Hi Jennifer!
emoticon
Consistency comes from regular training. After I go through this Program, whether after injury or illness, I start to look at running drills and speed training. I also run at least three days a week with recovery days in between. My pace is usually two minutes slower than race pace. My conditioning and endurance improves.

When I'm feeling good about my distance I start to look at Speed Training. Here's an example:

I think one of the best things you got going for you is your running buddy. And it doesn't get better than running with you son! All the best and please don't hesitate to bring your questions to the forums. Have fun with your run!

HI, my name is Jennifer. I started running more than a year ago, but I'm not consistent. That's what I want to work on. I have participated in many 5k Runs/Fun Runs/Walks - I love them! I have 3 more set for the year, and possibly a 4th one as well. My average run is about 42 minutes. I would like to get it down to 35 minutes though. When I originally started I could barely run half a mile. My first 5k I finished in 58 minutes, and I was thrilled!

My running buddy is my 12 year old son - he loves running and participates in all the 5ks with me.

Welcome COLDWATERCAVE and Congrats, Shiraz on your new toy!

I just completed St Anthony's Triathlon. I'll do a race report very soon. Lots of great goals came out of it but I'm very proud of the fact that I competed in the 65-69 Age Group for the first time! Trust me when I say these guys are tough! More importantly, they confirm age is NOT an excuse to sit and become a spectator of life!

All the best on your run journey. Run smart, run safe, and have fun!

Hi SHIRAZSOLLY,

Congrats on getting a new treadmill! It will make your running much better in winter months and on those rainy days. If you've got a tablet, you can even set it up to watch a movie while running.; I've seen people doing that at the gym.

I think the investment is well worth it! Have fun running! emoticon

A bunch of garbage happened and I realized I need to make this REALLY really easy for me because I work, go to school full time AND am building a grandma apartment on my house to move my mom in... and then I got a wrench thrown in two of the three last week. So I ordered a Sole F85 Treadmill and it will be delivered to my house 4/1 (hopefully no fooling because I had to pull some favors and work some weird hours to arrange to be home all day waiting for it). Anyway, I did not start my 5k and time, and won't start next week, either. But I am really looking forward to my new toy. :)

*** Hi COLDWATERCAVE,

I read about your knee problem. I'm 39, but have terrible knees for my age. I love mountain climbing and running, which is a big problem for my knees. Here's why I did:

-- Keep your legs warm. Wearing tights under my running pants helps. Warm knees seems to equal less pain.

-- Wear knee supporters. I bought these at the drug store. They are two little, tight cloth things that slide over your leg and over the knee. They are washable and stretchy. They keep the knee area a little tight, acting as a brace. While running, I found these little supporters really do take the pain off my knee. I never go mountain climbing without them now.

-- Muscle training. Squats, knee raises and pushing a heavy weight away from your body via the legs, all help. A mountain climbing friend said we need to train the knee like a muscle. Eventually, it will power up to become stronger and be better able to support your body on runs.

I hope my experiences might help you. emoticon

Thank you for the welcoming words, all! I just started my Week 2 runs today -- it's harder, but I made it. Weather is finally great -- cool, but no more ice.

Thanks for your welcome. IT band issues are not fun to deal with so you have my sympathies. My knees are just old with some arthritis. The other knee problems I'd solved along the way, but this one feels best if I keep my weight down and don't run on hard surfaces. I'll probably do part of my workouts race walking instead of running. The outcome should be about the same.

Welcome! Whatever it takes to keep those knees healthy is cool. I don't know what you're dealing with so I can't make any suggestions. I'm dealing with IT Band issues so I do exercises designed specifically for muscle strength, core, and glutes. All the best and keep us posted of your progress!

Hello. I live in Iowa, just going back to running. I'm hoping that running on grass or gravel will be kind enough for my knees to continue. If not, I'll switch to race walking. It is wonderful to get outside and run. Mud washes off so the alleys and trails are good enough.

