 and ran the other 1/2 of a 5K with my husband. I have a route around my neighborhood that is 3.11 miles that I can run pretty easily at a pretty slow pace. Would like to be able to 'officially' run an entire 5K at a better pace.

Never been a runner. Walking, I can do it all day long. Running...bah! I tried the Couch to 5k thing and failed at week 7 when it told me run for 25 minutes straight, So I stopped. Started up again last month on my own kind of plan which is very similar to this one. SO I figure I'll pick this one up and use it to move along. I do most of my running at the gym on a treadmill but 1x a week I do head outside and that will probably change to 2x a week once my boys start football practice next week. I had hoped to complete a 5k in August but scheduling won't allow it so I will continue on for a bit and maybe find one in the spring after football and basketball are over! :)

Hi! I've never been a runner. My only experience was one summer when I stopped smocking and went during two months jogging daily with my brother. I remember managing 45 minutes non-stop. But then I started smocking again and I didn't dare to try it anymore. But now, maybe 7 years later, I've stopped smocking cigarettes (I use e-cigs instead) and I feel I can breathe much better. So it's been already a few days that I'm thinking about going to jog again. And this programs seems perfect for starting slowly. Let's see where it takes me...
I wish you all lots of success. emoticon

I have never been much of a runner but I always wanted that sense of accomplishment from running a marathon or a 5K. Now in my volunteer group I learned of a 5K coming up for a good cause, hospice. So, I wrote my name down and figured I'd better get training.

Hi. I've done a little running on and off and hope to get back to running 3 miles and entering a 5k. I've been working back to health after an injury tearing my ACL and separating my shoulder. I have been out jog/walking already and strained my calf muscle! So it seems an uphill battle with another injury. I hope to still be able to follow the training program while healing from this strain/tear.

Hi Everyone,

I use to be a runner. I did 5ks, 1/2 marathons. Last year I experience pain in left knee. I went and got check out. Found I have mild arthritis. I went to see a chiro and he adjusted my knee where I feel no pain when walking. So tomorrow I am going to run on the treadmill to how my knee feels. Wish me luck. I love to run.

Hi, I'm Carol. Up until the past 5-7 years I've been active and fairly fit. But five years ago I took a more sedentary job and man did get fat and out of shape. I've been a runner since junior high and want to get back to running. I ran the Country Music Half Marathon in 2002. But no serious running since then. So excited to be part of this.

Hi. I joined on Monday, and did my first work out on Wednesday. I've been running casually for about a month, but reading all the running materials here, I have decided to take a step back and move do intervals with this training program. I'll be on vacation next week, but hoping to be able to stick with it, even if on the hotel treadmill.

Welcome to the team! It's seems funny that so many of us use to run at one point in our lives and gave it up. And now we're working on getting back into it. Imagine if we would've never given it up.

Hello my name is Twanda and many years ago I was an all around athlete. I am in my 40's now but I plan on putting this body back in shape as though I was in my late teens. There is not a 5K run listed in my area but I plan on finding one. Thanks for any help you can provide me.
