PatsyB7, I'm so glad you got clearance! Just take it easy and remember you don't need to progress through the plan as quickly as it says. Repeat weeks when you feel its necessary. As you know, safe is better than sorry! Welcome to the team!

I got the okay from my physical therapist to start "running" again. At my pace it's more like a jog but that's fine with me. I have a torn meniscus in my right knee that responded well to pt. I continue to do the exercises to keep the leg muscles strong and supportive.

I do not like to run on a treadmill but I do enjoy an elliptical machine and indoor cycling. I belong to a health club with a beautiful pool where I do water aerobic classes and water walking/jogging.

Although I've run many 5 and 10ks, a half and full marathon in my younger years, I like the idea of a rookie running program to help me safely build up my mileage again.

I look forward to spring--it was a bit icy in spots on my morning jog today.

Hi MELLSIE95! Welcome to running! Please don't be nervous. The best advice I can give is to follow the program (or whatever program you have chosen to use) and don't hesitate to repeat days or weeks when you feel you need it. One of the most important things I was told that helped me was to only run as fast as you can walk in the beginning. It seemed so basic, but not something I would have considered. Please ask any questions you may have under the correct Discussion Forum below. You may also find someone else has had the same issue or question as you in the past. Wishing you many happy miles ahead! Happy Sparking!

Hi everybody!

I'm a starter runner and a bit nervous to start. I want to start running because I'm planning to do a 5K color run next year june, as well as a mud race next year september (6K). Both to get money for good causes, and just to prove to myself that I'm capable of such a thing :)

Hi all! I have been a member of this team for quite a while. I am active on Sparkpeople and I am an on again, off again runner. I have completed several 5Ks and 1 10K. I am hoping to sign up of the Disney Enchanted weekend half marathon tomorrow. It's in February 2017. Registration goes quickly! If I can help answer questions or just motivate or encourage anyone, let me know. I know the pitfalls of being a very overweight person learning to run. Looking forward to getting to know some of you better!

I'm new to running and have never raced before. I started a C25k last fall and was doing well, but then the day before thanksgiving I injured my calf. I've healed but have been delaying starting back up with running. Guess I'm a bit scared to get hurt again. I am signed up with friends to do a 5k in May 2016, so this is it!

I'm Lorinda. I've tried to go through this program twice before. The last time (2011) I broke my elbow at the end of week 6 (after I had just finished my 3rd day of week 6 run decided to walk my dog and slipped on a broken patch of concrete in the sidewalk). My goal is run my 1st 5K since 8th grade (38 yrs later) with my sister.

Hi I'm Steph. I've done some races before (including a half-marathon), but I don't have a consistent run/walk interval. I kind of jog until I feel tired, then walk some until I feel up to jogging again. I call it wogging. Figured its finally time to start and finish (key word there-finish) a program so I can actually jog/run for longer distances, or at least build consistency in my walk-jog intervals.

Hello my name is Judy. I returned to SP 22 days ago. Had lost 90 lbs, and then went off track and battled getting back for about a year. Gained back most of my weight. My main exercise during the time I was on track was walking 6-7 miles a day, three times a week and swimming laps three times a week for 20-30 minutes. I wanted to get myself in good enough shape to do a 5k and eventually a half marathon but went off track before getting there. Soooo, I am starting back again. Lost 17 lbs in the last three weeks, most of it the first week and now at a steady pace. This looks like a good fit for me. I am going to have my granddaughter walk/run with me. She used to walk up to 3.5 miles with me before.. She is 14, has severe autism, and weighs 220 lbs and I need to get her weight down as she is getting too hard for me to care for at this weight and it is better for her health. I don't know if I'll be able to get her to run, but I'll just walk with her, and then if she won't run with me, then I'll run back and forth in the same area until it's time to walk again. wrestling with whether to start later today, or wait until tomorrow morning.

What doesn't kill you will make you stronger

I may fall down, then I get back up, brush myself off, and get back into the race.

Back again... I did this program nearly 4 years ago and kept up with it for about 7 months before life and inertia wormed their insidious way into my life. As I became more inconsistent in my running (but continued to run the same distance), I developed aches and pains, including sciatica. Eventually, I became an inveterate couch potato. Yikes.

So I am here to give it another go. It feels great to feel fit, and I want that feeling again.

Just finished my week 1 day 1. 30 minutes, 1.8 miles. Legs sore but I feel good. I ran last summer but quit during a bad Lyme flare. I had to walk last year's Color Run. I am determined to run this year. Also my bf is an avid runner and I would eventually like to join him.

Hello everyone! My name is Sherri. I have never tried running before. I am not sure that it is such a good idea because I am quite overweight. Oh well, I am going to give it my very best. I plan on starting tomorrow, on a Monday. That will put my training days on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I want to try at least one new thing a year. This year, I want to be a runner, or at least try. This seems to be a good program to try. Even if I can't actually do it, at least I can shoot for the stars!