I never endorse speed in this program. I've done it several times to come back from injury or illness. It's about conditioning and endurance, getting our bodies back to a comfy position at a 5K distance. I always say "Run your own run!" You probably know running can be better than anything in dealing with stress too. So, welcome back, and get ready to free yourself. Don' t hesitate to holla for anythings and use these forums frequently. We'll be here for support!

Back again after a year. Ran a few 5ks then but was dogged by asthma and ankle issues. Then I abruptly quit due to work and school pressures. This time I think I will start slower, pay attention to my body more and keep it up. I want to run. Those times it felt good, it felt really right, like hiking to the top of a tall mountain used to when I as younger. No other sport has been so freeing.

So here I am... Back on another beginner 5k.

I started running at 60! You already have the secret which I share with everyone! Enjoy your run! I still use this program when I've been ill or had injury. So, that said, I know it will get you back and ready for the 5K in a very safe way! Don't hesitate to post your experiences, your insight, and questions along the way! Have fun!

Hi! My name is Martha and I'm 60 years old in Indiana. I just signed up for 5K race April 18. Now I have to get ready for it. I used to run and I remember how fun it was. It's just been a long time, so I need help to get back into it.

This program WILL get you across a 5K finish line! It's the basis for training for a Half Marathon should you desire. It is also a great plan to get you back into running training if you have been away from running for a while!

I found that the best motivation for me is to focus on my Wife and my Granddaughter! If I don't take care of myself, I am not sure I will be there for them! It's the reason I lost 100 pounds! Today, it's the reason I do Triathlons and Duathlons! Look at your children for the motivation and the reason not to quit! My Granddaughter wants to run with us now! THAT is the motivation I have to keep running and doing Multisports!

You are ONLY 31 years old. You are young and have the rest of your life to live healthy. I started running at 60! I will be 65 in May this year. I am the healthiest I've ever been!

Things will only be different if ONLY you want them to change bad enough! Commitment, patience, and persistence will get you there. Stay positive and stay focused for your children! Keep posting here through your training! Start right now! All the best and know you can seek support here!

Hi! My name is Martina,
I start follow this group because my problem is stay motivated. I eat well and have no weight problem but I know that if I don't start practice some fitness I'll have problem in future. Every time I start some activity I'll stop after 1 or 2 weeks. I stop for some months and then I restart.
My dream is to run a marathon in my life and I imagine myself visiting the most important cities of my country (Italy) running different half-marathon (Venice, Mediolanum, Rome, Florence..) with my family (I've 2 little children)
I'm only 31 years old, so I hope I can do that! But in the last 4 years I've started my running program 8/10 times and I've never reached nothing! I hope this time things will be different!

I need something/someone keep me really motivated!
bye!
Martina

Hello all!!

My name is Cherie and I am from Milwaukee Wisconsin. I have had a treadmill for 2 or 3 years and never really knew what to do with it (I know that sounds silly but it is true) so I finally turned to spark and found the 5k your way and it clicked!
I finished my first week this morning and I am feeling awesome!! My other workout/exercise include weight training everyother day and daily walks with my dogs!!
I am glad that I keep finding my way to Spark it is always so helpful!

I can do this, and so can you!!

I totally agree with you, Beckyanne! Conditioning your body is the first thing anyone should do when they first start out. When one gets comfy with the distance THEN start to look at basic speed drills and training! Running injury free is Nirvana! So we focus on safety, we have fun, embrace the run, and it becomes habit!

I find that once I started running 5k's, that kept me motivated and challenged to keep running. Just remember to take it slow to avoid injuries.

Hi all! I've just joined this team tonight, along with the challenge, to begin the program tomorrow. I've been a beginner runner for 5 years now...When I commit to training, I do pretty well. The problem is that I don't commit for long enough to get to my goals. I've completed multiple 5Ks in which I mostly walked. I'm ready to run a full 5k with the eventual goal of running 3-5 miles per day. I enjoy running when I do it...it's just that when I stop, I have trouble jumping back in.

I look forward to the motivation of this team!

It;s good that we respect distance! Mark, you work the plan, add miles to your training as you go, and you can build up to any distance you desire...safely. I was where you were at one time as well! Trust me when I say to "hydrate," "fuel clean," and embrace recovery days. Sleep is essential in recovery and helps repair muscles! Embrace the program and your run. Have fun with it and be proud that you're a runner now! You will inspire by your action and set the example. Now rock this thing!

Hello all! I just finished the 5K Walk/Jog training program (did my first 5K on Thanksgiving!) and now I'm ready to keep working at it so I joined this one. I'm 41, married with 4 kids (range 10yrs - 4mo) and live near Philadelphia. My FIL lives near me and is also a runner so he and I are helping encourage each other (he ran the 5K with me). My oldest daughter also seems to like to run (she did the kids 1mi fun run at our race) so maybe I can get her to join me in training, although I don't know if I can get her out of bed so early LOL!

I started running your years ago at 60. I've returned back to this program for recovery after injury, or I hadn't run in a while (rarely). No matter what I always recommend when you train, run 2-3 minutes slower that race pace but a bit farther than you normally train. That will condition and increase distance & endurance. after over 70 races, I have never left this Team. Great to have you here and run well on Oct 25.

I discovered that I could run about six years ago and have been an off-again, on-again runner. I am preparing for my first 5K in about four years and will run it on my birthday, October 25. This morning was an achievement because I wanted to run the full distance at least one time before my race. I'll be in the jogging corral when we start because it's about stamina for me. Have a super Saturday, and thanks for letting me say hello.

Welcome back, Jenn! Start off on your form, conditioning, & endurance. Get your legs used to it again. (I hope you're still running on a regular routine!) Then after a couple of weeks, check out a few basic interval or speed drills. Yes, you will rock your run!

Hi, it's Jenn and I'm here again. Going to run my second 5K on October 26th. Excited to break my time of 34 minutes from last year. I'll start the real good training this week, with 4 weeks to go I know I'll be ready!
20 fewer pounds on my body will make training a lot more enjoyable too.

I'm 5'8" and determined to make a change now. Ten minutes of fitness daily. Too many times I've fallen off the wagon, time to make long lasting positive habits stick. Can I do it?!

Oh, thank you so much for the welcome and for the link to runners' exercises. I was delighted to see that I've been doing a lot of them already with a Pilates instructor. I've saved the link and will try to run through the video for beginners TODAY!

Welcome RACHEL!

I was active in HS, but I could never have run the distance I do now. Even after HS when I did take up running, I could only run a few miles at a time. I've improved with age! emoticon

Hi! I just joined the team! I ran track in high school, but through my first year of college and dealing with the stress of classes, I didn't work out much. I've started working out some again this summer, but i really want to get back to the level of fitness that I was at in high school!!

I started running at 60 at a very similar pace. I've also done this program several times just to "tune up & stay sharp!" I can testify that we can do this! Fuel clean, hydrate, stay focused on the program, and start out a strength program.
Check this article out and choose a couple to start with then build up.

Even starting with 1 set of 10 then increase 1 or 2 more sets, working up as you go. Don't rush into it but have fun with it.
Ask any questions you might have in the forums. That's why we're here.
insure your SparkPage is open to all so we can comment and support better.
Try to comment on your progress in the program week forums.
Once again, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy what you are doing!
We all begin at the same Starting Line! All the best!

Hi, just joined this team, I'm Martha from southern MD. I just finished the walk/jog training and want to kick it up a notch. I'll be 65 in Oct and want to be able to jog without stopping by then. I've completed 2 formal 5k's and 2 virtual ones. The first one I did for fun before joining the 5k team, my time was 60 mins, I walked it with a new friend I met at the race The 2nd one I walked jogged and did it in 55 mins and the course had 2 killer diller hills, lol. I was proud of myself for just finishing.