Hi I am Criss. I recently got a pacemaker and need to get healthier. I am praying God sent me to this program to help me succeed. I like that I can walk mostly, but still jog too. I just have to pace myself and sometimes break it up into smaller increments depending on how I feel.

I hope my kids learn as much from me as I learn from them. ( both my own children and the children I work with.)

Hi. I just learned about this program from another Sparker, (thanks Gaye)... and today I begin. I'm psyched, but plan to go more slowly than the official schedule. I'm calling this week "PRE-week one" since it looks like I have to get some things figured out. This morning I did only 2 stints of jogging. I'm using a stopwatch app on my phone that has the controls to close to the edge so I accidentally hit the "stop" two different times so that was goofed up, plus I will do this program walking my dog and I have to figure out how to do that, since she wants to stop and sniff. Most of my trail she can be off-leash, but if I happen upon other walkers, I have to quick put her on a leash and if that happens during the run part... oh dear... anyway, gotta get a better plan in place for that..

anyway... I'm glad to have found a program that looks like it ramps up slowly enough for where I'm at. (I like the FOUR minute walk in week 1... another program had only 1.5 minutes, and that seems too aggressive for me to start.

I'm looking forward to meeting other runners, other Sparkers, and hopefully work up to 5K.

I just completed the 5K Your Way Walk/Jog Program and I was pretty happy with my time on the last run--47.25.

This is the year I make my fitness comeback!

Hi. My name is Brian. I signed up for a 5K the end of May as part of a workplace wellness program. I'm not ready. When I counted the weeks to prepare and found I have nine weeks. I decided to just start over and join the rookie runners. My winter treadmill running program was a disaster.

I start week 1, day 1 this afternoon. Look forward to checking in.

Hi! My name is Ali and I've been with Sparkpeople for a little over a year. So far I've lost 126 lbs. and have already done three virtual 5K's. I have my first live 5K this coming Saturday. I figure I really need to start doing some serious training. I have another live 5K at the end of May and a virtual 4 miler at the end of June. After that I want to start working my way up to first a 10K and then a half marathon by this time next year.

I'm not training for a competition. I'm not trying to set a new record. I'm not trying to impress you. I'm saving my life!

Hello! I just joined this team tonight. My husband and I actually did day one of the 5 day program today .. 4 minute walks 1 minute jog X 5 which timed out to 1.5 miles at our pace which is just this side of turtle pace. As we actually have nine weeks until our first 5K I thought the eight week plan was probably better for us. We have been going to the YMCA since last May, and I struggle with the whole jogging thing. I find if I go much faster than that turtle pace I spoke of, I get very winded! This plan, at least for now, seems to work well for me.

Hi everyone! Today is my first day of this program. I have started my lifestyle change in the beginning of January and I have a goal to complete a 5k within the next couple of months. So for Day 1 so far so good! emoticon

I look forward to jumpstarting my 2015 weight loss and exercise routine with this program and running my first 5K this year (2nd ever) by May. Day 1 went well yesterday.

Hello! I'm trying something new this month, committing to exercise. I am on the brink of 40 and I have to start treating my body better before it starts backfiring on me😊 I have never been a serious exerciser, maybe doing 1-2 workouts a week at my peak. I live in a very rural area and have decided my "country road" will be my own private gym. I am hoping to run a 5k in about 10 weeks. I have done 2 races in the past, mostly walked with a few sprints. I would really like to run this one. My goals are to get healthy- ward off any future health problems, and lose weight.

The first time I did this program was more than a year ago, a couple of months after I quit smoking. I ran regularly for about a year, and even managed a half marathon, but hurt myself in early January...and the physical therapist just gave me the go-ahead to start running again! I love this program, and I know it works! Really excited to do this with all of you!!

Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.

Hi team, I was never a runner either; actually I walk slow, it's hard for me to walk fast, so that will be my goal to walk faster.

Hi all. I've never been a "runner." In fact, I have awful memories of middle school gym class where I could never make my mile run/walk time. I would run as hard and fast as I could until I had an asthma attack and would get sent to the nurse.

Not this time! I am finally overcoming my hatred of running. I'm following this program with the goal of running a 5K for charity in May (the same day that I graduate from college).

Hello everyone.
I'm 31 years old and just getting back into the running game after a 3 year hiatus due to injuries. Getting back down to my running weight-- have 21 more pounds to lose. Ran my first 5K already this year. Due for another race on 28 February. Not quiet ready but gonna do it anyway. I'm still struggling with knee problems but have a running brace and the knee gets better as the weight goes down.

No more trail or adventure running for me (That's how I got hurt). Getting to old for that stuff, but will eventually work up to a half or full marathon again. Looking forward to seeing you out at the races

Hi! I have always loved the idea of running, but the best I've been able to do was jog/walk a 5K. So I thought I needed some training here. Plus I had a couple illnesses/injuries in the past couple of years so I want to ease in.

Every year I walk the CIBC Run For The Cure in October, and this year I plan to run it with a good time. And I'd also like to do some fun runs before then.