Hello!
I've never been a runner, but I was looking for a way to bump up my fitness level and decided to start doing intervals on the treadmill. And just then I saw an announcement for a 5K at my hospital that is scheduled for my 60th birthday. It's fate, right?
So, here I am, hoping to learn what I need to get through my first race. My goal is to jog the course. I will declare victory if I finish and award myself the laurel crown if I can do it without dropping down to a walk...
It's nice to have the expertise and companionship here.
All the best!

I recommend you back off on the hill training IF you haven't research how to run them. I injured my Meniscus last year doing a steep bridge and the damage came a few days later. Keep in mind this was after I had done of over 35 races from 11/2010 - 1/20/13. If you work the intervals recommended, you will get stonger and conditioned safely. To date, after oveer 60 races, I've gone back and done this program just to discipline myself.
I know if you stay with the plan, you will achieve your goal. Please don't hesitate to post any questions you might have. Stay strong , focused, fuel clean, and have fun with it!

Hi All, I don't have a particular race that I am training for. Running is one of my goals, I have never been able to run an entire mile without slowing down to a walk, so I am working on that. This is a great plan and seems to be exactly what I need. I have been training on the same 2 miles the first week. It is almost entirely up hill for the first half. I am hoping that this will make next week seem like a breeze and I will float thru it and not even want to stop for the walking intervals.

Welcome Sonya & Tricia!

Focus on finishing your races. You can work on your speed, should you want, down the road. Both scheduled 5Ks can be done safely! That's what you want to do. Stay close to the program for conditioning. Strength training should be focused on your glutes, IT Band, Quads, calves, and hamstrings. You can find exercises for runners here.

Tricia, I don't know how many races you have done but keep in mind that progressing in distance and speed properly is important. Should you advance too soon, you are opening yourself up to injury.

Sonia, you can complete your race no matter what. Work the plan until a few days before the race. Do your race BUT do not worry if you feel the need to interval, i.e. walk, run. Enjoy the race. You will have another day to run the entire distance. It's better to be injury free. AND you want to have fun with it. Use it as a training run.

Both of you feel free to post questions in the forums and report your progression in the program. Support is here!

All the best and enjoy!

Hi I'm Tricia, new to Spark and back to getting healthy. I have a desire to be a runner - one that actually enjoys the process. I am slow as turtles in peanut butter. I have completed a lot of runs for someone who is so terrible slow, and I'll continue pursuing them until I "get it right".

Next run is in August 5K, my last run was Shamrock 15K - not pretty at all.

Good luck to everyone, be careful out there emoticon

Hi! My name is Sonya. I was convinced to sign up for my first 5K in July. I have never run a race, so I am REALLY nervous about it. This program looked like the best for getting me ready, so I am going to give it a try!

When you get out on the road to train, find an easy pace to work at. You should find it easier to run than on the "dreadmill!" Focus on endurance and not on speed right now. You have that choice later down the road! Great to have you join us. Don't hesitate to share your experiences in the forums and ask for help whenever you feel the need!

Training for my first 5K in July. Excited, but concerned about transitioning from the treadmill to the road.

Getting healthy is like getting through boot camp. It's a lot of hard work, and some days you want to quit. But when graduation day arrives, memories of pain and trouble pale in the light of the pride and accomplishment you feel. You made it! You didn't quit.

Hello All -- I have run 5Ks, but only 1 in 2013 and then work and life got in the way and I fell off the wagon. I'm back, motivated to get re-started, and I'm signing up for a 5K on June 21 . . . and I found THIS group for support and motivation! Weather has been horrible but I don't care if it's pouring rain like a monsoon tonight, I'm headed out after work to get started. Thanks for being here!

I've done this same program 3 times, just to clean the slate so to speak, and remind myself on how I got here today! It also reminds me how effective interval running can be. Great job!
